 Lois Mae Clink, 68, of Gillett, PA died Wednesday, November 20, 1996 at Troy Community Hospital, Troy, PA. Lois was an active member of the Gillett Baptist Church, Gillett, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Troy. Lois is survived by her children, David K. (Sandy) Clink of Troy, Diane (Wayne) Blasi of Sayre, PA and Paula (Bud) Ameigh of Gillett; grandchildren, Stephanie and Bobby Clink of Troy, Adam and Amanda Ameigh of Gillett, Sara Blasi of Sayre, PA; sisters, Kathryn Vandemark of Wyalusing, PA;  Irene DeWolfe of Mehoopany, PA; Mila (Max) May of Canton, PA; brothers, Paul Adams of Laporte Methodist Home, Raymond Adams of Sugar Run, PA; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and numerous friends who remained loyal to her throughout her illness. Lois was predeceased by her husband, Fayette Clink, April 15, 1982; brothers, Miles, Elmer, Earl Adams and her sister, Josephine Youkin. She was a member of the Baptist Church in Gillett.

Wheeler, Mrs. Ada M-77, of Troy died Friday evening, June 10, (1948). She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Hickok of Troy, Mrs. Floyd  Elwell of Elmira and Mrs. Samuel Kerrick of Gillett; three brothers, Fred and George Ameigh of Gillett and Donald Ameigh of Syracuse, NY; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

ADAM MICHAEL AMEIGH, 17, Gillett died Thursday, December 4, 1997 due to an auto accident.  He was born October 10, 1980, the beloved son of Bud and Paula Ameigh and the brother of Amanda Ameigh.  He also is survived by his grandparents Llewelyn and Peggy Ameigh, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. And many close friends.  He was predeceased by his grandparents Fay and Mae Clink.  Adam was a junior at Troy High School who enjoyed chatting on the Internet (talking MIRC).  He loved life, his family, and his friends.  He was a member of the school band, Ski Club, Mountain Biking Club, and basketball team.  He loved snowboarding and playing the drums.  Funeral and committal services were held December 8 at the First Baptist Church, Troy with the Rev. Garry Zuber and Rev. AMEIGH –BERNICE I. TERIBURY, 80 of Gillett RD 11 died September25, 1988 at home.  She was born July 29, 1908 in Wells Township, Bradford County a daughter of Nelson and Lora Mason Ameigh.  She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church, the Troy Golden Star Rebekah Lodge #462 and was a former Troy School Board member.  She was employed at the Phyl-Carlo Restaurant for many years.  She is survived by her husband, Karl Teribury of Gillett; daughters, Mrs. Robert (Leatrice) Packard of Gillett, Mrs. Carl (Vivian) Abbott of Towanda, Mrs. Thomas (Sharon) Steves of Gillett; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Linda Teribury of Gillett, Neil and Shirley Teribury of Gillett; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held at the Vickery Funeral home in Troy on September 28 (11 a.m.) with the Rev. LLEWELLYN ‘LEW’ AMEIGH - A long time resident of the Gillett, PA community passed away Sat. morning, September 27, 2014 at Elcor Health Services at the age of 86. Born on Aug. 23, 1928 in Williamsport, PA, Lew was the son of the late, Leslie D. & Anna M. Lewis Ameigh. He married Margaret "Peg" Kendall on April 21, 1949 in Canton, PA and she predeceased him on Nov. 29, 2008 after nearly 60 years of dedication to each other. A devoted husband and father, Lew was employed by Collins & Walton as a pipe fitter for many years. He was well known in the Gillett and Fassett communities where he was a dedicated member of the Fassett Baptist Church, proudly ringing the church bell every Sunday following services; as well as the South Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. He found much enjoyment in "Water Witching", welding and building, trips with his beloved "Peg" to the Bloomsburg Fair, and quality time with his large and loving family who survive; his seven children, Connie (Jim) Avants, Columbia Cross Roads, PA; Rodney (Esmeralda) Ameigh, Phoenix, AZ; Scott (Judy) Ameigh, Gillett, PA; Linda (Jim) Havens, Gillett, PA; "Buddy" (Paula) Ameigh, Gillett, PA; Eric (Margretta) Ameigh, Hummelstown, PA; Mark Ameigh, Syracuse, NY; sisters, Vivian (Thomas) Walsh, Bentley Creek, PA; Carol (Donald) Osgood, Park City, MT; brother-in-law, Marvin Berry, Columbia Cross Roads, PA; many grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many family friends.  Robert W. Ameigh, 73, of Elmira, NY died December 29, 1989 at the Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira after a brief illness. Mr. Ameigh operated East side Barber Shop on East Church Street for 21 years, and was associated with Herrick's Barber Shop following that. He is survived by his wife, Truus; three sons and six sons; eight grandchildren; sisters, Marjorie Nichols, Genevieve Kamp and Ann McIlwain, all of Elmira, NY, Louise Pierce of Columbia Cross Roads, PA; brother, Howard Ameigh of Loudonville, NY. AMES - NELLIE H. TAYLOR
 Nellie H. (Ames) Taylor, age 74, formerly of Gillett, PA, died on Tuesday, January 30, 2001 at the Bradford County Manor, West Burlington, PA. She was born on November 19, 1926 in Gillett, PA, a daughter of the late Byron and Bertha (Batterson) Ames. Nellie was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Elmira, NY.  She was employed by Remington Rand, Taylor Packing Company and DuMaurier Co. where she worked when she retired in 1987, all in Elmira, NY.  Nellie was an active volunteer at the Gillett Senior Citizen Center. Nellie is survived by her son, John E. Taylor and Thomas N. Taylor, both of Gillett, PA; brother, Byron (Evelyn) Ames of Gillett, PA; sister, Wilma Tischer of Gillett; several nieces and nephews including special niece, Donna Tischer of Gillett, PA. She is predeceased by her first husband, Bernard Zaback in 1953; second husband, Henry S. Taylor in 1988. Memorial services were held at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy on February 7 with the Rev. Mrs. Minnie Judson died at the family residence at Fassett, Pa. Wednesday, aged forty-five years. She is survived by her husband, J.B. Judson, & five children - Lawrence, Lester, Owen, Mae & Evelyn all at home, a brother Henry Andrus of Athens, Pa., & a sister Mrs. Jennie Louk of Corning. ANTES Howard

