Generation No. 1
1. ANDREW2 BRENNAN (BRENNAN1)1,2 was born in Ireland, and died Unknown. He married CATHY MAHER2. She died Unknown.
Notes for ANDREW BRENNAN:
The Tithe Allotment Book for 1827 shows an Andrew and William Brennan with land in the townland of Gurteen, County Tipperary Ireland. Griffiths/Primary Valuation List for 1849 shows an Andrew Brennan as tenant farmer on land owned by Lady Elizabeth Lovett in the townland of Rathcriddoge, Parish of Rahelty. There is another Andrew Brennan tenant farmer on land owned by Rev. William Hill in the townland of Gorteenmagher, Parish of Templeree.
There is no conclusive evidence as to the relationship of these Brennans to the Andrew Brennan who immigrated to the US in 1849 with his wife Mary Treacy and their two sons Patrick and James. All we know for sure is that these locations were very near Moyne and the Templetouhy parish, and its Roman Catholic Church, where Andrew and Mary were married in 1839 and where their three sons, Patrick, James (died as an infant) and James were baptized. We believe that Andrew's parents were Andrew Brennan and Cathy (Catherine ?) Maher though the marriage certificate could not be located. We also believe that Andrew and Cathy had four children: Andrew (who immigrated with Mary Treacy) b:1809; Ellen born 1811 and Philip born 1813. There is evidence of Ellen and Philip's baptisms in the Templetouhy RC church. The absence of a baptism record for our Andrew may be due to the fact that baptism records commenced in 1809. The fourth child is John "Brinnin", as his name was spelled after he immigrated to the US and Bradford County. There is a John Brennan buried adjacent to Andrew Brennan's gave at the State Rd. Cemetery in Bradford County PA Henry Farley of the Bradford County Historical Society (BCHS) also claims that John and Andrew were brothers. One of John's descendants (see footnotes re: John Brennan) provided the information on his family.
Perhaps someday someone will be able to determine with more certainty the Brennan ancestry ties prior to Andrew and Mary Treacy's immigration in 1849.
Children of ANDREW BRENNAN and CATHY MAHER are:
ii. ELLEN BRENNAN3, b. Abt. April 1811; d. Unknown.
Notes for ELLEN BRENNAN:
Baptized at Templetouhy RC parish on April 27, 1811. Sponsors were Tim Fogarty and Ellen Shelley. No further information on Ellen.

iv. PHILIP BRENNAN3, b. Abt. September 1813, Tipperary, Ireland4; d. Unknown.

2. JOHN3 BRENNAN (ANDREW2, BRENNAN1)6 was born Abt. 1798 in Ireland, and died April 15, 1855. He married JOANNA FOGARTY. She was born 1812 in Ireland7, and died September 08, 18558.
Notes for JOHN BRENNAN:
H.C. Bradsby's "History of Bradford County With Biographical Selections";Chicago; S.B. Nelson & Co. Publishers; 1891 states that ..."there were 13 children in the family, of whom subject (John) is the seventh."
From 1850 Standing Stone Census ( Oct 10 1850)
44 44 John "Brannin" 58(?) M Farmer Ireland
Julia 38 F Ireland
Timothy 9 M Ireland
Bridget 6 F Ireland
Andrew 1 M PA
Andrews age and birth place suggests possibility that the family immigrated in 1849 or prior; perhaps they came with John's Brother Andrew and his family: Mary; James; Patrick. The 1920 Monroe Township, Bradford, PA Census (E.D.#23; Ancestry #8) for Patrick F. Brennan, then the 82 year old son of John, states that Patrick immigrated (with parents assumed) in 1848/49-hard to read but looks like 1848. Where is Patrick during the above 1850 census? He would have been abt 13. Laborer on another farm?
John and Julia both died in 1855; unknown cause. Note: there was a nationwide Yellow Fever epidemic in 1855.
Andrew "Brinnin" age 11 found in the 1860 Standing Stone Census (999,939), Image # 11 of 24, at the farm of Thomas VanNep age 39 who was born in NJ. Deborah, his wife, was also 39 and born in PA Their daughter Margett was 13. Also found at the same residence was Eliza Hoover, age 3.
No record was found for Timothy Brennan, who would
be about 19 at the time of the 1860 Census, nor his sisters Bridget (16)
and Johanna (7). It is curious that none of the children were at Andrew
Brennan's farm at this time as we are assuming that Andrew was their uncle.
Another mystery.

