Newspaper Article: Trout Run child killed when shot in mistake for Woodchuck - Jack Dauber 9 year old on of Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn Dauber, of Trout Run was instantly killed about 5 o'clock last evening when he was mistaken for a woodchuck. Young Dauber had gone to visit his great aunt, Miss Jane Covert about a mile above Trout Run on the old road and was playing in a small stream with his head above the bank. David Lloyd of Williamsport and employe of the Pennsylvania Power and Light company who has a cabin nearby saw the moving head and though tit was a woodchuck. The child is survived by his parent and four brothers and four sisters. Dr. Charles Youngman of Williamsport, Lycoming County coroner went to Trout Run last night and held a preliminary investigation. Newspaper Article: AARON LEROY DAY SHOT THROUGH
NECK THURSDAY EVENING - body found yesterday noon by William Wright - No
trace of Assassin. BULLET FIRED FROM OUTSIDE - Sitting in kitchen reading
newspaper when crime committed - wallet missing from clothes.: Aaron LeRoy
Day age 57 years was found dead about noon yesterday on the floor of his
home about half way between Cogan House and White Pine, an evident case
of cold blooded murder. Capt. C E Whipple, county detective, received a
call yesterday afternoon from a woman, who did not identify herself, telling
him there had been a murder and if he would go to Taylor's store at Cogan
House they would tell him there how to get to where the body was found.
Capt. Whipple went to the store and was directed to the Day home about
2 miles from there. Mr. Day who lived alone was last seen alive about 7:30
o'clock Thursday night when William Wright took some groceries he had purchased
to him and received pay for them. Yesterday about noon Mr. Wright who had
not see Day since Thursday went to the house to see what had become of
him and found him dead. He knocked on the door and receiving no response
he tried the door and found it unlocked. He opened it and entered. Earlier
in the day Owen Bumgardner had gone to the house and received no answer
to his knocking on the door. As he left he noticed a hole in a window,
which had not been there when he was last at the place. Mr. day's body
was found on the floor of the kitchen. Close to him was a copy of the Gazette
and Bulletin which he had apparently been reading when the assassin's bullet
cut him down. On the table alongside was a lamp and fragments of the broken
lamp chimney. From his examination of the premises Captain Whipple reconstructed
the tragedy as happening as follows: Mr. Day was evidently seated at the
table reading the Gazette and Bulletin when the bullet which took his life
crashed through the window about eight feet in his rear, struck him in
the back of the neck, hit the lamp chimney without upsetting the lamp and
then buried itself in the wall, where it remained. The body in lurching
from the chair did not upset the lamp. On a direct line with the bullet
hole in the window and the point where the bullet lodged in the wall is
the crotch of a tree and it is possible that the murderer used this crotch
as a rest for his gun. WALLET MISSING - A search of the pockets of the
dead man disclosed only a very small amount of change, less than one dollar.
He is known to have carried a wallet, which has not yet been found and
this may possibly indicate robberty. So far as could be noted the house
had not been ransacked. Dr. Robert C. Bastian, county coroner was called
and after an investigation allowed the body to be moved. It was brought
to the Bastian-Maneval funeral home here. Dr. Bastian said last night the
bullet went through the middle of the man's neck. An inquest will be held
he announced. Following a study of the case he turned it over to the county
authorities. The state police have been called into the case and are working
along with Captain Whipple and District Attorney John C Youngman. Mr. Day
is survived by a son, a daughter, four brothers and three sisters. His
daughter Mrs. Edan Bernstine and son L L Day, both reside in this city.
The brothers are D. W. Day of Brookside; David Day of Milton; Edward Day
of Cogan Station and W L Day of this city. The sisters are Mrs. Mary Bunnell
and Mrs Emma Weigle both of this city, and Mrs. Elmer Quimby of Cogan House.
An autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon at the Williamsport Hospital on the body of Aaron Leroy Day, of White Pine - Cogan House road in Cogan House township, who was murdered sometime early Thursday morning. The authorities announced following the autopsy that the examination by Dr. L M Knauber, who conducted it, bears out the theory that Mr. Day was shot as he sat at the table in the kitchen of his home reading a newspaper. The bullet evidently from a rifle, entered the back of the neck at about the position of the collar on his shirt and came out just under the right eye. The bullet shattered the lens of the man's spectacles on the right side. The physician found that the bullet did not touch the brain but fractured five vertebra and severed the spinal cord. William Miller and John Funck, of the state police force were in the city yesterday and went to the scenen of the shooting. Mr. funck who is the state police ballistic expert, obtained the bullet from the wall of the kitchen and returned with it to Harrisburg for the purpose of determining the type of gun, the caliber and other information. The authorities are of the opinion that a rifle probably was used and that it was discharged from a resting position. It first passed through a window pane, then through Mr. Day's head and lodged in the wall at the opposite side of the room. SUSPECT IS RELEASED: Sergeant Miller and Capt. C E Whipple, county detective are at Cogan House Township today again. Yesterday afternoon at the direction of the district attorney photographs and surveys were made of the scene. In the course of the investigation a suspect was questioned but was released a short time later when he established a complete alibi. Efforts to trace any considerable amount of money were fruitless. Day had about thirty-six cents in his clothes when found lying on the kitchen floor on Sunday afternoon. No other money was found on the premises except some old coins. The wallet, which he is believed to have carried is missing. The authorities were unable to substantiate the rumor that he had drawn a considerable sum from a bank although several banks were visited including the one at Liberty. Funeral services for Aaron Leroy Day of Cogan House township will be held Thursday with a prayer service at 10 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Howard Bernstine, and further services at the White Pine church, White Pine. Interment will be made in White Pine cemetery. Friends may view the body at the home of Mrs. Bernstine Wednesday evening. |