Age 83 died Monday December 10, 2012 at his Fassett, PA home while in the care of his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 12, 1929 in Liberty, PA, Howard was the son of the late Irvin & Ocy Temple Antes. In service to his country, Howard served in the US Army in Korea and Japan. He married the love of his life, Helen Beck Antes on June 9, 1954 in East Point, PA. Together they shared a wonderful life and instilled strong values in their children and grandchildren. Active in his community, Howard was a longtime member of the Fassett Baptist Church, a member of the NRA, South Creek Northern Tier Sportsmen's Club, a life member of the South Creek Fire Department, and the Pine Ridge Gun Club. Howard is remembered for his kindness, helping hand and warm smile. DAVID A. AUSTIN

23, of Gillett RD 2, died Thursday, March 9, 1989 at the Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital, Elmira.  He was born Sep. 15, 1965 in Troy, Pa., the son of David R. and Eva Worthington Austin.  He was a member of the South Creek Sportsmen’s Club.  Mr. Austin was an avid bowler and he loved all outdoor sports.  He is survived by his parents, David and Eva Austin of Gillett RD 2; sisters, Mrs. Beverly Faulkner of Roaring Branch RD 1 and Mrs. Paul (Kathy) Roberts of Columbia Cross Roads RD 2; brothers and sisters-in-law, Francis and Linda Raplee of Gillett RD 2 and Preston and Brenda Raplee of Troy RD 3.  Several nieces, nephews; one great-nephew; several aunts and uncles and many special friends also survive.  Friends may call at the Vickery Funeral Home, Troy, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  The funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Vickery Funeral Home.  The Rev. MILTON ‘STUB’ AUSTIN passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 while listening to hymns and in the loving embrace of his niece. Stub was an example of how to live a simple life while sharing what little he had with anyone who needed it. He helped to shape many young men's lives by teaching them the value of hard work. He is survived by his siblings, Lynwood, Carroll, Marilyn, Mary, Marcia and Barbara; many nieces, nephews and longtime friends. AVERY -JOYCE ANN BERRY, age 87, of Gillett, Pennsylvania, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Bradford County Manor following declining health. Born on April 23, 1932 in Mosherville, Pennsylvania, Joyce was the daughter of the late, LaRue and Winifred Sterling Avery. She married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Berry on July 15, 1949 in Gillett, PA. In addition to “Dick” she is survived by her loving daughter and care taker, Pam (Jim) Updike; and a sister-in-law, Dora Anne Avery, Gillett, PA; five grandchildren, Shawna, Tara, Zach, Tiffany, and Zane; seven great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Trenton, Kailyn, Tayla, Madison, Marley and Noah; nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Debbie Berry Haxton; siblings, Winifred (Wayne) Harkness and LaRue Avery. Joyce was a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed her winters in Florida, car shows with “Dick” and shopping. She was employed for many years at American Silk Label as a secretary and was an active member of the Gillett Baptist Church. LAMAR W. ‘BERT’ AVERY.  Age 88, of Varney Hill Road, Cayuta, NY.  On June 7, 2004 was re-united with his wife who preceded him in death May 29, 2004.  They celebrated 70 wonderful years of life and love together, and now are “In God’s Care.”  LaMar was born December 12, 1915 in Lockwood, NY, the son of the late Mark and Hilda (Newberry) Avery.  “Bert” as he was affectionately known, is survived by his loving children, Llewellyn (Hannelore) Avery of Cayuta, NY, Charlene ( Ronald) Griffin also of Cayuta, NY, Daryl (Patricia) Avery of Ithaca, NY, Darla Shroyer of Millport, NY, Jocelyn Almon of Cayuta, NY; sister-in-law, Ona Lou Patterson of Gillett, PA; along with 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.  His daughters, Janyce Avery and Cheryl Avery; son, Larry Avery; two brothers and one sister predeceased “Bert”.  He was a member of the Sullivanville United Methodist Church.  In 1981, “Bert” retired from the Horseheads School District as custodian after several years of faithful and dedicated service.  In his earlier days he enjoyed hunting and bowling.  He received great pleasure out of gardening.  Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY, on Thursday, June 10, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m.  Funeral services celebrating his life will be held there on Friday at 11 a.m.  The Reverend Mari Rockwell will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Gillett Cemetery where “Bert” will be laid to rest next to his beloved Pauline.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to the Sullivanville United Methodist Church, 69 Old Sullivanville Road, Horseheads, NY in his memory.  A “Candle of Remembrance may be left for the family at www.olthof.com.  Elmira Star Gazette.

Gillett—Larue Bradford Avery, 30, died at his home here Wednesday night, Aug, 28, 1936. He was widely known as an ice company employee.  The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Baptist church by the Rev. George C. Burroughs of Pine City with burial in the Gillett Cemetery.  Surviving are his wife, Winifred; three children, Winifred Irene, Joyce Ann and Larue B. Avery, Jr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Avery and a sister, Mary, of Lockwood, N.Y.; two brothers, John Mark and LaMarr, both of Gillett.

A lifelong resident of the Gillett, PA community died, Monday morning, October 5, 2009 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 75. Born on April 9, 1934 in Wells Township, PA, LaRue was the son of the late LaRue & Winifred Sterling Avery. He married Dora Ann May on September 4, 1953 and they recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. LaRue was employed by Fairway Springs for 23 years and retired as a supervisor. A devoted family man, he enjoyed caring for his family and his home. LaRue cherished the many winters he spent in Florida and just being near his beloved, Dora Ann. He was outgoing and enjoyed making people laugh. He was an active member at the Fassett Baptist Church. Surviving is his loving family, wife Dora Ann May Avery, Gillett, PA; their two sons, Randy (Mary Ellen) Avery and Rodney (Sandra) Avery all from Mooresville, NC; grandchildren, Jenna (Chris) Close, Chad, Kyle and Kelli Avery, Brian (Robin) Picarazzi, and Anthony Picarazzi; great grandchildren, Sophia Close, Emma and Ella Picarazzi; sisters, Winifred Harkness and Joyce ("Dick") Berry; sister-in-law, Leone Chambers all from Gillett, PA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and church friends. (Local News)  The remains of Tenike Avery who died last Friday morning at the home in Canton of his daughter, were taken to Gillett where funeral services were held Sunday morning.  He had been ill several months.  Besides four sons and three daughters, he leaves three brothers and a sister—Alvin of New Albany; Levi of Covington; Clarence and Mrs. Delila Peters of East Troy.  TGR 1915

HARKNESS longtime resident of Gillett, Pa., was born Nov. 6, 1926 in Elmira, the daughter of the late LaRue Bradford and Winifred Irene (Sterling) Avery, and went home to be with her Lord on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the age of 88. She was a very devoted, loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Wayne C. Harkness; daughter, Sharon H. Mrs. Winifred (Winnie) Avery Wilson, 82, Gillett, died Monday, December 24, 1990. Winnie was a long-time resident of Gillett. I really enjoy the tri county website and visit it every so often to see if there is anything new. I thought maybe I could make a small contribution with some of my family information.  My gr- gr- grandfather, Lewis Jackson Ayres, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Bradford County 14 May 1842. He was in Company C Fifth New York Heavy Artillery.In 1897 he left his home in Missouri to attend a G.A.R. convention in Gillett where he died on 29 September. He is buried in Gillett.

