11.  William Seeley b. 1781-90 is placed as a son of Samuel as evidenced by his daughter Mahala in    which she stated she was born in Wells, Bradford County, Pennsylvania the daughter of William    Seeley and granddaughter of Samuel Seeley. The statement was published in 1889 when Mahala was    about 66 years old.

On 10 Apr 1807 Samuel Seely of Newtown, County of Tioga, conveyed, with the consent of his wife Mercy, 592 acres to William    Seely of Newtown, except 60 acres mortgaged to Daniel Hall, Esq., by Josiah Seely, the first owner of Orange County. Witnessed by    James Seely, Jr., and Bartlett Seely. Signed Samuel Seely (Tioga County Deed 3:267). This must be the parcel of 592 ¾ acres that    Nathaniel Seely, Jr., and Elizabeth his wife, Abner Hetfield and Elizabeth his wife, Samuel Edsall and Sarah his wife, James Seely    and Nancy his wife, and Addam Seely of the town of Chemung and County of Tioga conveyed to Josiah Seely, Jr., of Orange    County, New York. Signed by Nathaniel Seely Junr., Elizabeth Seely, Adam Seely, Samuel Edsall, Sarah Edsall, James Seely,    Nancy Seely, Abner Hetfield, Elizabeth Hetfield. Witnessed by Samuel Seely and Timothy Smith (Tioga County Deeds 1:44-5).     There is no record of how Samuel came into possession of the property, but many early deeds went unrecorded. The property    evidently reverted back to Samuel when on 20 May 1809 Samuel and Mercy mortgaged 592 acres to Josiah Seeley of Orange    County, New York, which mortgage was paid in full on 29 Jan 1812 (Tioga County Mortgage 1:161).

William first appears on the 1815 assessment list (compiled fall of 1814) of Wells Township,    Bradford County, Pennsylvania following brother Bartlett Seeley and cousins Benjamin Seeley and    Strong Seeley who had removed there a few years earlier. The southern portion of the Seeley Creek    Valley is in Wells Township and only a short distance from where the Seeley family first settled in    what became the Town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. William perhaps had an unknown   first wife by whom he perhaps had a son who was of age ten and under age sixteen in the 1820 census   enumeration of Wells. William m. Sarah Judson b. 4 Feb 1790 daughter of Solomon Judson of    Wells. Solomon Judson had a wife Naomi but it has not been ascertained if she was the mother of his    children. William was enumerated in Wells in 1820 with three males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one    male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), one male of age twenty six and under age forty    five (b. 1776-94), one female under age ten (b. 1811-20), one female of age twenty six and under age    forty five (b. 1776-94). Residence in 1820 was on warrant parcel 1394 in the western portion of the    township in an area compring what became known as Judson Hill. Asa Pierce, Samuel Seeley, Jr.,    and John Davy were also residing on this warrant. Asa Pierce had m. William’s sister Mahala and    Samuel Seeley, Jr., was William’s brother. Sarah d. 4 Aug 1825 Wells. There is no marker in Wells    Township and Sarah’s place of interment is unknown. William m. Clarissa Budd b. 1791-1800.    Enumerated in Wells in 1830 with one male under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age five and    under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), two males of age    fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one   female under age five (b. 1826-30), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female   of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b.    1811-15), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). On 6 Aug 1831 William    Seeley and Clarissa his wife deeded (Bradford County deed 9:413) 200 acres on warrant parcel 1394    to John Strong in trust for Ann Strong of Wells. William signed by mark and Clarissa signed her    name. On 22 Sept 1838 William and Clarissa deeded (Bradford County deed 15:200) 400 acres to    Elijah Stowell and Lorenzo Grinnell, being a lot of land conveyed to Alfred Seeley by warrant 30 July   1831 by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and deeded to William by Alfred 30 Apr 1836,     excepting a lot containing 50 acres deeded to Charles Seeley on 15 Dec 1837 (Bradford County deed    14:179) and a lot of 70 acres deeded to Alfred Seeley on 30 Apr 1836 (Bradford County deed 13:172).   William signed by mark and Clarissa signed her name. William was a non-resident on the 1839    assessment (compiled fall of 1838) of Wells and on the 1840 assessment is the notation “moved out.”    They removed to Illinois and Clarissa is presumed to have d. enroute or shortly after their arrival.    William was of Coles County (that portion that became Cumberland County), Illinois when he    purchased 80 acres on 5 Oct 1839. Enumerated in Coles County (that portion that became     Cumberland County), Illinois in 1840 as William Selly, no township listed, with one male under age    five (b. 1836-40), three males of age five and under age ten (b. 1831-35), one male of age ten and    under age fifteen (b. 1826-30), one male of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1811-20), one male of    age fifty and under age sixty (b. 1781-90), and two females of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1826-   30). There was no wife enumerated in the household. William m. 14 Aug 1841 (Illinois marriage    record) in Coles County, Illinois, Susan Belsher (Belcher). William was enumerated in Woodbury    Precinct, Cumberland County, Illinois in 1850, age 71, born New Jersey, with wife Mary, age 46,    and son, William in the household. Several of William’s other children were enumerated in nearby h   households. There was a Susan Belsher, age 35, enumerated in Woodbury Precinct, Cumberland    County, in 1850 with children in her household. William is related to have been married seven times.   William d. 24 Oct 1858 80y 2m 28d (ts) Farmer Cemetery, Sumpter Township, Cumberland County,    Illinois. His age on his marker would place his birth at an earlier date than given in census records.

