WHEELER Ora "Jay" Wheeler
of Hector N.Y., died
peacefully on Monday November 8, 2010 at Seneca View Nursing Home in Montour
Falls, N.Y. Born on February 10, 1921 in Reynoldsville, N.Y., Jay graduated from
Randolph High School in 1940. He worked for the Ford-Mercury dealership in
Wellsville, N.Y. as a mechanic until 1941. Jay joined the Army in late 1941 as a
member of the "Blue Devils" 88th infantry group from the Corning-Jamestown area.
Their tour of duty included Italy, Sicily, and Northern Africa, spending much of
their time in mountainous terrain. Jay was discharged from the Army in November
1945. Jay played both trumpet and saxophone in the "Blue Devils" band, and
enjoyed "Big Band" music all of his life. Jay retired in 1983 from Carpenter's
Union Local 603 after thirty-five years of service. Most of those years were
spent at Cornell University, Ithaca College, and both downtown Ithaca and
Elmira, working for Streeter Associates of Elmira N.Y. They specialized in
commercial construction, and Jay was a superintendent on many of these projects.
Jay, and his wife Phyllis, decided to move to Hector from Jacksonville, N.Y. in
1974. Jay and Phyllis established their retirement home on "THE HILL", along
with "Jay's Garage". "Jay's Garage" was a meeting place for many of his friends,
where he always found time to discuss carpentry work, or just any problem that
someone might have with a building project. He was a "Jay of all Trades", and
everyone was always asking for his advice. Jay spent many hours in his garage
with his dogs (he loved his dogs), making furniture, cabinetry, and other items.
People admired how he could make "something that would last a lifetime". Until
Jay's death, he was surrounded by the homes of some of his children and
grandchildren. Of course, Jay played a huge hand in helping build their homes!
Jay really was the "Man of the Hill". Jay was a member of Carpenter's Union
Local 603 and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling at the
Tri-County Lanes with his friends. One of his favorite pastimes was boating on
Cayuga Lake, and spending weekends at Taughannock Falls State Park with his
family on his boat at the marina. Jay and Phyllis Marie Dawson were married on
Veteran's Day in Interlaken, N.Y. in 1946. Phyllis stayed by his side until June
2009 when his Alzheimer's Disease placed him in Seneca View Nursing Home in
Montour Falls, N.Y. Upon his arrival at Seneca View, Jay made many friends. As
you walked down the hallway, you could see Jay in his wheelchair "wheeling
around" and hollering, "Hey Babe! Hey Babe!". Jay kept the place hopping! The
Seneca View staff loved him very much, and he loved them. He is survived by his
wife of 63 years, Phyllis, his children, Cynthia (Tom) Lilly of Ithaca, Charles
(Barbara) Wheeler and Susan (Charles Hendry) Wheeler, all of Valois;
grandchildren, Andrew Lilly, Chuck Haviland, Shelby Hagar, Chad Haviland, Joshua
and Olivia Wheeler, 12 great grandchildren, and a special nephew, Roger (Rita)
Swartwood. A Celebration of Jay's life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday,
December 4, 2010 at the Odessa American Legion Post #676, 2532 Steam Mill Road.
The family will then receive friends at a reception at the American Legion until
4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to the Seneca View
Patient Activities Fund, 220 Steuben Street, Montour Falls, 14865.
