SELECT SCHOOLS.
Academy of Our Lady of Angels, corner of High and E. Market. It is an elegant brick and stone structure. Under the direction of the Sisters of St. Mary.
SS. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic School is situated on High street, and is attached to the church of the same name; it is under the personal supervision of Rev. J.C. Long and the Lady Superior of the Academy of Our Lady of Angels. It has eight class rooms and four teachers, supplied from the Convent. It has a capacity for 250 pupils, and is free.
St. Patrick's Parochial School, located on Park Place near Clinton, is under the supervision of Rev. J.J. Bloomer and the Sisters of Mercy. It has ten class rooms, and is free.

The Young Men's Christian Association was organized in 1858, reorganized in 1883, and has since been incorporated. Building corner East Market and State streets. Officers--Norman J. The work of the Association is subdivided by committees on Education, Membership, Gymnasium, Finance, Executive, Boys' work, Extension, Bible Study, Religious work, Invitation, House and Reception.

Memberships are divided into three classes, limited. $2.00 includes use of reading room, parlor, game rooms and all other privileges, except gymnasium, baths and educational classes; full ticket, $5.00, all privileges, except educational classes; lockers can be rented for $1.00 per year, in addition to full membership fee; unlimited ticket $10.00. No extras. All privileges of the Association. Junior membership, limited, $1.00; full membership $3.00.
RAILWAY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.
The Association building is located on the corner of West Church street and Railroad avenue. Charles L. Shattuck, General Secretary. There is also a reading room at the Northern Central railroad shops. The Association was organized in 1878, building erected in 1881. Price of membership tickets to railway employes $2.00; contributing members $5.00; sustaining membership $10.00. The Association is for the benefit of railway employes of all classes, and is partially supported by the various railroads passing through the city. The privileges enjoyed by membership are: Bath room, reading room, entertainments, lectures, classes, gospel meetings, cottage prayer meetings, attention from the General Secretary and others to sick and injured men. The building contains a fine parlor, meeting hall, reading room, library, barber shop, etc., and is equipped with portable furniture, organ, and piano and also has an emergency hospital equipment for the relief of injured men. There is also a Woman's Auxiliary department to the Association, presided over by Mrs. W.H. Van Kuren, 509 Herrick street.
D., L. & W. DEPT. OF YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.
This department of the Y. M. C. A. is composed of about 150 members among the employes of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railway, and is managed by a committee of railway men. The building, which is perfect and complete in construction, is located on Lackawanna avenue corner of Division street, and is considered far the best for railway work outside the city of New York. The reading room, open days only, and wash rooms are open day and night. W.M. Bennett, President. F.P. Browne is employed as General Secretary; Frank W. Swaygert, Assistant General Secretary. The Ladies' Auxiliary to the D., L. & W. Department of the Y. M. C. A., organized in 1887, have about 60 members.
THE WOMEN'S BANNER CLUB.
The Women's Banner Club is a Christian Association, organized in October, 1894, to be "unsectarian in principle and philanthropic in practice" and for the improvement of its members. Beginning with October, 1895, the Society hired and fitted up a house for the double purpose of holding its meetings and providing a pleasant home for young women employed in business and otherwise, who may see fit to avail themselves of its advantages. Present location 637 Winsor avenue, where the society holds weekly meeting every Tuesday night. To aid particularly in its support, suppers are held monthly at the parlors of the society during the autumn, winter and spring seasons, and every Saturday night throughout the summer. Arnot-Ogden Memorial. Located on Roe avenue. Main building erected in 1887-8 by Mrs. Marianna Arnot Ogden and presented by her to the city of Elmira. It is a charitably institution where the suffering from diseases that come within its scope may be received at a nominal charge or, if necessary, without compensation, and is also open to paying patients, who prefer its superior care and treatment. It is one of the finest equipped and best arranged institutions of its character in the state. A training school for nurses is also attached.

The Hospital is open to visitors on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week, between the hours of 3 and 5 pm. Sunday is a day of rest for nurses and patients, but relatives and friends of those under treatment may be admitted in special cases by permission of the Superintendent.
City and County Hospital, adjoining Court House, under supervision of Dr. Walter L. Byrne, County Physician; Dr. Gideon D. Smith, City Physician. Its object is to receive emergency cases at any time. Sick persons are received on recommendation of the Mayor and Overseer of the Poor.
D.L. & W. Dept. Y. M. C. A. Association Hospital, Lackawanna avenue cor. Division street. This hospital is for the care of injured employes of the D.L. & W. Railway. Trained nurses in charge and under the supervision of Dr. Henry Flood, Surgeon.

IMPROVED ORDER OF RED MEN.
The Improved Order of Red Men is the oldest American secret benevolent society in existence, deriving its origin from the Red Men's societies organized in colonial days, the earliest of which was in existence in the year 1770. During the revolution and until the war of 1812, these societies were local in character and of a political nature. A consolidation was effected October 14, 1833, in the city of Baltimore, Md., and the present title adopted. It is now purely social and benevolent, non-sectarian and non-partisan. HOME FOR THE AGED.
The incorporation papers for the Association of the Home for Aged Men and Women in the City of Elmira, Chemung county, NY, were executed April 14, 1874; completed by Judge Balcom's signature and filed in clerk's office June 14, 1874; recorded June 18, 1874. The Association having received a deed from Dr. E. Eldridge and wife of four acres of ground, located in Eldridge Park, erected a suitable building fronting Grand Central avenue, above Warren, to accommodate a large number of aged men and women. The work is conducted by a most energetic, earnest association of ladies, who have received large subscriptions from the public. The corporate name of this association is "Home for the Aged." HACKNEY FEES.
Section 7. The prices or rates of fare to be taken by or paid to the owners or drivers of hackey coaches, cabs or carriages, shall be as follows, to wit:
For carrying one passenger from one place in the city to another, Fifty Cents.........$ .50

Section 8. No owner or driver of any hackney coach, cab or carriage, in the city of Elmira, shall ask, demand or receive any larger sum than he or they may be entitled to receive as aforesaid, under the penalty of FIVE DOLLARS for every offense.
And no owner or driver shall demand or receive from any such person or passenger, any extra compensation, or any sum whatever, for carrying and transporting with such person or passenger, in or upon such hackney coach, cab or carriage, any ordinary baggage, or luggage belonging to any such person or passenger, to or from any place in the city, under a penalty of FIVE DOLLARS.
Section 9. The number of the license of every hackney coach, cab or carriage shall be painted in legible characters in a conspicuous place on the outside thereof, or on the lamps, and Sections 7 and 8 of this ordinance, with the name of the owner of said coach, cab or carriage, shall be framed and hung up in some conspicuous place in the inside of such coach, cab or carriage, under a penalty of FIVE DOLLARS for each offense.
Each driver of a hackney coach, cab or carriage, licensed as hereinbefore provided, shall wear in some conspicuous place on his hat or cap, painted or printed in a plain, legible manner, the word "Hackman," together with the number of his coach, cab or carriage, on each side thereof in figures, the letters to be not more than one-half inch in length, under a penalty of FIVE DOLLARS for each offense.
