FRANKLIN

David Franklin b. 8 June 1749 (vr) Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Island son of Uriah Franklin and Abigail Colvin. The death of Uriah is recorded in the Maple Root Church of Coventry, Rhode Island. His will was made 17 Jun 1788 and probated 17 Oct 1791 Windham County, Connecticut. Voluntown is given as the place of residence in the Will and they resided in that portion of Voluntown that became Sterling in 1794 when Sterling was formed from Voluntown.

David Franklin m. Hannah Simmons b. before 1755. They were included in the 1774 Scituate, Rhode Island census with one male over age sixteen (b. before 1758), one male under age sixteen (b. 1758-74), one female over age sixteen (b. before 1758), and two females under age sixteen (b. 1758-74). David’s brother Uriah Franklin and other Franklin family members were enumerated on the same page. He is believed to be the David Franklin listed in Colonel Crary’s Rhode Island Regiment during the Revolutionary War. David was enumerated in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island in 1790 with one male of age sixteen and over (b. before 1774), three males under age sixteen (b. 1775-90), and four females in the household. Enumerated in Sterling, Windham County, Connecticut in 1800 (Sterling was formed in 1794 from Voluntown) with one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1755), one female under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-90), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1755).

David appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. David Franklin is listed as age 65, farmer; along with John Franklin, age 25, farmer and David Franklin, Jr., age 30, farmer. David appears on the first assessment list of 1816 (compiled fall of 1815) of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Their residence was in eastern Jackson in the vicinity of where Daggett and Jobs Corners are now located. David is not enumerated on the 1820 census of Jackson, but appears on the 1820 assessment list (compiled fall of 1819) as well as the 1821 and 1822 assessment lists. The 1820 census is only two pages for Jackson Township and a name is cut off at the bottom of the first page. By tabulation this household had both a male and a female of age forty-five and over. Further analysis of the forty households of Jackson Township in 1820 indicates that a little over half of the households resided in that portion that became Rutland Township, which had not yet been created. Those on the first page lived in present Rutland and those on the second page in present Jackson. It is not known if the household that can’t be identified at the bottom of the first page was in present Rutland or Jackson. David appears on the 1823 and 1825 assessment lists (1824 is missing). There was a David Franklin who located in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York between 1823 and 1825. Jackson Township residents Reuben Daggett, Jr., and Jane Briggs, and Eliphas Lafferty and Mary Gallea and near neighbors of David and Hannah while in Jackson had settled in Freedom about 1821. David and Hannah perhaps removed to Villenova, Chautauqua County, New York, which borders Arkwright in the same county where son David Jr., and family were enumerated in 1830 and daughter Hannah Weaver and family resided.

5.  David Franklin, Jr., b. 23 Apr 1786 Windham County, Connecticut.
6.  John Franklin b. c. 1788.
7.  daughter b. 1785-90 (1790 census).
8.  Ruth Franklin b. 14 Nov 1790 Sterling, Connecticut.

Second Generation:
2.  Mary Franklin b. June 1772 m. perhaps Sept 1790 at Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island, Jacob Cummings b. 13 Feb 1766 (vr) Willington, Windham County, Connecticut son of Jonathan Commins and Hannah Tyler who removed with his parents to Whittington, Vermont when quite young where they lived a few years before removing to Pittstown, Albany County, New York. Jacob is related to have served in the American Revolution. Enumerated in Newport, Herkimer County, New York in 1810 with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), two females under age ten (b. 1801-1810), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). Jacob first appears on the 1818 assessment list (compiled late fall of 1817) of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Jacob appears in 1819 but then removed from the township. They returned and were enumerated in Jackson in 1830 with one male of age sixty and under age seventy (b. 1761-70) and one female of age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1771-80). Jacob applied for a pension (pension file W3517) for his service in the Revolutionary War and on 5 Sept 1832 deposed “he entered the service of the United States at Pittstown . . . in the latter part of April 1780 as a substitute for his father . . . marching to Fort Edward, Fort Ann, and Skeensborough, New York, where he was dismissed at then end of about a month. He enlisted again and various marches, alarms, and garrisons are mentioned, with total service of about fifteen months through the spring of 1782. Following the war, the 1832 deposition continues, Jacob moving from Pittstown, New York to Sterling, Connecticut, which was established in 1794 from Voluntown. This move perhaps took place about 1788. Jacob appears on the 1835 pension list, age 69, with an annual allowance of $80, which commenced 25 Jan 1833. Jacob and Mary were enumerated in the household of daughter Olive Osgood in 1840 in Rutland, pensioner, age 67 (actual age was about 74). Jacob d. 30 Apr 1844 Rutland. Mary deposed on 12 May 1846 that “she was married to Jacob Cummings in September 1790. . . that she was published in Voluntown, Connecticut but married in Coventry, Rhode Island.” Mary was enumerated in household of daughter Olive in Rutland in 1850 (dated October), age 78. 4.  Thomas Franklin b. 1775-84 cannot be positively identified as a son of David Franklin and Hannah Simmons, only that he appears for two years on the 1817 and 1818 assessment lists of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania where David Franklin, David Franklin, Jr., and John Franklin were residing. He is perhaps the Thomas Franklin enumerated in Russia, Herkimer County, New York in 1810 as Mary Franklin wife of Jacob Cummings was residing in Newport, Herkimer County. Enumerated with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), two females under ae ten (b. 1801-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84).

