ALLEN Frank Wilson
of Alpine, CA, Age 88, died on July 31, 2008 at his home in Alpine. He was born in Millerton, PA on November 28, 1919 to John and Eunice Allen. He was raised in Millerton and graduated from Millerton High School. He had worked for Ward LaFrance as a Machinist building fire engines prior to his induction into the Navy. He served during WWII as an Aviation Painter. Following his military service, Frank chose funeral service as his lifelong career. He moved to California in 1945 and lived in the San Diego and North County area for 49 years. He had also spent 14 years in the Sacramento area. He graduated from Los Angeles College of Mortuary Science in 1948. He then convinced his younger brother Bob to move to California and join him in funeral service. In February 1964, the two brothers opened Allen Brothers Mortuary in Vista. Besides being a co-founder and partner in Allen Brothers Mortuary, Frank was very active in the Vista community. He served as the first President of the Vista High Twelve, was a member of the American Legion, Vista Elk's Lodge, Vista Lion's Club, Vista Masonic Lodge, and the Al Bahr Shrine where he enjoyed being a part of the "Tin Lizzies." He was also a co-founder of Vista National Bank along with his brother and several other prominent Vistans. He retired from funeral service in 1981. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Wilbur Allen; and three brothers, John Jr., Charles, and Louis. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris of Alpine; son, James B. Allen of Sacramento; brother, C. Robert Allen of Vista; sister, Eunice Cothron of Alpine; sisters-in-law, Jean Allen of Livermore, CA and Beverly Allen of Vista; grandsons, Christopher and Jeffrey Allen, both of Sacramento; great-granddaughter, Cynthia of Murrieta, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation and services are pending at Allen Brothers Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. Burial with Military Honors will take place at Riverside National Cemetery following services. ALLEN    James Roy Allen.  On the evening of Sunday, July 27, 2008, James Roy Allen of Canton, Pa., died quietly at Bradford County Manor. He was 88 years of age.  Born at his family's home on North Center Street in Canton on April 20, 1920, he was the son of Roy M. and Edith (Shepard) Allen.  After graduating from Canton High School Jim helped out at the family store as well as serving as a projectionist at the Rialto Theater.  He entered the U.S. Army during the Second World War and was stationed on Oahu. During this time Jim became interested in what would later be one of his favorite hobbies, photography.  After the war Jim returned to Canton, where he courted Bette Shaffer. They were united marriage in November 1951. Together they raised a son and four daughters. Jim and Bette continued to operate the family store for many years. He had many fond memories of how, after the new high school had been built right across the street, the students would gather at his soda fountain during lunch and after school. He was also well-known as a television repairman, and fixed not only his own set, but also those brought in for repairs at the former Porter Electric Co.  Eventually Jim became manager of the Canton Borough Authority, and was involved with many related associations, such as The American Water Works Association, the Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Association and the Pennsylvania One Call Board, receiving the Sahli Award for more than 20 years of service in the municipal authorities. Jim was also involved in many civic activities, including the Cub Scouts, where he served as Cubmaster; the Civil Air Patrol; Civil Defense; The Parent Teachers Association; and the Canton Ambulance Corps, where he served as a driver.  He had been a member of the Wheel Inn Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in Canada.  Jim was a man of faith, and a very active member of the Canton Ecumenical Parish, and served on the board of trustees for as long as his health would permit. He and Bette were two of the most familiar faces to greet folks each Sunday. Like the Levites of ancient Jerusalem, Jim along with Bette, could be found almost every day of the week tending to some task, great or small, that needed to be done in the House of the Lord. He was a man devoted to God, his wife and family, and his absence will be felt for years to come.  Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bette, at the Bradford County Manor; son, James R. (and Pam) Allen Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters, Terry (and Richard) Spencer of Plainville, Conn., Kellie Allen (and Roger Wilcox) of Canton, Penny Allen (and Steve Confortini) of Plainville, and Melissa (and David) Ardinger of Chambersburg, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Shaffer.  A celebration of Jim's life will be scheduled at a later date.  Professional services have been entrusted to Morse and Kleese Funeral Home Inc., 40 N. ALLEN Richard D.
Age 83, of South St., Ithaca, NY, died on Thursday, December 25, 2008, at Cayuga Medical Center, Ithaca, NY. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Ruth Conkright Allen; daughters, Jeanne Fernandez of Arizona and Wendy Caples of Florida; son, Bob Allen of Cortland, NY; sisters, Dorothy Krause of Florida, Barbara Kelley of Florida, Joyce Wilson of Nevada and Carol Mason of Ohio, several grandchildren, stepchildren and nieces and nephews. Mr. Allen served in the US Navy during WWII and retired from Con-Rail, Elmira, NY. A Memorial service for Mr. Allen will be held at a date and time to be announced later in the spring. ARNOLD William A.
Beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008. Bill was born on July 12, 1920 in Elmira, NY. He graduated from Elmira Southside High School in 1938. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, June; parents, Walter and Gertrude Arnold; brother, Ted; and sisters, June and Norma. He is survived by his five children, Michael and Dotti Arnold, Vestal, NY, Marsha and John Gana, Little Meadows, Pa., Thomas and Debra Arnold, Owego, NY, David and Beth Arnold, Johnson City, NY, and Joseph Arnold and Sunday, Apalachin, NY. He is also survived by grandsons, Matthew, Justin, Nathan, and Joshua Arnold; and sister, Avis Clark and her husband, Bob; special nephews and nieces, Tedd and Carol, Brenda, Donna, Stu and Lynn; brothers-in-law, Gene Adams and Ward Adams; and numerous friends and neighbors, including crew members from the 455th Bomb Group. He attended the 50th reunion at Langley Field, VA in 1993. Bill will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his great story telling of his youthful endeavors and his friendly demeanor to everyone he met. Bill was a member of St. Margaret Mary's church in Apalachin, NY. One of his most notable accomplishments was as a US Army Air Corp B-24 bomber pilot in WWII, where he received a Presidential Citation, Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and Oak Leaf Clusters. He received a medal of valor for completing 50 combat missions in June 1944, and continued to serve in the military until November 1945, when he was given an honorable discharge. He graduated from Northrup Aeronautical Institute in California in 1953 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was employed as a Mechanical Engineer at Modern Design and IBM Endicott, where he received numerous awards and patents. Bill retired from IBM in 1982, after many years of service. After his retirement, Bill became involved in renewable energy, installing solar panels and building windmills. Bill was also a member of AMVETS flying club at Tri-Cities airport during the 1960s. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 13th at 1:30 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary's church in Apalachin, NY. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the church. Burial to immediately follow at Riverside Cemetery on Marshland Rd., Apalachin. BAER Rudolph W.
