Women in Chemung County History - Lecture Series,
October 2003 -
Thursday, October 2nd, 2003 – “Letters from College:
1855-1875” - Dr. Mila Meier – Elmira College was the first college in the
world to grant degrees to women equal to those granted to men. The
young women who came to “The Mother of Women's Colleges" were intelligent,
adventurous, fun loving, and very unusual for their time. This presentation
discusses life in the first two decades of the College's existence, using
a treasure trove of old letters from those students to their families,
as well as slides of College scenes and scenes of local historical interest.
Listen as Dr. Mila Meier invites you into the lives of these extraordinary
young women (All lectures will be held at the Chemung Valley History Museum
at 415 East Water St., Elmira, and are free and open to the public.
Each lecture begins at 7pm and will last approximately one hour.) |