Possible child of William and a first wife:
  103.  Benjamin Seely b. 2 Nov 1804 New York.

  Children of William and Sarah:
  104.  Alfred W. Seeley b. 2 Jan 1812 New York.
  105.  Charles Seeley b. 9 June 1814 Wells.
   106.  Calista N. Seeley b. 10 June 1816 Wells was enumerated in Southport, Chemung County, New      York in 1850, age 34. Enumerated in the 1855 state census of Southport. DEATH: At the      residence of Abner Wells, Esq., of Wellsburgh, on the 23d of December, Miss Calista Seeley,      aged forty-six years (Elmira Gazette, Elmira, New York, Saturday, December 29, 1860).
  107.  Jonas Seeley b. 30 Dec 1818 Wells.
  108.  Lewis Seeley b. 9 Apr 1821 Wells.
  109.  Mahala Seeley b. 25 Nov 1823 Wells.

  Children of William and Clarissa:
  110.  son b. c. 1826 (1830 and 1840 census).
  111.  Evaline Seeley b. 1 Sept 1827 Wells.
  112.  Fanny M. Seeley b. 28 July 1828 Wells.
  113.  son b. c. 1830 (1840 census).
  114.  Shadrock Seeley b. c. 1832 Wells.
  115.  John Willard Seeley b. 25 July 1834 Wells.
  116.  William Henry Seeley b. 8 July 1836 Wells.

12.  Samuel Seeley, Jr., b. perhaps c. 1784 (he must have been b. in 1784 or earlier as he was of age    on 13 July 1805 when he witnessed a deed - Tioga County Deed 2:327) appears on the 1808     assessment list of Tioga Township, Luzerne County (Wells Township had not yet been created) and    was perhaps residing in that portion that became Wells Township. Cousins, Benjamin Seeley and    Lewis Seeley also appeared on the same assessment list. Samuel is not enumerated as a head of    household in 1810. Samuel first appears on the 1820 assessment list (compiled fall of 1819) of Wells,   single, residing on warrant parcel 1394 (present Judson Hill area in the western portion of the    township). Still single on the 1823 assessment list. On the 1824 assessment he is not noted as single.    On the 1825 assessment list is the notation “house unoccupied” and he does not appear after that date   until the 1832 assessment list (compiled fall of 1831). On 15 Sept 1835 Samuel Seeley of Wells    deeded (quit claim) 87 acres in Wells to Mercy Seeley of Southport, Chemung County, New York.    The deed does not state that Mercy was his mother, but she would be the only known possibility.    Enumerated in Wells in 1840, residing on Judson Hill. Samuel last appears on the 1849 assessment    list of Wells, d. 1849 in Wells (Bradford County Decedent 694), no marker. Almira Seeley, widow of   Samuel Seeley, renounced her right to adminster the estate 18 Sept 1849 and requested Orr Smith    (son of Julia Seeley and Solomon Little Smith) be appointed. Almira signed by mark. On 20 Sept    1849 Orr Smith was appointed administrator. Inventory taken 3 Oct 1849. Almira Seeley, age 55, was   enumerated in Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1850 in the home of her daughter    Martha Jane Seeley and her husband Cornelius C. Daggett.

