ABOVE - Front Street looking toward Reservoir Hill and the junction of the Wellsburg/Lowmanville Crossover with Rte 427.  Left, the Young Block housing an opera house, dance hall, general store with lodge rooms and meeting 'parlors' above.  The Exchange Hotel, J.L. West home, Collins' Jewelry Store and Young's brick home stood across the street.

All the cards in this section are taken from the four corners of Wellsburg and one into it. They are from the Hanmer Collection. This first card is taken from the corners looking East toward Waverly / Athens.

looking West toward Elmira - Rte 427 in the village was still a dirt road, and wooden sidewalks served Front Street residences.  The iron and steel bridge over Bentley Creek was built in 1892 by the Owego Bridge Company.  In the distance, Berwick Turnpike, originally a toll road, is visible.  Ashland's portion of this road which started in Berwick, Pa. in 1807, is still active today.
looking South - Two of Wellsburg's five hotels of the time; left, the Exchange with its' long two-story horse barn extending up Main Street; right across the street, the 1866 Fischler House/Alcazar and the awning-ed Hort Boileau/Aber Store.  Note the spire of Christ Episcopal Church over the tree tops.
looking North to the Four Corners - Residences, the Boileau/Aber Store and the Fischler House/Alcazar line Main Street leading to the R.C. Lockwood Brick Store across Front Street - thus completing Wellsburg's Business District, c. 1909/1910.  And in keeping with the times, the gas lamp, the hitching posts and the horse block were all a part of Wellsburg's history a century ago.
