These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. SAUNDERS LINDA M KENDALL
Linda M. (Saunders) Age 57, of Gillett, PA, died May 8, 2006 in Robert Packer
Hospital in Sayre, PA. She is the loving wife of David L. Kendall. The couple
was married on August 19, 1967 and had 38 wonderful years together. Family and
friends are welcome to call at the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home Inc.,
110 West Main Street, Troy, PA, on Wednesday night, May 10, 2006, from
6:00-8:00 p.m. and 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12th. The funeral service
will be held after the viewing on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be
Rev. Garry Zuber of East Troy Baptist Church in East Troy, PA. Interment will
follow the service in Gillett Cemetery. Linda was born on July 7, 1948 in Troy,
PA. She was the daughter of Elizabeth (Dalton) Saunders of Gillett and the late
LaRue E. Saunders. Linda was a 1966 graduate of Troy High School and worked
after as a legal secretary in several law offices in the Troy area. More importantly,
Linda was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. Linda loved her
family more than anything. They include her mother; husband, David, sons,
Steven M. (Stephanie) Kendall and Brett D. (Sarah) Kendall, both of Gillett;
her grandchildren, Cody, Justin, Kayla and Hunter. She is also survived by her
brother, David (Barbara) Saunders; and sister, Shirley (Jim) Call, both also of
Gillett; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Besides her
father, Linda was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Saunders; and
sister, Bette Kennedy. Linda loved flowers. Anyone wishing to do so may send
them to the Vickery Funeral Home, Inc. in care of the Kendall family.
WILLIAM H. SAWDY - William H. Sawdy died at the family home on South Creek road, Monday morning after a prolonged illness, aged sixty-six years. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Harry Sawdy, of Corning, and Harold at home, two daughters, Mrs. Earl Congdon, Mrs. J. M. Bromley, of Gillett, Pa.; Bessie at home; three brothers, George, of Horseheads, Asa, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Fred of Gillett, Pa.; one sister Mrs. N. Chancey of St. Louis.Mo., and three grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the home, Thursday at 2 p.m. the Rev. William A. Grover to officiate. Burial in Gillett
SCRIVEN - WILCOX, Elsie M.
During the early morning hours of Saturday, July 11th, 2009, well-known Canton
resident, Elsie M. (Scriven) Wilcox died quietly at the Skilled Nursing Unit of
Memorial Hospital in Towanda. She was 82 years of age. Born October 17th, 1926
in Elmira Heights, NY, she was the daughter of Harrison and Marion (Seymour)
Scriven. Elsie joined the Community of Faith as a young girl, and was baptized
at the Wellsburg Baptist Church. Throughout her life she drew strength from her
relationship with the Lord. In the years following World War II, Elsie met a
returning serviceman named Martin H. Wilcox, and they were wed on June 6th,
1947. They settled in Fassett and raised two daughters. For thirteen years
Elsie was employed as a nutrition aid with the Bradford County Extension office
in Towanda, teaching homemakers how to stretch their food budgets without
compromising nutritional value. Later, the Wilcoxes moved to Florida, residing
there for thirteen years, after which they returned to Bradford County. In 1990
Elsie and Martin moved to McCallum Manor in Canton, where they were regular
attendees at the Church of Christ (Disciples). They shared a total of
fifty-eight years together until Martin's passing in 2005. Elsie built her life
around her beloved family and friends. She was one of those unique individuals
who could light up a room with her smile. With an encouraging word for
everyone, she faced life's trials undaunted and helped others to do the same.
Elsie is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Richard) Dean of Columbia Cross
Roads; stepdaughter, Patricia Handley of Buffalo, NY; grandson, Martin H. Dean;
and granddaughter, Kathryn Dean of Columbia Cross Roads; step granddaughter,
Joan; and step great-grandson, Nathaniel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins. In addition to her husband, Martin; she was preceded in death by
her brothers, Edward, Harry and David Scriven; and sisters, Norma Hunsinger and
Sharon Palmer. Visitation will be Wednesday, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Morse &
Kleese Funeral Home, Inc., 40 N. Center St., Canton. Service will follow at
1:30 with Pastor Richard Pratt officiating. Interment will be in Gillett

SEAFUSE--Solomon Seafuse, aged ninety-two years, died Saturday at the home of his son Aaron at Wellsburg. The funeral was held Monday at 11 a.m. at the house; burial at Gillett. Deceased was the grandfather of Dr. S. M. Seafuse, of Pine City.
SEELEY Betty J.
Age 81, of Gillett, PA, died surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday,
September 19, 2007, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY. Betty was
a silk screener for over 39 years at Corning, Inc. and retired in 1985. Family
and friends are welcome to call from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22,