Notes for JOANNA FOGARTY:
Per Bradsby, there were 13 children in the family with son Patrick the seventh. A Tim FOGARTY was a baptism sponsor for Ellen Brennan, dau of Andrew and Cathy Maher Brennan, on April 27, 1811 at the R.C. Templetuohy parish, Tipperary, Ireland. Probable relative of Johannah.

We know from US naturalization records that Andrew, Mary and their two sons, Patrick and James arrived in the port of New York in (August?) 1849. At that time Andrew would be approx. 40; Mary approx. 28; Patrick approx. 6 and James approx. 3 year old. Searches of passenger lists for immigration ships arriving at that time in NY have turned up one possibility. The ship "Washington" arrived in the port of New York on or about May 1 1849. Her skipper was J. H. Burleigh and the ship carried 156 passengers. The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild consists of volunteers who transcribe the hand written declaration of passengers and cargo which the ship's master prepares for the Collector of Customs in NY at that time. A ISTG volunteer transcribed the Ship Washington's manifest on October 27, 1999 from NARA film M237, Reel 78. The following is of interest:
# Name Age Sex
50 Mr. Brennan 40 M
51 Cath Brennan 28 F
52 James Brennan 5 M
53 Patrick Infant M
Realizing that errors were highly common in the preparation of these lists and, sometimes, by the transcribers, one might assume that Mr. Brennan was Andrew; that Cath was Mary Treacy with perhaps Catherine as a middle or nick name and that they reversed James and Patrick ages. Yes, it is a stretch!
Hopefully someone in the future will either confirm this or delete it from the family history should it prove to be incorrect.
Note: July 2002 - Checked all passengers arriving in NYC during August 1849 using Vol. IV of the "Famine Immigrants", Ed by Ira Glazer et al. While lots of Brennans, and other spelling derivations, did not find the Andrew Brennan family per se.
Note: The Ship Sir Harry Smith arrived in NYC from Liverpool in Sept 1849 with a lot of "Brannons" on board.
We find the family living in Towanda Township at the time of the 1850 census (78,80) which was performed in August of that year:
SURNAME FIRST NAME AGE SX RE$ OCCUPAT. BRN FAM# PG#
Brinin Andrew 38 M Laborer IRE 80 21 (could not read or write)
Brinin Mary 29 F IRE 80 21
Brinin Patrick 7 M IRE 80 21
Brinin James 3 M IRE 80 21
1860 Standing Stone Census (visited Brennans on July 4). By now Mary had died and Andrew had married Catherine Lynch:
Andrew 48 M Farmer Ireland
Catherine 40 F Ireland
Patrick 17 M Ireland
James 14 M Ireland
(Patrick & James were sons of Andrew and Mary, Andrew's first wife)
Margaret 7 F PA
Bridget 5 F PA
Martin 3 M PA
Mary 2 F PA
Andrew 1/12 M
Mary is not listed in the 1870 Standing Stone Township census so we assume she died sometime between 1860 & 1870.
The 1870 census contains the names of Andrew and Catherine and their children Bridget (14), Martin (13), Andrew Jr. (10)and John (8). Dwelling number was 56 and the Brennans were family # 58. A second family was also noted at the same location. The last name is hard to read but something like "Caugh." The father's name is Michael, age 49, and he was a blacksmith. His wife Bridget was 37. Their 3 children were Patrick (age 6), James (8?) and Mary (6). Michael and Bridget were born in Ireland as were there parents. The children were all born in PA and were attending school at the time of the census. Perhaps Michael knew the Brennans from Ireland and was temporarily residing with the Brennans. No record of him and family could be found in the 1880 Standing Stone census.
By the 1880 census both Andrew and Catherine had died. Martin had married Margaret Grace and they had a farm in Standing Stone (father's place??). They gave their ages as 23 and 22. Also staying with them was Joesph, age 8, and (hard to read) we believe he was Martin's nephew.