  117.  Martha Jane Seeley b. 3 Apr 1830.
  118.  son b. 1831-35.
  119.  son b. 1836-40.

  A. Jackson Seeley, age 11, enumerated in the household of Shadrack Thompson and Aurelia Smith    in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1850. He was perhaps the son above b. 1836-   40. Aurelia Smith was the daughter of Julia Seeley and Solomon Smith and a niece of Samuel.    Jackson was enumerated in Wells Township in 1870, age 32; with wife Emma (Emila on daughter’s    cemetery marker), age 27; daughter, Elizabeth, age 7; daughter, Mary J., age 9 months. Jackson d.    27 Dec 1872 32y 9m 24d (ts) Judson Hill Cemetery, Wells Township. Mary d. 25 Apr 1874 4y 7m    (ts) Judson Hill Cemetery. Jackson d. intestate (Bradford County Decedent 2458) 27 Dec 1872 Wells.    Emily Seeley, widow, renounced her right to administer the estate and requested F. P. Bowman and    Henry C. French be appointed, witnessed by F. H. Brink. Inventory by James H. Brink and C. H.    Titus.

13.  James Seeley b. 178_ is related to have m. Sarah Smith, sometimes known as Sally, b. 178_    daughter of Timothy Smith and Fanny Little. It needs to be confirmed that it was this James Seeley    who married Sarah Smith, since there were three James Seeley’s, all cousins, all b. 1781-90 and    difficulty arises in determining where each James resided and determining their families.

The Will of Timothy Smith dated 25 Apr 1809 Tioga County, New York (resided Seeley Creek    Valley in that portion that became the Town of Southport, Chemung County, New York) directed son   Job Smith “shall give unto James Seely and Sarah Seely $200 if they will accept it.” Timothy does not   specifically call Sarah his daughter, but it is assumed that she was. The Will was probated 10 May    1809 and there are signed receipts and releases in the estate file for other beneficiaries named in the    Will, but none for James and Sarah. James and Sarah were thus married prior to 25 Apr 1809 and he    is perhaps the James Seeley enumerated in Elmira, Tioga (that portion that became Chemung    County), New York in 1810 residing in the Seeley Creek Valley with a daughter under the age of five   in their household and enumerated next to the households of Israel Seeley and Samuel Seeley, both of   who had sons named James.

James and Sarah removed to Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. James first    appears on the 1816 assessment (compiled fall of 1815) list of Columbia Township, Bradford County,   Pennsylvania, with the notation of acreage acquired from Adam Seeley, which occurred Feb 1817    (Liber 4:1). On the 1817 assessment list (compiled fall of 1816) James Seely and James Seely, Jr (son    of James Seeley and Ann Westlake) appear.

On 29 Nov 1817 James Seely the 3rd of Columbia Township, Bradford County and Sally his wife, conveyed two parcels of 54 acres    and 58 acres to John H. Knapp, land in the town of Elmira, Tioga County, New York. Signed James Seely the 3d and Sally Seely    (Tioga County Deeds 4:369).

