Schools - Tioga County, Pennsylvania

 Covington High School graduated classes from 1893 to 1957. These lists are from the alumni association. They include people who were in the Covington area but who attended North Penn High School at Blossburg  after Covington High School consolidated with Blossburg. Once Mansfield High School opened in 1912, some Covington students attended classes there for their senior year and graduated from both schools. Esther Mays Harer typed these lists for us.

I hope that all are listed by their own names, but if there are cases where a person is listed with married alias only, please let me know so I can correct it.

I am adding obituaries where I have them. There may be more obits already on the site which you may hunt down and copy and paste in an email to me so I can add them to the appropriate class list.  MARVIN - Mrs. Ida Marvin Johnson, 84, of Mansfield, died Saturday, Aug. 24, 1963. She was the widow of Charles L. Johnson; member of Canoe Camp Church of Christ, the Missionary Society and the Eastern Star. Survived by daughter, Mrs. Ellery Besanceney of Mansfield; sister, Mrs. Glenn Gillette of Mansfield RD; brother, Lee R. Marvin of Portland, Ore.; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at Shaw & Robena Funeral Home, Mansfield on Tuesday at 2 p.m., the Rev. CAMPBELL, Blanche - Mrs. Blanche Tanner, 79, of Covington, died Wednesday, June 10, 1959. She was a member of the Church of Christ [Disciples], Covington. Survived by several cousins. Funeral service was held Friday at 2 p.m. at Church of Christ [Disciples], Covington. The Rev. Norman West officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Covington. - Mansfield Advertiser, June 1959

MARVIN, Edward E. - Prof. Marvin Died Thursday - County Superintendent of Schools Suffered Heart Attack - Edward E. Marvin, aged 55 years, of Covington, Tioga County Superintendent of Schools, died at 5 o'clock Thursday evening at the Blossburg hospital, a few days after suffering a heart attack while addressing a meeting at Blossburg. He had been County Superintendent of Schools since April 1934, succeeding Prof. J.G. March, of Wellsboro, under whom he served eight years as assistant superintendent. Mr. Marvin taught in the schools at Osceola and Little Marsh before becoming principal of the Covington High School, which position he filled most efficiently for several years before being elected assistant county superintendent. He was born in Covington, attended the local schools and was graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College, Bucknell University, and Pennsylvania State College. In addition to his school work, in which he achieved statewide recognition, Mr. Marvin was a prominent member of the Covington Church of Christ. He was also a member of Friendship Lodge, F&AM of Mansfield, and Covington Odd Fellows and the Grange. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Celia Blanchard Marvin; a daughter, Mrs. William Achilles of Geneva, and two sons, Edward and Richard, of Covington; a brother, Lee of Portland, Oregon, and four sisters, Mrs. William Douglas of Covington, and Mrs. Charles Johnson, Mrs. Glenn Gillette and Mrs. L.M. Goodall, of Mansfield. The funeral was held Sunday at the Covington Church of Christ, Rev. Myron Kauffman officiating; burial at Covington. OLNEY, Charles H., age 83, of Covington, Pa., Monday, February 5, 1973 at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, Wellsboro, Pa. Friends are invited to call at the Auld Funeral Home, Blossburg, Pa. Thursday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service there Friday at 2 p.m., the Rev. Mark Thomas officiating. Burial Prospect Cemetery, Mansfield, Pa. Survived by daughters, Mrs. Marie Ross of Horseheads, Miss Marian Olney of  Covington, Pa.; two brothers, Frank Olney of Tarpon Springs, Fla., D. Harold Olney of Blossburg, Pa.; one granddaughter; one great granddaughter. He was a member of the Cherry Flats Baptist Church. He was born in Mansfield on May 12, 1889, a son of William H. and Mary Clemens Olney. He was a retired farmer.

 Miss Mildred M. Cleveland, 91, formerly of 153 South Main St., Mansfield, the home of her late brother, Wayne R. Cleveland, who preceeded her in death January 11, 1984, died Thursday, January 2, 1986 in the Green Home at Wellsboro. Born December 18, 1894 at Putnam Township, Tioga County, she was a daughter of Reuben E. and Amy Frost Cleveland. Miss Cleveland retired as a teacher after 52 years of teaching in Tarrytown, NY and Pennsylvania schools.  She was a graduate of Mansfield Normal School an Columbia University. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Grace S. Cleveland of Mansfield and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. TWO KILLED AT BLOSSBURG
When Train Struck Car At Main Street Crossing
Mrs. Maude Robbins Schultz and Glenn Martin , of Blossburg were killed at about 10:30 a.m. Monday when the car in which they were riding was struck by a locomotive of the Bloss Division of the Erie Railroad at the Main street crossing.  Mr. Martin, brother of Roy D. Martin of Horseheads, was being driven home from a physicians office by Mrs. Schultz, a neighbor.  A.E. Parks of Hornell, engineer of the train, told Jack Van Dyke, investigating Blossburg police chief, that he had blown a whistle for the crossing, which is unguarded.  He said Mrs., Schultz apparently did not see the train in time and then tried to beat it across the tracks.  Mrs. Schultz was killed instantly: Mr. Martin died shortly after arrival of a physician.  The train hit the Schultz car on the side in which Mr. Martin was riding.  He was thrown from the demolished car while Mrs. Schultz was carried along in the wreckage.

Mrs. Schultz (Maude E. Robbins), widow of Alfred Schultz, was born in Covington, daughter of Mr. and Mr. Frank Robbins.  She was a member of the Methodist Church.  Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert Stradley, of Elmira, Mrs. Fred Miller, of Endicott, two sons, Howard and Harold, of Elmira; two sisters, Mrs. Mervin Bement, of Montour Falls, N.Y.; Mrs. Clarence Seeley, of Canton; two brothers, Earl Robbins of Rochester, and Mark Ayres, of Canton; and five grandchildren.  (The accident was 10/24/1949 and burial was in Arbon cemetery)

SOPER - Mrs. Lottie Soper Bailey (SRGP 12287), wife of Perley Bailey (SRGP 12290), of Covington, died Saturday afternoon at the Blossburg Hospital. Mrs. Bailey was born in Covington where she had spent her life. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Viola, and a son, Leon; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. William Soper of Covington, and three sisters. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at Covington; interment in Arbon Cemetery at Blossburg. - Wellsboro Agitator, 5 August 1931
