Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business. All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. were active parishioners at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. After Eugene
passed away in 1978, Helen joined St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she sang
in the choir for many years. Helen held several jobs in and around Elmira,
then worked as a glass blower at the Westinghouse Factory for 25 years,
retiring at the age of 62. After achieving her secretarial science degree,

hobby of ballroom dance. She often said that dancing kept her young and her
family loved to watch her perform. Through dance, she made wonderful
friends, including her beloved partner and companion, Dave Ridenour. Helen
lived her life to the fullest. Her favorite moments were with her family,

They were not golf and tennis, but cooking for the family and babysitting the kids. Our mother protected us all throughout her life whether we lived in Africa or The United States. We always considered Grace the peace-maker of the family. She will be missed immensely. On a personal note, we cannot thank enough the 5th Floor Skilled Nursing Facility at St. Joseph’s Hospital. They are the most compassionate workers we have ever met. A special thank you to Dr. Roberto Mauri who cared for Grace for the last 17 years. He died peacefully and deeply loved by his wife of 61 years, Grace, and his loving family, including his sons and daughters-in-law Tony & Maurina Ruggiero and Mario & Elizabeth Ruggiero of Horseheads, NY, and his daughter and son-in-law, Bruna & Jim Ortbals of Columbia, MO. Heartfelt thanks to Americare and special thanks to his caregivers, Brian Navono, Rebecca and Debbie Agan and to the special care provided by Dr. Roger Schenone. Tony, Joseph's son, adds this personal note: Our father, Joseph Ruggiero, fought bravely in WWII in North Africa, was wounded and taken to an Italian Hospital in Naples, Italy where he recovered from his wounds. He met his future wife Grace during his recovery and they moved back to Tripoli, Libya. In 1960 my father wished that his family have a better life, so he left his home and family and came to America and brought his family to Elmira, NY in 1961. He was not the sort of father who was out at bars or clubs. He was the kind of father who was always home when his family needed him. He loved and supported his family unconditionally, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health. From the time I opened the Do-It Center in 1978, and for the next twenty-five years, he was there every morning of every day to open the store at 5 AM so Mario and I could sleep. Whenever I needed him, he was there. Our father's goal was to bring us to America to provide us a better life. Now, Dad, you can rest in peace, wherever you are. Because of you and thanks to you, we have been blessed with a great life. Thanks for being there. Your Loving Family Mr. Ruggiero was a retired employee of The Horseheads Do-It Center.
