ARGETSINGER Cameron Reynolds
87, Watkins Glen race founder and lawyer died peacefully, April 22, 2008, at home with his family. He leaves his beloved wife of 67 years, Jean, their nine children, fifteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He lived in the farmhouse near Burdett where his father was born in 1883, overlooking the family vineyard and Seneca Lake. The only child of Attorney J. Cameron and Louise Williams Argetsinger, he was born March 1, 1921 in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent his childhood summers with his grandparents in Schuyler County. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Army. In 1948 he conceived, organized, and drove in the races through the streets in what would become the world-famous Watkins Glen Grand Prix. He brought full international races here in 1958 and inaugurated the U.S. Grand Prix for Formula 1, which had a successful 20-year run on the Watkins Glen Circuit. He was subsequently the executive director of the Sports Car Club of America in the 1970s. A graduate of Cornell Law School, he practiced law in Schuyler County 48 years, serving for a time as president of the bar association. Retiring from the law in 2002, he became president of the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen until retiring for health reasons last year. He was a visionary who could make things happen. Despite his many professional successes, honors and recognitions, he always believed his family was his greatest accomplishment. He was close to his children, proud of the achievements of his grandchildren, and took great delight in his great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife Jean and great-grandchildren, he is survived by his children J.C. and Joan of Montour Falls, (and their children Amy, Liz and Cameron II); Louise and Thomas Kanaley of Rochester, (and children Tom, Michael and Jean); Michael and Lee of Chicago, Marya Smith of Elizabeth, Ill., (and children Arthur Cameron and Sarah); Margretta (Getchie) and Kevin Potter of New York City, Peter and Sjoukje of Sebring, FL and Watkins Glen, (and children Kimberley and J.C.); Rob and Elizabeth of Sunset Beach, CA (and daughters Jane and Carolyn); Sam and Joan Kinner of Burdett (and his children Bree, Beren and Will); Philip (Duke) of Phoenix, AZ, and Susann Gary Argetsinger of Burdett, and also by his brother-in-law Robert and wife Kay Sause of Poland, OH and sister-in-law Dr. Louise M. Sause of East Lansing, MI. A funeral mass will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2:00 PM at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur Street, Watkins Glen; the family will meet with friends afterward at the Racing Research Center, 610 S. Decatur Street. Burial will take place in the family plot at Hector Union Cemetery. ASKEY - Magistrate Judge William H. Askey, 88, of Williamsport, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at the Gatehouse Hospice. Magistrate Judge Askey and his wife, the former Betty Arlene Moore, celebrated their 65th anniversary July 3, 2007. Magistrate Judge Askey graduated from Williamsport High School, Bucknell University in 1941 with a Political Science degree and received his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law, in 1951. He was in private practice in Williamsport for 54 years. Magistrate Judge Askey was appointed part-time United States Commissioner from 1964 to 1971. After passage of the Federal Magistrates Act, he was appointed part-time United States Magistrate in 1971, a position Congress later renamed Magistrate Judge. He retired with over 43 years of service to the federal judiciary Dec. 31, 2007. Magistrate Judge Askey served with the US Army Air Corps during World War II from 1941 to 1946. He was honorably discharged as a Captain and later promoted to the rank of Major while on inactive status. Magistrate Judge Askey was a member of the board of directors of AAA North Penn since 1973, served as solicitor from 1973 to 1998 and as President from 1993 to 1995. He was Chairman of the Lycoming County Red Cross Blood Program 1953-1954, President of the Northeast Regional Red Cross Blood Program 1962-1968, President of the Williamsport Community Concert Assoc. 1962-1968 and had served on the Board of Directors of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross, Susquehanna Legal Services and the Appalachia Educational Laboratory. He was a former Trustee and Secretary of the YWCA and a former member of the board of directors and past President of the American Cancer Society. Magistrate Judge Askey was a member and former Vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church, a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Alpha Delta, a member of Lodge 106 F & AM since 1941, a member of the Williamsport Consistory, AASR since 1941, where he was a member of the Choir since 1952 and past presiding officer of the Williamsport Chapter Rose Croix. He was a member of the Ross Club, past president of the Lycoming Law Assoc., a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Assoc., the American Bar Assoc., the Federal Magistrate Judges Assoc., and an honorary member of the Federal Bar Assoc. Over his life he received numerous awards including, Phi Eta Sigma Honorary Freshman Scholastic Society, Bucknell University 1941; Young Man of the Year, Williamsport Junior Chamber of Commerce, 1954; Benjamin Rush Award of the Lycoming Medical Society, 1956; American Red Cross award of Dedicated Volunteer Service, 1973; Distinguished Service Award in 1978 and Volunteer Service Award in 1992, both from the American Cancer Society; Outstanding Service Award, Appalachia Educational Laboratory, 1985; Proclamation in 1992 of William H. Askey Day in the City of Williamsport; and the Lycoming Law Association Equal Access to Justice Award in 2003.  Born June 21, 1919 in Williamsport, he was the son of Charles F. and Marguerite Hartman Askey. Surviving besides his wife, are a daughter, Elizabeth P. and her husband Richard J. Tyler of Slingerlands, NY and a granddaughter, Olivia M. Tyler. A memorial service will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, Fourth and Mulberry Streets, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15. A private interment will be held in Wildwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. No visitation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the charity of the donor’s choice. BARNER - John R. Barner, 88, formerly of Fulmers Personal Care Home in Lock Haven, died Friday, May 2, 2008, in the Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport. Born May 3, 1919, in Limestone Twp., he was the son of Guy F. Barner and the former Myrtle Epler. His wife, the former Jeanne E. Laubach, preceded John in death February 25, 2003; they were united in marriage April 12, 1976. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel Co., after 40 years of service. During WW II, John served in the United States Army with the Company D 334th Engineers. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Mary L. Huling of Jersey Shore, 17 step grandchildren, several step great grandchildren and several step great great grandchildren, one brother, William Barner of Williamsport and one sister, Margaret J. Reading of Jersey Shore. He was preceded in death by three stepdaughters, Marlene H. Reiber, Janet M. Stroud, and Shirley P. Green, two sisters, Lois Karstetter and Marie Eck and one brother, Harry Barner. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Oval Cemetery. The Rev. BERG Edward J. (Judd), Sr. - 89, died peacefully on March 16, 2008 at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster, with his family by his side. He was predeceased in 2003 by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Williams Berg, and is survived by his three children, Gretchen K. Farnham and her husband, Henry, of West Barnstable, MA, Trudy Potter and her husband, John F., of Elmira, NY, Edward J. Berg, Jr. and his wife, Kate, of North Eastham, MA; five grandchildren, Robert A. Bazydlo, Jr. and his wife, Jenn Leinss, of San Francisco, CA, John P. Potter and his wife, Miranda, of Elmira, NY, Elizabeth C. Potter of Elmira, NY, Bryan D. Berg and his fiancee, Lauren Richardson of San Francisco, CA, Edward M. Berg of Burlington, VT; and one great-grandson, Jackson J. Potter of Elmira, NY. He was also predeceased by his mother and father, Eva Mary and Edward Joseph Berg; and his brothers, Edward Robert and Edward Daniel Berg. Born in New Hartford, NY on February 27, 1919, Mr. Berg graduated from New Hartford High School and attended Syracuse University. During World War II, he was a member of the US Navy Seabees 5th Battalion in the South Pacific. He also sang with the Navy band. For many years, he worked for E. Tudor Williams furniture store in Utica, NY. As a member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish, he was known for his volunteer work and his fine singing voice. After moving to Hyannis, MA in 1974, he worked for Hy-line until his retirement. He was a daily communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church and assisted his wife with First Communion classes as well as visiting the sick of the parish. Mr. Berg enjoyed furniture making, gardening, recording nature journals, attending Seabee reunions, summering on Pike Lake, Ontario, Canada, artwork, especially drawing treasure maps for his grandchildren as Capt. Spikebeard the pirate, being with his family and relaxing with a cold beer. At Epoch, he especially liked singing at the various musical events and, while his voice might not have been as rich as it once was, he remembered the words to all the songs. His family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Epoch for the loving care shown to their father during his residence there. