Wren's Nest Note Paper |
|
Here is an excerpt from a note by Al which will be expanded:
I have a history started on the the Wren's Nest, so I'll get
with it and finish it up. I can tell you that it was built in 1854
by Dr. Joseph P. Morris from the plans of an English Cottage. Joseph
had been sent to the area in 1835 from Philadelphia to assist his cousin
Benjamin managing the country estates and look after the family interests.
Benjamin was married to Mary Wells (For whom Wellsboro was named).
The house was expanded over the years until about the 90's when it reached
it's final form. Of course there were changes between then and now.
Joseph had his hands in many ventures around the county and was supposedly
the first Postmaster in Blossburg. He also started the coal company
and railroad there. Hence the town names of Morris and Morris Run.
He donated the land where the University now stands. He also gave
the land and help fund the building of St. James Episcopal Church.

| Note from Al Walker, "The picture of the Thompson/Swan/Morris group
was taken about 1896 near the big screened porch on the NE side of the
house. I can remember those tennis rackets hanging in the woodshed
when I was growing up. "
