Michael Age 89, of Elmira, NY, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the St.
Joseph's Hospital in Elmira. Michael was born in Elmira, son of the late John
and Mary (Melnick) Macekur. Michael retired from Thatcher Glass after many
years of service. Survivors include sister, Anna (Stephen) Andrewson of Elmira
Heights; niece, Mary Ann (James) Frits; great-grandniece, Shannon Frits;
great-grandnephews, Jim and Danny Frits. Panykhda will be held Wednesday, May
18, 2005, at 9:30 a.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home, followed by the
Divine Liturgy in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Rev.
Vasili Gudenciuc as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
MAGERA Mykola (Nikolaus)
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather - Age 88 of Elmira,
NY. He was born February 21, 1921 in Jaroslaw, Ukraine and died Sunday,
November 29, 2009, in his home. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years,
Marta; sons and daughters-in-law, Jaroslaw (Jerry) and Irene, Myroslaw (Mark) and
Lisa, Bohdan (Bob) and Sheree Magera; daughter, Lesia Magera with companion,
Chet Stineman; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mykola immigrated to
the United States in 1950. He retired from American Bridge; was President of
the Ukrainian Congress Committee, agent for Branch 51 of the Providence
Association, President of the Ukrainian Club; was a member of St. Nicholas
Ukrainian Catholic Church where he helped with the construction of the church,
organized and taught the Ukrainian Youth dancing group, was a member of the
Ukrainian Choir and was an avid Christmas caroler. He loved the outdoors, among
his favorites, hunting and fishing. Family and friends are invited to visit

December 1st, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Panikhyda will be held at 7 p.m.

MAKAROWSKI Stella
Age 90 formerly of Elmira Heights, NY. Stella was born October 11, 1922 in Elmira, daughter of the late Wladimir and Sophia (Mathews) Makarowski and died Sunday, March 10, 2013 at Elcor Health Services. She was predeceased by her parents; brother William and sister Mary Rutzke. She is survived by her sister-in-law Irene (Obuhanich) Makarowsk of Erie, PA; nephew Bill Makarowski and wife Barbara (Payne) Makarowski of Erie, PA and niece Mary T. Dickinson and husband Steven Dickinson of Marietta, GA. Also, four great nieces; Elizabeth Hokaj of Erie, PA with children Luca and Tara; Kathleen Makarowski of Erie, PA; Rebecca Pittman of Norwood, MO with children Polly and Phoebe and Mary Lou Gelzinis of Charleston, SC. Also, two close friends Mary Nickerson and Anna Nemeth both of Elmira. Stella was a faithful communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church when she was in good health. She was a member of Catholic Daughters and St. Nicholas Sodality and enjoyed working at the parish helping with church cleaning, picnics and clerical activities. She was a former member of the choir. Stella graduated from T.A.E. High School; was a member of the Hardinge Brothers Women's Club; a former employee of Remington Rand and retired from Hardinge Bros. MAKAROWSKI William J. Age 88, formerly of 424 E. 14th St., Elmira Heights, NY. He was born August 16, 1918 in Elmira, son of the late William and Sophia (Mathews) Makarowski and died Monday, September 11, 2006, at St. Mary's At Asbury Ridge, Erie, PA. Of Elmira, NY. She was born in Elmira, daughter of the late Omar and Anna
(Wasovitch) McKee and died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at home after a brief illness.
She was predeceased her parents; and brother, Michael in 2006; and is survived
by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Elaine McKee of Auburn, NY; aunt and
uncle, Kathryn and George Misnick of Horseheads; cousins, Nicholas and Mindy
Misnick of Elmira; sister-in-law, Donna Hughes of Elmira; five nieces including
special niece, Jacqueline McKee of Elmira. Peggy was currently Dietary
Purchaser at St. Joseph's Hospital where she has been employed for 43 years.