SEELEY - Betty J. Seeley, 81, of Gillett, PA, died surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, September 19, 2007, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY. SEYMOUR Emily June Seymour Craig
Gillett, PA: Longtime resident of Gillett, PA and presently of Horseheads died on Saturday morning, June 11, 2011 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following an illness at the age of 87. Born on June 2, 1924 in Elmira; Emily was the daughter of the late, Frederick & Julia Mills Seymour. She was married to Glenn L. Craig on August 28, 1941 and he predeceased her on June 18, 1991. A homemaker, her pride and joy was providing a loving home for her family. She was an active member of the Gillett Baptist Church involved in many activities including the Bereans. Surviving are her loving children, Glenn A. (Gail) Craig, Melbourne, FL; Ronald (Becky) Craig, Troy, PA; Linda (Dale) McClelland, Gillett, PA; Carolyn Craig, Troy, PA; Darla (Neil) Moore, Horseheads; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great granddaughter, nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Emily was the last sibling of four sisters. ARTHUR VICTOR SHADDUCK JR., 79 of Gillett RD 1 died September 28, 1989 at Troy Community hospital. Born October 12, 1909 in New Brighton, PA he was the son of Arthur V. and Myra Brown Shadduck Sr. He was an electrical designer with the NCR Corporation in Dayton, OH and served with the US Coast Guard in World War II from July 1942 to September 1945. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dorothy Getter Shadduck; son, Robert Arthur Shadduck of Gillett RD 1; sister, Mrs. Nellie Brown of Owego, NY; several nieces and nephews. Age 70, of Fassett, PA, died December 11th, 2007 at home, surrounded by his
loving family. Dick was the son of the late Pete and Merle Jenkins Shedden. He
was survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Joan Miller Shedden; son and
daughter-in-law, Richard M. (Lori) Shedden Jr. of Fassett, PA; daughter and
son-in-law, Christine R.M. (Darryl) Maynard of Fassett, PA; son and
daughter-in-law, Jeffrey D. (Lisa) Shedden of Fassett, PA; seven grandchildren,
Casey, Katie, Kia, Jenny, Ashley, Cassie, and Blake; nephews, Duane (Helen K.)

was a devoted member of the Fassett, and Gillett community for many years. He
was proud to be a member of the South Creek Volunteer Fire Department, South Creek
Volunteer Ambulance, Lyons Club, South Creek Rod and Gun Club, Ridgebury
Sportsman Club, and Fassett Grange. Member of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers
Assoc., and the National Auctioneers Assoc. Dick has been an auctioneer since
1960. Operating Shedden's Auctioneer Service from the Shedden family farm. In
1968, together with his family, they opened Shedden's Wholesale Store. From the
beginning Dick served his friends and neighbors as best he could. He always had
time to sit, drink a cold beverage and catch up with an old friend. He loved to
travel, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His favorite time of the year was
Christmas. When he was able to see so many of his good friends, visit him at
the store. His dedication to the residences of the area will be missed, however
his family will continue to serve his legacy of caring. Those wishing, please

Rachel Fay Hutter, 69, of Gillett RR 2, PA died Monday, August 5, 1996 at the
Troy Community Hospital. She was born June 24, 1927 in Moreland Twp., Lycoming
County, PA, the daughter of Owen and Hazel Temple Sheets. She is survived by
her husband of 49 years (they would have been married 50 years on November 9,
1996), Joseph Hutter Sr; sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Cheryl Hutter
Jr. of Troy, William and Betty Sheets of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, James
Hutter, Heidi and Scott Hicks, Marilynne Hutter and Raelynne Hutter; sisters
and brothers-in-law, Helen and Robert Bircher of San Jose, CA, Gladys Shaw of
Fassett, PA, Louise Shaw of New York State, Doris and Howard Stone Jr. of
Fassett, Shirley and Doug Rarick of Fassett, Marie and Richard Purvis of

SILVERNAIL age 82, lifelong resident of the Gillett community passed
away Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was
born in Elmira, October 14, 1931 the son of the late Eldon and Mildred
(Lewis) Silvernail. Bob is survived by his loving wife and friend of 22
years, Jacquelin Hamlin (Coon) Silvernail of Gillett; daughter, Suzanne
(Allen) Putnam of Troy, PA; sons, Robert A. Silvernail of Elmira, NY; James
E. (Lana) Silvernail of Gillett, PA; stepchildren, Joel (Jennifer) Coon of
Elmira, and Rebecca (Joe) Holtby of Clifton Springs, NY; grandchildren,
Heather (Kenneth) Bohner, Sarah (Steven) Murray, Justin (Teresa) Silvernail,

known for his strong work ethic and skills working with heavy equipment. He

member of the Fassett Baptist Church and a charter member of the South Creek
Volunteer Fire Department. He loved going to his weekend campsite at
Sunflower Acres in Addison, where he rode his golf cart and was referred to
as the "Major". He always adored his home sweet home and going for rides on

81, of Gillett RD 1 died Thursday, March 26, 1987 at St. Joseph’s Hospital,
Elmira. Born August 31, 1905 in Binghamton, NY he was the son of William
LeRoy and Clara Mae Wright Smith. He was a retired employee of American
LaFrance and a member of Local 421, International Association of Machinists
and Aerospace Workers. Surviving are a wife, Frances Gregory Smith;
children: Rose Marie and Lee Cutting, OK; Clara Mae and Paul Williams,
Endicott, NY; Patricia and Edward Grantier, SC, Phyllis and James Seelye,
Troy, Penny and Gene Hemenway, Spencer, NY, Mary S. Casey at home, Richard
and Betty Rogers of Port Crane, NY, Robert and Shirley Rogers, Harpursville,
Charles Smith, Florida: a sister, Helen Savage and a brother, William Smith,
both of Johnson City, NY; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces

SMITH, LOUIS B. Services for Lewis B. Smith, 76, Gillett, were held March 21 at Vickery Funeral Home, Troy, with Rev. Donald Rockwell officiating and burial in Gillett Cemetery. Mr. Smith died March 19, 1984 at the Green Home, Wellsboro. He was born Aug. 21, 1907 in Smithfield, Twp., Bradford Co., son of John R. and A. Grace Cole Smith. He was formerly employed by Facet Enterprises, Elmira, and attended the Fassett Baptist Church. Mathew A. SMITH, 32, of Columbia cross Roads, Pa died Monday, march 30, 1998. Matthew was a member of the Laborers Local NO. 1358, Elmira, NY. He is survived by his wife Karen J. Smith; his children, Amanda and Stephanie Smith, at home; his father, Robert Smith Sr.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Christina Smith Jr. of Medina, NY and Richard and Jackie Smith of Erin, NY; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. SMITH -DOROTHY IRENE (SMITH) SWATSWORTH went home to be with her
Lord on Sunday, March 12, 2006, at the age of 90. She resided in Gillett, PA
and was a member of the Mosherville Bible Church where she taught Sunday
School, release time classes, attended faithfully and worked with the young
people. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy
Swatsworth; grandchildren, Susan Swatsworth of Columbia, SC; Captain Wade
Swatsworth and fiancée First Lieutenant Christine Hays of Watertown, NY, Ryan
Swatsworth and Milissa Augustine of Williamsport, PA; great-granddaughter,
Sydney Swatsworth; and her mother, Cindy Swatsworth of McAllen, TX; brother and
sister-in-law, Francis and Helen Smith of Horseheads, NY; sister, Mildred
Miller of Orlando, FL; sister-in-law, Thelma Havens of Daytona Beach, FL; along
with many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving
husband of 53 years, Stanley C. Swatsworth in 1989. A gathering of family and
friends will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at the Olthof Funeral Home,

SOMERS Phyllis T. CONNELLY, 50, of Gillett, PA died on Thursday, November 2, 2000. Phyllis was a member of the Meridian Chapter of O.E.S. for many years. born May 24, 1941 the son of the late John and Estelle Van Derzee Somers. He

Paul Sterling, 70, Gillett RR1, died Thursday, June 11, 1992 at the Arnot
Ogden Medical Center. He was a member of the South Creek Lions Club, was a
retired dairy farmer and attended Gillett Baptist Church. Mr. Sterling was an
artist and woodworker. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Ruth (Nash)
Sterling; children, Paula Mallory of Gillett, Stanley and Debra Sterling of
Gillett, Steve and Sally Sterling of Gillett; sister and brother-in-law,
Phyllis and Carl Oldroyd of Gillett; stepchildren, Janice and Lyle Foster of Troy,
Kenneth and Leslie Welch of Granville Summit, Phyllis and George Ebright, Cogan
Station, Charles and Linda Welch, Athens; eight grandchildren; 14
step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; 13 step great-grandchildren; aunts,

STERLING –PHYLLIS L. OLDROYD, age 77, (SRGP 37110) of Gillett, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at the Troy Community Hospital in Troy. She was born Dec. 2, 1927, the daughter of the late Millard H. and Pauline (Avery) Sterling. Phyllis was a life-long resident of Gillett. She married her childhood sweetheart, Carl M. Oldroyd celebrating 60 years of marriage on Dec. 16, 2004. Phyllis and her husband, Carl sold their dairy farm in 1951 and built the Phyl-Carlo Motel in 1952, adding a restaurant in 1959. The Oldroyd’s converted the motel into the Phyl-Carlo personal care boarding home in 1978. They sold their personal care home in 1991 to their youngest son, Kelly and his wife, Cindy. They then purchased the home of John Gillette, son of town founder Asa Gillette, and started the Gillette House of Bed and Breakfast. She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church in Gillett. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 60 years, Carl M. Oldroyd; sons, Forrest M. “Woody” Oldroyd and his wife, Jeanne of Gillett, Kelly R. Oldroyd and his wife, Cindy of Gillett; grandchildren, Jason, Josh and Andrea Oldroyd, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. THOMAS A. STEVES, SR., age 65, of Gillett, PA, died at the Troy Hospital, Troy, PA. (Oct. 2005) He was born on 29 June 1940 in Elmira, NY, the son of Kathleen Sokolwski and the late Russell Steves. Thomas was a member of the Sayre Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon. He retired from Kennedy Valve working as an electrician, a member of the IBEW union. A euchre player, an avid sports fan, including NASCAR, the Atlanta Braves. Thomas enjoyed going to Mormon Lake, gathering there with family and friends. Miss Mabel STURDEVANT.
Miss Mabel Sturdevant of Gillett, Bradford county, during the
Pan-American exposition met in Buffalo a young man from Charlotte, Mich., named
Copeland, and fell in love with him. After they returned to their homes
they frequently communicated with each other by letter, and about three months
ago Miss Sturdevan went to Charlotte to visit Copeland. Two weeks ago she
committed suicide by hanging. She had appealed in vain to Copeland to
make good his promise to marry her. Three hundred citizens of Charlotte,
upon learning of Copeland’s part in the tragedy, took him to the public square,
gave him a coat of tar and feathers, and warned him to get out of town within
twenty-for hours, under penalty of more severe punishment. He went.
Miss Sturdevant was 28 years old, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James
Sturdevant. The body of the young woman was brought to Gillett for

Wells News) Miss Trevis STURDEVANTdied at her home near Gillett last Monday of typhoid fever, aged about 21 years. She was an estimable young woman, beloved by a large acquaintance. Owing to a delay to notify undertaker Bloom, who had charge, the burial had to be made next day. The mother and three sisters are all ill with the fever and could not attend the burial. The funeral service will be held when the family are able to attend. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the cemetery at Gillett. TGR 1904

