Descendants of Zenas Field & Polly Follett

Generation No. 1

1. Zenas7 Field (Moses Dickinson6, Moses5, Ebenezer4, Samuel3, Zechariah2, John1)1 was born March 1, 1776 in Massachusetts2,3,4, and died November 2, 1850 in Delmar, Tioga, Pennsylvania5,6,7. He married Polly Follett Abt. 1800 in Vermont7. She died Aft. 1826 in Delmar, Tioga, Pennsylvania.

Notes for Zenas Field:

In the 1810 census of Vermont, he is listed as Zenes Field, Brownington Township, Orleans County.

From "The History of Tioga County," pub. 1883: According to the returns made by David Heise, assessor, to John Cochran, Ephraim B. Gerould and Job Geer, county commissioners, certified by Isreal Merrick jr., clerk, the taxable inhabitants in 1832 were: ...Zenas Field, ...Isaac D. Field,...Moses Field

Zanas Field, a native of Massachusetts, born March 1, 1776, came from Vermont to Tioga county, Pennsylvania, in 1817, and purchased 154 acres of land in Delmar township. Building his cabin in the midst of the primitive forest he went bravely to work to make a home for himself and family. He was a stonemason and worked at his trade in connection with his farm duties. He was married in Vermont to Polly Follett, who bore him a family of seven children, viz: Eliphas, Isaac F., Roxelana, Moses D., Nelson and Mary, all of whom are dead, and Lucinda, deceased wife of Charles Billings, of Nebraska. Mr Field and wife continued to live on the homestead in Delmar until their death. [Note: this would mean that Rhoda is not their child?]

1850 Census, Delmar, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Page 215A, Aug. 15, 1850, he is living with Moses and Amy Field and his occupation is Mason.

In the Wellsboro Advertiser, Nov. 14, 1850, Zenas' obit says he was born in Surry, Cheshire, New Hampshire. Other sources say Massachusetts. F. G. Pierce's book "Field Genealogy" has Zenas' birth data as 1795 in Surry, NH. Delmas, Tioga, PA: 1850 census has Zenas' age as 74. Tioga Eagle newspaper and Wellsboro Advertiser both have Zenas dying on Nov. 2, 1850 at the age of 74. This would put his birth year at 1776. This birth year, however, would require that he be a twin to Lewis Field (if Lewis' birth date is correct). Most probably, he would have been born early in 1775 and was 75 years old at the time of his death. (From: Jack Davis] In the 1850 census of Delmar, Tioga County, a Zenas Field, age 74, mason, is listed living with Moses Field and family. Zenas' birth place is listed as New Hampshire

Marriages Recorded at Charlestown, NH 1751 to 1849 From The Old Fort # 4 Published 1876 Part 1 (1751 - 1806) Transcribed By Janice Farnsworth--1799 Feb. 28 Zenas Field, Surry and Mercy Nicholshttp http//freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rbrown/marrage/charlestown-nh-1.htm

Was Zenas married before Polly?

Is it possible Zenas, born 1776, is related to Zenas Field of MA, for whom the following is listed:

Notes for Charles Field:

A Civil War pension in PA was granted to someone named Charles M. Field whose mother was Amy Field.

In the 1870 census, Tioga County, living with Moses and Amy were sons Charles, age 23, and George, age 21. Both Moses and Charles listed $500 in assets.

Charles may have possibly been living "out west" in Minneapolis in 1880, a single man working as a laborer while boarding.

He married Orcelia (Celia) Zimmer187,188,189,190 Bet. 1871 - 1878 in Pennsylvania; born Abt. 1856 in Pennsylvania191,192,193; died April 1, 1886 in Blaine, Pottawatamie County, Kansas?194.

On http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us, there is this service card: (Given the age of 17, this would possibly be George as the F-81 and residence as Wellsboro would match other records)

According to Ted Dombroski, Co. K, 81st PVI, historian of the 81st Pennsylvania, tedd81stpa@nni.com, George enlisted in the Union Army of Pennsylvania on September 2, 1864, apparently lying about his age.