MENTUCK - HILL, Ann M.
Age 86, of Elmira, NY, died on Friday, December 4, 2009 at the Arnot Ogden
Medical Center. She was born on September 5, 1923 in Elmira, NY to the late
Michael and Dora (Pihura) Mentuck. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Arthur
Hill and brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Charlotte Mentuck. Survivors
include her daughters, Dorothy (Richard) Seebach of NJ and Alexis (Alan)
Griffin of MA; grandchildren, Michelle (Sean) Curran of CA, John Seebach of NJ,
Thomas Griffin and Christine Griffin both of MA; great-grandchildren, Sofie and
Alastair Curran both of CA and nephew, Mark (Sandra) Mentuck of Elmira. There

Age 57 of Chandler, AZ. She was born October 1, 1950 in Elmira, daughter of the
late Wasyl and Anna (Busten) Michalko and went to be with our Lord on Thursday,
June 26, 2008, at home after a long battle with cancer. She was predeceased by
her brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Mary Ann Michalko, John, Walter,
Nicholas and Stephen Michalko, Louis and Mary Helen Michalko; and is survived
by her children, Melissa Root and Maggie Milford, both of Gilbert, AZ, Denny
Milford of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Araya Lee Root, Dillon Root, Kelsey
Wright and Jayden Wright; companion, Lynn Coomber of Chandler, AZ; brother and
sister-in-law, Joseph and Alyce Michalko of Elmira; sisters-in-law, Helen
Michalko of Rochester, NY, Vera and Stella Michalko, both of Elmira, Beverly
Michalko of Horseheads; aunt, Frances Michalko; along with several nieces and

MICHALKO Andrew
Age 88, of Elmira Heights died peacefully, surrounded by his most loving wife
and family and the caregivers at CCNF at his side on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. He
is survived by his wife Helen (Thomas) of 62 years of devotion, love and
caring. He is also survived by his loving children Ron (Julie), Dan (Theresa)
both of Rochester, Richard (Beth) of Syracuse, Linda (Jerry) of Alpharetta, GA,
Lana (Tommy) of Massapequa; "Daughters" Jean and Beverly of
Horseheads. Surviving grandchildren include Ashli Sardo (Fiance' Patrick),
Kirstie Linza, Very Special Deborah Joy Michalko, Taylor Jean Williamson,
Andrew Thomas and Daniel Michael Wraith; great grandchildren Billy Jo Powlowski
and McKenzie Green. Surviving Loving Sisters include Pauline Tsibidas and Chris
Jansen; Loving Sister-in-law Frances Michalko; and many Loving Nieces, Nephews
and Cousins. He was pre-deceased by his Loving "daughter" Tina,
grandson Brandon Patrick, parents, four brothers and four sisters. Andy was a
lifetime member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Elmira Heights. He
volunteered many hours of labor in helping to build our new Temple. Andy was a
Staff Sgt. stationed in the Aleutian Islands with the U.S. Army. He was
employed with GE Foundries for 40 years, was Village Trustee for many years, a
lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 154, participated in the Senior
Olympics for several years and won medals in Track and Swimming. He loved
playing baseball, softball and volleyball. Family and friends are invited to
call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads, NY on Friday July
24, 2009 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Memorial service (Panihida) will
take place there at the funeral home at 8:00 pm. Funeral service will also take

Age 55 of Horseheads, NY. He was born May 9, 1956 in Elmira, son of the late Walter S. and Patricia J. (Murray) Mowchan and passed away Monday, December 19, 2011 very unexpectedly. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law Kathryn and John J. (Joe) Karski, Constance and Michael Warren and Patricia Mowchan; brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Kimberly Mowchan all of Elmira Heights; adored nieces and nephews Jennifer and Nicholas Karski, Elizabeth and Katelyn Warren, Lindsay and Adam Malone, Matthew and Mallory Mowchan; great niece and nephew Brinley and Landen Malone. Steve was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Horseheads and was formerly employed with Elmira Floral Products for over 28 years. He was a devoted and dedicated communicant and former trustee of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church; coached Elmira City League Women's softball and basketball and Horseheads Women's Slow Pitch softball. Age 77, of 200 McCauley Ave., Elmira Heights, NY. She was born March 15, 1932
in Sayre, PA, daughter of the late Samuel and Katherine (Novak) Murray and died

