1841
Dreadful Disaster--Great loss of Life.--The American ship Governor Fenner, Captain Andrews, which sailed from Liverpool for New York on the 19th ult., came in contact, on the following morning at two o’clock, off Helyhead, with the steamer Nottingham, from Dublin for Liverpool.  The bows of the ship were stove in by the confusion, and the captain on finding the situation of his vessel, called upon the crew and passengers to save themselves, but in a minute the ship sunk, with sixteen of the crew and all the passengers amounting to 122 souls.  The captain saved himself by grasping a rope, which hung over the steamer’s side.  The mate was also saved by jumping for the fore yard arm on the steamer’s deck.  The wreck of the Governor Fenner was seen floating off Lambay, up on the Irish coast, on Friday.  (Wednesday, March 31, 1841, Tioga Eagle, Wellsborough, Tioga Co, Pa.)

Herrick-Grinold
From the Lawrence Sentinel.  In Troopsburg, Steuben co., on Sunday, the 4th inst., by ____, Esq., Mr. Edward Herrick, of Lawrenceville, Tioga co, Pa., to Miss Luely Grinold, of the former place.  We are informed that Miss G. was under matrimonial engagements to a Mr. H. B. of this place, and the time being fixed, an invitation was given to Mr. Herrick to attend the wedding.  At the time appointed the guests were assembled and all things in readiness for the ceremony, save the presence of the bridegroom, who was, it seems, unwillingly detained in another quarter.  In this unfortunate position of affairs what was to be done!  it would not do to disappoint the assembled guests--a proposition was made by Mr. H. to Miss G. which was accepted at once, and the happy couple were forthwith joined in Hymen’s banns!  Iin the mean time, Mr. B., effecting his release from “durance vile,” flew on the wings of love to meet his “intended,” but alas!  he was too late--upon his arrival he ascertained that his beloved Miss C. had just become Mrs. H., and consequently he drew a blank, whilst the capital prize was allotted to the lucky Edward.  We hope that all young men will hereafter bearing mind the necessity of “striking whilst the iron is hot.”  (Wednesday, July 14, 1841, Tioga Eagle, Wellsborough, Tioga Co, Pa.)

Marriage of the Presidency.--His Excellency John Tyler, President of the U. States, was married on Monday the 1st inst., in New York city, at the church of the Ascension, by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Onderdonk, to Miss Julia Gardener, of that city. The President’s Bride.  From the Public Ledger.  The young lady whom the President has just married possesses charms which might seduce a much younger man than John Tyler into a matrimonial noose.  She has a bright eye, radiantly white teeth, an exquisite complexion, with a color like the rose, a stately and peculiarly erect carriage, dignified and gentle manner, and last but not least a handsome fortune.  Her father was a worthy, excellent person, & deserved a better fate than that he met with, in being killed by the explosion of the great gun of the Princeton steamship.  The bride’s mother is living--a lady-like and estimable woman.  She has a younger sister and two brothers, young men held in much regard by their friends and acquaintances.  Altogether, the bridegroom is to be felicitated.  What is more, we are assured, confidentially, that the bride is a “Tyler man at heart.”  So there is nothing to mar the course of reciprocal affection. Bless by the nuptial tie that binds
Those loving hearts in one;
May each one in the other find
Their joys on earth begun.

Long life and happiness be theirs--
Prosperity and peace;
May they rejoice in after years
That they were joined in this.

And may the bridegroom ever prove
Whate’er lover seemed to be--
The smiling bride more ardent love,
And life roll on a placid sea.

And may this young and happy pair,
Go on in life uneven way,
Without a pang of grief or care
To make them rue the bridal day.

May disappointment’s withering blight
Ne’er meet the young bride in her bloom,
To turn the day that oped so bright
Into a gloomy afternoon.

And now I’ve bid you happy be,
Although unknown to you--
Good-bye to Mr. Thomas V.,
And Mrs. Videon, too.  [Comm.]  (Thursday, January 11, 1849, Tioga Eagle, Wellsboro, Tioga Co, Pa.)