On George's death certificate, his spouse is listed as unknown. He may have remarried after Jack's mother died and Jack, the certificate informant, may not have known further details. George lived alone in Granite Falls, Minnesota, for many years before his death. He worked as a handyman and lived in a tiny house near Eldyn Jeseritz's mother's house in Granite Falls, Minnesota, where he died. He has a very small footstone at City Cemetery with a metal Veteran's star marker for his service in the Spanish-American War.

In censuses of Tioga County, there is a George W. Field, who was born in December of 1840. This George has been documented to be a man who moved to the west coast, where he lived and his grandson has provided enough information to attest that they are two different individuals.

There is also a George Field in Tioga censuses who was born in 1848, the son of Moses and Amy Walker Field. George's year of birth is a mystery. Possibilities include 1840 (death certificate), 1844/45 (1880 census with Celia), and 1848 (1850 census). Since even census takers could differentiate between a two-year-old and one who was ten, the 1848 date is assumed to be correct.

In the 1870 census, Tioga County, living with Moses and Amy were sons Charles, age 23, and George, age 21. Both Moses and Charles listed $500 in assets.

In the 1880 census, Charleston, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, George's date of birth based on the census would be around 1844.

Military Honors for Civil War Veteran

George Field Died at Montevideo Wednesday Night After Taking Part in Chippewa Fair Program

George "Dad" Field, aged Civil War veteran of this city, died at Montevideo Wednesday evening at eight o'- clock from heart failure. Mr. Field's death came suddenly while he was in the fire hall.

"Dad" Field, despite his eighty-seven years, had gone to Montevideo the day before to exhibit his horses, a pair of standard bred Hamiltonians, and on Wednesday he had been awarded the first prize.

After he had returned to Granite he discovered that he had left his coat in Montevideo so he drove up early that evening with Halvor Halvorson. It was while they were eating a lunch that Mr. Field became ill. Halvor took him across the street to the fire hall and a doctor was summoned, but "Dad" died before the doctor arrived.

In the death of "Dad" Field Granite loses a most unusual character. Although nearly eighty-eight years of age, "Dad" was as spry as a young man and liked to match his strength in a friendly tustle with young huskies of twenty-five. He would not give in to old age and up to the day of his death he cared for his own home, cared for his prize winning horses and his chickens and took an active interest in the affairs of the town.

Whenever the subject of horses was brough up "Dad" was turned to as an authority. He was a good judge of horses and knew their care, two facts vouched for by the number of prizes he has won on the horses he has exhibited.

George Field was born February 10, 1840 [sic--1848] at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. At the time of the Civil War Mr. Field enlisted in the 81st Pennsylvania lnfantry and his service lacked but 17 days of four years. He took part in a number of the famous battles, including that of Gettysburg and also that of Chancelorsvile.

Following his discharge from the army Mr. Field farmed in Pennsylvania for three years and then the family moved to Blaine, Kansas. It was here that Mrs. Field [Celia Zimmer] died. The family then returned to Pennsylvania and Mr. Field lived there until 17 years ago when he returned to the West, living for awhile at Dawson [North Dakota?], for awhile at Grand Forks, and for the past nine years in this city where his son is in business [note: barber].

George Field was married in Covington, Penn., and four children were born, two daughters [one named Flora] and two sons. Both of the girls have died so that only the two boys, Jack [note: real name Moses D., born 1884, Tioga Co., PA], of this city and Harry [born 1886, Tioga Co. PA,] McIntosh, S. D.

survive.

The funeral, was held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Jack Field home and was conducted by the Granite Falls post of the American Legion.

Reverend O. J. Eriksen officiated at the services and there was music by the quartet oF the United Lutheran church. At the conclusion of the home service the body of this aged G. A. R. comrade was escorted through the street by a guard of honor, the procession being headed by the Colors. The pallbearers were Legion men.

At the grave a salute was fired over the body and as it was lowered into its last resting place a bugle call bade it rest.

