Her silly humor, teasing, and spunk endeared her to those who knew her well. In her later years as the illness of dementia came upon her, she was a beautiful and quiet spirit of resigning to the will of God. HOLECEK –DORIS L. WHEELER a longtime resident of the Millerton, PA community, passed away Mon. Oct. 8, 2018 at Sayre Health Care Center at the age of 91. Born on Mar. 29, 1927 in Jackson Summit, PA; Doris was the daughter of the late, James C. & Violet Smith Holecek. The love of her life Dean C. Wheeler, whom she lost at the young age of 40 years, was her best friend and confidant. She often told us of the early times of their courtship when she would help him study or help him with his graduation speech. A committed wife, she was always by his side and that was most important to her. A homemaker, Doris also worked at A&P Foods as a single mom with young mouths to feed. The life of Doris was filled with love and joy. The best years were spent watching her children grow and helping them learn and discover the world. She provided a nurturing environment for her entire family. Doris grew up on the farm and that defined her sense of respect for the environment. She could always find a way to repurpose things, trying to find another use for it before throwing something away. The farm girl never lost her love for the garden and she spent hours with her flower and vegetable gardens. She canned and froze what was harvested, to enjoy later in the year. Doris loved to journal and kept track of family correspondence, her kitchen table always held the latest letter and photos from out of town family members. When Doris could no longer be in her home, she made the best of her situation and made many friends among the staff and residents at the Sayre Health Care Center. Never one to complain, there was always a smile and many times we were unaware of her pain and discomfort. Doris was a very humble and private person, she was a quite force to be reckoned with. We were blessed to have had her as our Mom and those who knew her were blessed as well. Surviving are her loving children, Brenda (Benjamin) Wilson, Tioga, PA; Barbara (Thomas) Hackett, Clearwater, FL; Alan (Bonnie) Wheeler, Elmira and Duane (Lorraine) Wheeler, Southport; nine grandchildren, many great Grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport/Elmira on Thurs. Oct. 11, 2018 between the hours of 2-4 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 4:15 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to the love of her life, Dean, at the Alder Run Cemetery in Millerton, PA at her family's convenience. –Elmira Star-Gazette 10/9/2018

WILCOX George F. Wilcox
aged 62 years, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of Millerton, Pa., was strangled to death at 6 o’clock last Thursday evening on the Jobs Corners – Mosherville highway, when his automobile was forced off the highway and a wire cable caught across his throat. Mrs. Wilcox, his wife, who was the only other occupant of the Ford car, was bruised on the shoulders and chest. Merritt Cook, who resides on the Bailey Creek highway, a short distance south of Jobs Corners, confessed to Fred Wilcox, a brother of Geo. F. Wilcox, that he was driving the car which collided with the Wilcox car, says the Star-Gazette. The accident happened in Bradford county, and County Coroner Lyons, of Ulster, was notified. A relative of Mr. Wilcox said, “We shall place all the facts in the hands of Coroner Lyons, including the admission made by Merritt Cook. We shall insist that action be taken.” Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, with several relatives, had enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner at the home of a relative near Roseville. Just before 6 o’clock they left for Millerton in their Ford car. They decided to go by the way of Mosherville toward Seeley Creek, turning to the dirt highway south of Seeley Creek. This would give an improved highway for a great part of the distance. Motorists and others who have passed over the Jobs Corners – Mosherville improved highway will recall that for some distance the road is located at the base of an embankment. The highway is supported by a stone support on the left when th4e driver is going north. The wall is laid to protect the highway from being washed out when Seeley creek goes on a rampage. Instead of a wood guardrail along the highway by the creek, two heavy wire cables have been stretched. These cables are painted white. It was at a point near the watering trough that a car approaching from the north was seen by Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox. It was another Ford car and was not approaching at a fast rate of speed. Neither was the Wilcox car being driven rapidly. According to Mrs. Wilcox, the drive of the approaching car did not turn close to the cables on the creek side of the highway, which were to the right of the approaching car. Mrs. Wilcox turned as close to the embankment as he could, so Mrs. Wilcox says, but could not escape being hit by the left front wheel of the approaching car. The front left wheels of the two cars did not lock, but evidently the hubs came together. The unexpected impact turned the wheels of the Wilcox car in such a manner that Mr. Wilcox lost control. The other car passed and the Wilcox car headed toward the creek. Mr. Wilcox was unable to check the momentum of the car and the front wheels ran off the bank, going under the lower cable. The upper cable smashed the windshield and part of the top of the car and was drawn taut across Mr. Wilcox’s throat. While Mrs. Wilcox was pinned partially in her seat by the cable, she realized her husband was in a serious position. She attempted to push the cable away, part of the car’s weight was held by the cable, and her efforts were futile. “You’ll have to get me out of here or I’ll choke to death!” gasped Mr. Wilcox. The wife exerted all her strength to extricate her husband, but in vain. The drive of the other car did not stop. Had he done so, it is probable that a little aid would have been sufficient to release Mr. Wilcox. It was possibly 20 minutes after the accident that Charles Wilson, a relative, who had been visiting for the day at the same home with Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox arrived. He and his party released Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, but Mr. Wilcox was dead. Mr. Wilson took Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox to Millerton in his car, where Mrs. Wilcox was given medical attention by Dr. Ivan Pratt. She had suffered many cuts and bruises. None of these is regarded as serious. Mr. Wilcox is survived by his widow, one son, Holly S. Wilcox, Erie train dispatcher at Hornell; one daughter, Mrs. Albert W. Miller, of Millerton; five brothers, Attorney H.D. Wilcox, Samuel Wilcox and John F. Wilcox, of Elmira; Fred Wilcox of Roseville, Pa., and Asa Wilcox, of Mosherville, Pa. Coroner A.B. Lyon, of Bradford county, took charge of the case Friday morning. The point in the highway where the accident occurred is in Bradford county. It was necessary to secure a jury of citizens of that county. The following jury was selected: John Jones, farmer; Sidney McClellan, stock dealer; L.S. Shepard, merchant; George Lucky, farmer; Samuel Braisted and John Tuton, traveling men, all of Mosherville. At 1 o’clock Friday afternoon the coroner began the formal inquest. The jury viewed the body and heart testimony of several witnesses. Those who told of the accident included Mrs. George F. Wilcox, the widow; Curtis Smith, Charles Wilson, Foster Wilson and Fred Wilson, who were among the first upon the scene of the accident and assisted in backing the Ford car and releasing Mrs. Wilcox and removing the body of her husband and Mr. and Mrs. Asa Wilcox, Mr. Wilcox being a brother of the deceased. Coroner Lyon took the jury in automobiles to the scene of the accident on the Mosherville - Jobs Corners highway. Measurements were taken and the witnesses, who found the car shortly after the accident, explained the position of the car and the jury was permitted to draw inferences as to the manner in which the accident happened. The funeral of George F. Wilcox was held at the home in Millerton at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Rev. F. Barrett, pastor of the Baptist church at Jackson Summit officiating. The Tioga lodge of Masons and the Millerton lodge of Odd Fellows, of which Mr. Wilcox was a member, attended and had charge of the services at the grave. Burial in the cemetery in Millerton. Mr. Wilcox was the station agent for the Tioga division of the Erie in Millerton and was a justice of the peace. Wellsboro Agitator, 3 December 1919.
