Say Hello to Joyce

This month's illustrative photo tells you where I am and what I am doing. I am either in the garden, mowing the 4.6 acre lawn, or working on getting the new Sullivan Township Museum in order.
Please be patient in answers to email or new pages.
Happy Summer, and I look forward to meeting those of you who visit our area this summer.

17 JUNE 2004 BRADFORD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT  A WEDDING GOWN SHOW

The Bradford County Historical Society will officially open an exhibit of wedding gowns and wedding memorabilia on June 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The museum in the old jail on Pine street, Towanda, has an impressive collection of gowns and wedding attire that dates back to the early 1800s.  The wedding dress Jane Edlin wore at her marriage to Chenick VanCuren Bush dates back to 1829.

Among the unusual historic attire are the wedding pants of Daniel F. Heverly, from his wedding in 1850.  A gown worn by Lucinda Welles in 1865, when she married Joel Culkin, will also be on display.

Several other notable gowns from the 19th century on display are the 1874 dress of Emma Feiss who married Henry G. Farley, as well as Clara Hollenstein's lovely 1890 dress.  Two dresses donated by Bethel Nichols--her grandmother's 1898 dress, and her mother's 1926 dress--are on exhibit together.

Wedding dresses are not the only things on display. In addition to the gowns, some exhibits show veils, hose, and even the shoes worn by the brides.  Many of the exhibits have pictures to accompany the attire, in addition to written accounts of the weddings.

There are several wedding gowns from the 20th century, too, including Frances Chaffee's 1914 gown and shoes, and the wedding hose and veil from Belle Florence Barnard from 1904.  There are more modern dresses as well, as well as wedding certificates, and memorabilia from Bradford County weddings.

Several of the members of the Bradford County Museum's Board of Directors have agreed to display their own wedding pictures.  The public may be surprised at how good looking these people used to be!

In addition to the wedding attire, a wedding punch will be served from the famous Bennett Estate punch bowl, and light refreshment will be served.  The public is invited to attend the evening bridal show.  This is the first of what is hoped to be several evening events at the museum, and officially opens the summer season at the museum.  The public is invited to bring their wedding pictures and memories to share.  There is no admission charge for the program, but voluntary donations will be welcome.

This is the tentative schedule for the  Genealogy group that meets at the Bradford County Library in Burlington.  The time for these meetings will be 6:30 PM
