Lawrenceville [Powers] Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania |
Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business. All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. |

THE LATE GALUSHA GROW CLOSE
In the space of little more than half a year, death removed from this world of the living two people whose influence among those who were privileged to know them, will continue so long as memory remains. On January 7, 1859, there was born to Reuben and Harriet (Lockwood) Close, of Chatham Twp, Tioga Co., PA., a son who was given the name, Galusha Grow, but was always known as Grow Close. A few months later, May 26, and in the adjoining township of Farmington was born the little girl whose life was to be so closely united with his for over 50 years. She was the daughter of Charles and Lucretia (Babcock) Weeks, and received the name of Ruie, a melodious variation of the Biblical name Zeruah. Both attended the district schools but as Charles Weeks entered the ministry of the Methodist church when Ruie was 6 yrs. old, she became acquainted with several school systems on the various charges to which her father was appointed. As they grew older, both young people wished to improve their talents beyond the opportunity given by the local schools, and Grow attended a business college at Mansfield, and Ruie went to Mansfield, then called a normal school, for a year or two. In the early 1880's Ruie Weeks went to teach the school in the Close district in Chatham. There the young couple met and were so strongly attracted by the sterling character, each of the other, that it was not long before they decided to continue life's journey together. They were married March 4, 1885, at the home of the bride's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. C. D. Northrop, in Troupsburg Twp, NY, The wedding ceremony was solemnized by Rev. Charles Weeks, and the young couple went to live on the Weeks farm in Farmington in the old house, part a log structure, where Ruie was born. There they made their home for 5 years, and in the spring of 1890 bought the farm in Lawrence Twp where the greater part of their 55 years together was spent. In the community, they were leaders in every good word and work. As superintendent of the Sunday School, class leader and member of the official board, Grow Close was closely identified with the church at Tompkins. When they moved to the twp., services were held in the school house, and the present attractive white church building that stands near the school grounds is to a great extent a monument to the devotion and sacrifice of this couple. Both were teachers in the church school for many years, Mrs. Close was active in the Ladies Aid Society and they were generous contributors to every call of the many branches of church work, local, national and international.