Age 97 formerly of Horseheads, NY died on Wednesday August 13, 2008 as the result of a fall at home. Rudy was born December 23, 1910 in Millvale, PA the son of the late Harry G. and Bertha Nagel Baer. He studied engineering and played football at Penn State University, after which he moved to the Horseheads area in the early 1930's. Rudy married his wife Genevieve Marie Ball Baer on January 12, 1936 and celebrated 68 years of marriage until her death on September 3, 2004. He was also pre-deceased by his brothers George Baer and Harry Baer as well as his sister Ruth Masters. Rudy was a veteran of WW II, serving his country as an Officer in the U.S. Army overseas. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Horseheads where he also served as Lay-Leader. Rudy was an active Mason for over 70 years and was a member and Past Master of Horseheads Old Oak Lodge # 364 F. & A.M., Past District Deputy, member of The Cashmere Grotto, Corning Consistory, Kalurah Temple, Grand Lodge, Royal Arch, and Shriners Club. He was very dedicated to his community and served on The Horseheads School Board, was a founder of The Horseheads Youth Bureau, The Zim Center and The Horseheads Historical Society. Mr. Baer also served as Supervisor for The Town of Horseheads for many years. He was a member of The Horseheads Rotary Club and Horseheads Lions Club, and the Bentley-Trumble American Legion Post # 442 of Horseheads. Mr. Baer owned and operated Rudy Baer's Corner in Hanover Square in Horseheads for almost two decades. Prior to opening Rudy Baer's Corner he was the manager of the Epco Food Service in Elmira Heights. Rudy is survived by his loving and devoted daughter Marcie A. Baer of Gambrills, MD; his nieces: Connie Baer Mann, Linnell Masters Jones, Joan Burton Scanlin, Laura Ball and their families; nephew: Arthur Brown and family. RAYMOND S. BAHR age 91, a lifetime resident of Cherry Township, Dushore, Pa., died on Nov. 28, 2005, at his home.  He was born on Oct. 16, 1914, in Cherry Township a son of the late Oliver H. and Mary Shrimp Bahr.  Mr. Bahr is a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II. On May 7, 1977, he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia M. Bahr.  Prior to his retirement in 1980, he was employed by Endicott Johnson Shoe Company, giving them 32 years of service.  On Oct. 18, 1980, he married the former Betty Wildrick Bahr.  He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Dushore; and was a member of the Loyalsock Post No. 996, American Legion of Dushore.  Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, gardening and beekeeping.  Surviving is his wife Betty Bahr, at home; three children, Charles and Sandy Bahr, of Dushore, Pa., Louise and Elwood Stackhouse, of Benton, Pa. and Lester Bahr, of Allentown, Pa.; a brother, Alfred Bahr, of Dushore, Pa.; a granddaughter, Jacklyn Bahr; and several nieces, and nephews.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Carl G. Bahr in 2003.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter Street, Dushore, Pa., with the Rev. Robert W. Brown, his pastor, officiating.  Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery Full military honors will be accorded by the Dushore American Legion Post No. 996.  Friends and family are invited to call on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McHenry Funeral Home in Dushore. BYRNSIDE Junior A.
Age 80, of Dundee, NY, died Monday, October 6, 2008, in the comfort of his son's home in the Town of Tyrone. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, October 9, at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, where an American Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 10, at the funeral home, with Rev. Lucinda O´Leary officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow in Union Cemetery, Tyrone, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee American Legion Bradley-Jessop Post 660, 10 Spring St., Dundee, 14837. Junior was born June 21, 1928 in Scott Depot, West Virginia, the son of the late Lonny and Grace Wheeler Byrnside. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, and made it his career. He served as a Military Police Officer for over 24 years active duty; his career spanning from World War II, through Korea, and finally Vietnam. His final tour being in Germany, he was honorably discharged in 1969. He retired as a Security Police Officer at the Romulus Army Depot in 1988. On July 9, 1955 in Edgewood, Maryland, he married the former Joan M. Manning, who was also serving in the U.S. Army. She died on January 26, 1999. Mr. Byrnside was a member and Past Commander of both the Dundee American Legion Bradley-Jessop Post #660, and the Yates County American Legion Post; he was a member of the Dundee V.F.W. Goodrich-Smith Post #8649, and the A.A.R.P. He was very proud to have been a member of S.H.A.P.E. Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe pistol team; having won many matches with his favorite .45 caliber handgun. He is survived by his son, James A. (Julie) Byrnside, with whom he was making his home; a daughter, Lisa (Jeff Morehouse) Buckley of Bradford, NY; five grandchildren, Bobby Paquette, Scotty Paquette, Derrick (Deanna) LaBar, Justin Buckley, and Haley Buckley; four great-grandchildren, Kayden and Shawn LaBar, Drake Paquette, and Jacob Buckley; and numerous nieces and nephews. CARACCIOLO George J.
Age 86, of Galeton, PA, died on Sunday, August 31, 2008, at his home. Born September 15, 1921 in Galeton, PA, he was a son of the late Pete and Daisy (Close) Caracciolo. He was a graduate of Galeton High School. Mr. Caracciolo was a veteran, having served with the United States Navy in World War II. He then worked and retired from Dresser Rand in Wellsboro. George was a Parishioner of St. Bibiana's Catholic Church in Galeton. He was a life member of the Galeton Moose and VFW and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are a daughter, Andrea "Annie" Caracciolo, Galeton; a brother, Vincent C. (Gladys) Caracciolo, Wilmington, DE; a sister, Angeline C. (William) Dietrich, Pittsburgh, PA; and three nieces and one nephew. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by a brother, Anthony Caracciolo; a sister, Catherine Benaquist; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Benaquist. CARPENTER Robert G.
A lifelong resident of Odessa - April 2, 1925 - December 2, 2008, is survived by his wife of 62 years, Althea C. Carpenter; son, Steven R. (Jerry Arrasmith) of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Gail E. (Monica Powers) of Odessa and Mary S. (David R.) Wolfe of Montour Falls. Bob was a longtime member of the Odessa United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 676, Masonic Lodge, Odessa Lions Club and Southern Tier Library System. He was a former Trustee and Mayor of Odessa and was instrumental in the chartering of the Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library. Bob was a licensed insurance agent for 50 years and owned Carpenter Insurance Agency in Odessa. Bob served his country as a Flight Officer in the Army Air Corps during WWII and as a Master Sgt. during the Korean Conflict. Graveside services will be held in the spring. CARTER - Mark T. Carter Sr., beloved husband, father, and friend to all, came to rest on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family.  Mark was active all his life, never forgetting to teach everyone about all the beauty in life. Always available to have a laugh, his good sense of humor and quick wit will always be remembered.  Mark was born in Montrose on May 28, 1923, son of the late Jay and Angie (Clapper) Carter and was a lifelong resident of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Mark was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.  In his early years he worked at Bendix and the Liquor Control Board. Later he worked with the Department of Properties and Supplies for more than 35 years, and was building inspector for Northeast Bradford High School.  He was past president of Laceyville Business Association and past commander of the American Legion. He built many homes in Northeast Pennsylvania along with many businesses, but his true passion in life was farming with his son, Mark.  Mark's wife, Frances, has been at his side for more than 45 years. He is survived by his wife and children Jay (Sheila), Jeff (Carol), Dennis (Mary Beth), Mary Lee, Joel (Emily), Teresa (John), Patricia and Mark Jr. (Mayme); 27 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sisters Luna Maurer and Freda Harmon; his sister-in-law, Doris Carter; a brother, George; and many nieces and nephews. Mark was predeceased by his parents; brothers Clawson, Harry and Boyce; and sisters Grace Rea and husband Phil, Fran Johnson, Shirley Rea and Lee Ann Carter.  Family and friends are invited to call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at the Gerald W. Vickery Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 110 W. Main St., Troy, Pa. Immediately following, at 3 p.m., a funeral service to honor Mark's life will be held at the funeral home with the Rev. Kirby Herman officiating. Interment will follow the service in Hickok Cemetery with military rites given by the Troy Veterans Honor Guard. CRAWFORD James W.
