Newspaper Article: Leaving a note indicating suicidal intent, Mrs. Emma J. Imms, 74, of 1920 Lacomic street, went to Lycoming creek near the Memorial avenue bridge about 9:30 o'clock last night, tied a rope to her right leg, fastened the other end to some bushes on shore and then took her life by drowning. Mr. and Mrs. Lockoff, the dead woman's son-in-law and daughter with whom she as living, said Mrs. Imms had been in ill health for more than a year. Mr. and Mrs. Lockoff were at church last night when the woman left the house. The first intimation of the drowning came when three young men who were crossing the Memorial avenue bridge heard moans and saw bushes moving along the bank of the creek. They rushed to a nearby house for a light and went to the spot where the bushes moved. There they discovered a rope attached to the shore, and on pulling it they found the body of Mrs. Imms. They pulled the body partly out of the water and called city police. Sergeant Berthold Stopper and Officers Ray Fedder and Truman Logan went to the scene and finished the task of retrieving the body. Meanwhile Mr. Lockoff, who had discovered a note on the table of his home reading: "Down over bank, opposite Riggles," rushed to the creek and found that the body of Mrs. Imms had been recovered. County Coroner Charles L. Youngman said he considered the case clearly suicide and that no inquest will be held. The three young men who heard the moans and first discovered the body were Harry Fisher, Mervin McQuillian and Samuel Bastress. |