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Burial will be private. In his memory, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. BOWER - John Antes Bower, 89, formerly of 2001 Memorial Ave., died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Sycamore Manor, where he had resided since October 2007. John’s wife, the former Mary E. Aeschliman Bower, died Jan. 30, 2005. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage. John and Mary were both veterans of World War II. He served with the Army Corp of Engineers and she was a Navy WAVE. John worked in the office of the former Raub Supply Company for 30 years until his retirement. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for over 55 years. Born in Hepburn Township, Nov. 4, 1918 he was the son of the late John F. and Anna Antes Bower. John was a direct descendant of Col. John Henry Antes, who served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. Surviving are sons, J. Thomas (Charlotte) and Richard D. (Carol), both of Carlisle, Paul V. (Judith) of Williamsport and Charles E. (Beth) of Pleasant Gap; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Sara E. Bower of Williamsport and Mary Anne (Robert) Golay of Downey, Cal.; brothers, Philip C. (Lillian) of Milton, Donald F. (Roberta) of Williamsport and Dale V. (Mary) of Montoursville. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha V. Bower. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave. with the Rev. BROWN - Daniel W. Brown, 84, of Owego, NY, died Friday, April 11, 2008. He was born in Laceyville, on April 21, 1923, son of D. Warren and Maude R. Brown. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Virginia; sister, Virginia; sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Robert Dugan. He is survived by his wife, Bessie of 63+ years; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisette and Thomas Keating of North Tonawanda, Julia and Joseph Monaco of Owego; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Linnea of Red Hook, NY; son, Stephen Brown of Florida and a brother, Herbert of Georgia. Also, his grandchildren, Bethany Monaco of Owego, Michael Keating of North Tonawanda, Virginia and Donald Bauch of North Tonawanda; great-grandchildren, Julia, Donald and Patrick Bauch, and a nephew, Eugene Dugan. Daniel was a veteran of WWII. He was a past Post Commander and life member of American Legion Post 401 in Owego and was past Commander of the Tioga County American Legion. BROWN - James G. Brown Sr., 87, formerly of Bridge St., died Friday, March 21, 2008 at Valley View Nursing Center. Jim and his wife, the former Joann A. Foust, were married 53 years, Aug. 7, 2007. Jim retired from Lycoming College and worked for the Merchant Marines and the CCC Camp during WW II. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation and enjoyed gardening and cooking. Born Aug. 1, 1920 in Moscow, PA, he was the son of Garfield J. and Maude Ellen DePew Brown. Surviving besides his wife are a son, James G. Jr. (Susan) of Erie; daughters, Ruth E. (Howard) Persun of Cogan Station, Mary A. (Robert) King of Williamsport and Katherine M. (Dave) Taylor of Muncy; and grandchildren, Howard Persun, Kimberly Pickert, Aaron and Andrew Burson Cameron and Morgan Taylor, Matthew and Lance Brown. BROWN Mathew, Age 83, of Elmira, NY, died at his home on Thursday, April 17, 2008. Mathew was born in Elmira, son of the late Raymond and Sadie (Masterson) Brown. Mathew served our country in the United States Marines during WWII in the South Pacific. He retired from NYSEG as a Chief Lineman, avid sportsman, dedicated son, husband and father. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Roberta Mae (Morse) Brown; daughter, Susan (special companion, Jim Harrington) Brown of Trappe, PA. Mathew was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Brown. CALLAHAN - Raymond “Ray” Callahan, 87, of 394 Seneca Road, North Hornell, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at McAuley Manor. He was the owner and operator of the Raymond Callahan Insurance Agency for 62 years and was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. today, April 10 at the Dagon Funeral Home, 38 Church St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11 at St. Ann’s Church. CASTELL - John W. Castell, Jr., 87, of 714 Antler Lane, Williamsport, died Friday, April 11, 2008, in the Gatehouse of Divine Providence Hospital. Born September 8, 1920 in Washington County, Kentucky, he was the son of John W. Sr., and Mary E. Clinton Castell.  John was an Army Veteran of World War II and a life member of Post 1, American Legion. He was employed as a painter with Palmer Industrial Coatings and the painters’ union for which he was business agent. John was president of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship and a past president and Melvin Jones Fellow with the Newberry Lions Club. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former JoAnne Molino; his son, John Joseph “JJ” Castell of Douglassville; and two grandchildren, Jason and Nichole Castell. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from Citychurch, 36 East Fourth Street, with Pastor Jerry Dutton officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday. CIHOWSKI - Edward J. Cihowski, age 87, of Forksville, Pa., went home with his Heavenly Father, on Thursday, April 17, 2008, a resident at Dar-Way Nursing Home in Estella, Pa. He was born on Nov. 16, 1920, in Rahway, N.J., a son of the late Henry and Mary (Karsen) Cihowski. He is a veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. On May 15, 1954, Edward married the former Anne Matlaga in Roselle Park, N.J. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Alcoa, giving 25 years of service. Mr. Cihowski has been a resident of Forksville since 1987, having relocated from Elizabeth, N.J. His memberships include the V.F.W. of New Albany, Big Rod & Gun Club; and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed shooting and competition target shooting, and enjoyed his time spent hunting. He especially found great fondness in his time spent with his family. He leaves surviving: his wife, Anne Cihowski, at home; two children, Mary Anne (Mark) Stefuro of Orwigsburg, Pa., Edward J. Cihowski, Jr. of Orwigsburg, Pa.; a sister, Bertha Wisniewski of Plainfield, N.J.; grandchildren, William Fernandez, Veronica (Albert) Barnes, Lisa (Chris) Matterson, John Lacaskey, Jr., Cindi Marie Vargas; four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. COOPER - James R. Cooper, 88, of 1610 Princeton Ave., much loved by his family and friends, died on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at The Gatehouse Hospice following a brief illness. His wife, the former Gladys I. Colyer died on Dec. 24, 1976. Jim was an Army Air Corp veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1, Williamsport and the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local 520. Jim retired from the former Pullman Power Co. as a welder after 24 years of service. Born Oct. 3, 1919 in Williamsport, he was the son of Robert F. and Mae A. Axeman Cooper. Surviving is a son, Robert R. (Catherine) of Youngsville, NC; daughter, RuthAnn (John F.) Clark of South Williamsport; grandchildren, Matthew Cooper of Raleigh, NC, Stephen Cooper of Rochester, NY, Kristen (Rocky) Lane of Duboistown and Karen Clark of South Williamsport; great grandchildren, Masen, Claire and Hayden James Lane all of Duboistown.  