 Earl L. Barto, 50, of Gillett, PA died Monday, September 5, 1994 at home. He was born November 3, 1943 in Windber, PA. Mr. Barto was a member of the South Creek Lions Club; the Fassett Grange; the Kingston, PA VFW Post No. 283; the Troy American Legion Post 49. He served with the Special Forces with the US Army and received many decorations and awards. BEECHEY William Kempfer "Bill"
A longtime resident of the Fassett, PA community died on Tuesday morning, December 1, 2009 at the age of 80. Born on February 22, 1929 in Nantyglo, PA Bill was the son of the late William Sr. & Ada Kempfer Beechey. In service to his country, Bill served in the United States Navy from 1948-1952. He married the love of his life, Donna Greenough on July 4, 1952 in Elmira. Mr. Beechey was employed by Westinghouse for over 37 years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Fassett Baptist Church and was very active with youth where he coached the church's softball team. An avid outdoorsman, Bill was a member of the South Creek Rod and Gun Club and loved fishing and hunting. He held a passion for photography and was well known by his readers as the Bradford County correspondent for the Star Gazette. Surviving is his beloved family, wife and companion, Donna Greenough Beechey, formerly of Fassett, and presently of Sayre, PA; their children, Danielle (Wayne) Tice, Gillett, PA; Rod (Beth) Beechey, Midlothian, TX; seven grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Rose, Nathan (Cynthia) Beechey, Ryan Beechey, Justin (Adri) Beechey, Matthew Beechey, Adam (Keiko) Tice and Ashley "Ash" (Lindsey Groom) Tice; three great grandchildren, Noah Beechey, Patrick Tice and Maria Tice; sister, Doris (Orley) Ford, Fassett, PA; brother-in-law, Paul (Helen) Greenough, Stow, OH; sister-in-law, Betty Greenough, Bend OR; nieces, nephews and many cherished friends.  John E. Benson, 77, Gillett RR 2, PA died Wednesday, June 1, 1994 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sayre. John was a member of the Fassett Baptist Church and a member of the Bradford County and Chemung Valley Senior Citizens.  He was a former employee of the Remington Rand and Ward LaFrance from which he retired. BOUGHTON  -   Mrs. Ethilinda M. Coe.
Mrs. Ethlinda M. Coe died in South Creek, March 6th, 1903 aged 69 years and 15 days.  Mrs. Coe was the daughter of Daniel and Maria Boughton, and was born in Columbia township, Feb. 19th, 1834.  Her parents and family moved to South Creek when she was twelve years old where she resided most of the time after this until her decease.  She was married by Rev. E. Lockwood, to Caleb E. Coe, Mar. 1st, 1853.  When sixteen years of age she became a member of the South Creek Baptist Church, retaining her membership until the time of her death.  Thus it will be seen that her married life covered a period of 50 years and her religious life full 53 years.  Mrs. Coe was a woman of unblemished character, a true wife and affectionate mother and was held in high esteem by those who knew her long and well.  Her funeral was held on the 8th inst. At the Gillett Baptist church and she was buried in the old cemetery near by.  In harmony with her request, the services was led by Rev. T. Mitchell of Troy, assisted by Rev. P. Reynolds of Gillett.  A large concourse of people was present.  Her husband, five sons, eight grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters survive her.  The sons are Scott, Judd, Judson, Benjamin and Montgomery.  These with one brother bore her to her final resting place and laid her tenderly down by the side of other dear relatives who had been called to their eternal home. Age 87, formerly of Gillett and Sayre, died on Saturday, March 22, 2008, with her daughters by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Wilkes Sr. in 2002, and a sister, Grace Davis in 2005. Brooks, 71, of Gillett (Doty Hill RD) died January 11, 1987.  Mr. Brooks was a member of the Chemung Valley Lodge No 360 F and A M, Corning Consistory and life member of the A F of L.  He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dr. James Wilcox of Milan, PA; sons and daughter-in-law, James Jr. and Marion Brooks of Doty Hill RD, Wellsburg, NY,  Dennis L. Age 90, of Gillett, PA entered into the arms of His Lord and into his eternal home, promised to him, {John 14:2 "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."} on Friday, September 13, 2013. He was born on March 8, 1923, the son of the late Leroy and Pearl (Lewis) Brown. His loving wife of 64 years, Iva E. "Betty" Brown preceded him in death on August 20, 2011. He is survived by daughters, Linda D. (Raymond) MacAuslan of Gillett, PA; Kathleen A. (Mickey) Millen of Gillett, PA; sons, James L. (Virginia) Brown of Loysville, PA; Gerald E. (Faith) Brown of Gadsden, TN; eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; sisters, Marian Campagna of Lindley, NY; Alice Ballard of Horseheads, NY. Lewis was a long-time faithful member of the Mosherville Bible Church and the Gillett Senior Citizens Organization. He was a man of God, devoted to his Church for many years where he was the Sunday School Superintendent and taught Child Evangelism