by her husband Walter S. Mowchan on September 5, 2004 and is survived her

MYHALYK Juliana M.
Age 55, of Elmira, NY, died unexpectedly on Monday, February 1, 2010. Juliana
was born on July 11, 1954 in Elmira, daughter of the late William and Anna
(Obuhanych) Myhalyk. Juliana was a teacher's assistant for the Elmira School
District for several years, but later devoted her time to take care of her
loving parents. Survivors include her sister, Kathleen Martin of Baldwinsville,
NY; brother, David Myhalyk of Naples, FL; niece, Melanie (Brendan) Boylan of
Philadelphia, PA; aunts, Mary (Richard) Palizay and Ann Obuhanych; uncle, Harry
Obuhanych; dear friend and neighbor, Mary McFarland; along with her other caring

OBUHANYCH Frank
Age 79 of Elmira Heights, NY, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at
the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Frank was born on September 4, 1929
in Elmira Heights, son of the late Samuel and Katherine (Skirka) Obuhanych.
Frank retired from Bendix as a machinist after many years of service. He was a
member of the UAW-CIO Union and was proud to be a lifetime resident of Elmira
Heights. His favorite past time was gardening. Frank will be dearly missed by
those that knew him. Survivors include his brother, Harry Obuhanych of
Horseheads, NY; sister-in-law, Anna Obuhanych of Canandaigua, NY; many nieces
and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his sisters,
Anna Myhalyk and Helen Obuhanych, brothers, John and William Obuhanych. It was
Frank's wish that his service be private to the family. Interment will take
place in Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery in Horseheads, NY, at the convenience
of the family. Donations in memory of Frank can be made to a charity of one's

OBUHANYCH Harry
Age 96, of Horseheads, NY, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. He was born on April 30, 1916 in Elmira Heights, NY to the late Samuel and Katherine (Skirka) Obuhanych. Harry was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Helen Obuhanych; brothers, William, John and Frank Obuhanych; and sisters, Anna Myhalyk and Helen Obuhanych. He is survived by his sons, Robert (Vikki) Obuhanych of Portland, OR and Thomas (Ko) Obuhanych of Cody, WY; daughters, Barbara (Dr. Peter) Cullen of NC and Mary (Robert) Harris of Horseheads; grandchildren, Mark, John, Robert, Thomas and Daniel; great-grandchildren, Elle, Chase and Chloe; along with several nieces and nephews. Harry was a veteran of the US Army Air Force during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He retired from Bendix after many years of service. It was Harry's wish that all services be held privately. Interment will take place in Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Age 84 of Elmira Heights, NY died Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the Arnot
Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Helen was born on April 12, 1924 in Elmira
Heights, daughter of the late Samuel and Katherine (Skirka) Obuhanych. Helen
retired from the Marine Midland Bank in Elmira Heights after many years of
service. She was a former member of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Elmira
Heights. She loved meeting with the retired employees of the Marine Midland
Bank and her school friends for luncheons. She loved gardening and grooming the
beautiful flowers she grew. She was a devoted sister and aunt. She will be
dearly missed by those that knew her. Survivors include her brothers, Frank
Obuhanych of Elmira Heights and Harry Obuhanych of Horseheads, NY;
sister-in-law, Ann Obuhanych of Canandaigua, NY; many nieces and nephews and
great nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her sister, Anna Myhalyk;
brothers, John and William Obuhanych. Family and friends are invited to call
Monday, September 22, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral

