1941 Diary - Herman Tears of Sullivan Township
Herman Charles Tears, son of Sadie Colby and Herman Camp Tears, was born in Sullivan Township 17 August 1913. In 1945 he married Winifred Brace. In the photo at left, Herman is on far right, Winifred on far left. They were attendants at the 1953 wedding of Winifred's brother, Gordon Brace, to Esther Baity.
The Tears Farm straddled the Rutland/Sullivan Border. The house was in Rutland and the barn across the road was in Sullivan Township.
Winifred died in 2002 and Herman in 2004.
Herman allowed me to copy his five year 1937-1941 diary about 1994 as well as the three diaries of his grandmother, Sadie Monro, which also appear on this site.

Mrs. Ella Gardner Bardwell, wife of George E. Bardwell, prominent farmer of the Austinville-Roseville section, was burned to death Tuesday afternoon, December 2, 1941, when fire destroyed a poultry building on the farm. The flaming building was discovered by Clifford hart, farm employee, as he was bringing a load of wood to the place. He and a neighbor, Raymond VanZile, attempted to control the fire but the building was consumed and Mrs. Bardwell’s body was found inside the ruins. Mr. Bardwell was in Troy at the time of the tragedy. Miss Mary Seeley, Deputy Coroner of Tioga County, said that the fire was caused by gasoline ignited by Mrs. Bardwell. She was 56 years old, a graduate of Mansfield State Teachers College and a very accomplished musician.