He was predeceased by a sister, Jane Miller. CRAWFORD - Wilbur M. Crawford, 88, formerly of 312 Hughes Road, Watsontown, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, where he resided since 2004. Born at the home of his parents in Muncy Valley on December 5, 1919, he was a son of the late George and Edna (Smith) Crawford. On July 21, 1956, he married his wife of 51 years, the former A. Marie Hughes at the Christ Lutheran Parsonage in Lancaster. For four years from 1938 to 1942 he worked at the former Watsontown Cabinet Co. until he joined the U. S. Army Air Force and served his country during World War II. Following his discharge he worked as a molder operator with Philco Ford in Watsontown for 35 years. When the company became Zenith Audio Division, he worked for 7 more years in the same position until the plant closed. At that time he went to work as a molder operator with Yorktowne Cabinetry in Mifflinburg for three years. Wilbur retired in 2001 from Burns Security, where he worked for ten years as a security guard at the former Grumman plant in Montgomery. In addition to his various employments, Wilbur also farmed most of his life. He was a woodworking enthusiast and enjoyed fishing and hunting, particularly with his grandchildren. He was a 50+ year member of the Watsontown Lodge 401 F&AM, and a member of the Williamsport Consistory and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 171, Milton. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen S. and Wayne Laubscher of Lock Haven and Lana M. and Richard Dworsak of Bloomsburg; one son, Edward W. Crawford of Avis and two grandchildren, Courtney and Cameron Crawford. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert and Clayton Crawford, and two sisters, Kathryn Reynolds and Dorothy Williams. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 4, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be the Rev. Bethany P. Wood, pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hughesville. DAWSON - Robert A. Dawson, age 80, of 135 Jamie Lane Montoursville died
March 25, 2008 at home. He was born August 31, 1927 in Williamsport the son of William and Anna Mae Holtzinger Dawson. Robert was employed by the former A&P for 12 yrs. and was employed by a commuter airline in California and resided in California for 29 years before retiring from the U.S. Postal Dept. in California in 1989. He was a World War II Army Veteran. Robert was a wonderful husband and friend. He was a good brother, uncle, brother-in-law and cousin. He enjoyed the outdoors, tennis, walking and hiking in state and national parks. He also enjoyed walks along the ocean. He enjoyed basketball, and always enjoyed watching March Madness. Robert was very artistic, he enjoyed painting and playing the harmonica. He is survived by his wife the former Joann Steppe. Robert and Joann celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary this past July 28, 2007. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard of Aguora Hills, Ca. and John of Canoga Park, Ca. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, Donald and Dale Dawson. Funeral services will be held at the Crouse Funeral Home, 133 East Third Street, Williamsport, on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to time of services at 11 a.m. The Rev. DePUMPO - Lester J. DePumpo, 88, of Dry Brook Road, Waverly, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 Elderwood Tioga Nursing Facility, Waverly. Born Aug. 24, 1919 in South Waverly, he was the son of the late John and Rose Mitchell DePumpo. Les was a graduate of Waverly High School, class of 1937. After high school he enlisted in the US Army and served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. While in the Army Les earned an Associates Degree, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1964. After his retirement Les moved back to the area and was employed by Don Merrill Motors and several other auto dealers in the Valley. Later he was self-employed as a janitorial supply distributor. Les was a member of the Blessed Trinity, St. James Church, Waverly, the V.F.W. Post No. 8104, Waverly, Lodge Roma Madre, Order Sons of Italy, No. 1342, Sayre, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge No. 1148, Sayre. He enjoyed raising Scottish Highland Beef cattle at home on Dry Brook Road. He is survived by: his wife, Raymonde M. Malbeuf Trudeau DePumpo at home; his children, L. John DePumpo and his wife Elaine DePumpo of Waverly, Ann Frank and her husband Wayne Frank of Rochester, N.Y., Lisa Ghostlaw and her husband Patrick Ghostlaw of Messina, N.Y., David DePumpo and his wife Ann DePumpo of Orchard Park, N.Y.; his sister, Josephine Humphrey of Waverly; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew DePumpo, and his sister, Helen DePumpo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Blessed Trinity St. James Church, Waverly, with the Rev. William Moorby as celebrant. Interment will be at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Waverly. FITCH Kenneth Whitney, Age 87 of Elmira, NY died peacefully at the home of his daughter and son-in-law on Wednesday March 26, 2008 after an extended illness. He was a Veteran of WWII serving his country with The U.S. Merchant Marines. Kenneth was a retired employee of Schiavone Bonomo Corporation in New Jersey. He was a Past President of The Salmangundi Club in New York City and a member of The Corning Rotary Club. Kenneth loved his family and friends and enjoyed playing cards. FOWLER - John W. Fowler, 84, long-time resident of Wellsboro, but recently of Hunlock Creek, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at his home. He was born Dec. 26, 1923 in Eldred, the son of the late Allen and Helen Ward Fowler, Sr. He was a retired furnace operator for Pittsburgh Corning Glass Manufacturing. He was a member of the Austin United Methodist Church, Austin. John enjoyed the outdoors, especially golfing and gardening. John was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Mona Fowler of Port Allegheny, Lydia McLeod of Turtlepoint, Debbie Spinler of Olean, N.Y., Sandra Ayers of Ulysses, Theresa and Terry Hughes of Hunlock Creek; brother, Allen Fowler, Jr. of Eldred; 10 grandchildren (two of whom he helped to raise), Renee Ayers of Johnson City, Tenn., Don Ayers of Wellsboro; and nine great grandchildren. FINK - James D. Fink, 86, of 111 Fink Road, Trout Run died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at his home. James was an Army veteran of World War II and flew cargo planes during the Berlin Air Lift. After WWII James was a pilot flying refueling planes. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Major serving from 1939 until 1961. James worked at the Fink’s Paint Store for over 20 years following his military career. James was a former member of the Lewis Township Planning Commission. He was a member of the Quiet Bird Men Association, Experimental Aircraft Association and enjoyed farming, woodworking and private piloting. Born Nov. 15, 1921 in Williamsport, he was the son of George H. and Mary M. Haist Fink. Surviving are sons, Michael C. (Teresa) Zuber of Binghamton, NY; Jerry D. (Janice), George R., James T., Geoffrey A. Fink all of Trout Run; daughter, Jeanine D. (Thomas) Bell of Williamsport; sister, JoAnn Thomas of Jupiter, FL; and five grandchildren. FORSTER - George S. Forster, 86, of 36 Riverview Manor, and formerly of Muncy and Montoursville, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at RiverWoods in Lewisburg. Born September 5, 1921, in White Deer Valley, he was a son of the late Fred and Myrtle (Pauling) Forster. His wife of 60 years, the former Helen S. Stover, died February 10, 2007. A U. S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he served two tours of duty in the South Pacific. He was proud to be a member of the U. S. Marine Corps League. George was employed by Bethlehem Steel, Highspire, for 29 years until retiring in 1982. Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Byron Brooks of Jersey Shore; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Helen Forster of Watsontown; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fetterman of Montgomery, Betty Forster of Lock Haven and Carolyn Forster of Williamsport; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Donald Forster, and one sister and brother-in-law, Ella Mae and Charles Young. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 28, at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be the Rev. Gunther Bernhardt, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Montgomery. GARDNER - Linn E. Gardner, 87, of 2001 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, died Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Gatehouse in Divine Providence Hospital. He was born February 3, 1921 in Williamsport, the son of Cleveland and Delilah Rosevear Gardner. Linn was a veteran of WW II having served in the United States Navy. He worked for the Sun Gazette for 28 years as a pressman, and retired from the Gannett Publishing Co. in Rochester, NY. He was a member of the Garrett Cochran American Legion Post # 1 in Williamsport; the Duboistown V.F.W. Post # 7863, The North American Hunting Club, was a lifetime member of the N.R.A., and was formerly a member of the STROPS Club. He was a Mason and a member of the Williamsport Consistory. He is survived by his daughter, Lynette G. (James) DiPaolo of Montoursville; seven grandchildren, Stephanie and Trevor Stackhouse, Nicole Campana, Angelo, Anthony, Vincent, and Mario DiPaolo, and a great grandson, Tristan Stackhouse. Linn was predeceased by his wife the former Myra M. Railey, and by a daughter, Linda Stackhouse. GAULIN - Charles A. Gaulin Jr., 97, of York, died Sunday, March 16, at Normandie Ridge. He was the husband of Mary (Dougherty) Gaulin, with whom he shared more than 71 years of marriage. Charles was born in Philadelphia on July 20, 1910, the son of Charles A. Gaulin Sr. and Mabel (Whiteman) Gaulin. Charles was a 1928 graduate of West Catholic Boys High School in Philadelphia. He served in the Navy in World War II aboard a ship in the South Pacific. For most of his working life he worked as a Safety Engineer, finishing his career as a Safety and Sanitation Director for Stroehmann Brothers Company in Williamsport. He was active in his church in Williamsport, serving as organizer and first President of the School Board for St. Ann’s School. In his retirement, he served as volunteer safety consultant to organizations for the disabled in the Williamsport area. Along with his wife, Charles is survived by a daughter, Mary Goss and her husband Richard; two grandsons, Richard L. Goss Jr. and his wife Amy, and Charles A. Goss and his fiancé Sherri Card. He was blessed with seven great grandchildren all of York. He has one surviving brother, Father Frederick J. Gaulin, C.M. of Germantown. He was the beloved “Uncle Charlie” to numerous nieces and nephews. He was especially close to three nephews, Robert Kline and wife Barbara, Richard Kline and wife Mary Jane, and Ralph Kline who predeceased him and Ralph’s wife Anne. He was predeceased by an infant son, Charles, and by a sister and two brothers. A visitation will be 9:30-10 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at St. Patrick Church, 231 S. Beaver St., York, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. with his brother, the Rev. Frederick J. Gaulin, C. M. officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery. The John W. HAHN - Calvin C. Hahn, 81, of 1365 Russell Ave. Williamsport, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at his home. Born September 17, 1926, in Karthaus, PA, he was a son of the late Howard J. and Amy E. Burfield Hahn. He was an Army Veteran of WWII. He retired from Bell telephone in 1983. Calvin was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Democratic Club, Harmonia Club, and the American Legion in Montoursville. He and his wife Shirley (Johnson) Hahn would have celebrated 19 years of marriage on May 1st. Surviving are two sons Dennis C. (Sandra) Hahn of Williamsport and David C. (Jamie) Hahn of Montoursville, a daughter Mary A. Hahn (James) Shuck of Huntington, nine grandchildren, one great granddaughter; three-step-children Kathy L. (Michael) Moran of Dallas, TX, Richard M. (Sandra) Born of Williamsport, and Holly R. (Scott Long) Born of Atlanta, GA, and five step grandchildren, a brother Keith Hahn, and two sisters Mary Lidgett and Vida McGoniga. He was preceded in death by a daughter Diane E. Hahn in 1981, a step-son Ellwood C. Born, and six siblings. HAMM - William Eugene Hamm, 82, of 1715 Bloomingrove Rd., died Monday, March 31, 2008 at home. His wife the former Emma J. Horn died August 27, 1993 following 46 years of marriage. He was born February 14, 1926 in South Williamsport and was the son of Robert J. and Clara M. Eiswerth Hamm. He was a 1944 graduate of South Williamsport High School. He served his country during WWII with the 343RC infantry 86th Division as a Blackhawk Warrior. He received the following, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal. William was a lathe operator for 26 years at Textron. He was the owner operator of West Branch Adjustable Awning Co., and a master carpenter apprentice under George M. Brewster & Son, Inc. William was a member Union Carpenter, UAW United Auto Workers Union, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post 844, and American Legion Post 104 Eugene Grafius. He had been active at the Church of St. Ann and the school, Bishop Neumann High School, Loyalsock Boosters, and was a founding member of Susquehanna Water Skiers Association. William was an avid fan of NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt. William had also enjoyed archery hunting. HARVEY - Alvin G. Harvey, 88, of Muncy, died at his home on Thursday, March 20, 2008. He was the husband of the late Betty J. Burkholder with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Alvin was born on December 7, 1919 in Williamsport, and was the son of the late Edward S. and Allegra I. Green Harvey. Alvin was an Army veteran who served his country during WW II. He was a member VFW Post 5859 of Williamsport and the American Legion Post 1 of Williamsport. Alvin retired in 1982 after 25 years at Avco as a Machinist. Prior to his employment at Avco, Alvin worked as a bricklayer for 10 years. He enjoyed needle pointing and was an avid reader. Alvin is survived by seven sons; Edward (Linda) of Trout Run, Richard W. (Terry) of Cogan Station, Daniel J. (Peggy) of Williamsport, Kenneth G. (a close friend Mary Tennis) of Cogan Station, Wilson F. (Candy) of Cogan Station, Robert E. (Ruth) of Williamsport, Byron D. of Center Valley, and by two daughters, Caroline E. (Paul) Yohe of Pennsdale, Patricia (Dale) Linn of Milton and by 18 grandchildren, 27, great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Alvin was predeceased by his wife, a son Glenn J. Harvey on March 12, 2008 and by two brothers. HENNE - Samuel L. Henne Sr., 82, of Valley Heights Drive, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, in the Williamsport Hospital. Born in Williamsport October 10, 1925, he was the son of LeRoy and Beatrice Babb Henne. Sam was a graduate of Williamsport High School, Class of 1943. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He retired from Litton Industries with 33 years of service. On January 28, 1950 he married the former Jean Lusk. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary this year. He was a member of the Balls Mills U.M. Church, the former Antlers Club and the Wheel Inn. He and Jean enjoyed traveling and going hunting and fishing together. Surviving, in addition to his wife is his son, Samuel L. Henne Jr. of city and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Henne was predeceased by a daughter, Karan Diane Henne in 1950 and five sisters and three brothers. A Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, in the Balls Mills United Methodist Church, 5941 Bloomingrove Road, Cogan Station, 17728 with the Rev. D. Gregory Lake officiating. HILL - Stanley W. Hill, 84, formerly of Hughesville, died February 20, 2008, at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York City following a brief illness. Born in Williamsport on May 2, 1923, he was the son of Roland and Mary (Whitmoyer) Hill. He was raised in Hughesville by his grandparents John Monroe and Ida (Carter) Hill and graduated from Hughesville High School in 1941. He is survived by his sister Helen B. Hill with whom he has shared a residence in New York following his military service in World War II. He was a rifleman with the 317th Infantry Regiment of the famed 80th Infantry Division from May 1944 to May 1946 and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the Ardennes when the 80th spearheaded Gen. Patton’s Third Army.  He was employed by the Sperry Gyroscope Corporation and later retired as a member of AFL-CIO Service Employees Union. A member of the American Legion. He enjoyed travel and sharing the cultural life of the city with his sister, Helen. He liked to read and kept up with the events in Lycoming County. He is also survived by a half sister, Joanne Shearer of Muncy, and half brothers, Marvin Hill of Linden and Ronald Hill of Williamsport; and many cousins of the Hill and Hall families who hold fond memories of him. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Hughesville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert E. Berger officiating. HOUSEKNECHT - Carl B. Houseknecht, 87, of Muncy, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Born November 8, 1920, in Moreland Township, he was a son of the late John and Julia Lowe Houseknecht. His wife of 47 years, the former Florence M. Derrick, preceded him in death on January 19, 1997. Carl was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 871st Airborne Engineers. He retired in 1982 from the International Union of Operating Engineers of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. Carl was a member of the Moreland Baptist Church for over 50 years. He was very active in the church and held various positions including Treasurer and Usher for many years. Carl was a past 7th degree member of the Canusarago Grange and a member of the Moreland Baptist Men’s Bowling League. He was an avid bowler and Phillies fan who also enjoyed hunting, collecting rocks and traveling with the Pennsylvania Ridge Runners. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Markle of Muncy; two grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer Rush; one great granddaughter, Mackenzie Markle; three step- grandsons; seven step- great grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Thelma Houseknecht and Phyllis (Wayde) Farnsworth both of Muncy; and several nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by five sisters, Martha Wallis, Frances Drick, Edith Bogart, Edna Shultz and Margaret Houseknecht; four brothers, Lester, Roy, Orlando and Ralph Houseknecht; and a son-in-law, Calvin Markle.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Moreland Baptist Church, 118 Moreland Baptist Rd., Muncy, with the Rev. HOUSEKNECHT - Harley C. Houseknecht, 84, of Hughesville, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Born February 9, 1924, in Hughesville, he was a son of the late Clayton M. and Carrie P. Myers Houseknecht. He and his wife, the former Janet R. Nixon, celebrated 60 years of marriage on February 12. Harley was a graduate of Hughesville High School Class of 1942. He was a WW II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy and saw action during the Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Harley retired in 1986 from the former Sprout-Waldron Company, Muncy, after having worked there for 40 years. Harley was of the Lutheran faith and a former member of the Roaring Run Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid stamp collector who also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, H. Stephen (Cathy) Houseknecht of Hughesville; a daughter, Debra R. (Steven) Temple of Muncy; a brother, Leon “Amos” Houseknecht of Pennsdale; and four grandchildren, Sean Stephen Houseknecht, Ryann L. Houseknecht, Carrie R. Temple and Shannon A. Temple. HRINYA - Thomas M. Hrinya, 82, of 376 Main St., South Williamsport, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Williamsport Home following a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Violet A. Williamson, observed their 60th wedding anniversary on August 23, 2007. Tom was a Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater and a member of the Church of the Ascension. He retired from Textron, enjoyed carpentry work and loved his family. Born February 19, 1926 in Brockway, he was the son of John and Mary Kostion Hrinya. JOHNSON - Bertram (BG) (Jerry) Johnson, 82, of 1510 Princeton Ave., died Friday, March 21, 2008 at Manor Care North. Jerry was predeceased by his wife, the former Meta Mae Salsgiver, Oct. 15, 1996. Jerry enlisted in the Army Air Corp during WW II and was stationed in England as a tail gunner in B 17’s. His bomb group 457 and his plane the Lucky Dog completed 35 missions in all. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh, went to college and became a loan officer. He came to Williamsport and had an office on South Market Street and in Newberry on West Fourth Street, the “Workers Loan.” He drove truck a short time, then worked for City Bus, retiring in 1992. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1954 and a dedicated usher, a Golden Eagle, the 40 et 8 Voiture and American Legion Post 1. Born May 4, 1925 in Coraopolis, he was the son of Bert Conrad and Pearle J. Coulter Johnson. There are no immediate survivors. KEMRER - Ralph W. Kemrer, 82, of 218 S. Washington St., Muncy, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, Muncy. Born April 26, 1925, in Milton, he was a son of the late Harvey and Pearl (Lynn) Kemrer. He and his wife of 60 years, the former Ruth E. Miller, were married July 17, 1947. A 1943 graduate of Milton High School, he was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the U.S.S. President Jackson. Ralph retired in 1971 after 20 years of employment with Sprout-Waldron (now Andritz) in Muncy. He was a member of the Edward Smith Post 3428 V.F.W., Muncy and the Glenn Sharrow Post 35 American Legion, Hughesville. In addition to his wife he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Sharon Kemrer of New Columbia; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert H. and Mary Kemrer of Watsontown; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elsie and Lynn Heberling of Muncy and Ethel Confer of South Avis. He was predeceased by two sons who died in infancy and two brothers, Richard Kemrer, who died in 1987, and Harvey Kemrer, who died in 1941 when he was a child. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at Harmony Cemetery, Milton, officiated by Pastor Rodney Gray of Calvary Baptist Church, Hummels Wharf. LACHAT - Albert C. Lachat, age 86, of 235 German Road, Lock Haven, Pa., died April 26, 2008, at the Lock Haven Hospital. He was born in Lock Haven, September 25, 1921, and was the son of the late Albert and Edna Herr Lachat. Albert was united in marriage, August 8, 1945, to Betty Simcox Lachat who survives.  He was a 1941 graduate of the Lock Haven High School and had served in the US Navy from November 1942 to November 1945 where he served as an Aviation Metalsmith Second Class. Albert had worked at Piper Aircraft for a short period of time. He had also worked at Clark Printing before opening his printing business in 1974, known as Lachat Printing, retiring March of 2000. Mr. Lachat was an active member of the Swissdale United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and held various positions in the church. He enjoyed traveling and gardening. Letter from France Seeks Information about Wyalusing Airman Killed in WWII - by David Keeler - 3/27/2008 Wyaluisng Rocket Wyalusing Mayor Joan Cashin contacted the Rocket-Courier this week regarding an unusual letter she received from France, seeking information about a World War II airman who died when his bomber was shot down over France. The letter was written by Roland Onimus of Bantzenheim, France, a village in northeastern France. Onimus’s letter requested information regarding how to contact relatives of Edward D. Larkin, a B-17 navigator who died when his bomber was shot down on Jan. 20, 1945 near the village of Hirtzfelden, France. Larkin, who was known by his local friends as “Ned,” was the first Wyalusing resident to die during World War II. He was actually shot down twice. The first time he managed to make his way back to his base in England and return to combat duty. Larkin’s family owned a shoe store in Wyalusing at the time of his death. Onimus noted in his letter that the deceased navigator’s mother, Alice Larkin, lived in Wyalusing. In closing, Onimus’s letter asked for information about contacting members of Larkin’s family. LESLIE - Herbert W. Leslie Devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and friend BRISTOL - Herbert W. Leslie, formerly of Tioga, N.Y. and Henrietta, went to rest peacefully on April 26, 2008 at the age of 82. He was predeceased by his grandson, Brandon Leslie. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jeanette; three children, Sandra (Tim) Cannon of Honeoye Falls and Kevin Leslie and Cheryl (Rodney) Siple, both of Bristol; grandchildren, Scott, Sarah, Kaleigh, Keegan and Terry; two great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends. Mr. Leslie was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He retired from the Eastman Kodak optical research program after 33 years of service. LOWERY - Mr. George J. Lowery, age 81, of 304 Main St., Northwood, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 7 a.m. at his residence. He was born Dec. 20, 1926 in Renovo, the son of George W. and Anna Strouse Lowery, and on May 13, 1950, in Lock Haven, he was married to Georgeanna Toot, who survives. Also surviving is a son, Craig A. (Brenda) of Tyrone; three grandchildren, Shaniah, Anthony and Elizabeth, all of Tyrone; and one brother, Francis I. (Vera) Lowery of Renovo. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was employed by PRR and later Conrail as a pipe fitter/welder in the Juniata Shops, retiring Nov. 30, 1988 after 45 years of service. LUKEHART - Donald L. Lukehart, 83, of Ocala, Fla., and formerly of Montoursville, died Thursday, April 24, 2008. Born June 17, 1924, he was the son of the late Wallace and Sarah Lukehart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie. A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne and served as a paratrooper.  He retired from Edwards Lakes to Sea Transit and Lakes to Sea Federal Credit Union. He is survived by his son, Larry Lukehart, Lexington, Ky., and two grandchildren, Mary Jo (Kurt) Westbrook, Cogan Station, and Eric (Kristina) Lukehart, Lexington, Ky., and one great granddaughter, Marissa Barnett, Cogan Station. MAPES -  Sidney A. Mapes, 85, formerly of Harding Ave. Williamsport, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Williamsport Home.   Born December 31, 1922 in Laquin, he was a son of Sidney and Zada Allen Mapes. He was a 1941 graduate of Williamsport High School. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII and was a POW for 17 months. Sid retired from Lycoming-Textron in 1988, and was a member of the V.F.W. #3428 and the American Legion Post 1. Surviving are his wife of 61 years the former Mary Agnes Creveling, two sons Sidney L. Mapes of Clearfield and John A. Mapes of Ocean City, MD, a daughter Deborah A. Bower (Jeffrey) of South Williamsport, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and two sisters Nina Fischer of Williamsport and Marcella Hiller of Dallas, PA  He was preceded in death by a brother Joseph Mapes and a sister Shirley Ludwig. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St. Williamsport, with the Rev. Richard D. Waters of First United Methodist Church officiating. McCLOSKEY - William B. McCloskey, 84, of Rural Ave., died Sunday, April 13, 2008 in Williamsport Hospital. He was born October 14, 1923 in Liberty, Centre Co., the son of Harry D. and Lula Boone McCloskey. William was married for 42 years to the former Roberta Deckman and she survives. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. William retired in 2006 as a chef after over 60 years at the Genetti Hotel. He enjoyed pitching quoits in a local league, fishing and cooking. William loved to watch football, baseball, golf and fishing shows. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a great father and a loving husband. Surviving besides his wife are six daughters, Robin S. (Thomas) Lisson, Elizabeth B. (David) Myers both of Williamsport, Peggy Flint of Colonial Heights, VA, Marie Monk of Olathe, KS, Annette Fisher and Jennette Zabelka both of Williamsport; a son, Michael of Williamsport; 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; three sisters, Anna B. Rice, Beatrice Confer both of Williamsport and Geraldine Siegfried of Montoursville. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. MERCURY - James Mercury, 83, of 425 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008 in the Jersey Shore Hospital. Jim was born Oct. 27, 1924 in Batavia, N.Y., the son of Ernest Mercury and the former Dorothy Treuggis. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Eugenia T. “Theano” MaFradas. They were united in marriage June 15, 1952 in New York City. Jim graduated from the Rochester Business College in 1950 and for 35 years he and his wife Theano were owners and operators of the former Shore Stationary Store. In the early 1960’s Jim served his community as a member and president of the Jersey Shore Borough Council. He also served two terms as mayor of Jersey Shore. For many years he was a notary public, justice of the peace and certified public accountant. Jim served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1943 until 1978. He served during WWII and the Korean War aboard the US Destroyer, Harold J. Edison. Jim was called up to serve during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963. Jim was active in serving as a lifetime member and past commander of both the Jersey Shore Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Jersey Shore American Legion. He also was a lifetime member of the Jersey Shore Elks Lodge 1057 and the Jersey Shore Fraternal Order of Eagles. For many years he was a member of the Holy Cross Russian Orthodox Church in Williamsport. Jim is survived by two sons, Ernest J. Mercury of Waterville and Richard J. (Cheryl) Mercury of Exton; two granddaughters, Cassondra Lynn Mercury and Stephanie Mercury; one grandson, Chris Mercury. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 25, at 12 noon in the Frederick B. MOSSO - Eugene F. Mosso, 86, of 1821 Motters Lane, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at his home following a brief illness. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a POW.  Eugene retired from Stroehmann’s Bakery after 37 years of service. Born July 25, 1921 in Williamsport, he was the son of Gerald F. and Katherine Ganan Mosso. Surviving are daughter, Bethann Kuntz of Pittsburgh; three granddaughters and a niece, Caroline Motter of Williamsport. MYERS - John B. Myers, 88, of 50 N. Fairview St., Lock Haven, Pa., died April 11, 2008 at his residence. He was born June 10, 1919 in Lock Haven and was the son of the late John and Maude Barner Myers. John was a 1937 graduate of the Lock Haven High School and a 1941 graduate of the Lock Haven University. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the 17th Airborne Division. Mr. Myers had taught briefly at the Avis High School. He then went to work for PP&L where he served as credit supervisor for the Montoursville facility, retiring in 1982. John had been an active member of the Hope Hose Fire Company, Lock Haven BPOE Elks and a former member of the Lions Club, as well as several other community organizations. He enjoyed his Saturday morning coffee klatsch group. John was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Hennessey Myers who died May of 2006. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Englert.  Surviving is a daughter, Kathleen (Cass) of Lock Haven, a son, Michael and his partner Peter Cerra of Hamilton, New Jersey. Also surviving is his sister in law Ana Ruth Hennessey of Lock Haven and several nephews, cousins, as well as a very caring circle of friends and neighbors.  Funeral services for John B. NEMETH - Joseph Nemeth, 91, died in the early morning of April 17, 2008 at Mercy Center in Dallas, Pa. Born in Ithaca, N.Y. March 10, 1917, he was the son of Joseph Nemeth and Julia Voss Nemeth. He was married to Mary Christopher Nemeth April 10, 1937. Joe graduated from Ithaca High School and worked for Remington Rand in Elmira from 1940 until the factory closed. He served in the US Army during World War II. He also retired from the Village of Waverly Water Department. Joe was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bird hunting and trout fishing. He and Mary enjoyed polka dancing and were members of Soaring Eagles of Elmira. Most of all Joe enjoyed being a grandpa, a role in which he excelled. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2002 and his beloved grandson Michael, who was killed in Iraq in 2005. He is survived by his daughter Marianne and son-in-law Jack Cleary, and his son Joseph and his wife, Kathy, of Michigan. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. NORK - Charles T. Nork Sr., age 86, died April 26, 2008, at Valley View Nursing Home Montoursville. He was born in South Williamsport the son of Lewis and Anita Povilitis Nork.Charles was a graduate of South Williamsport High School and a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. Charles worked as a truck driver for 42 years. He was employed by Franks Delivery and retired from Sears and Roebuck Co. Frank was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theatre of War He was a member the Top of the Hill Club as well as being a life member of the V.F.W. Post 7863 Duboistown and American Legion Post 104 in Montoursville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Fannie M. Nork, who died November 3, 2001. He is survived by a son Charles (Sherry) T Nork Jr., Grandchildren Cathy(Steve) Fullmer and Charles (Jennifer) Nork III and Anthony (Valerie) Nork. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers Joseph Nork, Lewis Nork and Anthony Nork. Also preceding him in death were six sisters: Anne Duffield, Helen Fry, Catherine Strouse, Agnes Reeder, Ruth Moser and Eisabelle Nork. OVERDURF - Ralph “Red” T. Overdurf, 80, of State College, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at his residence. He was born June 12, 1927, in Williamsport to the late Burns W. and Agnes Mann Overdurf.  