Exhibitor at Fair Dies Suddenly Here

George Field of Granite Falls died here suddenly Wednesday evening from heart trouble. Mr Field, who was past 86 years of age, exhibited a pair of driving horses at the fair for which he received a blue ribbon. He was taken sick as he was eating supper at a cafe and walked over to the fire hall where death came a few minutes later. The body was taken to Granite Falls where arrangements were made for burial.

[excerpt from this article]

There were two teams of draft horses in Division "A," Charles Hacker taking first, as did Ed Schultz. The only driving team entered was by George Field of Granite Falls, who placed a first. Mr. Field was the gentleman who died in Montevideo on Wednesday, the last day of the fair. He was 86 years old and was well known in Montevideo.

Notes for Orcelia (Celia) Zimmer:

According to family legend, she died on a wagon train In Blaine, Kansas, traveling from PA out west. Family returned to PA. No documentation has been found of this fact other than family memories. Volunteers have looked in vain for cemetery records, especially in the counties where a large number of Pennsylvania Fields lived in Kansas. The wagon train story is suspect as trains were in operation for the area at that time.

In the 1880 census, Charleston, Tioga, Pennsylvania, page 81B, she stated her father was born in New York and her mother was born in Pennsylvania. Flora was the only child.

Notes for George Washington Field:

[field.FTW]

From Jack D. Davis: George Washington Field is my great grandfather. He was born 12/11/1840 in Tioga Co., PA to Nelson Field and Martha Jane McEwen. the family traveled West to Madison Co., IL sometime between 1841 and 1847. Nelson Field died abt. 1847/1848 about the same time Georges brother, Albert was born. Albert is 2 years old in the 1850 Madison Co., IL census. Martha married John Keown in 1848 and her two sons George and Albert were raised by John Keown along with John's three children by his first wife. John and Martha had five children of their own.

George married Susan Narcissus Greening in Madison Co., IL. they later settled in Cowiche, Yakima, Washington where he died in Feb. 1919.

George and Susan had 9 children, Martha Ann, Robert Nelson, Alice Adelia, Jesse Washington, Theresa Narcissus, Andrew Jackson, John Ashley, Eva Luella (my grandmother), and Grace Lulla.

Ladore was a town situated in the southern part of Neosho County, about five miles north of the city of Parsons, on the Neosho Division of the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It was the intention of the M. K. & T. Railroad Company to make this the junction of the main line and the Neosho division of the road. In this event the shops, etc., were to be located here, and the town would have been what Parsons now is. When the company attempted to buy the lands the settlers thinking they had the company fast, refused to sell at anything like a reasonable figure, and the company having other chances, refused to pay the high price at which they held their property. Thus the settlers in attempting to grasp more than was just, lost a favoring opportunity; for the company immediately negotiated for the site of Parsons, and established that city. Ladore was first called Fort Roach, in honor of J. N. Roach, its principal founder.

The report of its probably being made the railroad junction, where shops, etc., were to be built, was the cause operating in favor of its rapid advancement, which, for a time, was scarcely paralleled in the history of town building. So rapid indeed was its growth that in a few years it reached a population of 1,000, and contained a proportionate number of stores, etc., and all the improvements of a fast growing and substantial city. Schoolhouses, churches, and other public enterprises were made, with an idea of permanence. But the avaricious action of the owners of the land, was the secret of its overthrow, for no sooner had the site of Parsons become fixed, than the city, now called Ladore, was wholly moved to that place, and nothing remains of Ladore but a railroad side track, a farm residence, a church building and the postoffice. If you are not navigating this Tri-Counties Site via the left and right sidebars of the Current What's New page you are doing yourself a disservice. You can get to any place on the site easily by making yourself familiar with these subject and place topics. Try them all to be as familiar with the site's 16,000 plus pages as you can. Stop groping in the dark and take the lighted path. That's also the only way you'll find the search engines for the site or have access to the necessary messages I may leave for you. Make it easy on yourself.
