Newspaper Article: MURDER CASE CLOSED WITH SUICIDE OF OSCAR YOUNG; HOWER FURNISHES MOTIVE: The discovery of the body of Oscar Young, 46, Hoagland's Run, ia a wooded section near Bloomsburg Monday evening ended a 14-hour search by state police for the suspected murderer of Lester J. Shaffer, 37, also of Hoagland's Run. State police found Young's body in West Hemlock Township, a half mile from the home of George W. Hower, Bloomsburg, RD2, who apparently had accompanied him to the scene of the shooting. Young's death was termed a suicide by John M. Evans, Columbia County coroner. The body was found at 7:10 pm. Closes case: Lee B. Lansberry, Lycoming County district attorney, said the discovery of Young's body closes the murder case here. State police, however, lodged Hower in the Lycoming County Jail for questioning today. The Shaffer shooting occurred abut 4 am Monday at the victim's home on Hoagland's Run, about 20 miles north of Williamsport. HOWER QUESTIONED: Hower was questioned by Mr. Lansberry and Cpl. Melvin L. Woodring, state police, for more than an hour at the County Jail. The questioning established Young's motive for the killing as his fear that Mr. Shaffer would make a statement to police which would cause him to be returned to prison. Hower told the local officials that Young had come to his boarding place at the home of his brother, Sam Hower. He said that was shortly after midnight Monday. Hower said that at that time Young told him he was going to get two persons, and that he was in another mix-up and the parole officer was after him. Young then invited Hower to go along to Williamsport to take his sister to her home. After leaving the sister, Young told Hower he was going to his cabin and they drove north toward Hoagland's Run. Hower told police he had no idea where they were because of his inability to read. WAITED IN CAR: He said that after driving some distance, Young turned the car around in front of a hunting cabin and got out. He told Hower to wait in the car and then left. Hower told police he was gone about 45 minutes, and when he came back, seemed quite nervous. He got in the car and they drove rapidly back to Hower's home. Upon their arrival at his home, Hower said, "he told me he plugged that fellow five times and said that he was going to get another one yet and he said that was Mary Urn (Learn)." She had been a complainant in a previous case which had sent Young to prison on a larceny charge. Asked if Young ever mentioned Lester Shaffer, Hower said, "He talked about Shaffer, but never Lester, and said that he had had a fight with Shaffer last week." DESCRIBES FIGHT: Questioned further about the fight, Hower told police "Oscar told me that Shaffer pulled a gun on him and that Shaffer's wife grabbed it, pushed the muzzle of the gun in the air, then Oscar knocked Shaffer down with a chair or a stool and put him unconscious and Oscar ran out of the house. That's what Oscar told me, but I don't know anything about it." Hower told police they had had a few drinks before starting for Williamsport and he thought that Young had put a rifle in the car, but that Young had told him it was a broom. Police released Hower for lack of evidence against him. HOWER LOCATED: A teletype was sent by state police describing Young. Hower, and the car used by the two. At about 2 p.m. Monday state police located the car at the Hower home and arrested Hower. Police sent guards to the Learn home, located several miles from the Hower home. One officer was left with the car, and others started along a path which led toward the Learn house. It was along this path that police found Young's lifeless body. The rifle lay nearby. According to Capt. Norman E. Annich, commanding officer of Troop D., state police, Young apparently had fired a shot through his right temple. RE-LOADED RIFLE: Coroner Evans reported that after firing the bullet into his brain, Young apparently lived long enough to reload the single-shot rifle, for when police discovered it there was a bullet in the chamber. Funeral services for Mr. Shaffer will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Sonestown Evangelical United Brethren Church. He is survived by his wife Phoebe; three children, Rens, Marguerite Ella, and Marian; a sister, Mary Shaffer, Laporte; and his mother, Mrs. Ellsworth Fleming, of near Powys. Interment will be made in the Sonestown cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 pm Wednesday. Taylor, Pastor of the High Street Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park. |