Doris Anna Age 64, of Titus Towers, Ithaca, NY, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006,
at the Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca after a brief illness. Miss Sullivan was
born in Elmira, NY, a daughter of the late Edward and Florence Dudgeon
Sullivan. She was graduated from Elmira Free Academy and had lived in
Slaterville and more recently in Ithaca, NY. She was employed as a Home Health
Care Aide prior to retirement. Survivors include two brothers, Daniel Sullivan
of Dryden and Patrick Sullivan of Elmira; two nieces, Jane (Sonny) Phillips of Ithaca,
and Anna Barnhart of Virginia; two nephews, David Lasher of Brooktondale,
William Lasher of Ithaca; several great-nieces and nephews, including Sarah
(John) Habalou and Taylor Habalou and Jeffrey Lasher. She was predeceased by
her sister, Ruth Lasher; and a brother, James Sullivan. Services will be

84, longtime resident of Gillett, PA passed away on Saturday, April 21,
2018. Ivan was predeceased by his parents, George and Margaret Tarafas. Ivan
is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Irene Tarafas. He was born in
Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1961. He loved nature,
hunting and his gardening. He was a loving husband and friend who will be

TEARS, Adelbert- aged 77, (SRGP 04271) died Tuesday evening, January 1, 1946, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louise Congdon, Gillett, RD. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Florence Shaw, Mainesburg, and Mrs. Addie Card, Sylvania, two grand daughters and one great grand daughter. KARL S. TERIBURY
Karl S. Teribury, 86, of Gillett RR 1, PA died Tuesday, May 10, 1994 at his
home. He was born December 31, 1907 in Gray's Run, PA, the son of Ellory and
Bertha Guthrie Teribury. He was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church, Gillett
Senior Citizens and the Northern Tier Sportsmen's Club. He was employed with
the Pennsylvania Railroad for 45 years. He is survived by daughters and
sons-in-law, Vivian and Carl Abbott of Towanda and Sharon and Thomas Steves of
Gillett; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Linda Teribury of Gillett; a
son, Neil Teribury of Gillett; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren;
sisters, Dorothy Andrus of Tioga, NY, Ledia Mays of Addison, NY and Nina Vroman
of Addison, NY; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Shirley Teribury,
Grace Erle and Frances Smith; and special caregiver, Phyllis Crandall. He was
predeceased by his wife, Bernice Teribury, in 1988; daughter, Leatrice Packard
in 1989; and son-in-law, Robert Packard, in 1989. Funeral services were held at
the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy on May 14 with the Rev. George Herrick and the
Rev. Charles Root officiating and burial to be in Gillett Cemetery. Memorials

TERIBURY –LEATRICE L. PACKARD, 60, of Gillett RD 2, died July 12, 1989 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. She was born April 11, 1929 in Ralston, PA, daughter of Karl and Lora Mason Teribury. She was a member of the Coryland Church and a member of Troy Golden Star Rebekah Lodge. Mrs. Packard was retired from Drs. Howland-Brooks-Sharlow offices in Elmira. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert Packard; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Karen Packard of Elmira; son, David Packard of Gillett RD 2; father, Karl Teribury of Gillett; two granddaughters, Laurie Packard and Lindy Packard; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vivian and Carl Abbot of Towanda and Sharon and Thomas Steves of Gillett; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Teribury of Gillett; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 15 at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy with the Rev. Charles Root officiating and burial to be in Gillett Cemetery. Neil C. TERIBURY, 65, of Gillett, PA died unexpectedly on October 20, 2002. He was born on January 22, 1937, a son of the late Karl S. Teribury and Bernice Ameigh Teribury. Neil owned and operated Neil’s Service Station in Gillett, PA. He was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church. Neil was also a member of the South Creek Lions Club. He was active in the Senior Games and was an avid bowler at Rossi’s in Elmira. Neil is survived by his son, Vincent Teribury and Jennifer Dunbar of Gillett, PA; daughters, Vicki Teribury and her husband Russ Byland of Gillett, PA, Kimberly Teribury and Brion Peters, Jr. of Gillett, PA; grandchildren, Mason Teribury, Brandi Miller, Aaron Dunbar; sisters, Vivian and Carl Abbott of Wysox, PA, Sharon and Tom Steves of Gillett; brother Ronald and Linda Teribury of Gillett, PA; companion, Sandy Colegrove of Gillett, PA; children’s mother, Shirley Horton of Troy, PA; several nieces and nephews; numerous friends. Neil was predeceased by a sister, Leatrice Packard; brother-in-law, Bob Packard; a nephew, David Packard. Friends and family are invited to call at the Gerald W. RONALD LARUE TERIBURY, 81 of Gillett, PA, passed away on Monday, October 31,
2016, at his home surrounded by his family. He was loving husband of the
late Linda M. (Pelchy) Teribury who passed away November 29, 2014. The
couple married in 1962 and had 52 happy years together. Ron was born on
April 10, 1935 in Gillett, PA, son of the late Karl S. and Bernice I.
(Ameigh) Teribury. He was a Troy High School graduate, was a USArmy Veteran
serving his country in the Korean War and retired from Fairway Spring
Company of Horseheads, NY as the Lead Set Up Man. He was a member of the
Gillett Baptist Church, was a lifetime member of the South Creek Lions Club,
and enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, and hunting. Ron is survived by his
children: James (Sharron) Teribury of Watkins Glen, NY, Timothy (Andi
Simpson) Teribury of Troy, PA, Rebecca (Mike) Bradley of Mosherville, PA,
and Keith (Annette Mitchell) Teribury of Gillett, PA, sixteen grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren, his sisters Sharon Steves of Gillett and Vi Abbott
of Towanda, along with several nieces and nephews including his special care
givers Courtney Burdick, Tammy Stone, and Vicki Teribury. He was preceded in
death by his parents, his wife Linda, his brother Neil Teribury, and his
sister, Leatrice Packard. Family and friends may call from 11:00 am-1:00 pm
on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Gillett Baptist Church, 33241 Route 14
Gillett, PA. The funeral service to honor Ron's life will begin at 1:00 pm