5.  David Franklin, Jr., b. 23 Apr 1786 m. Hannah Lafferty b. 10 June 1788 daughter of John Lafferty and Phebe Barton of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. David is believed to be the D. Franklin enumerated in Oneida County, New York in 1810 next to the household of E. Lafedy (Lafferty). David appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. David Franklin, Jr., is listed as age 30, farmer. David appears on the first assessment list in 1816 (compiled fall of 1815) of Jackson Township. On the 1820 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children Lucinda and Percival. Enumerated in Jackson Township in 1820 residing at or near Jobs Corners or Daggett with two males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), two females under age ten (b. 1811-20), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). On the 1822 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children, Lucinda, Percival, and Harry. David appears on the 1823 assessment list, 1824 is missing, and does not appear in 1825. Enumerated in Arkwright, Chatauqua County, New York in 1830 with one male under age five (b. 1826-30), two males of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), two males of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female under age five (b. 1826-30), two females of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-25), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). Enumerated in Berlin Township, Mahoning County, Ohio in 1850, farmer. Enumerated in Ohio, Crawford County, Indiana in 1860 in the household of son Alvah.

18.  Lucinda Franklin b. c. 1810.
19.  Percival Franklin b. c. 1812 New York.
20.  Harry Franklin b. 10 Jan 1815 Jackson Township.
21.  daughter b. c. 1816 Jackson Township.
22.  Parmelia Franklin b. c. 1818 Jackson Township.
23.  Riley Franklin b. 16 Apr 1821 Jackson Township.
24.  Alexander Franklin b. c. 1823 New York.
25.  David B. Franklin b. c. 1828 New York.
26.  daughter b. 1826-30.
27.  Alvah Cummings Franklin b. c. 1832 New York.

6.  John Franklin b. c. 1789 (age 25 on 1814 assessment submitted 7 Oct to Tioga County commissioners) m. Esther Daggett b. 26 Dec 1785 New Hampshire daughter of Reuben Daggett and Esther Cobb. The Daggett family resided in Paris, Oneida County, New York before their removal to Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Paris is in eastern Oneida County with Herkimer County to the east of Oneida and it is perhaps there that John and Esther made their acquaintance. He is perhaps the John Franklin enumerated in Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York in 1810 with one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1785-94), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1765), two females under age ten (b. 1801-10), and one female of age forty five and over (b. before 1765). If this is the John Franklin of this text and he is the male of age sixteen and under age twenty six there is no wife in the household. It is known there were two daughters b. before 1810 and the two persons over the age of forty five could perhaps be his parents as they have not been found in the 1810 census enumeration. There was a John Franklin enumerated in Tioga Township (one of only two townships created at that time), Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1810 with a wife, but no children in the household. On the 1812 assessment list (compiled fall of 1811) a John Franklin was assessed for one cow, the only real and personal property he owned that was taxable. John appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County, age 25, farmer, unless this refers to another John Franklin. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. He appears on the first assessment list of 1816 (compiled fall of 1815) of Jackson Township. On the 1820 assessment list (compiled fall of 1819) unable to pay for schooling of children Ruth, Philane, and Rufus. Enumerated in Jackson in 1820 with one male under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), three females under age ten (b. 1811-20), two females of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). On the 1821 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children Rufus and Lydia. On the 1822 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children Lana, Rufus, Lydda, and Martha. John appears on the 1823 assessment list, 1824 is missing, and does not appear in 1825. Enumerated in Hornby, Steuben County, New York in 1830 with one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), two females of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1801-10), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). In the household of Isaac Bideler (his wife was Esther Franklin daughter of John Franklin and Esther Daggett) in 1840 in Campbell, Steuben County there is an older female in the household that was perhaps Esther and also a female of the age to have been her daughter Keziah. Esther was enumerated in the household of daughter Esther Bideler and family in the town of Campbell, Steuben County, New York in 1850 (August) and two months later Esther was enumerated in Rush, Monroe County, New York in 1850 (October) beside the household of daughter Philena and family and in Esther’s household was Sarah E. Franklin, age 25; Mary E. Franklin, age 2; and Edward Franklin, age 2/12. Sarah is believed to have been the wife of the unknown son below. Esther d. 9 Nov 1853 67y 10m 13d (ts) Coopers Plains, Steuben County, New York (marker in excellent state of preservation in 2009).

8.  Ruth Franklin b. 14 Nov 1790 m. 15 Dec 1805 Enos Curtis b. 9 Oct 1783 Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York son of Edmond Curtis and Mary Avery. Enos appears on a special assessment of Tioga and Delmar Townships, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, dated 7 Oct 1814 when it was submitted to the commissioners of Tioga County. This was a special tax enumeration of the two townships that existed in the entire County at that date. Enos Curtis is listed as age 30, farmer. Enos appears on the first assessment list in 1816 (compiled fall of 1815) of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. On the 1820 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of Mariah and Martha. Enumerated in Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1820 with three males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), two females under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). They resided in that portion of Jackson Township that became Rutland Township. Unable to pay for schooling of children Maria and Martha on the 1822 assessment list of Jackson. Enumerated in Rutland, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1830 with one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), three males of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), two females under age five (b. 1826-30), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). The biographical sketch of James Friends in the History of Tioga County states - James Friends came to Tioga county, Pennsylvania, in the twenties, and located near Lawrenceville, where he engaged in lumbering and farming. The country was then principally covered by the primitive forest, and he endured the usual privations and hardships of pioneer life. About 1836 he removed to Jackson township, and located on a farm still owned by his son, S. R. Here he spent the remaining years of his life, dying in 1880, and left a family of eight children to mourn his loss. In early life he was identified with the Democratic party, but on the organization of the Republican party he became one of its active supporters. Mr. Friends was a man of marked integrity, his word being always regarded as good as his bond.

The Elmira Advertiser says that James Friends, of Jackson Township, died at his residence on the 6th of March last. He was one of the earliest settlers, if not the earliest, of the township, and lived on the farm where he died for more than 40 years. He was esteemed as a good neighbor and an excellent citizen. He was 73 years of age (The Wellsboro Agitator, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, Tuesday, March 18, 1873).