James Seely and James Seely, Jr., continue to appear on assessment lists of Columbia Township. On    the 1820 assessment list there is listed James Seely and Seely & Gaylord, the latter evidently some    type of business and presumed to be James Seely, Jr., and Aaron Gaylord, as James Seeley Jr., m.    Laura Gaylord, sister to Aaron Gaylord and Aaron Gaylord m. Jemima Seeley sister to James Seeley,    Jr. On the 1822 assessment are the names James Seeley, Jr., and James Seeley 3rd. Other than the    1817 deed this is the only assessment list in which he appears as James Seeley 3rd. On the 1824    assessment list (compiled fall of 1823) James Seeley, Jr., had transfered 170 acres to Bartlett Seeley    and appears on the 1824 assessment list of neighboring Wells Township, which is consistent with the    known fact that James Seeley, Jr., removed to Wells Township. James Seeley continues to appear on    the Columbia assessment lists until 1827 when he assessed for 2 oxen and 2 cows. James does not    appear in later assessment records of Wells or does he appear in neighboring Wells Township where    his cousins James Seeley, Jr., and James Seeley 2d (son of Israel Seeley and Milicent Strong) were    residing.

In 1830, all three cousins with the name James Seeley were enumerated in Wells Township. One ws    enumerated as James Seeley and the other two as James Seeley, Jr. Though there were three James    Seeleys enumerated in Wells in 1830 at no time do three appear on the assessment lists. James Seeley,   Jr., and James Seeley (son of Israel Seeley and Milicent Strong) continue to appear on assessment    lists of Wells, but there is no further record of James and Sarah.

James Seeley, son of Israel Seeley and Milicent Strong, is known to have removed to Athens,    Bradford County and he had a son Nathaniel Seeley. From the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census     enumerations, one of the three James Seeley’s had no sons enumerated in the household, and since it    is known that James Seeley, Jr., son of James Seeley and Ann Westlake had a son Albert and his    cousin James had a son Nathaniel, the following children are assigned to James and Sarah. If correct,    James was enumerated in Tioga County  (that portion that became Chemung County), New York in    1810, Columbia Township, Bradford County in 1820, and Wells Township, Bradford County in 1830.   Further research is needed.

  120.  daughter b. 1805-10.
  121.  daughter b. 1811-15, perhaps Julia Seeley b. 1813 (census) 1815 (ts).

     125.  daughter b. 1821-25.

15.  Lydia Seeley b. 23 Jan 1789 is placed as a daughter of Samuel and Mercy when it states in the    History of Waverly, New York that “he (William Ellis) married Lydia daughter of Samuel Seeley of    Orange County, and later of Seeley Creek, near Elmira, New York.” In the Historical Gazette of    Tioga County, Lydia is related to be a daughter of Israel Seeley. The 1800 census of Israel Seeley’s    household has no female of Lydia’s age bracket in the family. Lydia m. William Ellis b. 12 June    1787 the first white child b. in the Town of Nichols, Tioga County, New York son of Ebenezer Ellis    and Elizabeth McCullough. William and Lydia resided in what became the Town of Barton, Tioga    County, New York. Enumerated in Tioga County, New York in 1810 with two sons under age ten in    their household. William d. 26 Sept 1848 61y 8m 12d (ts). Lydia was enumerated in Barton in    1850 in the household of daughter Sarah Swartwood. Lydia d. 26 Mar 1874 85y 2m 3d (ts) Emory    Chapel Cemetery. Their markers are in the front row behind the church. William, Lydia, and children   Julia M., Ransom, Julia Ann, and Harriet all have markers in a row beside each other. Ransom and    Julia Ann are on one marker. There are no unmarked graves that would indicate burials for their    children who are related to have d. young. Son, William T. Ellis, wife, and two children are buried in   the next row behind William and Lydia.

