Nelda COOK Holton, who was Town of Southport Historian for many years,
died in Wellsboro PA 05 MAR 2003. She is shown above at her retirement

HOLTON
Nelda C. Southport Historian Age 76, formerly of Sebring Ave., Pine City,
NY, diedd on March 6, 2003 at the Green Home in Wellsboro,
PA, where she most recently resided. She was born June 7, 1926 in
Rutland Township, PA, the daughter of Charles H. and Ruby (Hoag) Cook.
Nelda was preceded in death by her father, Charles in 1959; mother,
Ruby in 1965; sister, Fern Cook in 1919. She is survived by her loving
sons and daughters-in-law, Brett and Lori Holton of Elmira, NY; Kevin
and Molly Holton of Wellsboro, PA; beloved grandchildren, Benjamin and
Audrey Holton; Victoria Holton; sister and brother-in-law, Ina and Darwin
Neal of Mansfield, PA; brother, Carlyle Cook of Horseheads, NY; along with
several nieces and nephews. Nelda was the Town Historian for the
Town of Southport from 1968 to 2000. From 1982 to 1998, she wrote
articles for the Horseheads paper, "The Chemung Valley Reporter."
She was also a member of the Chemung County Historical Society and wrote
many articles for their journals. She had a great love for history
throughout her life. Nelda was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United
Methodist Church, a former member of the Chemung County Chapter of D.A.R.,
and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #323, Big Flats Chapter.
In 1989, she retired from the Broadway Animal Hospital after several years
of faithful and dedicated service. Family and friends are invited to call
at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY, on
Sunday, March 9, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. Calling hours will also be
held on Monday, March 10, 2003, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Pennsylvania
Ave. United Methodist Church, 1238 Pennsylvania Ave., Pine City, NY 14871.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Her pastor and friend, the
Reverend William Valet, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Jobs
Corner Cemetery, Jobs Corner, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
in Nelda's name may be directed to the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist
Church Memorial Fund or to the Salvation Army, 414 Lake St., Elmira, NY