86, entered into eternal rest at his winter residence at High Point Community, Brooksville, Florida, Thursday, October 23, 2008. Jim was born in Cameron Mills, NY, January 3, 1922 and was the son of William and Isabella Bastian Crawford. Jim lived most of his life in Cameron Mills, was a graduate of Addison High School and attended Alfred University for two years before joining the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Asian and Pacific Theatres during World War II. After his Honorable Discharge he joined the family business, "Crawford's Store", where he worked until his retirement. After retirement he resided in Painted Post, NY during the summer months and Brooksville, Florida (High Point Community) winters. Jim was active in public service, he served as Supervisor of the Town of Rathbone for 28 years, the Steuben County Board of Supervisors for 20 years, was a Director of Community National Bank from 1972 to 1992, was President of Town Line Cemetery, and was for 13 years Chairman of Steuben County Democratic Committee. He was a member and Past Master of Cameron Mills Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, a 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member Consistory of Corning, Williams-Greengrass Post American Legion of Addison, and the Cameron Mills United Methodist Church. After retirement he was a member of the High Point Golf Club for 16 years. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy, of 55 years; daughters, Jane Crawford of Baltimore, MD and Patricia (Philippe) Moisa of McLean, VA; son, William (Tricia) Crawford of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, and Michelle Cilip, Alexander and Lea Moisa, James Cameron Crawford, and Kendall Crawford; one brother, Russell (Elizabeth) Crawford of Lutz, FL; and three nieces and six nephews. Jim was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Frank and Helen Willis. The family wishes to thank everyone for all the friendship that has been extended to them from their Florida and New York residences. It has been very overwhelming and heart warming to know so many people care. Jim had been sick for a long time, but went peacefully for which we are thankful. At this time the family wants to thank our wonderful pastor, Robert Tompkins and his wife, Susan. The many prayers, hospital and home visits were appreciated. We also want to thank the visitation Pastor at Mariner United Methodist Church, Eugene Setchel for the home and hospital visits in Florida. DARROW –FLORENCE ‘JANETTE’ DARROW DORAN, 83, formerly of Bethlehem, WV died October 19, 2007 in Hillsview Personal Care Home, Claysville, PA.  Born on October 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Marvin and Irene Whitehead Darrow.  She was a former member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Wheeling and an Army Veteran of the Women’s Army Corps in World War II.  Surviving are sons, Roger E. Doran, LaGrange, KY; Donald C. Doran, Kaiserslauten, Germany and Walter L. Doran, Glendale, WVA; brother, Paul Darrow, Towanda; sisters, Ellen Gumbert, Monroeville, PA, Vivian Kie, Troy and Julia Beach, Troy; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel E. Doran in 1990 and sister, Norma Rubert.  Funeral services were held October 22 from the McCoy-Altmeyer Funeral Home, Wheeling.  Interment was in Parkview Memorial Gardens, Wheeling.  Memorial contributions may be made to the House of the Carpenter, 200 S. LEON WORTH DIEFFENBACH age 81 of Dushore died on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at his home on Dutch Mountain, Colley Township, Sullivan
County.  Leo was born July 5, 1921 at home in Colley Township son of the late Worth J. and Lydia Bowman Dieffenbach.  He attended school in Lopez and
graduated from the Dushore High School a member of the class of 1939.  He then graduated from Lehigh University with a BS in business administration in
1943.  After college he served with the U.S. Army during World War II.  He served with Patton’s 3rd Army in North Africa and also participated in the battles
of Normandy, Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.  After the war Leo began working as a self-employed lumberman.  He operated
mills on Dutch Mountain and later in Nordmont.  He was engaged in the lumber industry his entire life.  He married the former Elizabeth G. Foley of Dushore on
Aug. 21, 1952.  Betty predeceased him on May 28, 1993.  Leo was an avid sportsman and was awarded the Triple Trophy in hunting.  He also was a loving
grandfather and enjoyed being with his grandchildren and helping them with their homework and especially math.  He also encouraged them in their music
education.  He also wrote poems and some prose.  In retirement he enjoyed fishing and hunting and he also belonged to the McCann Hunting Club in Quebec,

DUNBAR Harvey L.
We honor the long and joyous life of Harvey L. Dunbar, 91, of Horseheads, NY, who died Thursday, December 18, 2008. Harvey was born March 11, 1917, married his beloved wife, Lenora (who predeceased him in 2005) in 1943, and had three cherished children, Lee (Linda) Dunbar of Perry, GA, Beth (John) Bruns, Bradenton, FL, and Diane K. Brown, New York, NY. Other family members include his sister, June (widow of Rho) Hollenbeck, also of Horseheads; brother-in-law, Dr. L. Wilson (Arlene) Kilgore, and widower of Harvey's deceased sister, Ursula; brother-in-law, Durwood (Dorothy) Hotter of Elmira; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Torres and their children, Trevor, Derek, and Eliza, Michael (Jodi) Dunbar and their children, Meagan, Ryan, Elizabeth, and Mia, Todd Bruns and Jay Dunbar; in addition to many nieces and nephews. Harvey, an active and longtime resident of Horseheads, retired in 1973 while president of the Hanover Square - based Southern Oil CO. of New York, Inc., owners of Rotary gas stations, served as a Horseheads Village Trustee, and Chemung County Legislator. He served as an officer in the US Army, both stateside and in France, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #442, F&AM Lodge #364, and the Corning Consistory (32nd degree) Shriner-Kahurah Temple. In lieu of flowers, Harvey's wish was to have donations made to the building fund of First United Methodist Church, 1034 West Broad St., Horseheads, NY; or the charity of one's choice. DUNCAN Arthur W.
Formerly of Big Flats, died on Monday afternoon, November 24, 2008 at his Spencer, NY home in the care of his loving family at the age of 87. Art was born on August 25, 1921 in Gloucester, MA, son of James and Marion Clark Duncan. He married Vivian Scudder on April 3, 1954 in Greensburg, IN. They moved to Big Flats where Art was employed by A&P Foods as a chemist for many years until his retirement. He was a WWII Navy veteran who served from 1942 - 1946 on the U.S.S. LST 325, as a Pharmacists Mate 2nd Class and was honorably discharged. Art was involved in many community activities, including the Big Flats Rotary Club. Art enjoyed the outdoors and taking road trips with his family. He would greet you with a warm smile, a funny laugh, and piercing blue eyes. Everyone he would meet was a friend and someone he wanted to get to know. Surviving is his loving wife and companion of 54 years, Vivian Scudder Duncan, Spencer; their daughter, Karen (Harry) Carlsen, Spencer; a sister, Maryline (Charles) Dickman, Gloucester, MA. In addition to his parents, Art was predeceased by his cherished son, Scott A. Duncan; and is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Elmira, on Saturday, November 29, 2008, between the hours of 1 – 3 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Janet Ernisse officiating. ELLIOTT Edward C.