16.  Bartlett Seeley b. 29 Mar 1791 appears in 1813 on the first assessment of Wells Township, Bradford   County, Pennsylvania. He served in the War of 1812 from 1 July 1814 to 30 Sept 1814 as a private in    Captain Claudius V. Boughton’s Company of New York State Volunteer Cavalry. Bartlett m.    Charity Read Capron b. 10 May 1794 daughter of Jeremiah Capron and Jerusha Hartshorn.    Charity’s brother Joseph Capron also removed to Wells. In 1823 Bartlett transfered his holdings in Wells to his cousin, James    Seeley, Jr., for those improvements James had made in neighboring Columbia Township, Bradford    County. Bartlett first appears on the 1825 assessment list (compiled fall of 1824) of Columbia.   Enumerated in Columbia in 1830 with two males under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age five    and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of    age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25),    two females of age ten and under age fifteen (1816-20), one female of age thirty and under age forty    (b. 1791-1800). 26.  Benjamin Seeley b. 31 Dec 1778 m. his cousin Permelia Edsall b. 30 Nov 1788 daughter of Samuel   Edsall and Sarah Seeley. They are related to have settled in 1808 in Wells at Aspinwall from    Southport, Chemung County, New York. Benjamin appears on the 1808 assessment list of Tioga    Township (Wells Township had not yet been created), Luzerne County, most likely residing in that    portion that became Wells. They returned the short distance into New York as Benjamin was    enumerated in the Seeley Creek Valley in what is now the present Town of Southport in 1810 with    three children in their household, two males under age ten (b. 1801-10) and one female under age ten   (b. 1801-10).

On 20 Oct 1810 James Seely of the town of Elmira, County of Tioga and Sally his wife conveyed 90 acres to Benjamin Seeley of the   same place, tract of land lying on Seely Creek granted to the Seelys. Signed James Seely and Sally Seely (Tioga County Deed    3:314).

On 14 May 1812 Benjamin Seely and Permelia his wife of the town of Elmira, County of Tioga conveyed 90 acres of land in the    Town of Elmira on Seely Creek to Solomon L. Smith. Signed Benjamin Seely and Permelia Seely (Tioga County Deed 3:516).

Benjamin appears on the 1813 assessment list (compiled fall of 1812) of Wells. Benjamin also    appears on the 1813 assessment list of Smithfield Township as a “new settler.” Columbia Township    was formed from Smithfield Township and part of their land was in Columbia Township at     Aspinwall (now Coryland). Benjamin acquired land (Liber 4:2) in Dec 1814 in Wells from the    William Bingham Trustees. On the 1818 assessment list, Benjamin was a constable. Enumerated in    Wells in 1820 with one male under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age ten and under age sixteen    (b. 1805-10), one male of age sixteen and under age eighteen (b. 1802-4), one male of age sixteen and   under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), four females under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age    ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10) in their household. They continued to reside in Wells. In Dec    1854 Benjamin and Permelia deeded land (Liber 44:36) to George Beckwith. Benjamin last appears    on the 1855 assessment list (compiled fall of 1854). Enumerated in the 1855 state census of     Southport, Benjamin born Orange County, two years in the town, Permelia born Chemung County,    daughter Ellen in their household born Pennsylvania. Enumerated in Southport in 1860, daughter    Frances residing with them. Benjamin d. 8 Sept 1864 85y 8m 8d (ts). His death record in the 1865    state census gives the same date, age 86, palsy, born New York. Permelia resided town of Southport    in 1865, mother of twelve children (1865 census enumeration), d. 6 Sept 1866 77y 9m 7d (ts) buried    with Benjamin in Pine City Cemetery, Southport, Chemung County, New York. Daughters Sarah and   Ellen and grandson John Learned are buried on the lot with Benjamin and Permelia.

A quit claim deed (46:146) of 143 acres indentifies some of the children of Benjamin and Permelia as   Frances Ranney, Alfred Seely, Alexander Seely, Aletta Learned, Sally Colony, Milicent McCormick,    Emily J. Badger, Elizabeth Bravoo, and Ellen Seely being the heirs at law of Lewis Seely, dec’d.

On the 1865 New York state census enumeration, Permelia was the mother of twelve children, but    some records indicate she may have had more children. The 1865 state census was to refer to all    children, living or deceased and sometimes the enumeration only refered to living children, which    cannot be the case with Permelia, since she had only at least eleven children living in 1865. On the    1810 census enumeration, Benjamin and Permelia were the parents of two sons under the age of ten.    It is known that Alexander and Alfred were sons. Caleb is not named as a son in the above quit claim    deed.

  224.  Caleb Seeley b. 1802 Southport.
  225.  Alexander Seeley b. c. 1804.
  226.  Alfred Seeley b. c. 1806 Southport.
  227.  Aletta Seeley b. 19 Aug 1807 Southport.

