Delos MUDGE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornish MUDGE of Covington township,
has been working on the farm of John STRANGE of Mainesburg, during the present
summer season. on Thursday, with other workmen, he was manipulating the big
power hayfork unloading hay, when the rope holding the large heavy pulley broke
letting thepulley down upon his head fracturing his skull. He was rushed to the
Blossburg Hospital, where the surgeons operated on his head, endeavoring, with
the help of scientific methods, to assist nature toward a recovery. But it was
of no avail, however, for young MUDGE died Saturday morning at four o'clock.
Delos MUDGE was an exemplary young man. He graduated from
the Covington High School recently, and while attending school there he was a
universal favorite, popular with both teachers and schoolmates. He was an
industrious and ambitious young man, and wherever known was well liked.
Mr. MUDGE is survived by his father and mother; three sisters
and one brother; Doris, Mrs. Ralph BENSON, of Sullivan; Marion and Rachel at
home, and Robert, also at home. The funeral was held Monday p.m. at the home of
his parents D.J. GRIFFITHS officiating, The Bearers were young friends of the
deceased. Interment was in Prospect Cemetery. W. W. SHAW was the undertaker in
charge.
Mr GRIFFITHS did not preach a funeral sermon, composing and
reading the following poem instead:
Farewell, Delos! we'll never know
This side of the "Great Divide,"
The meaning of that pulley-blow,
The tragic death you died;
But we, your neighbors and your friends
Will never quite forget
How folks, with sympathetic ends
About your casket met.
The countryside iscast in gloom
Both old and young are sa,
That you, so soon, should meet your doom,
A bright, industrious lad.
Your mother and your dad are grieved,
God give them needful grace,
And may the children, sore bereaved,
Behold God's loving face.
The gracious folks in whose employ
You labored to the end,
Are crushed with sorrow o'er the boy
Their hearts would fain defend.
God bless your passing- youthful Mudge,
Reveal the gain in loss,
And we will trust the Righteous Judge
To make all plain, Delos.