"Papa", Age 94, of Horseheads, NY, died on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Elcor Health Services. He was born on January 7, 1914 in Latrop, PA to the late Colson and Lula (Tarr) Elliott. Edward was predeceased by his wife Marcia Elliott, daughter, Deborah Shaw and granddaughter, Kami Shaw. Survivors include his son, Dale (Sheryl) Elliott of Horseheads; daughter, Pamela Livermore of GA; brother, Dave Elliott of AZ; grandchildren, Raymond and Michelle; four great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews. Edward served our country in the US Army during WWII, where he landed on Omaha Beach with the 56th Signal Corp. There will be no prior calling hours. FAULKNER Robert P. Sr.  Robert P. Faulkner, Sr., 67, of 559 West High Street, Painted Post, N. Y. died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1989, at the V. A. Medical Center in Bath, N. Y.  Born Feb. 19, 1922, in Elkland, he was the son of Perry and Ethel Morseman Faulkner.  Employed as a supervisor in the Research and Development Division of Corning, Inc., he retired in 1980, with 49 years of service.  An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Corning VFW and past commander of Indian Village VFW Memorial Post #5992.  Dec. 13, 1940, he married Marion Deats in Baltimore, Maryland.  Surviving besides his wife, are a son and daughter-in law, Scott and Denise Faulkner of Painted Post, N. Y.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Richard Spiess of Elmira, N. Y., Marlene and Eugene Wentling of Olean, N. Y., Marcia and Louis Smith of Wellsville, N. Y. and Michelle and Charles Cody of Tempe, Arizona; daughters. Lisa Faulkner of Painted Post, N. Y. and Tara Faulkner of Mansfield, mother Ethel of Corning, N. Y.; brother, William of Elmira, N. Y.; three sisters, Wanda Willow and Hazel Walters, both of Corning, N. Y., and Alberta Currin of Savona, N. Y.; a step-sister, Judy McKinney; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Services were held Friday, Sept. 15, at Carpenter’s Funeral Home in Corning, N. Y.  The Rev. Jerry Griffin officiated.  Committal and burial was made with full military honors in Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post, N. Y.

GALBRAITH Donald J.  Donald J. Galbraith, 78, of RD 1, Huntington died Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1989 at his resident.  Born Dec. 29, 1910, in Smithfield Township, Huntington County, he was the son of the late George W. and Loretta Robinson Galbraith.  He was a member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, a life member of VFW #1754 American Legion Post #24 and Disabled Vets of Altoona.  A sergeant in the 317th Army Infantry, he served in northern France during World War II and earned a Purple Heart.  He was an avid sportsman and noted local gunsmith.  Sept. 24, 1942, he married Nellie Rudolph who survives him.  Also surviving are a son, Donald Paul of Wellsboro; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Janice) Hooper of Ligonier; a sister, Mrs. Phoebe Grafius of Dimondale, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  Services were held Friday, Sept. 15, at John B. Brown Funeral Home in Huntington.  The Rev. James L. Blair and the Rev. James L. Blair and the Rev. Delbert (Skip) Fields officiated.  Burial was made in White Church Cemetery, Huntington County.

Of Elmira, NY - 89 years, formerly of 27 West Wind Road, Horseheads, NY and 119 Renwick Lane, Horseheads, NY, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital following an extended illness. He was born December 26, 1919 in Corning, NY, the son of the late John J. Grady, Sr. and Margaret L. Sullivan Grady. Bob had been a resident of Corning and Horseheads, graduating from Corning St. Patrick's Catholic School and Corning Free Academy. He was a Veteran of the United States Airborne 82nd Division, serving as Captain during World War II in France and Germany and had been a member of the battalion, fighting the Battle of the Bulge (1943-46). Following his Military Service, he received his Degree in Chemistry from Notre Dame University (1950). Bob was employed as a Chemical Engineer for Corning Inc. from 1950 until his retirement in 1982. He was a past member of St. Patrick's Church, Corning, NY and relocated to the Big Flats area in 1964 and became a member of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, NY; past member of the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071; and a life member of the Horseheads Lodge of Elks #2297. He also was a life member of the Albany Post #1, Albany, NY and a past member of the Corning Knights of Columbus. Bob enjoyed relaxing at his cottage on Keuka Lake; people, friendships, and helping others were a joy for him. Surviving: his cousins, Kathy Viscusi of Syracuse, NY, Patricia Kacprzynski of Victor, NY, Judy Grady of Albany, NY, and Laurie Brady of Mooresville, NC; beloved friends, Hila and Henry Corp and family of Horseheads, NY, and Margo Fermer of Rochester, NY. GRUZLESKI - Floyd Thomas Gruzleski, 91, died peacefully on November 1st, 2008 at Altercare Home in Hartville, Ohio. He was born March 26, 1917 in Blossburg, Pa. His parents were Adam and Julia Gruzlewski and he was the youngest of 11 children, all others predeceased. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Lottie (Svarny) Gruzleski; son, Thomas and daughter-in-law, Nancy (Wychules) Gruzleski; grandchildren, Jason T. Gruzleski (and wife, Adina), Audra Trillana (and husband, Emmanuel), Laura LaRiviere (and husband, Michael); great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Jonah, and Daphne Trillana, Amanda and David LaRiviere; and many nieces and nephews. Floyd lived most of his life in Johnson City, N.Y., where he graduated from high school. He served as a Sergeant and gunnery instructor in the U.S. Marines during WWII and also saw duty on Guam, Iwo Jima, and Chichi Jima. He was a semi-professional baseball player, an avid hunter, fisherman, and conservationist, and was a supervisor at Endicott-Johnson Corp. until retirement. Floyd was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Binghamton.  Funeral Services will be held at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home, Inc., 150 Main St., Johnson City, Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Vestal Hills Memorial Park. Age 87, of State Route 228, Alpine, NY, died on Wednesday, November 5, 2008. Mr. Havens is survived by his grandchildren, Clay Havens (Amy Teeter), Stacey Havens and Kristi Allen (Chris); great-grandchildren, Cassie F. Allen and Abigail M. Havens; and brother, Charles (Bud) Havens. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Cooley Havens; son, Charles Havens; and brother, Howard (Tub) Havens. Wes was a WWII Veteran and was a member of the Odessa American Legion Post #676. He owned and operated his own business, Havens Sales & Services, along with his wife, Ruth. They also owned and operated Havens Trailer Park and Cool-Lea Camp, Alpine, NY. One of Wes's passions was to fly his Cessna plane over Little Lake. Wes was a lifetime member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge, both of Watkins Glen, NY. He was also a member of the Montour Moose Lodge, Montour Falls, NY. Age 77 of Horseheads, NY died on Tuesday November 18, 2008. He was born on April 27, 1931 in Bradford, PA the son of the late Mahlon and Angie Herman Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a Veteran of WWII serving his country with the U.S. Army. He was retired from the Firestone Company in Worcester, MA where he worked for many years. WALTER JOHNSON, 81, Orwell, Ohio formerly of Crawford County, died June 29, 2002 at UHHS Geauga Regional Hospital, Chardon, OH.  Born in Conneaut Township March 18, 1921, a son of A. L. and Marie Olson Johnson, he married Marylou Garbutt March 15, 1968.  He was a graduate of Linesville High School, was a World War II Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy Seabees.  He worked as a tool and die maker for 40 years.  He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7842 of Linesville.  He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and country and western music and was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.  Survivors in addition to his wife include a stepson, Ivan E. Wilber, Jr., Rock Creek, OH; a stepdaughter, Linda K. Age 80, of Wellsboro, PA, died July 22, 2008 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. He was the husband of Elinor Payne Kantz, whom he married October 23, 1954. Boyer was born August 14, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of the late John Boyer and Marion Kirkpatrick Kantz. Boyer attended high school in Freeburg and at VMI, and graduated from Penn State University in 1951 with a BS in Forestry. He was owner/operator of Boyer Kantz Associates, Forestry Consulting and Land Surveying, for 48 years, retiring in November of 2007. Boyer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, Coudersport Consistory, Society of American Foresters, Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, and Charleston Township Municipal Authority, where he served as chairman for 36 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Elinor; daughter, Adrienne Kantz and husband, Kipling Goh of Canandaigua, NY; son, John M. Kantz and wife, Kathryn of NY and NC; sister, Deborah Kantz Anderson and husband, John of Wellsboro; grandchildren, Katherine, Derek and Seth Goh, and Lena M. Kantz. FREDERICK AREY KELLOGG, 83 a native of Towanda died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at the Ft. Walton Beach (Florida) Medical Center following a month-long bout with cancer.  