  233.  son b. 1811-20, perhaps c. 1820 (1820 census).
  234.  Lewis Seeley b. Mar 1821 appears on the 1846 assessment list of Wells with his brother in law,     Hiram M. Ranney, d. 2 Apr 1848 27y 11d (ts) Coryland Cemetery, Wells Township.
  235.  Adaline A. Seeley b. c. 1827.
  236.  daughter b. 1826-30 (1830 census).
  237.  Ellen M. Seeley b. 3 Oct 1831 Wells.
  238.  Harrison Seeley b. c. 1833.

27.  James Seeley b. c. 1781 had a wife Sarah, often known by the common nickname of Sally. She could   be Sarah Smith daughter of Timothy Smith and Fanny Little of Newtown, Tioga County (that portion   that became Southport, Chemung County), New York though his cousin James (son of Samuel Seeley   and Mercy Bartlett) is related to have m. Sarah Smith, but confusion could have arisen with earlier    researchers, because of the three James Seeleys (James son of James Seeley and Ann Westlake, James   son of Israel Seeley and Millicent Strong and James son of Samuel Seeley and Mercy Bartlett) who    were cousins and all b. in the same time frame of 1781-90.

On 25 Apr 1807 Israel Seeley of the town of Newtown, County of Tioga and Millicent his wife conveyed to “his son” James Seely of   Newtown 90 acres in Newtown on Seely Creek, being part of land granted to Nathaniel Seely, bounded by lands in possession of    Samuel Seely and Adam Seely. Witnessed by Nathaniel Seely, David Mapes, and Benjamin Seely. Signed Israel Seely and Millicent    Seely (Tioga County Deed 3:30).

On 20 Oct 1810 James Seely of the town of Elmira, County of Tioga and Sarah his wife conveyed to Benjamin Seely of the same, 90   acres lying on Seely Creek and part of a tract granted to the Seelys. Signed James Seely and Sarah Seely (Tioga County Deed    3:314).

These deeds prove that Israel and Milicent had a son James and that James had a wife Sarah and they   conveyed property to his brother Benjamin Seeley. James has not been located on the 1820 census    enumeration.

James Seeley 2d  first appears on the 1827 assessment lists of Wells Township, Bradford County,    Pennsylvania. In 1828 he is called James 2d, but not thereafter, to distinguish him from his two    cousins James Seeley, Jr (son of James Seeley and Ann Westlake) and James Seeley 3rd (son of    Samuel Seeley and Mercy Bartlett).

In 1830, he was one of the three James Seeley’s enumerated in Wells Township. One was enumerated   as James Seeley and the other two as James Seeley, Jr. James was listed as James Seeley, Jr., with one   male under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of   age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one    female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty    (b. 1811-15), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). Though there were three    James Seeleys enumerated in Wells in 1830 at no time do three appear on the assessment lists.

In the Reporter Journal, Towanda, Pennsylvania, Thursday, May 14, 1885 appeared the following    under the heading of Wells Township -

Israel Seeley’s children were Benjamin, James, Lettie, Eunice, Strong, and Lewis. Benjamin Seeley moved to Southport, N.Y.,    where he died; James died at Athens, Pa.; Lettie died at Southport, a maiden lady; Eunice married Aaron Hatfield, and died in    Indiana; Strong died in Elmira; Lewis went West and is supposed to be dead.

