The weight of materials stored in the Booth Library at the Chemung
Valley History Museum has caused the floor to sag and walls to crack.
Much of the materials will have to be relocated to other parts of the museum.
The overloaded second floor -- where Booth Library is located -- is
sloping down and must be repaired before the area can be used again by
the public, said Amy H. Wilson, the museum's director and curator.Until
the museum has the money to restore the floor, members of public who wish
to have research done will have to pay researchers to dig through the archives
for them, Wilson said. The books and papers now in the Booth Library area
must be relocated throughout the second and third floors of the museum,
she said. Everything must be documented and archived so it can be located
during the interim, and climate controls must be installed.About 600 researchers
a year visit the library, archivist Heather Wade said. She said most users
have been understanding about the situation and want the history protected
and preserved, even if that means they can't use it right now."The next
step (is) to reinforce the floor and structural renovations to the building,
but of course that comes with a cost, which we can't manage right now,"
Wilson said. |

The 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Newtown
- This is a major event for our area, but none of the committeee members
have sent me information about it that I can pass on to you. Sorry. |
|
Our Ashland Historical Society joins with Newtown
Battle Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and the Chemung Valley
Living History Center in celebrating the 225th ANNIVERSARY of the BATTLE
of NEWTOWN on August 27, 28 and 29th.
This Revolutionary War battle took place at Lowman, here in the Town
of Ashland on August 29, 1779, matching the Continental forces of Major
General John Sullivan against the British and Indians under Colonal John
Butler and Chief Joseph Brant.
Probably the most important battle of the Sullivan Expedition, it
was an effort to counteract attacks of the British and Indians on
the colonists at Wyoming, Pa. and Cherry Valley, N.Y.
Weekend events include attacks on the British camp, on the Indian
camp and the American camp, historical lectures, Re-dedication of Sullivan's
Monument, and a RE-ENACTMENT of this HISTORIC BATTLE on the ORIGINAL SITE
WHERE IT TOOK PLACE 225 YEARS AGO!
A great weekend for you and your family, Come, enjoy!
Thanks - Sylvia Smith! |