Fred was a graduate of Towanda High School where he was a member of the varsity basketball team.  After service in World War II he returned to teach at Towanda High and coach the basketball and football teams.  He was a 50-year resident of Valparaiso, Fla. and had recently moved to the Westwood Retirement Resort in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.  Mr. Kellogg is survived by daughters, Jeannine Kellogg Nordan and husband, Bob of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Priscilla Kellogg Callinan and husband, Mike of Flagstaff, Ariz.; Jane Hulme Pentz, also a Towanda native, his beloved companion of the past 13 years; three grandchildren, Justin Frederick Nordan of Rocklin, Calif., Adam Michael Callinan and Erin Leigh Callinan, both of Flagstaff, Ariz. and granddaughter, Caleigh Jeannine Nordan of Rocklin, Calif.  He is preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Doris Gardner Kellogg and brothers, Harry and Paul Kellogg.  Mr. Kellogg retired at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. in 1986 concluding a distinguished 31-year civil service career.  He served for many years as Eglin’s Chief of Morale, Welfare and Recreation.  He was a highly decorated World War II veteran having earned the Navy Cross for courageous and heroic actions as a Marine Corps platoon leader on the beaches of Iwo Jima.  He also served as a member of the occupation forces in Japan following the cessation of hostilities.  He was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State Teacher’s College, Pa., with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Recreation.  Fred served as Towanda’s city recreation director.  The Kellogg family will receive visitors during a visitation at the Heritage Gardens Funeral Home in Niceville, Florida on Monday, Sept. 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Services for Mr. Kellogg will be held at the Heritage Gardens Funeral Home Chapel in Niceville on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.  –Towanda Daily Review

KIES Harlow J.
Age 82, died on November 5, 2007. He was born and raised in Elmira, New York on 354 West 4th Street. He retired from the United Postal Service and from the United States Air Force. He was a veteran of three wars. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Kies; sons, Bruce Kies and Kenneth Kies; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. THOMAS CHARLES KING SR., 78, of Myersburg, Wysox RR 2 died Friday, June 10, 2005 at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.  Born Sept. 11, 1926, in Towanda, he was the son of the late John D. King and Bessie Harbst King.  Thomas attended the Towanda Schools.  On Dec. 7, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and later served the Company D, 32nd Infantry in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre during World War II.  He received his honorable discharge from the Army on Nov. 18, 1946, and following his return home after completing his military service was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad.  On Sept. 3, 1951, Thomas married the former Barbara Wilson at the First Presbyterian Church in Towanda.  Thomas was later employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 38 years until his retirement in February of 1989.  He was a member of the Wysox Presbyterian Church, Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, an VFW Post 6824, Rome.  Thomas enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, caring for his fruit trees and spending time fishing with his grandsons.  Surviving are his wife, Barbara Wilson King, at home; two sons, Thomas C. King Jr. and his wife, Joanne King, of Rome Township and Mark S. King and his special friend, Deborah Kuntz, of Troy RR 3; four grandsons, Tavis, Brett, Bryant, and Caleb King; a brother, George King and his wife, Anna King, of Ulster; five sisters, Marge Mansfield of Georgia, Frances "Pete" Elliott of Athens, Rhea Johnston of Towanda, Dixie Cabucci and her husband, John Cabucci, of Towanda, and Velma King of Towanda; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and Lydia, and by six brothers, Gabriel, John Ray, Benjamin, William "Bud," Edwin and Monte.  A memorial service will be held Friday, June 17, at 1 p.m. at the Wysox Presbyterian Church with the Rev. KRIVANEK - OSTER, Ann Krivanek
died on November 2, 2007 at the age of 81. She was born in New York City and they moved to Lincklain, NY, then finished school at Watkins Glen, NY. She was a daughter of Frank and Mary Krivanek. She married Raymond Oster while they were serving in Hawaii in WWII. She had recently moved to Fairfield Glade, TN from Palm Harbor, FL. Two sons, Scott (deceased) and Keith and Monica Oster of Fairfield Glades, TN; a brother, Charles and Anita Krivanek of Horseheads, NY; and a sister, Ed and Emma Krivanek Collins of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Kristina Oster and Micheal Lotis of Helena, MT, Nicolas and Ashley Oster, both of Tarpon Springs, FL, and Kortney Oster of Atlanta, GA. Walter J. (Jim) Kwasnik died November 14, 2008 at Lourdes Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Josephine and Frank Kwasnik. Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Vining Kwasnik, Kirkwood, NY; his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Jody Kwasnik; grandsons, Andrew and Luke, all of Charlotte, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Glenn "Dick" Winslow, Horseheads, NY; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Karl and Patricia Vining, Bluffton, SC; cousin, Charles and Flossie Moffe, Elmira, NY; several nieces and nephews. He was an Air Force Veteran of WWII, and a member of the American Legion and Elks BPOE #70. Jim owned a commercial sign business and taught art classes for IBM. He was an avid golfer and a devoted fan of the Mets and Giants. Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, Binghamton, NY. LAMB Lewis Dean
Age 83 of Lowman, NY, died on Monday December 1, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Lamb was a Veteran of WW II serving his country with the US Army. He married his wife, Wanda M. Wheeler Lamb, on June 16, 1946 and they recently celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary on June 16, 2008. Lewis worked for Dura-Built Inc. and retired after 41 years of dedicated service. Lewis had been a volunteer fireman with The Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Dept. for many years. Lewis loved his family and friends and treasured the time he spent with them. He retired from Texaco Oil Company in Tarrytown, NY, where he worked his whole career. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII. McGILL James W.
Age 83, of Elmira, died Thursday, September 4, 2008 at the Bath VA Nursing Health Care Unit. Born on July 2, 1925, in Elmira, a leader of leaders, an American WWII hero, and patriot, James was the son of the late Mary C. and James W. McGill, Sr. After graduating from Elmira Free Academy, James served in the 86th Army Infantry Division, during WWII, from September 1943 to April 1946. He was one of a select few who served in both the European and Asiatic-Pacific Theatres. James was the recipient of numerous medals, including the Purple Heart. Upon his separation from the military, James met the love of his life, Muriel Irish, whom he married in 1948 at St. Patrick's Church. They were married for 50 years before her passing in January 1999 at the age of 70. James attended St. Bonaventure University receiving both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Education degrees. He worked for over 35 years for both the Horseheads and Elmira City School Districts as a history teacher, then a guidance counselor. James also taught classes at Elmira College. A believer in continuing education James took various post-graduate courses at Cornell University, Syracuse University, and also the University of Buffalo, amassing over 120 plus credit hours in various disciplines. A man of high accomplishment and action, he loved sports, especially golf. James was also a lifetime Yankee fan. A devout Catholic, James ardently supported St. Patrick's Church, volunteering with school and church activities. He is survived by his 5 sons, James, Jr., of St. Pete Beach, FL, Timothy R. of Pittsford, NY, William E. of Ithaca, Gregory G., of Scottsdale, AZ, and Joseph C., of College Station, TX; 6 grandchildren; and sister Jeanie Kerstetter of Naples, FL. MURRAY James F., Jr.