THOMAS –M. ARLENE of Elmira, NY age 70 died Friday, December 15, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a very brief illness. Arlene was born November 6, 1930 in Ithaca, NY the beloved daughter of the late Frank Thomas and Elsie Auble. She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Clifford W. Roy Sr., who she married December 22, 1956. Also surviving are her children, Sheilia and Allen Silvernail of Elmira, Rene and Mike Butler of Horseheads, Lucinda Search of Columbus, Ohio, Clifford and Beth Roy Jr. of Mosherville, PA and Robert Miller Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; several priceless and loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; loving sisters include, Beverly Chalk of Elmira, Rita Berlin of Elmira, Nancy Bennett of Corning; loving brother, Leslie Thomas of Elmira. Loving Wife, Mother & Grandmother - A resident of Gillett, PA, was born
April 19, 1939 in Spangler, PA, the daughter of the late James and Hazel
(Hetrick) Thomas, died peacefully on November 14, 2009 at the Arnot Ogden
Medical Center at the age of 70. Her beloved daughter, Sandra Colavita
predeceased her on October 29, 2007. Joanne is survived by her loving husband,
Paul A. Westrick Sr., with whom she recently celebrated 50 wonderful years of
life and love with; beloved children, Paula A. (Bruce) Maynard of Gillett, PA,
Calli J. Ford of Gillett, PA, James M. Westrick of Pine City, NY, Paul A.
Westrick Jr. of Gillett, PA; much loved grandchildren, Colleen and Donald
Austin, Jessica and Jennifer Noble, Christina and Daniel Ford, Joshua Keck and
Jacob Westrick; adored great-grandchildren, Abigail Grace, Lillianne Jane and
Jackson; sisters, Jane Semelsberger of Hastings, PA, Doris (Lynn) Baum, also of

Marine Corps League of which her beloved Paul was a member. Joanne was also the
number 1 fan of Penn State and Notre Dame football teams and was an avid New
York Mets fan as well. Her husband will always remember her for being a
wonderful wife and her children will remember her as being a full-time loving

November 18, 2009, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Prayer

a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 224 Franklin

THORPE Shirley Ann Congdon
former resident of the Mansfield and Fassett, PA communities, died Monday evening, May 2, 2011 while residing in Dade City, FL following declining health. Born on September 6, 1943, Shirley was the daughter of the late Lewis & Margaret Ely Thorpe. She married Karl Congdon on December 6, 1959 in Daggett, PA. Together they raised a loving family. She was a member of the Fassett Baptist Church and was well known having been employed as a clerk in several local stores. Her interests included reading, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren when possible. She especially enjoyed being with Karl when he was playing his drums and spending time with their friends. Robert Louis TILLINGHAST SR., age 82, of Fassett, PA died Tuesday, May 6, 1997 at the troy community Hospital. Robert was born on May 18, 1914 to Louis and Vera Mae (Golden) Tillinghast in Elmira, NY. He graduated from Troy High school in 1932. He spent his entire life in Fassett, PA where he was a successful dairy farmer and was an excellent breeder of Holstein cattle. (“Let us never forget that cultivation of the earth is the most important labor of man.” –Daniel Webster) He was a charter member of the South Creek.Rod and Gun Club and belonged to the Northern PA Fax Hunters’ association. He managed the Gillett baseball team for many years and was a member of the Fassett Grange and the Fassett Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosamond (Harkness) Tillinghouse; son, Dale Tillinghast and fiancée Dawn Zimmer of Fassett; daughter, Dawn Townsend of Elmira, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Terry Houston of Fassett; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Orilla and Elwood Mallory of Horseheads, NY. FRED TONGUE JR.
Fred Tongue Jr., 42, of Gillett, RD 2, died Sunday, May 3, 1992 at Robert
Packer Hospital. Fred was a charter and life member of the South Creek
Volunteer Fire Department and a former first assistant chief for 14 years as
well as a trustee. Being an active firefighter, he also served as
Pennsylvania Forest Fire Warden for 12 years. He was a charter member of
the Northern Tier Sportsman's Club and president of the South Creek Northern
Tier Sportsman's Club, an active member of the Northern Tier Trap League and
Owl League and a member of the NRA. He was employed as a tool maker at Hilliard
Corporation for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Christine Culver Tongue;
daughter and son-in-law, Susan and William Hawthorne of Gillett, PA; daughters,
Michelle and Pamela Tongue, both at home; granddaughter, Rachael Hawthorne;
mother-in-law, Carmela Culver of Gillett, PA; brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Stephen and Donna Culver of Gillett and Michael and Cindy
Culver of Gillett; a nephew and four nieces; several aunts and uncles, cousins
and numerous friends. Funeral services were held at the Olthof Funeral Home in