Release Time Classes. He enjoyed his time with the Sunday School and he was always concerned about children. He will be remembered for his quite spirit, his faithfulness to prayer, patience and his "slow to answer" responses. Lewis had a deep caring and abiding love for all of his family and he expressed and showed that caring love daily. He loved to have his family come home for meals and loved to share ice cream with his friends. He loved picnics and was always ready to leave for one. He enjoyed hunting, farming, especially haying, riding his 1948 Ford tractor and milking the cows. He had a passion for old tractors and for his ice cream. He was a WW II Veteran of the US Army Air Corp and served his country in Trinidad and Puerto Rico. He worked for many years at the Remington Rand and after its closing as a welder. He could fix anything and everything with his special "cobbling" skills. a longtime resident of the Fassett, Pa. community died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011 at Robert Packer Hospital, where he had been receiving care, at the age of 72.  He was born on Feb. 23, 1939 in Elmira, son of the late William and Ida Hodge Coats.  He was employed for many years by W. M. Spiegel & Sons, Elmira.  Allen's interests included fishing, hunting and welding.  Surviving are his children, Kathy Wytrwa; and Allen (Krista) Coats, Beaver Dams; Gerald (Tammy) Coats, Fla; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a sister, Caroline Drew; brothers, Wayne (Jean) Coats, Glen (Lisa) Coats and Robert (Nancy) Coats; step children Sharon Coly-Herbert with husband, William K. Bernice Congdon Sullivan Smith, a longtime resident of Gillett who made her home with her daughter's family in Spencer, N.Y., for the last 5 1/2 years, went to her repose to await the calling of our Lord on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. She was born Nov. 19, 1908, in Gillett, a daughter of the late Bert and Edna Queal Congdon. Bernice had a passion for flower gardening and left each home she had lovelier than when she came there. She is survived by two sisters, Marie (Lynn) Updike of Gillett and Pauline (Bert) Avery of Cayuta, N.Y.; four children, Norman (Joyce) Sullivan of Candor, N.Y.; Edna Jean (Robert) Molyneaux of Spencer, N.Y.; Beverly Potter of Candor, N.Y., and Shirley (Gary) Nagy of California; three stepdaughters, Arlene (Phil) Jennings of Monroeton, Janice Smith of Phoenix and Vorene Stamp of Gillett; 19 grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Edgar in 1942 and two loving husbands, Eugene Sullivan of Candor, N.Y., with whom she had four children, and Leaman Smith of Gillett, to whose daughters she was stepmother for 41 years. She was a member of the Fassett Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher and a supporter of the Elmira Christian Center. She was a member of the Fassett Grange and the Order of the Eastern Star.  Fayette E. Congdon, 83, of Mansfield, PA and formerly of Gillett, PA, died February 20, 1990 at Troy Community Hospital. He was born October 8, 1906 in Gillett, PA, the son of Earl and Mayme Congdon. Mr. Congdon was a farmer and past master of the Fassett Grange, past president of the local Dairyman's League and was a forest fire warden for 35 years. Mr. Congdon was a retired farmer and had been a forest fire warden for 35 years. He was past president of the local Dairymen’s League and past master of Fassett Grange. Born Oct. 8, 1906 in Gillett, he was a son of Henry Earl and Mayme Saudey Congdon. Preceding him in death was a son, Robert Congdon, in 1973. Age 87, of Varney Hill Road, Cayuta, NY, went home to with her Lord on Saturday, May 29,2004, peacefully at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.  She was born March 29, 1917, in Gillett, PA, the daughter of the late James and Edna (Queal) Congdon.  On this date May 31st, 1934 in Pine City, NY, the Reverend Burrows married Pauline H. Congdon and LaMar W. “Bert” Avery.  They have celebrated 70 wonderful years of life and love together.  Pauline is survived by her loving husband, “Bert”; beloved children, Llewellyn (Hannelore) Avery of Cayuta, NY, Charlene (Ronald) Griffin of Cayuta, NY, Daryl (Patricia) Avery of Ithaca, NY, Darla Shroyer of Millport, NY, Jocelyn Almon of Cayuta, NY; sister, Ona Lou Patterson of Gillett, PA, along with 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  Her daughters, Janycee Avery and Cheryl Avery; son Larry Avery; two sisters; and one brother predeceased Pauline.  She was a member of the Sullivanville United Methodist Church.  Her green thumb enabled her to be an excellent gardener and expert flower grower.  She also enjoyed sewing and loved her “rocks”.  Her and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, from 4 to 7 p.m.  Funeral Services celebrating her life will be held there at the conclusion of calling hours which are at 7 p.m.  The Reverend Mari Rockwell will officiate.  Interment will take place privately at the convenience of her family in the Gillett Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Sullivanville United Methodist Church, 69 Old Sullivanville Road Horseheads, NY in her memory.