Age 85, a lifelong resident of Bath, NY died January 2, 2009, at the Bath Veterans Administration surrounded by family and friends. Jim was born September 18, 1923 to James Ferdinand and Mary (Curran) Murray in Bath. Jim left high school and enlisted in the Army, serving as the company commander's messenger in the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment in the Italian campaign. After being injured on Mount Belvedere and a lengthy rehabilitation, Jim returned home and graduated from Haverling Central School. Jim was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Jim and Esther Mary Brady were married September 10, 1949, at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Seneca Falls, NY. In 1984, Jim retired from the Village of Bath Police Department, having served as a dispatcher since 1961 where he became known as "the voice of the southern tier". Jim was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Johanna, Margaret and Elizabeth Murray; Esther Mary, his wife of 50 years; and daughter, Esther Kathleen. Jim is survived by his children, James E. Murray, Bath, Mary Jo and Rob Yates, Avoca, NY, Patrick T. NEW Stephen Francis
Age 93, of Bristol, CT, died quietly at his home on Friday, November 28, 2008. He was the husband of Dorothy Florence (Corey) New. He was born on February 13, 1915, in Elmira, New York, to the late James and Katherine (Trice) New. He grew up in Elmira and, after graduating from Elmira Free Academy, he became employed at the Elmira Post Office where he served as a Letter Carrier and postal supervisor until his retirement in 1973. During his Postal tenure, he served our country in the United States Army during WWII, where he spent a tour in both Germany and France. He organized and monitored the Postal Bowling League, Elmira's "fast-pitch" Softball League, The Letter Carrier's March for Muscular Dystrophy each Thanksgiving Day, and was President of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees for over many years. His "can-do" attitude made him visible in politics, the Post Office, church and neighborhood charities. He and his wife relocated to Bristol, CT in 2003. He spent his time educating another generation of grandchildren to New York Yankee's baseball history, word games, singing and gardening. He was always challenging the limits of the mind, and he spent many years polishing his Irish skills of storytelling. We'll miss you! He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Florence Corey New; daughters, Patricia Bina and her husband Robert of Houston, Texas, Michele Studzinski and her husband James of Sterling, Virginia, and Robin Vena and her husband Anthony of Bristol, CT; and grandchildren, Russell Robinson, of Melbourne, Florida, Stefanie Maurer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kandace Gilligan and her husband Benjamin of Washington, DC, Patrick Vena and Devin Vena of Bristol, CT. He has maintained a special relationship with his beloved nephew, James Topping of Arlington, VA, who was for the duration of his life the "son he never had." That relationship was nurtured until the day Steve died. Surviving great-grandchildren are Austin and Houston Robinson of Melbourne, Florida. He was predeceased by his cherished granddaughter, Kimberly Studzinski; and five siblings, James New, Thelma New Wisner, Eleanor New Topping, and John T. New, and Jane Machewske. Age 86 of Horseheads, NY died on Sunday September 14, 2008 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. Edward was born on April 26, 1922 in Southerinton, CT the son of the late Vincent and Josephine Novakowski. Mr. Novakowski married his wife Polly R. Jones Novakowski on April 25, 1942 and they recently celebrated their 66th Wedding Anniversary. He was a Veteran of WWII serving his country with the U.S. Army Air Force. Edward was a retired custodian for the Central Islip Hospital in Islip, L.I., NY and South Fork High School in Stewart, Florida. He was pre-deceased by his son James Novakowski in July 2001; his daughter Donna Waters in October 2000 and 7 brothers. Mr. Novakowski is survived by his wife Polly R. PARFREY   Donald (Don) F. Parfrey, 79, of Waverly, died Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Robert Packer Hospital following an extended illness.  Don was born May 11, 1929 in S. Waverly, the son of the late Fred and Amelia Dickman Parfrey. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Ingersoll Rand. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing cards and listening to music. In better health he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of Skiff-Bauer Post No. 1536 Sayre V.F.W and Athens American Legion Post No. 246. Don was a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  He was predeceased by his wife Joan Parfrey in 2000. PINKSTON Marvin O., Sr.
Of Denver, died at his home on Sunday, September 28, 2008. Born in Corning, NY on November 14, 1921, he served in the 10th Mtn. Division, 85th Regiment, and took part in the Allied Victory in Northern Italy in WWII. Survived by his three children, Melissa Diven Williams, Marvin Olcott Pinkston, Jr., Marianne Fell Pinkston; and his two grandsons, Benjamin Rhys Williams and Owen Douglas Williams. Preceded in death by his parents, Natalie Olcott Pinkston and Dr. James Conyers Pinkston; and his brother, James Conyers Pinkston III. Marvin was loved for his quick wit, humor and kindness. Wilfred H. Roach of Spring Hill, Florida and Keuka Lake, New York, died peacefully at home in Florida with family members present on December 19, 2008. He was born on December 1, 1926 in Jamestown, New York. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he graduated from Alfred University in 1951, and accepted an engineering position with Radio Corp of America in Marion, Indiana, where he met and married Marcia McGreevy - the great love of his life. Together they moved to Horseheads, New York where he held several different management positions with Westinghouse Electric Corp. He was the Division Engineering Manager for many years before his retirement in 1988. Predeceased by his parents and infant daughter, Pamela; he is survived by Marcia, his wife of 54 years; children, Dave and Teri Roach of Hockessin, Delaware, with Kristen and Greg, Missy and Scott Merrill of Millport, New York, with Ashley, Lindsay and Megyan, Cindy and Mark Gianniny of Rochester, New York, with Jack and Danny, and Mark and Robin Roach of Honeoye Falls, New York, with Cooper and Coleman and sister, Barbara Dean of Phoenix, New York.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.  Published in the Star-Gazette on 1/3/2009

ROSSI Dominic S.
Age 85, of Fayetteville, NY, died October 29, 2008. Born and raised in Elmira, Dominic relocated to the Syracuse area in 1965. A veteran of World War II, he was a life member of the 84th Infantry Division Railsplitters Society. He graduated from Cornell University and the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry, as well as earning Graduate degrees from Elmira College and Syracuse University. He worked in various careers, notably as an educator and optometrist. Dominic was predeceased by his wife, Katherine Putnam Rossi, and their son, Nicholas. He is survived by six children, Adele, Christine, Michael, Martha, Sara, and Charles; two sisters, Frances D'Ambrosio and Anna Marie Milliken; a brother-in-law, Charles S. SHEEHE - KOJAK, Clara B. (Sheehe)
Age 92, died July 16, 2008 at her home on Anna Maria Island, FL. She was born in Elmira to the late Harry J. and Eunice (Barnes) Sheehe. She graduated from Elmira Free Academy and the Robert Packer Hospital Nursing School. During WWII, Clara served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in North Africa and Italy. She was very active in her church (St. Bernard's) and her community. She enjoyed travel, caring for her numerous dogs and cats over the years, cheering on the Chicago Cubs and her long residence on beautiful Anna Maria Island. Clara was predeceased by her husband, Bill Kojak in 1992. Survived by her two sons, Jimmy (Mary) and Andre; brother, Harry (Ethel) Sheehe; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. SLATER Jay W.
