GERALD NEIL AUSTIN
The above is a photo of the Mainesburg boy who was killed in action
in France recently.
Killed In Action
Gerald Neil Austin Killed I France In Battle With the Germans Early
This Month.
A telegram was received Sunday evening by Mrs. Cora Austin, of
Mainsburg, that her son, Gerald Neil, had been killed in action in France
on June 6. He was the son of Cora and Archie Austin, and is the grandson
of Jesse Austin, of Mainesburg. He was educated in the Mainesburg
schools and afterwards went to work in the South. He enlisted in
New Jersey about a year ago and was at Camp Greenleaf until he was sent
to France about the middle of April. He was a member of Co. (unreadable),
30th Infantry and was 21 years old. He is the first boy from this
vicinity to offer his life for his country and his death brings the war
very close to home.
Joyce,
I was just going thru Pat Gobea's transcription of the 1918 Troy Gazette
on Tri-Counties site and came across this one about Gerald Austin's death.
This one says June 4 where the telegram states June 6.
