Newspaper Article: Dr. R C. Bastian died suddenly of a heart attack while visiting an other physician for a physical check-up last night. The death which came after routine day in his office, came as a shock to this community because of both Dr. Bastian's personal service and appeal and the fact that the eminence he attained in 16 years as an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist has brought considerable recognition to Williamsport in medical circles. The doctor, who would have been 54 next Jan 9, had been in apparent good health. He had been at his hunting camp at Brookside only last week. Dr. Bastian practiced general medicine here for a decade after completing his internship at Frankford Hospital, Philadelphia in 1927. Then, after 18 months of special training at Tulane University, he began his practice in eye, ear, nose, throat work. Dr. Bastian held the position of president-elect in the Lycoming County Medical Society. The society's annual meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday Jan. 7. The Bastian family was located at Salladasburg before coming to Williamsport, and it was at Salladasburg that Dr. Bastian was born. His parents were Dr. C. B. and Emma Jane Schuch Bastian. The Doctor was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1918, and he attended Susquehanna University and Jefferson Medical College, where he was graduated in 1925. Besides his activities in the county Medical Society, Dr. Bastian's interests identified him with Lodge No. 106 of F and AM, the Williamsport Consistory, and the American College of Surgeons. He was a fellow of the International College of Surgeons. Locally, Dr. Bastian was elected in June 1950, to the board of managers of the Williamsport Hospital, where he was also a member of the staff in his capacity as EENT specialist. From 1934 to 1938, Dr. Bastian served a term as coroner of Lycoming County. A democrat, he was the last member of his party to hold that office in this county. The doctor was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bastian, the former Magaret Collins, Of Lewes, Del., is serving a two-year term as president of the Woman's Club. The Bastian residence is on Vallamont Drive. Surviving besides Mrs. Bastian, are three children, Robert C., Jr., a junior at Dartmouth; Catherine Ann and Judith C., at home; two brothers, Dr. W. Clair Bastian and Harold Bastian, and two sisters, Mrs. Jeanette Robinson and Mrs. Caroline Frye.