"Patrick F. Brennan, farmer, of Monroe township, P.O. Liberty Corners, was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, October 20, 1837, and is a son of John and Johanna (Fogarty) Brennan. There were thirteen children in their family, of whom subject is the seventh. His parents dying in 1855, he began life for himself, farming and teaming, and in 1861 he purchased six acres of land, where he now resides. When he had cleared and paid for this, he purchased more, and so on, until now he has sixty-two acres of well-cultivated land. Notes for PATRICK R. BRENNAN:
Patrick Brennan was baptized Nov 25, 1842 at TEMPLETOUHY RC parish; sponsors were James Treacy and Peggy Delaney. He immigrated to the US in 1849 with his parents Andrew and Mary Tracy Brennan and his younger brother James. In 1850 the family resided in Wysox PA. Mary died in 1851 and Andrew then married Catherine Lynch sometime between then and 1853. By 1860 the growing family was settled in Standing Stone Township.
Patrick was 21 years of age when he enlisted in the US Federal armed forces on April 15, 1864 at Hornellsville (Elmira) NY. Why he traveled over the PA-NY state line to register is not known. On April 23 of that year he mustered into "C" Company NY 179th Infantry as a Private. He was promoted to Corpl 9/1/64 and mustered out on June 8, 1865 near Alexandra VA. In August 1864, near Weldon RR VA. he was disabled by muscular and sciatica rheumatism. He was returned to active duty after treatment by the regimental surgeon. See PP 157 & 337, "Our Boys in Blue", Clement F. Heverly, 1861-1865, for confirmation of Patrick's military service.
The American Civil War was in its 4th year with one bloody year to run when Patrick enlisted. The 179th joined Grant's army at Cold Harbor on June 11, 1864 where it was assigned to the 2nd Brig, 1st Div, 9th Corps. It took an active part in the first assaults on Petersburg in June, losing 11 killed, 70 wounded and 10 missing. During the ensuing Petersburg seige, where both sides were exposed to almost incessant fire, resulting in a daily loss of men, the casualties of the regiment amounted to 62 killed, wounded and missing. Other campaigns that this unit was involved in included Weldon Railrod, Poplar Spring Church (losing 58 men), Hatcher's Run and Fort Stedman. Its last engagement was the storming of Petersburg, April 2, 1865, losing 60 killed, wounded and missing. All of these battles were around Richmond, the CSA Capital which Lee's greatly reduced forces were attempting to defend. Shortly after the Petersburg victory, and Richmond s capitulation, Gen Lee surrendered to Gen Grant.
These battles were some of the most desperate and devastating of the Civil War. It is interesting that after witnessing such massive losses of life and limb Patrick subsequently pursued a medical career and spent his last years practicing medicine in Wysox PA only a few miles from him parent's original homestead at Standing Stone Township.
On June 18, 1871 Patrick married Mary O'Keefe in Towanda. They had one son, John Joseph Brennan, born April 17, 1872. Mary died the following year, November 1873.
In 1878 Patrick received his medical degree from Michigan University. The 1880 census finds his son John Joseph residing with his uncle Martin Brennan in Standing Stone so we can assume that he may have been there while Patrick was at school.
In 1880 Patrick, age 36 and a physician, was a boarder at the James & Mary Gillin/Gillis house In Little Meadows PA. See 1880 Apolocan(Little Meadows & Friendsville),Susquehanna,PA Census (ED116; image #19). No "Dacy" was found in this census. Patrick and Julia Dacy were married August 24, 1881 in Friendsville. Perhaps Julia resided in a surrounding town.
In 1900, per the Wysox Census, Patrick and Julia had been married 20 years and they had 3 children with them in a home that they rented: Charles, age 16, William, age 12 and Mary age 9. Julia states that she was born in PA and that both of her parents were born in Ireland. Patrick's occupation is that of Physician and William and Mary are noted as attending school. Julia also states that she had had 5 children with 3 now living. Julia herself would die in 7 years.

Bradford Argus, 20 Nov 1902 Dr. P. R. Brennan of Wysox, died November 13 of blood poisoning. As long ago as last May he reached down on the floor for something and ran a sliver in his middle finger. He paid little attention to it, but from that small beginning the fatal disease closed his life. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, sixty years ago, and came when a young lad with his parents to the State Road in this county. He studied medicine with Dr. Madill in Wysox, and for many years practiced his profession at Little Meadows, Susquehanna county. About five years ago he removed to Wysox. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the G. A. R. His wife and four children - Joseph of Towanda, Charles, William and Mary of Wysox, survive him. Dr. Brennan in politics was always a Democrat, and as a neighbor and citizen was without reproach. Submitted by Beth A. Williams, bawill@sprynet.com

By 1900, per the Federal Census, James and Ellen had moved north and now resided at 104 Pratt Ave. in Towanda. James was a fireman on the railroad and 6 of their children resided at home:
James, Head, b: Nov 1847(error), age 52 married 30 years, born in Ireland, both parents born in Ireland
Ellen, Wife, b: Nov 1847, age 52, married 30 yrs., 10 children with 7 living, born Ireland as were parents