Loving and devoted husband, father & grandfather - Age 83 of Elmira
Heights, NY. He was born May 8, 1926 in Elmira Heights, son of the late John
and Eva (Daddo) Panyla and went to be with our Lord Monday, January 18, 2010,
at the VA Center, Bath, NY surrounded by his loving family, after an extended
illness. He was predeceased by his wife, G. Louise Panyla in 1988; daughter,
Joann Griswold in 2004; and sister, Marie; and is survived by his daughters,
Susan Panyla of Elmira Heights, Lu-Ann Panyla of Big Flats; grandchildren,
Nancy (Griswold) Mesic of Middletown, NY with husband, Edward and children,
Kaitlyn and Brian Mesic, David Panyla-Mucci of Elmira Heights with son, Jacob
Panyla-Mucci, Adrianne Guild of Big Flats with son, Kevin Ayers, Jessica Guild
of Big Flats with children, Jasmine and Jared Marks, Anthony Guild of Elmira
Heights; brother, Dennis (Sarah Cowan) Panyla of Horseheads. Paul was a
communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. He owned All Point
Service Station in Elmira and the Big 9 Ice Cream Shop in Elmira Heights. Paul
served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII; was a life member of
the Catholic War Veterans, Post 1176, American Legion Post 154 and the V.F.W.

Age 89 of Grand Central Ave. in Horseheads and formerly a longtime resident in both Elmira Heights and Hornell died after a brief illness on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2012. Fran was born in Vandergrift, PA to the late Joseph and Caroline Pasturzak. She was predeceased by her husband, Metro Kowilich in 2000. Her surviving family includes her daughter and son, Karen (Tom) Sylvester of Rush, NY, Joseph (Cindy) Kowilich of Oviedo, FL; Grandchildren, Kari (Jude) McDonough, Peter Kowilich, Krystina Sylvester and Tim Sylvester; Fran is also survived by her two sisters, Caroline Droleski and Josephine Zorich both of Elmira and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary, Ann, Sophie, Loretta and Katherine. Fran was devoted to her faith and a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church in Elmira Heights and also a member of their auxiliary. She was a member of the Horseheads Women's Club, American Lung Assoc. and volunteer for the American Red Cross. Fran was active in her church and community; however, that which was most important were the activities of her family. 1943 and they recently celebrated their 63rd Wedding Anniversary on May 29,
2006. She was a retired employee of the Horseheads Central School System. She
was active in many organizations throughout the community. Margaret was
pre-deceased by her daughter Shirley Kowalski on August 28, 1953. Mrs. Kowalski
was also pre-deceased by her sisters Josephine Dekoshak and Frances Paska. Mrs.

daughter of Michael and Louise (Baglioni) Rakich. Michaeline raised her family
in New York and Naples, FL before moving to Palm Beach County with her husband,
Vincent in 1998. Michaeline was an outstanding teacher and an inspiring
administrator with Palm Beach County School District from 1998 to 2005, when
her illness cut short her career. Survivors include her husband, Vince;

Minotti; beloved granddaughter, Daniella Gutierrez; mother, Louise Rakich;

of the Catholic War Veterans Post #1178 Ladies Auxiliary, past president of the
American Legion Post #154 Ladies Auxiliary, member of the VFW Post #6083 Ladies
Auxiliary. She was also past treasurer of the Ukrainian American National Club,
past treasurer of CSEA Chemung County Local & retirees. Ann retired from
Chemung County after many years of service. She was a loving wife, mother,
grandmother and great-grandmother. Ann was predeceased by her husband, Richard
Page in 1962; and also by 12 brothers and sisters. Survivors include her sons,

Age 93, of Elmira Heights, NY, died on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at the
Chemung County Nursing Facility. He was born on May 9, 1915 in Ludlow, MA. He retired
from American Bridge after many years of service. He was a longtime member of
St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir. Mike
is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Alex (Lee) Shaban of Elmira
Heights and Nick (Vicky) Shaban of Horseheads; daughter, Kateryna Melendevych
of Ukraine; son-in-law, Leonard Grasso of Whippany, NJ; eight grandchildren,
Michael (Kelly), Christine, Jonathan (Melanie), David, Petro (Halena), Lennie,
Jason and Tony; three great-grandchildren, Yuriy, Irena and Jason; along with
several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mike was predeceased by his wife, Kateryna
Swerbynka; and daughter, Mary Grasso. He loved all animals, especially dogs and
pigeons, sports and also shopping, but most of all his family. Family and