TUNING -MARTHA V. KRESS, age 74, of Fassett, PA
joined a heavenly choir on Monday, April 27, 2020, and today that choir
sounds so much sweeter. She recently suffered a heart attack followed by
declining health. She was born on April 11, 1946 in Canton, PA, daughter of
the late, Robert and Mary Rockwell Tuning. Martha married the love of her
life and companion, 51 years ago, Dale Lee Kress. They have two loving sons,
Dale Lee Kress Jr. and Dan (Lauren) Kress; four grandchildren, Lucas,
Alaina, Maggie and Jackson all of Fassett, PA; a sister, Nina Campbell;
nieces, nephews, cousins and a community of cherished friends. In addition
to her parents, Martha was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Gibbs; brothers,
Pete Tuning, and Jeremiah (Martha) Tuning; and a brother-in-law, Claire
“Babe” Campbell. Martha retired from N.Y.S. Dept. of Corrections where she
worked as a secretary. Her love of the Lord and family was everything to
her. Martha loved cheering on her grandchildren at sporting activities. From
family camping trips to tractor shows, she and Dale always took time to show
their love and affection for their grandchildren. She was well known for her
singing abilities as well as her cheerful, fun loving wit and larger than
life persona. Many a gathering, church service, funeral, and ice cream
social is where she touched countless lives with her gift of song and
storytelling. Her sidekick, Bucky Jetter made their presence even more

CLEO BELLE TUNNICLIFF, 63, of RD 2 Gillett died Monday, July 1, 1985 at home. Born Sept. 17, 1921 in Troy, she was the daughter of Leon and Lana Brown Tunnicliff. A former Sunday school teacher at the Fassett Baptist Church, she was ordained a minister through practical study in 1964. She corresponded regularly with Rex Humbard, Oral Roberts, Jim Swaggart and the PTL Club. She is survived by three brothers, Leon of Elmira, and James and Roman of Wyalusing RD 3; two sisters, Sylvia Hicks of Binghamton and Lillian Borden of RD 1 Hinsdale; one aunt, Cecil Ameigh of Elmira; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Charlotte Mae (Updike) Fosterling, 69, of Huntington Station, NY, died
June 10, 2002. She was born May 31, 1933, the daughter of the late Charles and
Clara (Bristol) Updike. Charlotte was a 1951 graduate of Troy High School,
Troy, PA and graduated from Zion Bible Institute in Providence, RI in
1956. She was a member of the Hungtington Assembly of God Church. She is
survived by her husband of 39 years, Vernon; son, Joseph (Beth) and grandson
Andrew; daughter, Connie, all of Huntingdon, NY; sisters, Clarabelle Decker of
Gillett, PA and Christine (Richard) Freeman of Lawrenceville, PA; brother, Leon
Updike of Montour Falls, NY; mother-in-law, Gudrun Fosterling of Locust Valley,
NY; along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents;
brother Alton (Genevieve) Updike; father-in-law, Borge Fosterling; and her
first husband, Andrew Joseph Freeman. Funeral services were held June 13 at the

age 83 of Gillett, Pa., died on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at home. She was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Geneva, N.Y., daughter of the late Charles and Clara (Bristol) Updike. She was a graduate of Troy High School's class of 1950. She was married to the late LaRue Decker, who predeceased her on Sept. 2, 1992.Family and friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at the Gerald W. Vickery Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 1093 W. Main St., Troy, Pa. The family will also receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the Victory Church, 645 E. Main St., Troy Pa. Clarabelle was formerly employed at C&K Laundry, The Retirement Center and she was always busy working side by side with her husband at the family business selling antiques and at Dave's Sporting Goods from 1979 until her death. She was a former member of the Elmira Christian Center and was currently involved with the Victory Church in Troy. She loved to travel and enjoyed music. She played piano at the Phyl-Carlo Nursing Home for many years for the residents' enjoyment. She loved her family and her community and will be sadly missed by many. GLENN W. UPDIKE, a long-time resident of Gillett, died Thursday morning, May 13, 2004, in the care of the Bakercrest Home for the Elderly, where he had resided for the past few years. Born on June 18, 1917 in Gillett. Glenn was the son of the late A. Lincoln and Caroline Knapp Updike. He married his lifelong companion of 65 years, Frances Griffen, on March 17, 1939. Together they devoted their lives to raising a family, serving the Lord, and may years of caring for their family farm in Gillett. He was a founding member of the South Creek Evangelical Church. Surviving are his loving family; his wife, Frances Griffen Updike, Millerton; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Margaret Updike, Pine City; Daniel and Evelyn Updike, Hamlin; five grandchildren, James (Cris) Updike, Amy (Bob) Atwater, Dr. Glenn Updike, Mattie (Joel) Zarpentine, and Daniel (Caryn) Updike; three great-grandchildren, Eli, Jenna, and “AJ”, and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Glenn was predeceased by his four brothers, Chester, Foster, Charles and Lynn Updike and his three sisters, Catherine Fowler, Blanche Brewer and Grace Palmer. LYNN UPDIKE, devoted husband, father and grandfather, age 94, Gillett, died on Saturday, November 29, 2003. He was a lifetime farmer and was retired from PennDOT. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and the guitar. Lynn faithfully served his church and was a longtime member of the Coryland Church. school teacher in the Sullivanville Elementary School, Sullivanville, NY for many