The above helps to determine that he was the James Seeley who continued to be assessed in Wells    along with James Seeley, Jr., until his removal to Athens Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.    On the 1832 and 1834 assessment lists, James was referred to as James I. Seeley, the “I” being for    Israel, his father, though he probably did not carry a middle name or initial, but it was a practice used   infrequently to distinguish various family members. James was asssessed in Wells until 1840    (compiled December 1839) when he transfered his property in southern Wells near Aspinwall (now    Coryland) to Nathan Shepard. The family removed to Orcutt Creek (now known as Wilawana),    Athens Township, Bradford County. Enumerated in Athens in 1840 with one male of age 10 and    under age 15 (b. 1826-30), one male of age 50 and under age 60 (b. 1781-90), two females of age 15    and under age 20 (b. 1821-25), one female of age 40 and under age 50 (b. 1791-1800). James first    appears on the 1841 assessment list of Athens Township with 10 improved acres, 90 unimproved    acres, one house, one cow, and one horse. Beginning in 1843 he was assessed for one cow and no    other personal or real property. On the 1848 assessment list Benjamin Seely also appears, assessed for   one cow and on the 1849 assessment Benjamin had “moved out of the town.” James was enumerated    in Athens Township in 1850, age 71, in the household of his daughter Jane Sible and family. On the    1850 assessement a William Seely also appears with one cow. The 1851 assessment of Athens    Township was concluded in Dec 1850 and on the 1852 assessment taken in Nov 1851, James is    “dead,” his death occuring sometime in 1851 or Dec 1850. The earliest burials in the Wilawana    Cemetery near their residence with an inscribed marker are from the 1870’s and in this cemetery son    Nathaniel Seeley is buried, but William’s death predates the cemetery and his place of interment or    that of Sarah who evidently d. in the 1840’s is unknown. The Dutchtown Cemetery is west of    Wilawana in the town of Chemung and Daniel Orcutt who died in 1848 and his family are buried    there who resided near the Seely family.

  243.  Nathaniel Seeley b. c. 1830 Pennsylvania.

28.  Strong Seeley b. 16 Sept 1786, served War of 1812, appears on the first assessment of Wells    Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1813.   246.  William Hoffman Seeley b. c. 1832.
  247.  Hiram H. Seeley b. 1836.

29.  Lewis Seeley b. perhaps 1785-90 (he was of age in 1807 when he witnessed a deed) appears on the    1808 assessment list of Tioga Township, Luzerne County (Wells Township, Bradford County had not   yet been created) most likely residing in that portion that became Wells. He is related to have “gone    west.” There was a Lewis Seeley enumerated in Genesee Township, Genesee County, Michigan in    1840 b. 1771-80 with a male b. 1821-25 and a female b. 1771-80 in the household. This Lewis Seeley   should be researched. He acquired 40 acres on 5 Sept 1838 in Genesee County.

33.  James Seeley Jr., b. 14 July 1782 is related to have returned to Orange County, New York and he    may be the James Seeley who m. 14 July 1804 (Goshen, Orange County, New York Presbyterian    Church) Sarah Townsend. James returned and m. 2 June 1814 (2)Laura Gaylord b. 5 Jan 1794    daughter of Lemuel Gaylord and Sylvia Murray of Wells Township, Bradford County,     Pennsylvania. James first appears on the 1817 assessment list of Columbia Township, Bradford    County, Pennsylvania. Enumerated in Columbia Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania in 1820    next to Laura’s brother Aaron Gaylord and the ages of children seem to match some of his known    children. James and Laura removed to neighboring Wells Township, Bradford County. In the    Reporter Journal, Towanda, Pennsylvania, Thursday, May 28, 1885 appeared the following under the    heading of Wells Township:

“James Seely came to this township in 1823, and lived on the place now owned by G. Goff, and occupied by G. B. Goodwin. Mr.    Seely traded his improvements in Columbia township, with his cousin Bartlett Seely, for those he had made in Wells. James Seely    was born in Orange county, N. Y. When he was six years old his father James Seely, Sr., moved to the Chemung flats, and purchased   a large farm within three miles of Elmira. After remaining there for a few years he moved to Jackson, Tioga Co., Pa., where he died.    James then went back to Orange county, then came back and took up a farm in Columbia township, married and resided there until    the time as above mentioned. Mr.Seely died with his son Alber(t) in 1878, at the age of 94 years. He had a family of five children.    Sally married Ruben Lafever, and died in New York State. Zevira died a maiden lady. Harriet M. married Rev. John Seely (no    relation) and resided near Rochester, N.Y., Ellen married Enoch Copley and resided at Louisville, Tenn. Albert resides in Wells near    the State line. James Seely was a cousin of Benjamin Seely.”

