It's Female Identification Month at Tri-Counties. Until very recent decades, custom in this country and many others required women to give up their own name when they married. Though no longer a legal or social requirement, the custom continues under strong social encouragement. Because of this many women are buried under a married alias with no reference to their own surname. Once their name is lost, their family connections are severed. With multiple marriages, the issue becomes even more complex, and records for a second or subsequent marriage most often listed her by a previous married alias rather than her real name. We are going to concentrate this month on restoring the lost names of our female ancestors buried in our three counties. See the attached page below for the format in which to submit your entries. |