VANDERZEE Estelle SOMERS, 87, of Gillett, PA died Sunday, April 25, 1999 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, PA. She was the daughter of the late John and Henrietta Pollack VanDerzee born April 23, 1912. She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star #71, Canton where she held the accomplishments of Past Matron, Past District Deputy and Past Grand Committee. Was born August 8, 1960 in Elmira, New York, the beloved daughter of Paul and

Arnot Ogden Medical Center after a courageous, hard fought battle with cancer
at the age of 47. Sandra is survived by her loving husband of one and a half

58, of Gillett, Pa. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1954. Mrs. Harkness & her husband
operated a general store at Gillett for many years. She also served as
postmaster at Gillett for 16 years. Survived by husband Earl Harkness, son
Wayne Harkness of Gillett, sister Mrs. Nellie Wright of Elmira, brothers
Arthur, Lee & Charles all of Erin, William Wheaton of Erie Pa.; three

HOWARD J. WHEELER – On February 2, 2009 Howard J. Wheeler of Laurel
Hill, FL died
quietly at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 67
years of age. He was born in the coal mining town of Pikeville, KY and
for several years worked in the mines with his father and uncles. Eventually
Howard left behind the coal miner’s life for a successful career as an
auctioneer. He was a natural at buying, selling, wheeling and
dealing. He enjoyed fishing and tinkering with classic automobiles.
He also enjoyed people and often remarked that he never met a stranger.
Howard also had a deep, abiding faith in the Lord and drew upon his Heavenly
Father for strength and encouragement. His philosophy of a life well
lived consisted of hard work, perseverance and recognizing one’s gifts and
calling. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carolyn at home,
children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Viewing and services
were held at Morse & Kleese Funeral home, Canton with the Rev. Josh Payne
of Victory Church officiating. Interment followed in Gillett Cemetery.

WILCOX -CYNTHIA 'CINDY' DEAN of Columbia Cross
Roads, PA passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, Aug. 3, 2019 at the
Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. Cynthia Sue was born to the late Martin and
Elsie (Scriven) Wilcox in 1958 and would have celebrated her 61st birthday
on Aug. 22, 2019. Cindy attended Troy High School and graduated with the
class of 1977. On Aug. 23, 1991, she married Richard L. Dean Sr., together
sharing nearly 28 years of loving marriage. Her main interest in life was
the love she shared in her home and with family, especially her
granddaughter. Cindy loved animals, camping and was a talented crafter.
Surviving Cindy is her husband, Richard Sr.; son, Martin Dean (and Jon Cox)
of Binghamton, NY; daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Miller (and Jon) of Columbia
Cross Roads; granddaughter, Bethany; step-children, Dawn Marie, Richard
“Buddy,” Cindy K., Tommy and Steven; a sister and best friend, Debbie Glose
of Sayre; a half-sister, Pat; several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews,
cousins, dear friends, Barb and Ken Stevens. In accordance with Cindy’s
wishes there will be no services. A private family graveside will be held in

GEORGE F. WILSON SR. 87 of Gillett, PA, died on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at Troy Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Wilson; daughter, Ruth Ann Lowry; and sons, Thomas Wilson and George Wilson, Jr. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bill Burdick of Gillett, PA; son and daughters-in-law, Richard and Regina Wilson of Wellsburg, NY, and Charles and Sue Wilson of Southport, NY; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with special thanks to his granddaughter, Missy (Daughtery) Warren, and to all the staff at Troy Hospital for their help and support. Two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; and his special friend, Lucille Gernert also survives him. George was a veteran of World War II, worked and retired from both the Pennsylvania Railroad and General Electric. He was an avid horseshoe player, he enjoyed bowling and fishing his whole life, and he will be missed by all who knew him. NELSON E. WILSON
Nelson E. (Nick) Wilson, 84, of Gillett RR 1, died Sunday, November 24,
1991 at the Bradford County Manor. Nick was a retired tool maker from Martin
Marrietta Corp., Orlando, FL and was formerly employed by Remington Rand,
Elmira. He was a US Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his
daughters and sons-in-law, Winnie and Wayne Harkness of Elmira, and Joyce and
Dick Berry of Gillett; son and daughter-in-law, LaRue and Dora Ann Avery of
Gillett; grandchildren, Sharon Sifnakis, Roger Harkness, Diane Bones, Debbie
Haxton, Randy Avery, Pam Updike, Rod Avery and Renee Harkness; 17
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four nieces and one nephew. He
was predeceased by his wife, Winifred Wilson, on December 24, 1990. Funeral
services were held at the Olthof Funeral Home in Elmira on November 20 with the
Rev. George Herrick and the Rev. Charles Root officiating and interment to be

Ruth A. Lowery, 45, of Gillett RR 1, died Tuesday, June 23, 1992 at the
Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. She was born January 5, 1947 in Elmira, NY,
the daughter of Tom and Alice Kerrick Wilson. She was employed with the Troy
Area School District for a number of years. She is survived by her husband,
Harold E. Lowery of Gillett RR 1; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa A. and Todd
Heckman of Bath, NY, Lori A. and Henry Saxton of Granville Summit, PA and Cindy
A. and Tom Woodward of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Melissa and Tabatha Saxton;
her father, George F. Wilson Sr. of Gillett; brothers and sisters-in-law,
George F. Jr. and Shirley Wilson of Elmira, NY, Richard and Regina Wilson of
Wellsburg, NY and Charles and Sue Wilson of Elmira, NY; a sister and
brother-in-law, Susie and Bill Burdick of Gillett; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Angela Lowery, in 1967; her mother, Alice
Wilson, in 1990; and a brother, Tom Wilson, in 1985. Funeral services were held

