Newspaper Article: TRAGEDY BESETS FAMILY - Dewey
Gamble's Death in New York Third Fatal Accident - Dead man's sister killed
in airplane crash at Pottsville four years ago and brother drowned in Pine
Creek in 1931 - Wednesday has thrice spelled tragedy in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. G A Gamble of 445 Market Street, whose son, Dewey, 35 years old
was drowned in the Harlem River, in New York City, last Wednesday. It was
Wednesday July 11, 1928, that a daughter Bernice, 23 was killed in an airplane
crash at Pottsville and Wednesday Aug 19, 1931 that another son, Milford,
29 was found dead in Pine Creek near Camp Kline. POLICE GET MESSAGE - Word
of Dewey's death was received in Williamsport over the city police department's
teletype from New York City. The police communicated with the Gamble family
and Wednesday night a daughter, Mrs. Fay Bordinger, went to New York to
claim the body. The man apparently had fallen from a dock along the river.
There seemed to be no eye witness to the accident and the metropolitan
police could not give much information about it. The man's body was recovered
within a short time after the drowning. He was an accomplished musician,
being especially expert with the "musical saw" A saw, violin bow and guitar
were found on the dock. The airplane accident in which Bernice Gamble died
happened while she was en route from New York City to California with the
pilot of the ship, Morris Titterington, to whom she was to be married.
Titterington also was killed in the crash. Funeral Services Private - The
other son, Milford who died in 1931 was believed to have been stricken
with a heart attack while he was fishing on a rock and to have fallen into
the creek. Private funeral services for Dewey Gamble will be held at the
Bastian-Maneval funeral parlors tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock with interment
in Wildwood Cemetery. Mr. Gamble is survived by his parents , his sister,
Mrs. Bordinger; two brothers, Harry and Durant. His wife and two children
live at Antes Fort.
DROWNS IN HARLEM RIVER - Dewey Gamble, aged 35, son of Mr. and Mrs. G A Gamble drowned in the Harlem river, NYC, some time yesterday, according to a police teletype message received here. Details of the drowning are vague. New York police when questioned by members of the family said they had not leaned whether he fell into the water accidentally, was pushed in or had jumped in. Mrs. Fay Bordinger of this city, a sister, is going to New York to secure the body and learn further facts surrounding the death. Mr. Gamble lived in this city until about 3 years ago. Members of the family said last night they had not heard anything from him for a year. His wife and two children, from whom he was separated, are living at Antes Fort. |