Age 59 of Elmira Heights, NY. She was born February 24, 1953 in Elmira, daughter of Henry A. and Eleanor (Simbalski) Sherman and died Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. SHOWERS - Bette R. (Showers) Boyer, 74, affectionately called “Poose” by her family, died at home in Nichols, N.Y., on Feb. 15, 2010. Bette was born on Sept. 6, 1935, in New Columbia, Pa., the daughter of Earland Dale Showers and Elizabeth Grace (Jows) Showers. She married Wayne M. Boyer on Sept. 10, 1960. Wayne and Bette moved to the Nichols area when Wayne accepted a teaching position at the Tioga Central School; together they made Nichols their home for the past 44 years. Besides her husband, Bette is survived by her daughters and their husbands Tamara (Steven) Ciampoli of Lansdale, Pa., Teri (David) Westbrook of Greenfield, Mass., and Michele (Michael) Ingersoll of McKinney, Texas. Also surviving are her grandsons Brian and Joshua Westbrook, Darrick and Dustin Ingersoll, and Trevor Ciampoli; her sisters and their husbands Zona (Jacob) Engle, Linda (Randall) Beckman, Lois (Frederick) Ripka, and April (William) Clemens; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bette was predeceased by her parents and a grandson, Johann Ciampoli. Bette was the librarian at the Cady Library for many years and also served as the Village of Nichols treasurer. Bette greatly enjoyed her grandchildren, NASCAR, puzzles, games, and travel. She will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her one-of-a-kind beautiful crafts, her household inventions, and her spirited personality. Age 82, of Middlebury, VT. He was born October 2, 1926 in Elmira, son of the
late Charles and Stella (Gush) Sinkew and died Sunday, February 1, 2009, in
Vermont. He was predeceased by his wife, Veronica (Sekella) Sinkew in 2002; and
brother, Elias "John" Sinkew. Joe is survived by his daughter,
Natalie Sinkew of Burlington, VT; son, Michael Sinkew of North Bergen, NJ;
foster sons, David Matot of Colchester, VT and David Vieira of Burlington, VT;
sisters, Mary Garcia of Belen, NM and Pauline Bazzaglia of Columbia Crossroads,
PA; along with several nieces and nephews. He was retired from the U.S. Postal
Service and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Joe was an avid downhill skier
and bow hunter and was a member of the National Ski Patrol. He loved Vermont
and the rural outdoors lifestyle it offered. Family and friends are invited to

69, of 131 North Higgins Ave., a lifelong resident of Sayre, Pa. died Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. John was born August 28, 1942 in Sayre the son of the late John S. Stetz Sr. and Mary Bobick Stetz. He was a graduate of Sayre High School and attended Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He began his career by working on the Lehigh Valley Railroad operating locomotives and was later employed by LePrino Foods, Stateline Auto and served the majority of his 37 year career as Registrar of Vital Statistics for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. John was dedicated to community service his entire life. He was the youngest ever elected member of Sayre Borough Council where he served as Councilman, Council President and as Mayor of Sayre. He also served as Bradford County Democratic Chairperson. John enjoyed raising livestock and small scale farming and was very knowledgeable in both areas. THOMAS - MICHALKO Helen Olga (Thomas)
Age 87, of Elmira Heights, went peacefully to join her beloved husband on
January 17th of 2010. She was born on December 2, 1922 to the late Michael and Anna.
Helen was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Elmira
Heights where she was a tireless volunteer best-known for her legendary
pierogies. She worked at Bendix Corp., helped run Helen & Andy's Soda Shop,
and made candy at the A&P Plant. In her "spare time" she would
paint, fix and scrub spotless every apartment home she owned and rented out
with her handyman and mate, Andy. She loved to sew, cook for crowds, play on
her computer all night, and always put others ahead of herself. She is survived
by her loving children, Ron (Julie), Dan (Theresa), both of Rochester, Richard
(Beth) of Syracuse, Linda Williamson of Alpharetta, GA, Lana (Tommy) Wraith of
Massapequa; "Daughters", Jean and Beverly of Horseheads. Surviving
grandchildren include Ashli Sardo (fiance' Patrick), Kirstie Linza, Very
Special Deborah Joy Michalko, Taylor Jean Williamson, Andrew Thomas and Daniel
Michael Wraith; great-grandchildren, Billy Jo Powlowski and McKenzie Green.
Surviving loving sisters-in-law include Pauline Tsibidas, Chris Jansen, and
Frances Michalko; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to
her parents, she was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years,