WINTERMUTE John Garey of Gillett, PA Was born July 25, 1925 in Wyalusing, PA, the son of the late John S. and Bertha (Garey) Wintermute, died peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 81. His loving wife of 34 years, L. Lorraine (Roy) Wintermute; brother, Norman Wintermute; sister, Evelyn Morse, all predeceased him. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Anne Wintermute; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Robert Barton, all of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Adam Wintermute, Jeremy Jordan, Joshua Passage, Jeffery (Mandi) Barton, Jesse Barton and Angelina Barton; great-grandson, Chavez; brother, Earl (Genny) Wintermute of Bentley Creek, PA; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends and family he loved dearly. John retired from the Ingersoll Rand Company in Athens, PA after 30+ years of dedicated service as a machinist. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served his country from 1948-1952. Eva Louise Worthington Austin, age 78, of Elmira, N.Y., formerly of Fassett,
died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, after
a lengthy battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, David
Austin of Fassett; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly (Dale) Foust of
Mainesburg, Pa., and Kathy (Stan) Harris of Elmira, N.Y.; sons, Francis Raplee

Betty Lou Wright, 59, of Gillett RD 1, died April 15, 1990 at the home of
her aunt, Florence Watson, with whom she had lived for 50 years. She was born
June 27, 1930 in Elmira, the daughter of Delos and Gertrude Stamp Wright.
She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church. She is survived by her
stepmother, Kathryn Wright of Nassau, NY; half-brothers, Michael Wright of
Buskirk, NY and David Wright of Nassau; aunts, Florence W. Watson of Gillett RD
1 and Myrtle Carpenter of Elmira; uncles, Allen (Dorothy) Wright of Gillett nad
Paul Kingston of Cupertino, CA; several cousins including Esther Watson of
Gillett of RD 1, Sylvia Roy of Gillett RD 1 and LaRue Roy of Gillett; several
nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held April 17 at the Vickery Funeral
Home in Troy with the Rev. Charles Root officiating and burial to be in Gillett

WRIGHT Duane E. "Weiner"
A longtime resident of the Coryland, PA community died, Sunday morning,
September 13, 2009 following a 40 year battle with M.S. at the age of 64. Born
on May 26, 1945, Duane was the son of the late Allen & Dorothy Marsh
Wright. He served his country in Thailand during the Vietnam War in the United
States Army and quickly achieved the position of Sergeant. While in service he
was awarded several honors for his service. Duane married Carolyn Jordan on
September 28, 1968 in the Fassett Baptist Church by Pastor Donald Rockwell. A
hard working man, Duane was employed by Upstate Tool Inc. and Corser
Manufacturing for many years. He enjoyed his life's work and was well respected
in the Tool and Die field by his colleagues. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed
hunting, bike riding, and was a passionate Richart Petty fan. Duane was also a
woodworker and in his time off enjoyed helping his neighbors and friends. He
was proud of, and preferred his red Farmall Tractor to any green ones.
Surviving is his loving family, daughter and son-in-law, Susan & Rick
Bartlow, Gillett, PA; son, Robert Wright, Chandler, AZ; Duane's former wife and
loving friend, Carolyn Jordan, Fassett, PA; many cousins including, special
cousin, Pat Magin; step grandchildren, Rebecca and Rickie Jr. Bartlow; step
great grandson, Ajay Bartlow; and many cherished family friends who will be
received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport on
Friday September 18, 2009 between the hours of 5-8 p.m. and again on Saturday
morning from 9–11 a.m. Funeral services will follow the Saturday morning
visitation at 11 a.m. with longtime friend, the Reverend Donald Rockwell

Elsie Permelia (Young) Kelly, 94, of Ocala, FL died May 31, 1992 in
Ocala. She was born in Gillett, PA and resided there for many years. She is
survived by granddaughters, Beverly Osborne of Hawley, PA and Barbara Freeman
of Silver Springs, FL; grandson, Michael Young of Syracuse, NY; several
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her
husband, Howard Kelly, in 1984. Memorial services were held at the Gillett

Marge was born in Boonton, NJ and had graduated from Bernardsville High School
(Basking Ridge). She worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital of Lyons,
NJ and retired as the secretary to the Chief of Radiology. Marge was a member
of the ABW (American Baptist Women) of the First Baptist Church; she was also a
member of the Home Bureau - Country Cousins Group; plus she was involved with
the Senior Citizens Center; all of Gillett, PA. Marge was also an active member
of the Gillett Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Edythe
King-Sanders and three grandsons, Shawn King, Daniel King and Michael D'Avella,
all of Holiday, FL. She is also survived by her sister, Alice Bingert of
Washington, NJ; two nieces, Diane Shultz of Collegeville, PA, Pastor Janice
Sutton of NJ; nephew, William Sutton of Neshanic Station, NJ; and five

Edna R. Kopson, 68, of Fernandina Beach, FL died unexpectedly on February 23,
1996 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL. She was a retired
registered nurse and a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in
Fernandina Beach and a former member of the Gillett Baptist Church in Gillett,
PA. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Mrs. Kopson moved to Florida 1-1/2 years ago
from Gillett, PA. She is survived by her husband, Joseph C. Kopson of
Fernandina Beach; stepdaughter, Charlotte Catherman of North Wales, PA; two