COOPER Anna Mae WELCH, age 88, of Gillett, PA (South creek Township) died Noveber 1, 1999.  Anna Mae was born October 3, 1911 in Bentley Creek, PA, a daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Cooper.  She graduated from East Smithfield High School and was a life-long member of the Gillett Baptist Church and Berean Class.  She served as tax collector for South Creek Township for several years, followed by retiring from the Troy School District in 1975.  She is survived by her husband, Ralph Welch; son and daughter-in-law, Clifton and Carolyn Welch of Naples FL; sister, Alice Inman of Taccoa, GA; a grandson and five step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a daughter Carolyn Ann Welch; sister, Frances Wood; and brothers, Bert Cooper, Erwin Cooper and Lester Cooper.  Funeral services were held at the Gillett Baptist Church on November 6 with the Revs. Robert Weaver and Charles Root officiating followed by interment in their cemetery.  Arrangements were made by the Olthof Funeral Home in Elmira, NY.  Contributions may be sent to the Gillett Baptist Church, c/o Nancy Oldroyd, RR 2, Box 6, Gillett, PA 16925.

GLENN L. CRAIG
 Glenn L. Craig, 71, Gillett, died June 18, 1991 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He was born November 14, 1919, son of Dalson and Lena Kerrick Craig. Glenn was a lifelong resident of Gillett.  He retired in 1974 after 33 years of service with Bendix.  Glenn was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church for 53 years and was active at the Gillett Senior Center. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Emily Seymour Craig; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn A. and Gail Craig of Melbourne, FL and Ronald and Becky Craig of East Troy; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Hodder of Gillett, Carolyn and Harold (Bud) Bentley of Troy RD 1 and Darla and Neil Moore of Wellsburg, NY; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandsons; several nieces and nephews.  J.L. "Poss" Craig, 81, of Troy RR 3, PA died Friday, May 1, 1992 at the Troy Community Hospital. He was born February 9, 1911 in Pulaski, VA, the son of Julius Luck and Octavia Ackers Craig. He resided the last 20 years on Lookout Road in Troy Township. Poss worked for Tennessee Gas Pipeline, a division of Tenneco, for 25 years, retiring in June of 1972.  He first worked as a welder, then as a foreman and then retired as a superintendent. He was a former member of the Troy Lions Club; the F & AM of Campbellsville, KY; and regularly attended Gillett Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Alice B. Craig; son and daughter-in-law, James R. "Sonny" and Carole Craig of Easton, PA; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne M. and F.M. "Woody" Oldroyd of Gillett; granddaughter and husband, Tammi and George Denger of Horsham, PA; grandsons, Michael Craig of Easton, Jason and Joshua of Gillett; three sisters; two brothers; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held May 4 at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy with the Rev. Virginia Culver Maynard, 77, a lifelong resident of Gillett, peacefully passed into rest Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, Elmira, N.Y. Virginia was born the beloved daughter of the late Ulysses and Jennie Queal Culver on Nov. 14, 1924, in Gillett. Virginia was the loving wife of the late Rexford L. Maynard. They shared 57 loving years filled with priceless memories. Those close to Virginia knew her best for her love and devotion to her loving husband, Rex, and the family they shared. Devoting all her love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was what she loved the most. Virginia always made time for leading her family to a strong faith in the Lord. That is why she could also devote so much time to her Church family, whom she loved, at the Fassett Baptist Church. Virginia served her church as past trustee, deaconess, flower committee member, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and organizer of most church functions and dinners. Virginia also had a wonderful love of the community that surrounded her and Rex. Early on, they saw that the area would be better served with a firemen's auxiliary. She and other community members organized the first South Creek Volunteer Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Her devotion to her community did not stop there. Virginia and Rex also spent many hours with the South Creek Volunteer Ambulance Squad. This was a task she never minded because she was always able to be next to Rex. They also loved the many friends they made through the years. They were involved with the South Creek Senior Citizens Center and Fassett Grange. Throughout her lifetime, Virginia Maynard made a loving mark on both the communities of Fassett and Gillett. Though Virginia has joined those whom she has missed, her accomplishments and love will never fade. We will all miss her. Virginia is survived by her devoted children, Janice and Gary Finnerty of Gouverneur, N.Y., Pat Brewer of Gillett, Carlton and Jackie Maynard of Waverly, N.Y., Donna and Wendell Harkness of Gillett; 18 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sister, Aelicia and David Byork of Wolcott, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Carmela Culver of Gillett; daughter-in-law, Marjorie Brock of Rockingham, N.C.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Lynn and Ruth Maynard and Lester and Bertha Maynard, all of Gillett. Virginia is predeceased by her husband, Rexford L. Maynard; sons, Kenneth and Richard Maynard; granddaughter, Kathy Chapman; great-grandson, Matthew Hammond; father, Ulysses F. Culver; mother, Jennie Queal Culver; and brothers, Ulysses R. and Arthur H. Culver. CUNNINGHAM –MRS. IRENE GOODRICH TILLINGHAST, 78, of Gillett RD 3, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 1987 very unexpectedly.  She was born Feb. 27, 1909 in Canton, Pa. the daughter of Frederick Elmer and Mary Melissa Smith Cunningham.  She was a member of the Fassett Baptist Church, a member of Fassett Grange and a member of Excelsior Chapter No. 323, O.E.S.  Mrs. Tillinghast was a retired employee of Iszard’s.   She was very active in the South Creek Lions Club.  She is survived by her husband of 15 years.  Frank A. Tillinghast; children, Ronald Goodrich of Texas; Arthur Goodrich of California; Gary and Laura Webster of Fassett, Pa.; Margaret Jean Tillinghast of Elmira Heights, eight grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Eleanore Campanelli of Pine City; brother, James Cunningham of Horseheads; several nieces and nephews.  The funeral and committal service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, with the Rev. DALTON –AGNES ELIZABETH (DALTON) SAUNDERS, age 97, of Gillett, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 8, 2018, at the Robert Packer Hospital. She was always known as “Elizabeth.” She was born on Nov. 12, 1920, in Harford County, Maryland. She was the eldest daughter of Charles and Ethel Dalton. She married LaRue Saunders on July 9, 1941, at the Troy Baptist Church in Troy, Pennsylvania. LaRue and Elizabeth were married for 44 years and resided on the family farm in Gillett. Together, they raised two sons and three daughters. She is survived by her son, David (Barbara) Saunders; her daughter, Shirley (James) Call; her sister, Mary Ellen (Daniel) O’Neil; her brothers, Robert (Janet) Dalton, John Thomas (Barbara) Dalton; son-in-law, David Kendall; daughter-in-law, Cleo Osgood; nine grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, LaRue; daughter, Bette Kennedy; daughter, Linda Kendall; son, Ronald Saunders; siblings, Charles “Buddy” Dalton and Lucille Hamby. DAVIS Fred C-74, of Austinville died Saturday morning (1949) Mr. Davis was a lifelong resident of the Austinville community, a member of the Baptist Church and the Odd Fellows lodge there. He is survived by his wife, Ida Wolfe Davis; two daughters, Mrs. Lee Richmond of Wyalusing and Mrs. William Brown of Elmira; two sons, Lorenzo of Elmira and Frank of Bentley Creek; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The body is at the Soper & Vickery funeral home in Troy and will be taken to Austinville Baptist Church for services Tuesday morning. Rev. Glenn Dewey will officiate with burial in Gillett Cemetery.

Fred C. DAVIS, aged 74, died at his home in Austinville, Saturday, June 25, 1949. He is survived by his wife, Ida Wolfe Davis; two daughters Mrs. Lee Richmond, Wyalusing and Mrs. William Brown, Elmira; two sons Lorenzo, Elmira and Frank, Bentley Creek. The funeral was held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Austinville Baptist Church, Rev. Glen Dewey officiated with burial in Gillett Cemetery.

