The Susquehanna River Archaeological Center of Native Indian Studies (SRAC) is proud to announce that the Third Annual "DrumBeats Through Time" event will be held on October 21st in the Patterson Auditorium on the Guthrie Campus from 9am to 6pm.
The annual event was created for the surrounding communities to learn more about the region's local prehistoric beginnings and to be able to see and touch the evidence of those people who were here thousands of years before the white person arrived.
This year's event will include the region's largest display of locally found Native Indian artifacts including special exhibits and new collections as well as dynamic speakers with educational presentations throughout the day. Collectors are also asked to bring artifacts that they would like recorded in SRAC's online research database for our region, as digital records will be made on site throughout the event at no cost. Also, other historic and archaeological groups will display exhibits.
The schedule for "Drumbeats" is as follows:
9-9:45am - Museum time, introductions, meet and greet, etc
9:45am - Deb Twigg, Executive Director of the Susquehanna River Archaeological Center - welcome, brief intro about SRAC
10-11am - "The Mound Builders Were Here" by Deb Twigg is an explanation about the Mound Builders, and the "evidence" we have that proves they were here. Many artifacts and pottery from this culture and found right in our area will be on display for the audience to see and touch throughout the event.
11-noon - "In Search of Freidenshutten" by Ted Keir in which he will talk about a site called "Freidenshutten, near Wyalusing, PA. Ted was involved with the archaeological dig and has many artifacts from the old Moravian Missionary/Indian Town....The artifacts and pottery from that site will be on display for the audience to see and touch throughout the event.
Noon -1pm - break for lunch & more time to peruse more of the museum.
1-2pm - "Why Sullivan Marched" by Dick Cowles is all about the issues and the events (such as "Indian raids," treaties that were broken, and the Wyoming massacre) that led up to Sullivan's March through our region. For those that have heard of "Sullivan's March," but don’t know he did, this presentation is for you!
2:30-3:30pm "A Virtual Tour of Sullivan's March" by Dr. Earl Robinson will take the audience on a virtual tour that retraces the steps of the first days of the Sullivan campaign as it winded through our own region. Mr. will use quotes from actual letters and other historical documentation as he uses video footage of the actual places where the events took place, right here in our own backyards.
3:30-4:30pm - To be announced.
5pm - closing statements and more time to talk and see more of the
museum.
Please plan to attend this incredible day of celebration of our region's
history created for adults and children alike to actively learn about the
amazing early history of this region and to see and touch the actual evidence
our past.
Admission is free, donations are welcome.