We are uninformed of who furnished the above information to the reporter for the newspaper, but it    was perhaps son Albert who was living in Wells in 1885. On the 1824 assessment list (compiled fall    of 1823) of Columbia Township, James transfered 170 acres to Bartlett Seeley. His name continues to   appear on the assessment lists of Columbia, owning acreage, but no improvements. James first    appears on the 1824 assessment list of Wells. James purchased (5:100) a farm of 138 acres in the    Seeley Creek Valley, Wells Township, from Solomon Judson “lately in possession of Bartlett Seely    and more in possession of James Seely, Jr.” James purchased the third farm from the state line of 96    acres in the Seeley Creek Valley on 27 Mar 1824 known as the Horton lot. James was one of the three   James Seeley’s enumerated in Wells in 1830. James acquired 400 acres on 27 Mar 1832 that had been   surveyed 30 July 1831. James Seeley, Jr., and Laura his wife deeded (Liber 12:486) 199 acres (taking    out 30 acres) in Columbia Township on warrant parcels 1376 and 1377 to Joseph H. DeWitt of    Frankford, Sussex County, New Jersey, dated 4 May 1836. On 20 July 1836 James Seeley, Jr., and    Laura his wife deeded (Liber 12:601) 96 acres known as the Horton lot which was acquired 20 Mar    1824 to Whittington Sayre. On 15 June 1839 James deeded (Liber l6:185) 30 acres, part of land    deeded by James to Joseph H. DeWitt, to Reuben Lafever of Reading, Steuben County, New York. On   27 July 1840 James and Laura of Wells Township deeded (Liber 17:264) 28 acres to Whittington    Sayre of Southport. James last appears on the 1848 assessment list of Wells. Enumerated in     Southport, Chemung County, New York in 1850, farmer. James again appears on the 1852 and 1853    assessment lists of Wells, but not 1854. Enumerated in the 1855 state census of the town of Elmira,    James and Laura residing with son Albert and family, one year in town. James again appears on the    1858 assessment list of Wells. Laura d. 1859 (ts). James enumerated with son Albert in 1870 in    Wells, age 88. James d. 25 Sept 1875 93y 2m 11d (ts) buried with Laura in Pine City Cemetery,    Southport, Chemung County, New York.   Mrs. Hannah Seely, whose decease was briefly noted in the Advocate a few weeks since, was the    mother of a large family of children, namely: Lyman Seely of Lyndon, Illionois; Samuel and Polly,    who lived with their mother on the farm; Mrs. Alvira Trowbridge; Mrs. L. C. Retan, who died in    1875; and Mrs. Elmira Murdough, four of whom survive her. Mrs. Seely was a daughter of Captain    Sam Miller who immigrated to this county in the year 1800 and settled on what is known as the    Arnold Farm in Millerton. It was a dense wilderness at that time; and he with his fathers and five    brothers, with their household goods loaded on wagons drawn by oxen and horses and driving their    cattle before them, cut their way through the forest from what is now Elmira to the place of     settlement. They left the level and fertile valley of the Chemung and pushed their way through the    forest of Pennsylvania for the reason that the latter was a better hunting ground, the land was more    heavily timbered and they were not so much exposed to Indian attacks, as they stood in some fear of a   tribe of Senecas who dwelt near Lake Seneca. Hammonds Creek was then full of trout, deer and bear    were plentiful. The settler could go out for a half hour before breakfast and return with one or two of    the latter. Captain Sam was a great hunter and a prominent man among the early settlers of Tioga    County, helping to establish the county seat, and in 1835 he helped draw the stone for the court house   at Wellsboro. His tombstone in Millerton Cemetery bears the following inscription: Captain Samuel    Miller The Pioneer of this Town, resided here 57 years, died Sept. 16th, 1856, aged 71 years and 4    months. The Napolean of hunters, the kind and affectionate relative and the generous friend. This    humble monument, erected by friends who knew him long and well, is designed to claim a tribute to    well merited respect from their descendants and his posterity (Millerton Advocate newspaper).