LaRUE G. DECKER
 LaRue G. Decker, 61, of Gillett, PA died Wednesday, September 2, 1992 at the Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira, NY. He was born September 24, 1930 in Chemung, NY, the son of Charles and Cora Keenan Decker. Mr. Decker was a member and served on the board of directors of the South Creek Northern Tier Sportsman Club.  He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, having served with the US Navy. Mr. Decker was a former construction worker and was formerly employed with General Electric in Elmira. He was a member of the Gillett Grange, and the National Rifle Association.  He enjoyed shooting trap and was an avid hunter.  He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Clarabelle Updike Decker; sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Diane Decker of Natural Bridge, NY, David and Tanya Decker of Gillett and Stephen and Cherri Decker of Gillett; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Howard Wheeler of Laurel Hill, FL and Valerie and Tim Clark of Gillett; a daughter, Vanessa Decker, at home; three grandsons and three granddaughters; sisters, Harriett Barber of Troupsburg, NY and Mrs. Lewis (Sally) Randall of Lockwood, NY; brother, Sidney Decker of Albany, NY; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Vickery Funeral Home in Troy on September 5 with the Rev. Donald Rockwell officiating with military honors accorded.  Burial was to be at the Gillett Cemetery. HARVEY MARTIN DEERY, 67, Knoxville, PA, formerly of Gillett and Oakboro, NC, went home to be with the Lord, December 12, 2003, at the Arnot Ogden Medical center in Elmira, NY.  Born on November 8, 1936, in Elmira, he was the son of the later Harry and Jane (Bellows) Deery.  Mr. Deery owned and operated Harvey’s Crane Service in Elmira for many years until his retirement.  He was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church and the Oakboro Baptist Church.  He was active in the youth ministries of both churches and enjoyed his time serving as a Sunday School teacher.  Surviving are three children; Christine Shepardson, Dundee, NY; Philip (Jaime) Deery, Savannah, GA; and James Deery, Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Jason Linsey, Michael and Kelley Shepardson, and Philip and Taylor McCall Deery; two brothers, Harry (Ruth) Deery, Jr., Shortsville, NY; Clifford (Dawn) Deery, Elmira, NY; two sisters, Pauline (David) Orr, Albemarlo, NC; and Helen (Bernard) Tomko, Lake Villa, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Lois on November 17, 2003; a sister, Jane Rice; and brother Kelly Deery.  A memorial service was held December 16 at the Gillett Baptist Church with the Rev. DENMARK –FERN D. AMEIGH, 86, of the Carteton Nursing Home, Wellsboro, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1995.  She was born April 29, 1908, in Van Etten, N.Y., the daughter of Floyd and Ada Ellis Denmark.  She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church.  Mrs. Ameigh was formerly employed with Bendix Co. in Elmira, retiring in 1963.  She is survived by three stepsons and one stepdaughter; a special niece, Alberta Freeman of Millport, N.Y.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and all her special friends.  She was predeceased by her husband, George Ameigh on Dec. 10, 1978.  There will be no visitation.  The graveside service will be held at the Gillett Cemetery on Saturday, Jan. 14, 1995, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. DILLON -  Arthur H. Dillon - (1929) 74 years of age, was found in an orchard near the home of his daughter, Mrs. [Elizabeth] Fred Tillinghast, at Fassett, last Friday with a deep gash in his throat, done in a fit of despondency caused by ill health. He was removed to the Arnot-Ogden hospital in Elmira where he died Monday night. Mr. Dillon has made his home here with his son, Earle Dillon for several years and was a highly respected citizen. He is survived by three daughters-Mrs. Tracy Wilson, of this place, Mrs. Fred Tillinghast of Fassett, and Mrs. Charles Faulkner of Gillett, one son, Earle Dillon, a brother, William Dillon of Chenango Bridge and a sister, Mrs. Sophia Joralemon of Cambridge Springs, Pa. DUNBAR –HAZEL MARIE (DUNBAR) HARKNESS died April 24, 2004, quietly within the loving circle of her family.  Born on August 2, 1921 she was the daughter of Frank and Bessie Dunbar of East Troy, PA.  After graduating from Troy High School she married her high school sweetheart, Merton L. Harkness.  Theirs was a love affair that never ended after he predeceased her on October 10, 1995.  The driving force of her life was her devotion to her husband and her family and guiding them throughout their lives.  This was exemplified by the love returned to her by her children and their families.  Mrs. Harkness was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church and was a member of Grange for over 50 years.  Surviving are her four children, daughter, Kathleen (Bruce) Staudt, Austinville; son, Jay (Diane) Harkness, Gillett; daughter, DeEtta (Terry) Shafer, LeRaysville; daughter, Julia (Larry) Congdon, Gillett; 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A loving grandmother she never missed a chance to show her love and support.  She is also survived by a family friend Milton (Stub) Austin.  She was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.  The funeral service was held April 27 from the Gerald Vickery Funeral Home, Troy, with the Reverend Kenneth Marple officiating.  Burial was in the Gillett Cemetery where she rejoined her loving husband, Mert, in eternity.  Memorial contributions can be made to the Gillett Baptist Church or the Austinville Union Church.  –Canton Independent Sentinel.

 

EBERLY Richard H. "Rick" Eberly

59, of Gillett, Pa., died on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.  Family and friends are welcome to gather from 10-11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Gerald W. Vickery Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 110 West Main St., Troy, Pa. The funeral service to honor Rick's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Gillett Cemetery.  Rick was born on Nov. 30, 1951 in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Harold and Marian (Kauck) Eberly. He was self-employed as an auto mechanic in the Gillett, Pa., area for several years, and was a member of the Elks-Lacey Lodge in Forked River, N.J. Rick enjoyed the outdoors; he loved hunting, fishing, and boating on Seneca Lake. He was also an avid NASCAR fan and liked watching shows about cars on the TV.  Most important to Rick was his family. His family includes: his companion Mary E. Grover of Gillett, Pa.; his daughters, Heather (Steven) Liebers of Horsham, Pa. and Jennifer (Timothy) McConnell of Southhampton Pa.; Mary's children, Mary (Christopher) Logan of Alberta, Canada and Amy (Rinaldo) Rossi II of Telford, Pa.; his nine grandchildren; his brothers and sisters, Jack (Joan) Eberly of Feasterville, Pa., Diane (Lenny) Wisneski of Hillsboro, N.J., Nancy (John) Bagliani of Hammonton, N.J., and Kurt (Jackie) Eberly of Virginia Beach, Va.; along with several nieces and nephews. ERNEST Iva E. (Betty) Brown

