ELMIRA AND CORNING DIRECTORY: CONTAINING THE NAMES OF THE CITIZENS, A MAP; THE CENSUS; A COMPENDIUM OF THE GOVERNMENT, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS, AND HORSEHEADS BUSINESS DIRECTORY 1874-5 "Tis not in mortals to command success, But we’ll do more, Sempronius, we’ll deserve it." Compiled and Published by BOYD COUSINS: ANDREW BOYD W. HARRY BOYD HALL BROTHERS, BOOKSELLERS AND STATIONERS, 313 East Water St., Elmira. |
Entered according to Act of Congress,
in the year 1874, by A. & W. H. BOYD, in the office of the Librarian
of Congress, at Washington, D. C.
PRELIMINARY EGOTISM.
In view of two Directories being issued this year for Elmira, we deem it not inappropriate to say a few words concerning them. The name of BOYD has been connected with Elmira Directories dating back to 1859 (fifteen years). We believe that our Directories have always been gotten up as complete and handsome as any in the country; we believe that they have given as good satisfaction as a peculiar book of this kind can give; we believe that we have given to each one of our publications the same anxious care, brain work, personal thought and taxation, that any business man can use at the head of his establishment in which he takes pleasure and pride. Our experience in the complicated details of Directory making is of twenty years. WE KNOW WE CAN MAKE A DIRECTORY. WE KNOW we can do it infinitely better than one unfamiliar with the work, or who may have issued one, the great features which is claimed for it being its historical sketch. That does not belong to the art of Directory making. We think if we have issued 150 DIFFERENT DIRECTORIES, we can do it a little quicker, a little better, a little more satisfactorily than some one who has issued ONE, and therefore worried over ONLY 149 FEWER than we have.
We desire to say nothing personal or offensive to any one who may wish to issue an opposition Directory – a fair field and a fair fight is all we want. The horse with the best wind and bottom holds out the longest. We think we have both, and, therefore, can hold out; and we shall continue to publish the Elmira Directory, no matter who may attempt the same thing, so long as we receive such patronage as we have heretofore. But in one particular we have NOT HAD A FAIR FIELD or chance – the numbering has been in the hands of the other party, and has been withheld from the houses so that we might not obtain them, and our men have been wasting much time hunting for a block here, and a block there, that had been numbered; of course these numbers were just wherever the opposition choose to place them, in order to make a show of numbering, and to quiet the many calls of the public that the thing should be put through, and save them annoyance and confusion. The merchants saw the deception, and sympathised with us, and if the other party has lost $1,000, as it claims in one of the newspapers to have done, it will serve to remind them of the old adage, not quite worn out, that honesty is the best policy. Our men have been kept canvassing about EIGHT WEEKS, to do that which, under ordinary circumstances, could have been done in less than half that time, and the book been ready to deliver in two weeks thereafter.
We design always in our books to add such outside towns as will bring trade to the city. We design also to add to and improve our books, so that nothing shall be wanting to conduce to their usefulness. Our next issue will contain much that will be new and valuable over anything yet given.
Thanking our patrons for their liberal support and uniformly warm interest in our success, and for the extreme courtesy shown ourselves and canvassers,
We remain, respectfully, THE PUBLISHERS.
Newspaper Notices of Boyds’ last Directory – 1872.
From the Elmira Advertiser, July, 1872.
We can find no fault with it. It will WELL arranged, WELL put together, handy, and of sufficient size to make Elmirians think their city is of some account in a Directory way. What adds much to the value of the work is, that it contains Corning and Horseheads Business Directory, and the names of Chemung County Farmers. The Boyd Brothers have done well by us in this work, and THEY DESERVE NOT ONLY THE WELL WISHES BUT THE PATRONAGE OF OUR PUBLIC.
From the Gazette, July, 1872.
* * * * It is a very handsomely printed book, and by all odds the handsomest Directory of the city ever gotten out. Its compilation and publication evinces the work of experienced hands of men who make Directory work a business, and know just how to do it. The work is the largest of the kind yet published in Elmira, the list of names being largely increased by addition to population, and the care and thoroughness displayed by the canvassers. There are many points of excellent in this interesting and valuable work which especially commend it to the public favor.
The Business Houses of the city are conveniently classified, while the contents embrace banks, Chemung County Government, Chemung County Farmers, Churches of the City, City Government, Schools, Fire Department, Government of the State and of the United States, Horseheads Business Directory, Incorporated Companies, Masonic Societies, Odd Fellows’ Societies, Miscellaneous Societies, Newspapers, &c., &c. The records of citizens is VERY FULL AND CORRECT, so far as we can judge by a rapid review. The Boyds’ Directory contains a large amount of ADVERTISING FROM OUR BEST AND MOST ENTERPRISING BUSINESS HOUSES, and the announcements of these reliable firms are all handsomely and attractively shown up.
The Messrs. Andrew and W. Harry Boyd are not only
gentlemen of business honor and reliability, but are DIRECTORY MAKERS WITHOUT
A SUPERIOR. THEY HAVE GIVEN ELMIRA THE HANDSOMEST, MOST CORRECT AND VALUABLE
COMPENDIUM OF HERSELF YET PUBLISHED.
