Newspaper Article: WOUNDS FATAL TO MRS. A. B.
SIMMONS - Wife of Former Police Officer and Restaurant Man dies at hospital
after being found at home. - Mrs. Albert B. Simmons, 71 died in the Williamsport
hospital at 12:45 o'clock this afternoon of wounds on the foot and arm
which were apparently self inflicted. Mrs. Simmons was found in the kitchen
of her home at 8 o'clock this morning, and from the quantities of blood
it appeared that she had gashed herself some time before. Mrs. Simmons
is survived by her husband, who is a well known restaurant man and former
member of the city police force; by two daughters, Mrs. Beryl Richardson,
and Mrs. Clifford C. Maiers, both of Buffalo, NY. It is thought that Mrs.
Simmons took her life on account of despondency over the ill health of
her husband and her own physical condition. She was unconscious when found
in her kitchen but regained consciousness for a few minutes just before
she died. The first indication that something was amiss at the Simmons
home came about 8:40 o'clock this morning when the police ambulance was
called. Before the ambulance could start the order was countermanded. Shortly
after 9 o'clock this morning Captain Joseph Schmucker was called to the
scene to make an investigation. Schmucker reported that a knife and a pair
of scissors were lying beside the spot where Mrs. Simmons was found in
the kitchen. He talked to Mr. Simmons who said that both he and Mrs. Simmons
had arisen at 5 o'clock this morning and that she appeared in good spirits
at the time. Mr. Simmons went back to bed and it was not until shortly
after 8 o'clock that he arose and found the prostrate form of his wife
in a pool of blood. Mr. Simmons and other occupants of the apartment in
which Mrs. Simmons lived at first expressed the opinion that foul play
might have been involved. Captain Schmucker tentatively adopted the attempted
suicide theory on account of the position of the scissors and knife and
the general appearance of the kitchen. The city detective became more secure
in this conviction when he visited the Williamsport hospital and was shown
gashes on both the right and left arm of Mrs. Simmons where she had apparently
tried to sever an artery before she succeeded in cutting the artery in
her foot. County coroner Robert C Bastian said that he did not believe
an inquest would be necessary in view of the investigation.

Newspaper Article: Miss Jennie L Simmons, age
65, one of the first nurses to be stationed here by the Pennsylvania State
Department of public health, died suddenly at 6 o'clock Thursday evening
at the Williamsport hospital. She was admitted to the hospital Wednesday
evening in a critical condition after suffering from arthritis for several
years. Miss Simmons had been very ill since September and it is thought
that pneumonia caused her death. Miss Simmons was born in Eddyville, NY
and came to the Williamsport Hospital for her training as a nurse. She
supplemented her study here with a course at the General Memorial Hospital,
New York City and then engaged in private nursing for a number of years.
She had been a resident of this city for the past 47 years having been
with the state department for a 22 year period. Her illness caused her
to retire from active duty about five years ago. Survivng are two brothers,
Alvah Simmons, Kenmore, NY and Wyman with whom Miss Simmons resided. Also
surviving are several nieces and cousins. |