Age 90, Gillett, PA, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 20, 2011. She was born on January 15, 1921, the daughter of the late Oscar S. and Jennie (Houser) Ernest. Survived by loving husband of 64 years, Lewis A. Brown; daughters, Linda D. (Raymond) MacAuslan, Kathleen A. Baker; sons, James L. (Virginia) Brown and Gerald E. (Faith) Brown; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; sister, Flora (John) Newton; brother, Kenneth (Kathryn) Ernest; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers, Lawrence, James and Robert Ernest. Long-time member of Mosherville Bible Church and the Gillett Senior Citizens Organization. She was a woman of faith, devoted to her church where for many years she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Child Evangelism Release Time classes. She had a gift of story-telling and enjoyed using Flannel Graph to illustrate Bible stories. She sang in the church choir for many years. Betty was also a leader of the 4-H Stitch and Chat club. She was adventurous, a great Pennsylvania Dutch cook, and she enjoyed canning and freezing fruits, vegetables, jellies and pickles. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. Jack R. Fields, 60, of Fassett, PA died Wednesday, April 27, 1994 at home. Jack worked 30 years for Kennedy Valve Inc. in Elmira, NY.  He was a member of the NRA. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Audrey L. RICHARD CHARLES 'DICK' FREEMAN of Lawrenceville - Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, age 82, a longtime resident of Lawrenceville, PA, went to be with his Lord and Savior suddenly on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at home. Dick was born on July 2, 1937 in Canton, PA. He grew up in Granville, PA and graduated from Troy High School in 1956. He met Christine Updike at the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Elmira, NY. They were married on May 4, 1957. Dick was skilled at a variety of occupations including carpentry and construction, auto body repair, auto mechanics, mobile home hauling, weights and measures inspection, and more. In 1986, he founded R.O. Services, an optical comparator calibration services company, and was active as a technician in this field for over 30 years. Dick served on the Northern Tioga School District (Pennsylvania) board for 20 years. For over 60 years, he was a member of the Pentecostal Tabernacle, later renamed Elmira Christian Center, of Elmira, NY where he served for many years as a board member and usher. He painted most of the buses the Pentecostal Tabernacle used (red and yellow) for their bus ministry. Dick was a fan of traditional Southern Gospel quartet music, attended numerous concerts, and became long-term friends with many of its artists. He mastered the art of joke and storytelling and was hard to beat at a game of checkers. He bridged the miles between family and friends by maintaining regular telephone contact. He was also a long-term member of the NRA and an avid listener to Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. FURMAN Mary E. (Furman) Harkness
Mary Furman Harkness, of Bentley Creek, Pa., died
at the Bradford County Manor in Burlington on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, from complications of Parkinson's. She was 88 years old.  Mary was a lifelong resident of Gillett, Pa., where she ran a dairy farm in partnership with her husband, Dana J. Harkness, who died in January 1989. She is survived by: her six children, Marletta Harkness of Long Beach, Calif., Butch and Barbara Harkness, Wendell and Donna Harkness, Bradley and Rebecca Harkness, Brenton Harkness and Nathan and Carol Harkness, all of Gillett, Pa.; grandchildren LaRue Harkness, LaVerne Harkness, LaVonne Harkness, Loren Harkness, Lorinda Harkness, Clint Harkness, Jodi Harkness, Chad Sterling, Marsi Hammond, Daniel Harkness, Scott Harkness, Jenna Harkness, Macy Harkness, Alori Harkness, Thomas Harkness and Chelsea Harkness; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Norman Furman; sister-in-law Shirley Furman; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Harriett was predeceased by her parents, husband Dana Harkness, a brother Gordon Furman, and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Born Mary Emmavieve Furman on May 5, 1922, to Howard and Bertha Furman, who died in 1981 and 1989, respectively, Mary worked on her father's farm in Checkerville and attended local schools. Her brother, Gordon C. Furman, of Waverly, N.Y., was a building contractor in this area and died August 2009. Mary graduated from Troy High School and she and Dana were married in January 1943, after which they worked the farm on Thompson Hill East of Gillett for the next 46 years, raising prize registered Jersey cattle. After Dana's death, Mary ran the farm with her sons, retiring to Bentley Creek in the mid-1990s. Mary excelled at homemaking and was an expert cook, baker, seamstress and gardener. The family still hears praises for the four loaves of fresh bread Mary baked three times a week for almost 60 years. She also appreciated music, poetry and politics and encouraged her children and grandchildren in their educational and business pursuits. Mary laughed easily, was always busy and was especially good with children who could always count on cookies, a meal, an interested word and a warm smile from her. She attended Gillett Baptist Church when she could.  Family and friends are invited to her graveside services that will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at in the Gillett Cemetery, Route 14, Gillett, Pa., with Pastor Alan Goss and Pastor Charles Root officiating. age 82, of Gillett, died on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012. She was born on March 11, 1930 in Sayre, to the late Jesse and Bertha (Decker) Gardner. Bertha is survived by her husband, Lester Maynard of Gillett; sons Rev. Donald (Edith) Maynard of Canisteo, N.Y., Melvin (Norreen) Maynard of Simpsonville, S.C. and Bruce Maynard of Gillett; daughter, Beverly (Lloyd) Hite of Canton; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Bertha worked at Willard State Hospital and then at the A&P Plant for many years. GATES William D