Of Endwell, died peacefully on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at the United Methodist Homes Hilltop Campus. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Virginia Mary Blank Slater; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Linda Slater of Denver; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Tom Williams of St. Croix; his daughter, Gloria Slater of Endwell; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Richard Seitz of Endwell; granddaughters, Gini Till, Sarah Slater and Julie Slater; grandsons, Michael Seitz and Justin Seitz; special sister-in-law, Erma Blank of Elmira; and many nieces and nephews. Jay was predeceased by his son, J. "Bill" Slater; and his siblings, Audrey Foxx, Richard Slater, Ruth Coon and Williams Slater. Jay was born in Horseheads, NY on December 15, 1919. He grew up in Watkins Glen, graduated from Alfred University, and became a captain and a pilot in the South Pacific in WWII, flying his P-51, the "Jinny M". He received commendations for his 4 years of service to his country. In 1948 he graduated from Clarkson College, and soon began his career as an electrical engineer and technical writer for IBM, where he worked for 35 years until his retirement in 1984. Jay dearly loved and guided and entertained his wife and 5 children with his music, his bird-watching, his hard work, his meticulous nature, his fondness for rich desserts and his adept and clever mind. He conducted extensive genealogical research for the family, he lived a religious and ethical life, he gave generously to organizations and individuals. We will miss him immensely. Funeral and interment services will be held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott. Rev. Roger Richards, Pastor of his church, will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the service time at 2:30 p.m. The family is grateful to the second floor staff at the James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home at Hilltop for their care and compassion during this difficult past year. WALTER (PAT) SMITH age 88 of Forksville, Elkland Township died at Towanda Memorial Hospital on Thursday, March 25, 2004.  He was born May 7, 1915 in Elkland Township, a son of Charles and Annie Laura Hatch Smith.  A decorated Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the United States, he attained the rank of Private First Class for which he received several medals.  After the war, he was employed at Burgess’ Sawmill, L & H Lumber and then retired from PennDOT several years ago.  Pat enjoyed spending time with his family and was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  His hobbies included fishing, hunting, farming, four-wheeling and spending time with his poodles, GeeGee and Gidget.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Midge) Smith on April 8, 2002.  Surviving are three sons: John (Kasey) Smith of New Albany, William Smith at home and fiancée Kathy Larrabee of New Albany, Edward Sides and Gail Holmes of Pottstown, Pa.; three daughters; Darlene MacNeal of Waverly, N.Y., Linda (Gary) Westbrook, Lockwood, N.Y., Susan Smith of Mount Joy, Pa.; grandchildren; Michael, Jen and Jyl MacNeal of Waverly, N.Y., Jason, Chad and Kristin Westbrook of Lockwood, N.Y. and Eddie Sides of Pottstown and by several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 29, 20044 at 3 p.m. in the Russell P. SOKIRA Charles B. "Ben"
Age 87 years, of 124 Dodge Avenue, died Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Founders Pavilion. He was born August 10, 1921 in Corning, NY, the son of Mary Kapral Sokira Petro and George Petro. A lifetime resident of Corning, attending Corning Free Academy, he was a Veteran of the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Marine Corps, serving during WWII. He was a member of the 780th squadron, 465 Bombardment Group. Ben received B-24 training and as Staff Sgt. and became an Aerial Gunner, flying 44 missions. During one of the missions his plane was hit by flak, disabling one of the engines, the crew was able to land the plane in Lwow, Poland and escaped the enemy with the help of the Polish underground, returning to Italy nine days later. Ben was awarded the following medals, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, Air Medal with 3 Br. Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Unit Badge. Ben and Beverly Cross were married September 27, 1947 in St. Mary's Church, Corning, NY. Following the war he returned to Corning, where he became employed with Corning Inc. In 1955 he established his own business "Charles Upholstery", which was located on Dodge Avenue in Corning. He retired from the business in 1990. Ben was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, a past member of the Corning Lodge of Elks #1071, a lifetime member of the Corning VFW post#524, the Disabled American Veterans. Ben had received his Black Belt in Karate. He enjoyed his woodworking, the outdoors and was an avid runner. Ben was a loving and caring family man, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his delight and he will truly be missed by all. Surviving his wife of 61 years, Beverly; daughter, Cathy (Charles) Hogan; sons, Michael Sokira and Vincent (Sally) Sokira, all of Corning, NY; grandchildren, Brian and Erin Hogan, Jason Sokira and Myia Sokira; great-grandchildren, Kerrigan, Joseph, Victoria, Caitlyn and Jacob Hogan and Abigail Copp; sisters, Ann Tubbs of Acworth, GA; sister, Mary Lucina (Helen) Sokira of Buffalo, NY, Mary (John) Keach and Margaret Petro, both of Painted Post, NY; also several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, John Sokira, George Sokira and Michael Sokira. Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St., Corning, NY, Tuesday, November 18, 2008, from 4-6 p.m. A Prayer Service will be offered at the Haughey Funeral Home, Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 9:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, November 19, 2008, 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY, followed by Committal Prayers, Full Military Rites and Entombment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning, NY. SPENCER Arlene R.
died on October 8, 2008, at Bethany Manor. Arlene was born on September 19, 1918, the daughter of Earl Sr. and Emma W. Spencer of Jackson Summit, PA. She was predeceased by her parents, sister, Alice and brother, Earl. Arlene is survived by Earl's wife, Margaret of Richardson, TX; brother, Ernest of Kapaa, Hawaii; four nephews, one niece, six grandnephews and four grandnieces. Arlene was a graduate of Mansfield State Teachers' College. She was a WWII Veteran, having served as a WAVE in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. She taught at Jackson Summit and Millerton Schools and then in the Elmira City School District where she taught at Parley Coburn, Hoffman and Hardy Schools. In keeping with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Rochester Medical School. A private memorial service for Arlene will be held at a later date. Arlene especially enjoyed her niece, Leilani Spencer with daughters, Anna and Julie, and special friends, Ruby Woodland and Corlyn Walluk. She will be remembered for her independent spirit, her sense of humor and her constant desire to help others. Arlene's family and friends are grateful for the kind and loving care she received from Bethany Manor's level three nursing staff. STEINHAUSER Robert W.
Canandaigua, Age 87, of Crimson King Dr., died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Living Center North in Geneva. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Clemons) Steinhauser; six children, Howard (Anna) Steinhauser of Chino Valley, AZ, Lynne (Theron) Andrews of Elmira, Terry (Donna) Steinhauser of Groveport, OH, Laurie (David) Hayes of Ovid, James Travis of Hyannis, MA, Lucinda Steinhauser of Canandaigua; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. Mr. Steinhauser was born in Elmira and was a graduate of Southside High School. He attended Elmira College. He was a US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served in the Phillipines. Mr. Steinhauser retired in 1990 from Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. after many years as a salesman. He enjoyed music and spending time with his family. There will be no calling hours. STEWART Ralph E.
Age 85, of Waverly, NY, died on Sunday, November 9, 2008, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. He was born in Sayre on May 24, 1923. Ralph graduated from Athens Area High School in 1941 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps in December of the same year. He was stationed in the South Pacific and fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator in highway construction. He was a Master Mechanic on several major highway projects throughout New York State and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He retired in 1988. He was predeceased by his first wife, Laura Bentley, in 1985. Survivors include his wife, Violet (Garrison); daughters, Sheila (Michael) Williams of Rockwell, NC, Susan (James) Solomon of Pembroke Pines, FL, Stacy (Paul) Brodfuehrer of Albany, NY; son, Douglas of Waverly; stepdaughter, Beverly (Raymond) Anderson-Sears of Feasterville, PA; sister, Mary Horne of Hiawassee, GA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. A time of gathering with family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad St., Waverly, NY. The celebration of Ralph's life will be Thursday, November 13, 2008, at 9:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Waverly, NY. TERRY Marshall L.