He served with the US Navy during WW II. He worked for IBEW Local 812 in Williamsport for over 60 years as a Journeyman Electrician.  He was of Lutheran faith. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He is survived by five children, Harriett Knoffsinger of Mill Hall, Skip Overdurf and his wife Betty of State College, Terry Overdurf and his wife Janet of Jasper, Ark, Enola Weaver and her husband Mike of State College, Lydia Snyder of Bellefonte; a sister, Betty Long and her husband Henry of Dillsburg; twelve grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Ralph T. PAYAVIS - Leo Payavis, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died Sunday, April 6, 2008 at VNA Hospice of St. Luke’s in Bethlehem, Pa. Leo was born in Edwardsville, Pa., on Dec. 16, 1914, and was the son of the late Peter and Bronislas Payavis. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary in 1933 and was a graduate of Temple University Dental School, class of 1942. He married Helen Osterreicher in Williamsburg, Va., in 1942 and served in the US Army Dental Corp during World War II. Upon retirement from active duty, Dr. Payavis began a dental practice in Sayre, where he practiced dentistry until 1980. Dr. Payavis was predeceased by: his wife of 60 years; a brother, Benjamin; and a sister, Thecla. Leo is survived by: son, John R, of New York, N.Y.; daughter, Jean M. PAYNE - William E. “Duke” Payne, 99 of Seminole, FL (formerly of Painted Post, NY), died Monday, March 17, 2008 at Harbour Wood Health & Rehabilitation. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene. Born in Glen Richey, PA, he moved to Florida in 1970 from Painted Post, NY, where he owned and operated Payne’s Hardware for over 40 years. He was an Army Veteran of WWII. Locally, he was a member of the Victory Church of the Nazarene. Mr. Payne is survived by three loving daughters, Joan Sweitzer of Seminole, FL, Norma Canedy of Horseheads, NY, and Beth Sherwood of Seminole, FL; six grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. REEDER - James F. Reeder, 89, of 100 Sechler Drive, Montoursville, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the Gatehouse in Divine Providence Hospital. He was born January 10, 1919, in Montoursville a son of Foster A. and Florence Updegraff Reeder. A graduate of Montoursville High School in 1936 and unable to attend college, his early stint as a factory hand stimulated him to a lifelong study of industrial management. Although he never attended college, he eventually conducted business management seminars for Pennsylvania State University and the West Branch Manufacturer’s Association. Sponsored by Penn State University, he traveled throughout Pennsylvania, delivering speeches on various topics at business meetings. He was a member of the Williamsport Area Management Club for many years, and became the Chairman of the club’s “Top Management Advisory Committee”. He spoke at many of their dinner meetings, and conducted management training programs for the club. He also spoke at dinner meetings and ran seminars for management clubs throughout Pennsylvania. He was twice elected “Man of The Year” by the club, the only person to receive that recognition twice. Reeder’s business career began with employment by E. I. DuPont as Receiving Clerk during building of the Ordnance Works at White Deer. He was promoted several times, ultimately becoming Chief Receiving Supervisor for DuPont during the construction phase of the works. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943, he became a Master Sergeant in less than two years, and served in New Guinea and Luzon during World War II. After his discharge, he attended the Williamsport Technical Institute, studying Tool and Die Engineering. He was hired by Lycoming Motors (Avco) as a tool designer. There, in addition to designing many tools and dies, he was the detail designer for a 24 ft. rotary stand for dynamometer testing of bus engines. He left Avco and was hired by Schnadig Corporation (International Furniture) as Office manager in their Montoursville factory, and subsequently was promoted to Assistant Plant Manager, Plant Manager and President of Operations for the corporation. He was later promoted to Senior Vice President, and became the only non-family member of the Board of Directors. He also served on the Executive Committee and the Executive Compensation Committee. As Senior Vice President, he oversaw the operations in seven factories throughout the country, the company’s R&D operation, product development engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials procurement and the company’s large fleet of trucks. He designed and implemented entirely new corporate quality control and service programs. He was also vice president of the company’s plastics manufacturing “spin-off” company and vice president of the corporation’s trucking company. He retired from the corporation in 1984. After retirement, he served as a management consultant for several businesses in the area. He was a frequent speaker at business and civic dinners and meetings both locally and elsewhere throughout the state. He was the Memorial Day speaker in Montoursville five times, and frequently for other communities. Reeder early on became involved in civic affairs. He served in the board of directors of the Loyalsock Creek Watershed Association and on their executive committee. He was twice co-chairman of Montoursville’s Community Chest. He was given a life-long honorary membership in the borough’s Fire Department. He was president of three school boards simultaneously – the Montoursville Borough Board, the Montoursville Area Elementary Jointure board and the Montoursville Area Secondary Jointure board. More recently he served on the Strategic Planning Committee for the school district, and on the Superintendent Search Committee. He was a member of the Three Quarter Century Club and the VIPs (Volunteers at Indian Park), where he supervised the locating of memorial trees. He was a member of the retirees Computer Club. He served many years on the Divine Providence Hospital’s board of managers, and on their Finance Committee. He was on the board of the West Branch Manufacturer’s Association for many years, and served two terms as President of the Association. He had served on the board of the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy and on their executive committee, and was chairman of their personnel committee. He had been on the board of the Bald Eagle Art League, and served two terms as their President. He served on the Lycoming County Water and Sewer Authority board and was Chairman for three years during the construction and start-up of the Montoursville Regional Sewer System. He declined a fourth term as chairmen, but remained on the Authority Board. He resigned in February, 2005. In February of 2005 Lycoming County awarded him their Meritorious Service Award. The award was established – “to recognize individuals deserving of greater public recognition for their service achievements, and to exemplify to a meritorious degree, dedication and leadership.’ Reeder was a member of the Montoursville Methodist Church (Now Faith United Methodist) for nearly 80 years. He taught an adult Sunday School class for over 25 years. For many years he filled in as guest preacher for vacationing pastors in his own church as well as in many other churches in the area. Reeder’s avocation was nature photography. Working exclusively with ektachrome transparencies, he also had a collection of over fifty Cibachrome prints, museum-mounted, triple-matted, behind glass in custom frames – all museum quality. These prints were accepted, in art exhibitions nationally, regionally and locally, and won awards locally. In February, 2005, the Vanderlin Art Gallery designated him “Artist of the Month” and displayed an exhibit of his photography for the entire month. As a teenager, Reeder taught himself to play guitar and played for several years in a dance band (The Les Murray Band). In retirement, he taught himself to play the electronic keyboard and spent many hours playing the music of the “Big Band Era.” He is survived by his wife the former Evelyn L. Grittner with whom he would have celebrated his 68th wedding anniversary with on July 20, 2008. He is also survived by two daughters, Patricia A. and Sally L., both of Allentown. He was predeceased by three brothers, Dale, Harris, and Harley. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Faith United Methodist Church, 700 Fairview Drive Montoursville with the Rev. David P. McCullough officiating. Interment will follow in the Montoursville Cemetery. Friends will be received on Monday from 10 – 11 a.m. at the church. RYAN Thomas F. Sr.
