Newspaper Article: Samuel E Covert, former county commissioner, died of a heart attack at his home, 2359 Riverside Drive, South Williamsport at 8:15 o'clock yesterday morning. Death occurred suddenly as he was preparing to drive his automobile out of the garage. Mr. Covert, whose term as commissioner ended two months ago had been in poor health during recent weeks and suffered a slight heart attack yesterday. He was 74 years old. He went to the garage yesterday morning intending to drive to a Williamsport barber shop. He had opened the garage doors and gotten into his machine before the fatal attack. Mrs. Covert noticing that he did not drive promptly from the garage, investigated and found him unconscious at the wheel. She telephoned for physicians but he had died before their arrival. Mr. Covert had a picturesque and successful career in Lycoming County. He was a "lumber jack" in the days of the old log boom and later conducted a sand and gravel business from which he had retired before his campaign for county commissioner. In 1932, he sought election to the commission, was defeated in the Republican primary and campaigned at the general election with a one vote Liberal Party nomination. He lost again, but was subsequently appointed to the full term to fill the vacancy created by the death of Sheriff Eugene B. Bardo, who died 24 hours after being elected as a Republican. Last fall, Mr. Covert sought re-election but was defeated in the primary. He served for 9 years as a school director and 6 years as a councilman in DuBoistown, before becoming a commissioner. Mr. Covert was a member of Lodge No 106 F and A.M. and the Williamsport consistory of Amazon Lodge No 662, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and LeLolde Commandery of the Knights of Malta.