91, of Pine City, NY, died July 4, 2008 at home. He is survived by his wife, Esther; daughters, Pat (Gary) Jezorski of Millerton, PA and Diana Terry of Elmira, NY; two grandsons, Mark and Jason Jezorski; and two great-grandsons, and nieces and nephews. Marshall served in World War II, receiving the Bronze Star for outstanding courage and devotion to duty. Throughout Marshall's life, he shared his musical talent with many. TRINDER Frank Henry
86, husband of Mildred Prior Trinder, died Sunday, August 3, 2008, at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY. Born in Reading, England, he was the son of the late George Henry and Alice Walker Trinder. Frank was a navigator in the US Army Corps during World War II and graduated from Babson College in 1948. He retired from Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY and relocated to Kentucky. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mildred; and three daughters, Alice (Kenneth) Johnson of Lexington, KY, Nancy (Jonathan) Warner of Burke, VA and Marie (Michael) McCarty of Reston, VA; a granddaughter, Katie (Corey) Fogle, Virginia Beach, VA; and a brother, Robert W. (Audrey) Trinder, Seneca, SC. There will be a private service on Friday, August 8, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Bluegrass; or the Alzheimer's Association. WISNESKI Stanley C.
Age 81, of Elmira Heights, died at his home, with his loving family by his side, on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Stan was born July 1, 1927, a son of Stanley C. and Anna Wolfe Wisneski. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his sister, Mary Barnard, and brother, John Wisneski. Stan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Norma Miller Wisneski; daughter and son-in-law, Julie A. and Garrett Conover of Erin, NY, with children, Nicole and Zackry; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas J. and Joelle Wisneski of Elmira, with sons, James, Matthew, and Eric; Daniel J. and Kathi Wisneski of Pine City, with daughters, Jessica (with husband Jesse) Perry, and Andrea Wisneski; great-grandchildren, Elise and Brooke Perry; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Stan was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII. He had a long career in the automotive service business. For 20 years he was the owner/operator of Stan's Garage in Elmira Heights until his retirement in 1987. Stan had a passion for woodworking and made countless pieces of furniture for his family and friends. In his younger days he enjoyed fishing. Stan was a long time communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church. WOOD - Warren G. Wood, 83, of Montrose, died in his home on October 31, 2008, surrounded by family and friends. Born May 6, 1925, in Athens, Pennsylvania, Warren was the son of Ambrose B. Wood and Margaret (Generous) Wood. Upon his return from service in WWII in 1946, he was graduated from Athens High School and in 1951 from Mansfield State Teacher's College. In 1947 Warren married childhood sweetheart Margaret L. Moore, and the couple celebrated 61 years of marriage in July 2008. Warren served in the 95th Med Gas Treatment Battalion in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. He was awarded three Bronze Stars. A member of the VFW Ayres-Stone Post, Warren formerly served as Commander-in-Chief. He also belonged to the American Legion. Warren began his teaching career of 35 years at Wells Graded School. He and his young family moved to Montrose when he was hired by MASD as a driver's education and Pennsylvania history teacher, retiring in 1985. A member of the East Bridgewater Church, Warren's civic and professional duties included coaching track and Little League. He was instrumental in forming the Central Conservation Club and the high school's wrestling and football programs. Warren served on the MASD school board, as a Republican Committeeman, as a Justice of the Peace, and as an Explorer Scoutmaster. He donated more than 10 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. An avid hunter, Warren bagged numerous deer, many of them with his 75-pound Bear bow that only he could draw. He enjoyed bass and ice fishing and moved more quickly and gracefully on figure skates than any bird might fly. Warren worked summers in construction, and his skills allowed him to remodel much of his century-old home. He took pride in his prolific garden and meticulous lawn. All of his grandchildren fondly remember riding in the cart behind Grandpa's lawn tractor. Warren is predeceased by his parents; brothers Ambrose II, "The Triplets," Walter, Carl, Ernest, Harold, Lawrence, and Leslie; and sisters Blanche, June, and Shirley. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, and their four children: Mary Jeannette (Mrs. Earl S., Jr.), John W. (wife Janice), Daniel C.L. (wife Kori), and Margaret E. (good friend John). His grandchildren are: Morgan, Patrick, Leah (Young), Tyler, and Victoria Kelly; Chad and Thomas Bush, and Shane Bush-Wood; Grace and Claire Wood; and Jacqueline, Christopher, and Sara Kelly; and great-grandchildren, Rileigh Kelly and Amari Young. He would remember his niece Helen and her husband Pete, along with Jonathan Winnans.  A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at East Bridgewater Community Church with Pastor Joel Surface officiating. Interment will be in the East Bridgewater Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit the family from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose, Pa. YOUNG - Theodore [Ted] L. Young, of Troy, PA, died unexpectedly Sunday, July 29, 2007, at Troy Community Hospital. He is survived by: his wife, Katherine Westlake Young; stepchildren, Katrina Westlake and Laura Wamsley of Troy; his former wife, Marianne Oliver of Coronado, CA; four daughters, Karen Vogler, Corning; Linda Young-Miller, Horseheads, Kathy Rose, San Diego, CA; and Sheila Young-Pell, Charlottesville, VA; seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Ted was a supervisor at Sylvania Electric for over 20 years, a building and grounds assistant for K-Mart, Sayre, and managed apartment complexes in both Sayre and Elmira. Born August 6, 1925, in Ebensburg, PA, he was the son of the late Otto and Gertrude Young. A graduate of Troy High School, Ted was a proud WWII Marine Corp veteran. Active in the community, he was a member of the Troy American Legion, Post 49, the Troy VFW, Post 8675, the Troy Lion’s Club, and the former Troy Drum and Bugle Corp. An avid outdoorsman, he was a founding member of the Troy rod and Gun Club and a founding and honorary member of the Armenia Mountain Ponderosa Club. Age 91, of Elmira, formerly of Watkins Glen, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the home of her son in Elmira. Clarabelle Hannan, 91 a long time resident of Watkins Glen died Wednesday September, 10, 2008.  Mrs. Hannan served with the Women's Army Corps during World War II where she met and married her husband, Thomas.  She returned to Watkins Glen where she opened and operated her own beauty salon.  In later years, she operated the Fifth Street Yarn Shop from her home.  She also provided personal seamstress services for the community.  Mrs. Hannan  is predeceased by her husband Thomas (1977).  She is survived by one sister, June Brownlee of Wilmington, IL.  She is survived by two sons: Michael and wife Barbara of Fayetteville, NC; Patrick and wife Luann of Elmira, NY; three daughters: Deena Erni and husband Keith of Alexandria, LA; Penny Rosenfield and husband Paul of San Clamente, CA; Maureen Palcos and husband Jim of Westlake, OH.  Nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.   Friends and family may call from 10:00am to 12 noon on Saturday September, 13, 2008 at Haughey-Wood Funeral Home, 119 Fifth Street, Watkins Glen, NY.  Her funeral service will immediately follow calling hours at 12 noon at the funeral home.
