GPS Coordinates for Locations in Town of Veteran, Chemung County NY
Joyce-

We have discussed GPS coordinates.

Handheld GPS readers will become more affordable and commonplace. There is a trend to identify locations by their coordinates. I predict that soon we will plug in the coordinates before leaving home and follow the arrow display to our destination.

There are websites, specifically “MapTech” that present a map, and the coordinates of the point under your cursor.

I am attaching an Excel file listing the coordinates for schools and cemeteries in the Town of Veteran, Chemung Co. I had hoped to get back to the area and validate the readings, but that may not happen until Spring. However, Brother Stuart who resides there as checked enough to make me fairly confident.

Under separate cover I will mail a marked 1869 map that identifies each school and cemetery.

A presentation format of degrees and decimal minutes is the best, in my opinion.

I calculate the longitude difference between 75 30.000W and 75 30.001W to be about 4.5 feet. and the latitude difference between 42 30.000N and 42 30.001N to be about 6 feet. In other words, you can zero in with considerable accuracy if your coordinates are correct.

For starters, I am offering the attachment with the understanding the readings are “first off” and may be refined. Each location is shown in all three of the common formats.
