A WILDERNESS CHURCH
The records of the Chemung [Wellsburg] Baptist Church begin with this preamble.
"Whereas we a number of members belonging to different Baptist churches having our lots cast in the wilderness land in the town of Chemung do find ourselves bound under the obligation of the Gospel of Christ as we are far distant from the privileges of any gospel Church of Christ do give up ourselves to the watch and care of each other and covenant to walk together in the rules of the gospel."
This church was the earliest church in the area, established in 1789 near the old Tioga river [now Chemung River], somewhat east of the village of Wellsburg. To place the year 1789 in historic perspective for the area, it is interesting to note that the first settler arrived in the area in 1788 and built the first house in 1789. This date is just six years after the Battle of Newtown, the major engagement of the Sullivan-Clinton ExpeditionDisclaimer: These records are very difficult to read. Some of the pages are worn and faded. Some entries have been totally obliterated by time. I have tried to maintain the original spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Where a word was illegible I have used —?— to indicate such. In some instances words have been repeated in a sentence or the spelling of a word is unusual enough to cause confusion. In that case I have used [sic] after the word to show that this was an accurate transcription. In a few cases I have added missing letters or words within [ ] to make it easier to read. Any words or letters found within brackets [ ] are my own and are not found as such in the original records.
