LOVE OF COMMUNITY PUTS OUT WELCOME MAT IN SOUTHPORT
It's at a major gateway into the Elmira area from the
south, but until recently, the intersection of Broadway and Pennsylvania
Avenue in Southport was anything but inviting.
That's all changing, as businesses and community volunteers
have worked to turn an overgrown and unsightly corner into an attractive
little park and welcome mat for the community. By the time the project
is ready to be dedicated later this fall, it will feature three monuments,
attractive landscaping, a large "Welcome to Southport" sign, three flag-poles
that will fly the U.S., N.Y.S., and Southport town flags, a stamped walkway
and flood lights to illuminate the area. etc.
(the three monuments will include: a historical one (designed by Mary
& I) showing Leon D. Windy Smith, Clara Babe Cook, Julius Lars Hoftrup,
the plank road with tole gates, and a mill depitcting the mills of Southport;
a Veterans Monument, and a monument showing who has volunteered work,
donated money, etc.) I've tried to copy the copy of the front of our monument
for you, but it doesn't come out very good, can't get it dark enought.
Well, all this to say that I just found out that all this is going to
take place this coming Saturday, November 4, 2006
at 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Penna.Ave. & Broadway.
Thought you might be interested in coming.

Jones appointed President
of Bradford County Historical Society
Troy Gazette Register 19 NOV 2006
TOWANDA – J. Kelsey Jones was appointed to the position of President
of the Bradford County historical Society by the 15-member Board of Trustees
at their November 6 board meeting. Jones most recently held the position
of President Elect on the Board. He will be one of the youngest board
members ever appointed to the position. He has been involved in the
Bradford County community in the preservation of historical and genealogical
records for many years. Jones became a life member of the society
in August 1987.
Jones stated, “When I could first drive at age 16 I would make the one
hour drive from the northwest corner of Bradford County where I was raised
to the historical society, then on Main Street. No one really took
a 16-year-old kid very serious about their interest in Bradford County
history and the search of their ancestry. But, I kept showing up.”
Jones further added, “then in college there are times I probably should
have been in class when I was off copying the transcription from a marker
in some rural cemetery.” That compulsive search to learn one’s identity
by learning of the past led him forward.
Jones hopes the community is aware of the historical society housed
in what was once the former jail, which consists of a three-story stone
structure on Pine Street in Towanda, one block off Main Street. Jones
stated, “the Bradford County Historical Society and Museum is truly one
of the most impressive facilities in the state of Pennsylvania. With
extensive archives and exhibits it is one of the best research centers
for genealogy and local history.” Jones would encourage anyone to
visit the Bradford County Historical Society or visit online at http://www.bradfordhistory.com.
Jones, a native of Bradford County, whose maternal ancestors were early
settlers in Wells and Columbia Townships and his paternal ancestors on
Barclay Mountain, is a graduate of Troy High School and Elmira College
with further studies at the Philadelphia Institute, the University of Oklahoma,
and the New York State Bankers Institute. Jones brings to the Board
a strong background in finance, marketing, and leadership skills with a
career that spans tax and finance, investments, and more recently economic
development. Since 2000, he has been the Executive Director of a
public private partnership involved in economic and community development
in Watkins Glen, NY, which recently announced the construction of a $14
million dollar resort and conference hotel on the Seneca Lake waterfront.
Jones is credited with creating Leadership Tioga in Owego, NY, in 1998
and Leadership Schuyler in Watkins Glen, NY, in 2001, having graduated
nearly 100 participants from the latter program.
Jones is also CEO of the Schuyler County Industrial Development Agency
and serves on several other Boards including chairing the Schuyler County
Empire Zone Board; the Regional Economic Development and Energy Corporation
Board, Corning, NY; Chemung Schuyler Steuben Workforce Development Board,
Corning, NY; Southern Tier Central Regional Development and planning Board,
Corning, NY; and Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce, Watkins Glen, NY.
Jones is involved with the New York State Economic Development Council,
New York State Business Council, Leadership Schuyler Advisory Committee,
and several other state and regional development organizations.
Jones has been a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants,
the Huguenot Society of America, and the National Society Sons of the American
Revolution. Beside his love for genealogy and early American history,
Jones has long been an avid Australian Shepherd dog exhibitor, showing
at worldwide events, and having produced Best In Show champions in a long
career. He is a member of the United States Australian Shepherd Association,
having served on their Legislative Committee, and the Australian Shepherd
Club of America. Jones resides in the Seeley Creek Valley near Mosherville.

Use the Drop Down Windowto
search selected areas of site for Obituaries and other slected information
These represent directories in the site's structure. Clipping
section includes scrapbooks of obituaries, marriages, gossip, etc. It also
includes new obits where the cemetery is not identified. The Obit by cemetery
pages are by county BUT obits may be on an obit by cemetery page OR in
the Clipping - scrapbook section. Check both. Also remember that people
are often buried in a different county than the one in which they lived
or died. Another point to be aware of is that some of the very small cemeteries
that have few obits will have the obits on the cemetery listing page. They
will be missed by this partitioned search of just the obituary directories.
They will show up on the search which covers the entire site or the burials.
If you do not click the drop down list, you will think
this is just the same form of the search engine we have had for several
years. It is NOT - It is a major enhancement of its utility which I will
develop further depending on positive feedback I do or do not get. At this
point it partitions the obituaries and cemetery listings only. While obits
are added daily, the search engine in not reindexed that frequently. Added
obituaries will only register when the search engine is reindexed.
Here is an IMPORTANT tip - If you use a DATE restriction in your search,
be aware that refers to the date I last changed a particular page - It
is a file date, NOT a date for an event.
This first version allows searches just for burials
and obituaries
Below is an expanded version of the above
with even more categories to narrow your search to individual sections
of the site. Note this allows you to search individual directories
of the site. if related information is in a different directory, this search
will not find it - example - If military information is included in the
family directory, it will not be found searching the military directory.
Some pages that are older have not been relocated to the appropriate directories
yet, so not finding an item where you expect does not mean it is not on
the site.
If you do not take the time to press the drop down list, you will not
have a clue how this works.
