Do You Know that you can search just the 355 pages of our

on this site  by using the Diaries button in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? But diaries and letters are wonderful sources to understand the culture of time and place. Read them and enjoy them slowly.
Hi Joyce,

I'm sorry, I'm a novice at computers.  I sent you my grandmother's diary, or hope I did! (Alice Van de Mark Jackson).  She was living in Wyalusing, PA at the time.  It just kind of shows how women lived then.  Granddad didn't have steady work and she took in boarders to help out.

Love your site.  Love, Karen Jackson Hillis

Note from Joyce - This appears to be a five year diary which was a popular format for many years. Alice kept it current in 1936, 37 and part way through 1938. After that she wrote in it sporadically. Karen has transcribed it as it appears on the pages with the same date for each year.

But out of his side to be equal to him,
Under his arm to be protected,
And near his heart to be loved.