Age 63 of Gillett, PA. He was born August 24, 1949 in Elmira, son of the late James and Ruth (Nero) Gates and died Friday, June 21, 2013 at home after a brave fight with lung cancer. He was predeceased by his son Frank and is survived by his soul mate and wife, Ellen Gates; daughters Melanie (Paul) Gates of ND and Tiffanie (Chris) Coleman of PA; two sons by a previous marriage James and Bill Gates, both of PA; 7 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; sister Cindee (Jeff) Wray of PA; stepbrothers Charles (Shinobu) Meador, Tim (Patty) Meador and Mike (MaryAnn) Meador; sisters-in-law Elaine Tenny and Carol (Pete) Dennison; brothers-in-law Joe (Cheri) and Wes Jones; best friends Rich and JoAnn Packard, who were always there for him no matter what he needed. Bill graduated from Troy High School in 1967 where he was well known for playing baseball and being the star pitcher. After graduating, he went to work for Schanbacher Masonry, where he worked for many years. He then relocated to Syracuse, NY and was employed with Hueber Breuer Contractors until 1993 when he relocated back to Gillett, PA. Bill and Ellen bought the family business, Meador's Personal Care Home, and together ran the home until their retirement this year. Bill loved being a grandfather and spending time with his grandkids. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He loved pulling pranks on his friends and family. He could fix anything, build anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. He was an old fashioned guy who believed in manners, values and helping one another. He loved Elvis and could always be heard singing a song or listening to his music. He and his wife Ellen were best friends and enjoyed antiquing junking and spending time fixing up their home. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family, but we know he will wait for us in heaven. It was Bill's request that there be no services. He will be cremated and laid to rest in Gillett Cemetery at a later date. His family gives a special thanks to the Oncology staff and Dr. Lash for their care; special nurse Sylvia, Cookes Pharmacy, Dr. Husband and Phoebe Cole. GETTER –DOROTHY LOUISE (GETTER) SHATTUCK, 85 of Gillett, formerly of Miamisburg, Ohio died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at her home.  She was born April 22, 1916 in Amanda, Ohio to the late Rev. Dr. Herman C. Getter and Mabel Barr Getter.  Dorothy was the eldest of five children.  She graduated from high school in New Philadelphia, Ohio in 1934 and from Wittenburg University, Springfield, Ohio in 1938 with an A.B. degree, majoring in English and Home Economics, with minors in Latin and History.  She also did graduate work at Ohio State.  Dorothy taught high school in Mineral city, Lewisburg, Brookville, Jefferson Township and Miamisburg – all Ohio schools.  During World War II she served for 28 months in the Women’s Reserve of the Coast Guard as a Lieutenant (jg) in the SPARS, taking training at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.  Dorothy was stationed in New York City during the war as a SPAR barracks officer.  It was in New York City that she met her husband, Arthur Victor Shattuck, with whom she celebrated over 44 years of marriage before his passing in 1989.  After the war, they made a home near Dayton, Ohio.  They had one son, Robert who survives them.  Louise was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and was always active in all the churches she attended through the years, serving in various capacities.  When Bet Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was organized in 1955 by two of Ohio’s State officers, she was one of 26 charter members and served as the chapter’s first secretary.  Through the years, Dorothy was chairman of or a member of various committees.  She also served as second and first vice-presidents and as president from 1974-1976.  In 1976 Dorothy and her family moved to Pennsylvania.  After getting settled in a home in the country, she transferred her membership from Ohio to Alpha Zeta Chapter in 1978 and enjoyed making new Delta Kappa Gamma friends.  Delta Kappa Gamma has been an important part of her life.  Dorothy was well known throughout the Troy area and was well liked and respected.  She is survived by her son, Robert Arthur Shattuck of Gillett; sisters, Martha A. Smyth of Dana Point, Calif. and Barbara Hanley of Orange, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Mariam Getter Rud of Toledo, Ohio and Nellie Brown of Owego, N.Y.; 11 nieces and nephews, their children and a number of cousins.  Friends are invited to call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gerald W. Vickery Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 110 W. GILLETT JOHN FRANKLIN
Hon. J.F. Gillett, a well-known citizen of this place, died Friday morning, June 7, 1895 at 7 o’clock, at his home in Elmira, aged 78 years. The remains were brought to this place for burial. The funeral was held at the church on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Rev. St John of Elmira preached the sermon, Rev Joel Jewell of Troy offering prayer & Rev. W.A. Grover reading Scripture lesson. Mr. Gillett took an active interest, even in his old age, in all the moral, social, political & religious issues of the day- advocating by precept & example temperance & sobriety, & taking an active interest in whatever tended to promote a healthy social improvement, diversion, amusement or recreation. The home of Mr. & Mrs. Gillett was one of the most pleasant in the town & their hospitality unbounded. A visit there was regarded as a holiday by young & old, & their memory will long be cherished by those who have so many times received their generous welcome. He was engaged largely in lumbering & dairying.

WILLIAM L. ‘BILL’ GORDON SR. age 92, formerly of the Gillett, PA; Elmira, NY; and Orlando, FL communities passed away Wed. May 17, 2017 in Wellsboro after living a long, full and happy life. Born on Apr. 28, 1925 in Gillett, PA; Bill was the son of the late, Merton & Jane Lewis Gordon. He served his country during WWII in the US Army. Bill was employed for over 30 years by Farr Motors, Elmira as an auto mechanic. He was a past member of the Gillett and Baptist Churches. A man of many interests, Bill enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and was a life member of the VFW Post 5655. Surviving is his loving family, sons, William L. Jr. (Doris) Gordon, Wellsboro, PA; Tom J.  Eloise L. Rought, 69, of Millerton, PA died Thursday, April 7, 1994. She was a member of the Gillett Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Remington-Rand in Elmira. She is survived by her husband, Millard Rought; daughter and son-in-law, Rosemaree and Keith Clark of Campbell, NY; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Kim Rought of Warren, OH; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Emma Stickler of Millerton, PA. Funeral services were held April 12 at the Gillett Baptist Church with the Rev. GORDON Ruth E. Maynard

age 89, a lifelong member of the Gillett community, died Monday morning at the Bradford County Manor. Ruth was the daughter of the late Earl and Essie (Swartwood) Gordon. She was born April 21, 1923, in Elmira, N.Y. Ruth is survived by her loving husband and friend of 65 years, Lynn D. Maynard of Gillett,; son Gary Maynard of Gillett; granddaughter Shawna (Brendon) Stoner of Atco, N.J.; two great-grandsons, Riley, and Dylan Stoner; special cousin Ethel Thorp of Gillett; and close neighbors, Marvin and Collette Roberts of Gillett.  She is predeceased by her daughter, Linda Haxton in 1979.  Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, N.Y., from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14. GRIFFIN -FRANCES GRIFFIN UPDIKE, (SRGP 20878) A long time resident of Gillett, PA and the Bakercrest Home for the Elderly where she had resided for several years, died Sunday morning, Dec. 26, 2004 at the age of 92.  Born on October 1, 1912 in Tioga County, PA.  Frances was the daughter of George & Louise Barton Griffin.  She married Glenn Updike on March 17, 1939 in Gillett, PA and he predeceased her earlier this year on May 13, 2004 after 65 years of marriage.  Frances was a homemaker who was devoted to her husband and children, worked hard on the family farm, and raised her family to serve the Lord.  She was a founding member of the South Creek Evangelical Church, Wellsburg.  In earlier years she was employed as a telephone operator in Auburn, operated a beauty parlor in Gillett, PA and was employed for over 29 years with the Remington Rand here in Elmira.  Surviving is Frances’ loving sons and daughters-in-law, James and Margaret Updike, Pine City; Daniel and Evelyn Updike, Hamlin; five grandchildren, James (Cris) Updike; Amy (Bob) Atwater; Dr. Glenn Updike; Mattie (Joel) Zarpentine and Daniel (Caryn) Updike; four great-grandchildren, Eli, Jenna, “AJ” and Callie; nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was the sole survivor of her fourteen brothers and sisters.  Family and friends will be received at Caywood’s Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport on Thursday, December 30, 2004 from 11 a.m. 1 p.m.  Funeral services will follow the visitation at 1 p.m. with her pastor, the Reverend Bryan Kain officiating.  Interment will follow in the Updike Family Plot of Gillett Cemetery, Gillett, PA.  Memorials may be directed to the Bakercrest Home for the Elderly Activity Fund, RD2, Box 195, Millerton, PA for Frances’ fellow residents and friends.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Don Baker and his wonderful staff of Bakercrest for all the comfort and care you brought our parents during their final years.  May God Bless Each of You.  –Elmira Star Gazette.
