Newspaper Article: A Trout Run resident was killed last night and three others were injured when the convertible in which they were riding crashed into a utility pole and then upset along the highway. Killed was Glen William Fladd, 21, son of Ernest Fladd. State police said young Fladd was the driver of the car. His death was the fifth Lycoming County death, the fourth on rural roads, since Jan. 1. Injured were Pauline Ramsey, 16 and her sister, Patsy, 13, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Freel Ramsey of Trout Run, and Jack Phillips, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Phillips, also of Trout Run. Mr. Fladd suffered a fractured skull and was dead on arrival at the Williamsport hospital. State policemen Alexander Kaczmarczyk and Andrew Mazak, along with Dr. Clarence R. Martin, Lycoming county coroner, said they will continue their investigation before deciding whether an inquest would be held. The accident occurred on Route 14, about one mile north of Trout Run, about 9:45 o'clock. Police said Mr. Fladd was driving north on Route 14 and the car ran off the highway into a pole, then skidded about 50 feet. Young Philips told police that the car was forced off the highway by a southbound car. After the accident, he said he attempted to halt another car, but was forced to run into a field rather than be struck by the other northbound vehicle. Most seriously injured was Pauline Ramsey, who is suffering from two deep lacerations of the scalp, abrasions of the face and hands and back injuries. She also has a possible skull fracture. Her sister, Patsy, also has lacerations of the scalp, abrasions of the body and a possible back injury. Phillips is suffering possible head injuries. The three were treated at Williamsport hospital and admitted for further observation and treatment. According to state police, young Fladd was driving on a learner's permit. The injured were brought to the Williamsport hospital in the Trout Run and Bohartz ambulances. Police said parts of the 1936 model car were strewn over a wide area. The demolished car was valued at $300. Fladd was born in Trout Run. Last December he received his discharge from the Army after four years service. In addition to his father, he is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Waugh, Catherine Marie, Freda and Linda Lou, all of Trout Run, and four brothers, Irvin Dale and Richard Lee, trout Run; George Francis, with the Army in Georgia, and Ernest Francis, Jr. , with the Army in Japan. Services will be Friday at 2 pm in the Trout Run Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Trout Run cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Thursday and at the church after 1 pm Friday. |
