Happy 100th Birthday to Mildred -
Mildred Packard Wright whose picture appears on your site as
a teacher in the Thomas School, will be 100 years old on September
8. (The picture you have on your site was taken when she was about 24 years
old.) Mildred who is my father's eldest first cousin has arranged
to have her 100th birthday celebration at the Troy, PA Methodist
Church on Labor Day at noon to about 5 pm. She has planned the party,
the program, hired a caterer, and enlisted friends, nieces, nephews, cousins,
and neighbors to help with the details. Announcements and open invitations
will be in the local newspapers this week. |

I wanted to pass along information regarding the
upcoming Local History Bus Tour that is being sponsored by the Chemung
County Historical Society. On Friday, September 24th from 10:00 to
12:00, we will be touring a number of Revolutionary War cemeteries in
Chemung County. Our tour guide, Chemung County Historian J. Arthur
Kieffer, will provide information about the cemeteries as well biographic
profiles of some of the men that fought for the Continental Army during
the War for Independence. Cost for the tour and lunch is $12.00 for
CCHS members, $14.00 for non-members. If you have any questions or
are interested in riding along, call us at 607-734-4167 and make a reservation
for you and a friend. I look forward to seeing you there!

The Octennial Site Cleanup has begun. Yes, I made the word up,
but sometimes one has to do that. It means that I am giving the site a
major cleanup for the first time in eight years, and I may not do it again
for another eight. It should be transparent to you, but if I move a file
that you find in the search engine you will get a Page Not Found message.
Once I reindex the website it will be back to normal, or you can locate
the page, if you need it right away, via the site's natural place/subject
structure. That is not going to change. You may also see the counters on
pages that have been on the site for years, set back to zero. That means
only that I have moved that page to a different folder on the hard drive.
It does not affect the links that you use to navigate the site. If you
are in the habit of entering the site with marked pages other than the
site's main page, you may be inconvenienced. I can only give the advice
I always have, start with the main page. The site has become massive and
inconsistencies left over from its early days still lurk within. It is
a matter of efficiency for me that I'll be moving older files around to
a location more convenient to me for maintenance. This is not a fun job,
but it will help to get it over with.
On the first day of the cleanup I have to report that it has not been
entirely transparent online. I am also trying to change to a new software
and its behavior is unpredictable. I have recovered partially from the
first disaster of the process. |

LeRoy Heritage Museum Annual Dinner Meeting
Location: LeRoy Independent Baptist Church Annex
Time: Dinner - 6 p.m.; Meeting/Program - 7 p.m.
Information: Email leroymuseum@frontiernet.net
Reservations must be received by Friday, October 1, 2004. All
members
who plan on attending this event should return their reservation form
with $10 per person by this date. Anyone who becomes a member prior
to
October 1 is also welcome to make reservations for the dinner meeting.
The evening will include an update on the museum renovation project,
which began in August, and the work that has been done in the previous
year to preserve the history of LeRoy Township, in Bradford County.
A program will be given by museum president, Matt Carl, entitled “The
Legacy of the Lewis Brothers”, highlighting the history of the Lewis
family of LeRoy. The Lewis brothers, George, Harrison, and E. Lloyd,
along with their brother-in-law, H.L. Stone, operated the Lewis Hotel,
Lewis Lumber Company, and Lewis Brothers General Merchandise Store
in
LeRoy. According to Staley Clarke’s “The Romance of Old Barclay”, the
Lewis Brothers provided the lumber to build the Laquin sawmill. |