TYHANSKA Veronica Oryszczak
Age 90, of Elmira, NY, died on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. She was born on December 15, 1922 in Poland to the late Timothy and Anna (Hutcha) Tyhanska. Veronica was predeceased by her husband, Wasyl Oryszczak. She is survived by her son, Walter Oryschak of VA; daughter, Stephani Oryszczak of Elmira; grandsons, Alexandre, Gregory, Christopher and Justin Oryschak all of VA; two great-grandchildren. Veronica retired from St. Joseph's Hospital after many years of service. She was a longtime member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Church, a member of the Sacred Heart Society and also the Pyrohy Ladies. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, July 2nd from 1 to 2 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. TYRA Dorothy CLEMENS, 92, of Millerton, PA died Saturday April 29, 2000 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira, NY. Dorothy was born March 23, 1908 in Pittsburgh, PA, daughter of the late Anthony and Sophie Tyra. Dorothy was employed as a hat model in the 1920’s at Iszards Department store and later at Remington Rand. She was married to the late Keith Clemens who died in 1980. survivors include her daughter Lorraine Gross of Millerton, PA; grandchildren, William Miller of Millerton, PA, Sherry Miller of Elmira, NY, Thomas (Keith) Lewis of Millerton, Tyrone Lewis of Elmira and Lamona Vickery of Troy, PA; great grandchildren, Keith Miller, Nichole Lewis, Michael Lewis, Christopher Lewis, Stephanie Vickery and Deven Place; a brother and six sisters. Divine liturgy was held May 2 at St. Nicholas Church in Horseheads, NY with the Rev. Junusz Jedrychowski officiating and interment to be in St. Nicholas Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Barrett Funeral Home.
URCHAK KATHERINE MICHAELINE WEBB
Katherine Michaeline Age 89, a compassionate woman with love for all living
things, died on March 9, 2007 in Quincy, Illinois, while visiting her
granddaughter and great-grandchildren. She was born on November 21, 1917 in
Elmira, NY to the late Metro and Katherine (Pachelskie) Urchak. She later went
on to marry Mr. Webb in 1937. Mrs. Webb was predeceased by her husband, World
War II Veteran, Mr. Robert Webb. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Ms.
Irene Urchak and Mrs. Josephine Campanelli. Mrs. Webb was a loving, involved
and attentive mother of three sons who survive her, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Webb of
Fort Pierce, FL, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Webb of Horseheads, and Mr. and Mrs.
James Webb of Rantoul, IL. She was a wonderful grandma to her four
granddaughters, of whom she shared a birthday with her granddaughter, Jennifer
Rhoads; Michelle Maloney, Melissa Kelly and Melinda Webb; and to her six
great-grandchildren, Aaryn Maloney, Jacob Rhoads, Hannah Rhoads, Benjamin
Rhoads, Alaysha Kelly and Elizabeth Kelly; as well as an aunt to, Don
Campanelli. In her 89 years she accomplished several things. She graduated
Valedictorian at age 16 and went onto Elmira Business Institute, from there she
went on to work for American Bridge Works. Mrs. Webb later went to Chemung
County Child Welfare Department, where she worked effortlessly to assist in
helping children for 30 years until she retired. In Katherine's spare time she
loved to have her family around her and to see the ocean. Mrs. Webb has lived
with her son, James Webb and his wife for the last three years in Illinois. She
was tremendously loved and respected and will be deeply missed by all the
family. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday, March 19th, from 7 to
9 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Panakhyda will take place at 7
p.m. Divine Liturgy will be held on Tuesday, March 20th, at 10 a.m. at St.