Age 82, of Montour Falls, NY, died on Friday, April 18, 2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Elmira, NY. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Swann Ryan; children, Thomas F. Ryan Jr. of Odessa, NY, Donald (Sandra) Ryan of Montour Falls, NY, and Colleen (Robert) Quattrini of Big Flats, NY; grandchildren, Thomas III, Daniel and Lacey Ryan, Richard Ryan, Nicholas and Michael Quattrini. Mr. Ryan was a Veteran of WWII and was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Watkins Glen Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion of Watkins Glen. He was a 40-year member of the Watkins Glen Elk Lodge #1546 and a 40-year member of the Civil Air Patrol. Tom was the originator of the Schuyler County Taxpayers Association and was a Communicant of St. Mary's of the Lake Church. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Vedder and Scott Funeral Home, 122 N. SCHLORFF - William E. Schlorff, 89, of Aaron Dr. Lock Haven died Tuesday morning, April 29, 2008 at the Jersey Shore Hospital. He was born in Lavelle on July 5, 1918, a son of Henry and Edna Welker Schlorff. Bill married the former Eleanor Nardelli March 31, 1951, and she survives. He was a Staff Sgt. in the U.S. Army during World War II. Bill was a member of the Calvary and the 777th Tank Battalion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former member of the St. Martha’s Catholic Church of Fairmont Springs. For over 12 years he was a miner in Locust Gap, and for 26 years he was a furnace operator for Standard Press Steel. Bill moved to this area eight years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and the Phillies. Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by a daughter, Diane Swearer, of Levittown; a son, Dr. William J. (Karen) Schlorff, of Lock Haven; three granddaughters, Alison, Kirsten and Chelsea and a cousin Nellie Schlorff, of Levelle. Bill’s Life Celebration Memorial Service will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, Ltd. “A Life Celebration Home” of Jersey Shore. SCHIRRMACHER - Harvey S.  Age 83, of Elmira, NY, died on Friday, April 11, 2008, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Harvey was born on February 28, 1925 in Brookside, NJ, the son of the late Curtis and Frances (Horner) Schirrmacher. He was a decorated US Army Veteran of WWII from 1943 to 1945. Early in his career, Harvey was a Physical Therapist for the State of NY and Chemung County. He then worked 32 dedicated years at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center, primarily as Chief Therapist and Department Head. He also treated patients at Elcor Health Services. Harvey was an avid reader with extensive knowledge of history and other subjects. He was a lifetime health and fitness advocate who incorporated those ideals into his everyday life, often inspiring others. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemarie (Leis) Schirrmacher; daughter, Karen L. Schirrmacher; son, Walter and his wife, Kelly (Jansen) Schirrmacher and their children, Kurt and Katie, both of whom adored their grandfather and who were the joy of his life. Harvey is also survived by his sister, Carol (Schirrmacher) Hogue, her husband, Robert and their family; and sister-in-law, Margaret (Leis) Hudson, husband, Sam and their children, James and Susan. He was predeceased by his brother, Eugene Schirrmacher. It was Harvey's wish that no services be held. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. SCHRECK - William E. Schreck Sr. 82, of 121 Cabbage Hollow Road, Williamsport, and a guest at Manor Care Health Services, North, died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at the home. He was born September 19, 1925 in Williamsport a son of George I. and Ethel M. Anderson Schreck. He retired as a registered Architect with the former Wagner & Hartman Associates in Williamsport. He had numerous projects including the Roosevelt High School, the Williamsport High School, the Federal Building in Williamsport, and the Liberty Mutual building. He served in the United States Navy in WW II and was a member of the Eugene Grafius American Legion Post # 104 in Montoursville, and the Commanders Club of Disabled American Veterans. His other memberships included the La Belle Valley Lodge # 232 F. &A.M.; the Sojourners Lycoming Chapter # 509, the Lycoming Consolidated Sportsman, the Loyalsock Creek Mens Club, the Plunketts Creek Twp. Planning Commission, and the N.R.A. On March 23, 2008 he celebrated his 62nd wedding anniversary with his wife, the former Mary Jane Beyer. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, William E. (Ginny) Schreck Jr. of Proctor, and Shawn M. (Barb) Schreck of Mansfield; a brother, George Earl Schreck of Jersey Shore, and a granddaughter, Angie Schreck. The funeral service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. SEARLES Frank William
Age 92, of Dundee, NY, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, in Penn Yan, NY. There are no prior calling hours. A private graveside memorial service will be held at Hillside Cemetery, in Dundee, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee United Methodist Church, 35 Water Street, Dundee, 14837; the Himrod Fire Dept., Himrod, 14842; or the Dundee Fire Dept., 12 Union St., Dundee, 14837. Frank was born December 30, 1915 in the town of Cayuta, NY, the son of the late Judson Joseph "Joe" and Hattie Cornish Searles. A Steam Fitter, he worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard during World War II. He meet his future wife before being transferred to the Chicago Navy Yard; and on October 23, 1943 in Crown Point, Indiana he married the former Ethel M Yehle. They moved back East in 1946. He was employed by Plumbers & Steam Fitters Union Local 267, in Syracuse, NY, retiring in 1979. He and his wife also raised beef cattle and farmed 15 acres of vineyard. Mr. Searles was a member of Dundee United Methodist Church; a Founding Member and Life Member of the Himrod Fire Dept., Life Member of the Himrod Conservation Club, and a member of the Penn Yan Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #2030. He enjoyed hunting and farming. The last of eleven children, he is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel M. Searles at home; 3 sons, Louis J. Searles of Harrisburg, PA, Ross E. Searles of Lodi, and Neil W. Searles of Himrod; one daughter, Christine M. Heavner of Dundee; 7 grandchildren, Ross Searles, Scott Searles, Sarah Searles, Heather (Nick) Sorce, Shawn Searles, Jennifer Searles, and Jeffrey Searles; 5 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, John Heavner in 2002. Arrangements are by the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee.

SHAFFER - James W. Shaffer, 87, of 1606 Oakmont Drive, Williamsport, died peacefully, Monday, April 21, 2008 at home surrounded by his family. Born April 22, 1920 in Lewistown, he was the son of Reuel B. and Margaret Swartz Shaffer. He was an Air Force Veteran of WWII. He served in the South Pacific in the 5th Air Force, 35th squadron, 40th fighter group from 1941-1945. He retired from Weis Markets as district superintendent after 43 years. Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 1, a life member of Dietrick Lamade Blue Lodge #755, life member of the Williamsport Consistory, and the Irem Temple Shrine. He was a member of St. Paul-Calvary United Methodist Church and an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church for 50 years. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Helen (Termin) Shaffer; a daughter, Grace Dibert of Springfield, Ohio; two granddaughters, Wendy Chetcuti and Jody Fisher, both of Springfield, Ohio; two grandsons, Zach Shaffer of Rose Valley and Nathan Shaffer of Philadelphia; five great grandchildren; a brother, Paul B. Shaffer of Williamsport; two sisters, Janet S. Denny of South Williamsport, and Lois S. Smith of Williamsport. He was preceded in death by a son James Michael Shaffer in 1986 and a sister Betty Metzger. Jim was respected and loved by all who knew him. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Sanders Mortuary, 821 Diamond St., and on Saturday April 26, from 10-10:30 a.m. at St. Paul-Calvary United Methodist Church, 1427 Memorial Ave., Williamsport, a funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. John F. Rauhut officiating. Burial will be held in Wildwood Cemetery, with military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County.
