1890s Weekend 2006
In 1892 the Mansfield Normal School hosted the first occurrence in the country of a football game played under lights. For more information see Chester P. Bailey's article about it. Starting in 1992, Mansfield Borough and Mansfield University started an annual celebration to commemorate and celebrate it. The event  includes a reenactment of the football game in vintage uniforms, as well as a parade, a museum tent, food concessions, craft booths, and other events of interest. Mansfield High School also schedules alumni events for this weekend. Some of the people wear vintage clothing to commemorate the event. My own idea of vintage this year was my jeans from 2005. Fortunately others get more in the spirit of it and enjoy doing it.
Chester and Mary Bailey, former owners and editors of the Mansfield Advertiser, founded the Fabulous 1890s Museum. The museum tent incudes displays of Chester's extensive photo collection, as well as displays on Grange artifacts, railroad artifacts, and  wool spinning display. Displays vary from year to year. For the first time this year, I put on two computerized photo slide shows. Unfortunately there was so much going on I forgot to take a good picture of my display. I also forgot to take a picture of Chester and Mary so I am using a photo of them in the musum tent in 2001.

I will present here some of the photos I took of the 1890s Day 2006 celebration September 29 and 30.

This school bus was used on State Road in Sullivan Township and is part of the 1890s Display. It is mislabelled as a Mainesburg School bus, but it was used outside the village instead, as far as I know..  This is embarrassing but this is the only photo I took of my display early on the second day when my camera lens was fogged over from the cold. I intended to take one later when there were people around and a dry lens, but got distracted. I showed 330 Mansfield photos in one program - from 1855 to 2006 and 200 photos in the other of Smythe Park, The Mansfield Fair and all the schools. The first show also ran in the First Citizens Bank for the two days.
Balloon Rides are a popular activity. Barb BAILEY McConnell is in one of these and enjoyed her ride out to the golf course. Mansfield University band led the parade. Williamson, Liberty and Mansfield High School bands were also in the parade.
Above -Women's Studies reenacted our Women's Suffrage Movement. Were they doing that in 1890? Yes, and in 1840, and still in 1920. Tradition dies hard, but gratefully, that one did and women finally could vote.

I don't know the name of the conveyance to the right, but it is fueled by pedal power and was a perfect fit in the motorless parade.