VARGASON Harold M. Sr., Age 63, of Albion, NY, formerly of Elmira Heights, NY, died on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Lakeside Hospital in Brockport, NY after a year-long battle with cancer. Harold was born on September 25, 1944 in New York, NY, son of Andy and Julia (Selewach) Vargason. Harold graduated from Thomas Edison High School and recently retired from NYS Department of Corrections as an officer. He was predeceased by his mother, Julia in 2001; and his twin brother, Peter Vargason in 1981. Harold is survived by his father, Andy Vargason of Albion, NY; daughter, Renee (Michael) Barry of Rochester, NY; son, Harold Vargason Jr. of Elmira; granddaughter, Stephanie Effrige of Rochester, NY; and his beloved pet, "Rusty." Age 82, a longtime resident of Pine City, died Thurs. Sept. 20, 2012 at her home. Born on Feb. 10, 1930 in Elmira, Mary was the daughter of the late Paul & Christina Cusick Zubriski. Surviving is her loving family, son, Robert E. (Ana) Fischer, Miami, FL; daughter, Susan (Randy) Murphy, Pine City; grandsons, Kyle (Katie) Murphy and Ryan Murphy; sister, Anna Obuhanick; brother-in-law, Alojzy Niesluchowski; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert A. Fischer in 1993; along with 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Mary belonged to the NYSRL and was devoted to saying the rosary. She enjoyed gardening and being outdoors on her property. She was a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church. ? ARPASZEW Alexandra
Age 84, formerly of 378 Diven Avenue, Elmira, NY, died on Tuesday, February 5,
2008, at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born on
January 20, 1924 near Kursk, Russia. She is preceded in death by her husband,
Walter (1997), and two infant children in Germany after World War II. Alexandra
is survived by daughters, Tamara (George) Downsbrough of Bellefonte, PA and
Lucy (Al) Losey of Lawrenceville, PA; five grandchildren, Leschia Ruhe of King
of Prussia, PA, Jana Losey of Lawrenceville, PA, Juston Losey of Indiana, PA,
Melissa Downsbrough of Philadelphia, PA, and Lea Downsbrough of Arlington, VA;
two great-grandchildren, Kyle Ruhe and Camille Losey. She was displaced by the
Nazis from Russia when she was a teenager and sent to a work camp in Germany.
She told many stories about those days that will forever live on in her family.
Alexandra was a petite woman but was feisty, which got her into trouble
regularly. At one point she was shot in the arm for running away from her
assigned camp to a camp where she had more friends. It was near the end of this
time period that she met and married her husband. They ended up in France after
the war where they lived for several years. Alexandra came to the United States
from France along with her husband and daughters in 1956. She ran her own
cleaning business for several years and then worked in the St. Joseph's
Hospital Housekeeping Department. She was employed there for ten years. She was
a very social woman and absorbed languages around her so she could talk to
anyone - for example she learned Italian while she lived in France so she could
talk and be friends with her next door neighbor. She could converse in seven
languages. She loved to take cruises, play Bingo, watch soap-operas, dance the
polka, and in her later years took up crocheting. There will be a Memorial
Service on Friday, February 8, 2008, at 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Orthodox
Christian Church, 140 Horseheads Blvd., in Elmira Heights. Family and friends
will be received at Holy Trinity on Saturday, February 9, 2008, from 12 to 1
p.m. Funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. with Father Jason Kappanadze as
celebrant. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery. Funeral
arrangements under the direction of James D. Barrett Funeral Home, Lake Street,

September 23, 2005, at the Lakeside Beikirch Care Center in Brockport, NY.
Emilie was born on April 23, 1911 in the Ukraine. She was predeceased by her
husband, John Nideiwodin; daughter, Clara Ruday, and son-in-law, Walter Ruday.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Shirley Nideiwodin of
Mesa, AZ; daughter and son-in-law, Valentina and Wehner Landenburger of
Stuttgart, Germany; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; along with
several nieces and nephews. Emilie was a longtime member of the Holy Trinity
Orthodox Christian Church. A Funeral Service for Emilie will be held on
Wednesday, September 28th, at 10 a.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home,