Bridget, dau, b: Jan? 1876, age 24, single

John, son, b: Oct 1881, age 20, single, day laborer
Edward, son, b: Sept 1884, age 15, son, day laborer
Ellen stated that of her 10 children 7 were alive in 1900. We thus far only know of 8 children. The above 6 plus Mary, born 1871, who married Duggan and was no doubt at her own home by 1900. The other child was Catherine Flood Brennan born in 1886 and would have been 14 at the time of this census and probably had passed away. The other "2" missing children, assuming the 10 figure is correct, must have died young.
1910 Census finds James, age 62, and Ellen, age 62, residing at 104 Pratt Ave. in Towanda. Living with them was their son Thomas E. (Edward), age 25 and single. Thomas was working as a retail merchant. James and Ellen were married 41 years ago. James had immigrated in 1849 and Ellen in 1861? Ellen states that she had had 10 children and 7 were still alive.
Ellen would die in 1914 followed by James in 1917 (see obit below). In 1920 their daughter Bridget Brennan and her husband John Ryan resided at the104 Pratt Ave house.

Bradford Star, 10 Feb 1916 James Brennan - Long a highly esteemed resident of Pratt avenue, died February 3 after an illness of two weeks of pneumonia, aged 69 years. Deceased was a native of Tipperary, Ireland, and came to this country when a child. Nearly his whole life had been spent in railroading in various capacities. He was very successful in his business affairs. A wide circle of friends, besides five sons and two daughters deplore his sudden demise. Funeral services were held from the Church of SS Peter and Paul, Monday morning; the last rites were very impressive, 60 priests participating in the obsequies; interment to the Catholic cemetery, North Towanda. This data raises questions about DOBs and the marriage
date. Note that Bridget had had 7 children and only 3 are still alive.
The question is who is the 3rd child that is still alive? Must have been

Bridget had had 7 children by June 1900 but only 3 were still alive. Catherine, Julia and Helen must have died. They would have been ages 5, 3 and 2. There must have been another child who was born and died before 1900. The absence of the 1890 census data is sorely missed.
This data raises questions about DOBs for John and Bridget and their marriage date.
In the 1910 North Towanda Census (71,71; image #6) at their residence on Webb Ave. we find:

Notes for MARTIN PATRICK BRENNAN:
1880 Census showed Martin as age 23, farmer, residing in Standing Stone Township. Wife Margaret was 22, housekeeper. Margaret's parents both born in Ireland. Joseph, age 8, resided with Martin and Margaret and was a nephew of Martin's. The census was taken June 7, 1880 which was only 2 weeks after Martin and Margaret were married.

Perhaps Joseph was John Joseph Brennan, born April 17, 1872, the only son of Patrick (M.D. in Wysox) and Mary O'Keefe Brennan. Mary had passed away in November 1872 and Patrick had yet to marry his second wife, Mary Dacy. Recall that Patrick and James Brennan were Andrew's sons by his first marriage to Mary Treacy.
Where was John Brennan, Martin's brother? Per Andrew Brennan's will (Andrew died in 1877) Martin was to provide John a home until his 21st birthday. In 1880 John would have been 18. Perhaps he was residing/working at another farm. We know that John ultimately ended up in Sayre and died in 1905 of a heart seizure while on his way to visit his sister Bridget Brennan O'Herron (see John's obit ON FILE)
(The 1890 Federal censuses were almost completely destroyed by fire)

Four of children were no longer living at home: Phillip; Mary Catherine; Martin and Margaret. Gertrude and Martin had been born. The property was a farm owned by Martin with a mortgage. Joseph Willilam ("Will"), the son, age 20 at this time, would be killed in France during WW1 eight years later. The resident family consisted of:

The 1930 Census finds the Brennans relocated from Standing Stone to Huston St. in Towanda-only a few houses away from the Thomas Clancy household where their son Robert, age 32, still resides.
Martin Brennan is 73, and retired, and Margaret is 70. Genevieve, their 28 year old daugther, resides with them and her occupation is that of stenographer in a lawyer's office. Their home is a duplex with the Buffington's (married dau Blanche) living next door. See "Charles Buffington" 1930 Census data (9 children!).
Robert Clancy and G. Genevieve Brennan would marry in 3 years.

Wounded in action in Argonne Forest, Oct 8, 1918 and died shortly after. Buried in Catholic Cemetery in North Towanda. Before entering the army he was employed by Frank Hoyle (?Boyle) in the hotel at Rummerfield.."and a great favorite with the patrons of the place."
William did his basic training at Camp Meade beginning October 5, 1917. He became a member of the 111th Infantry, Co. G, 28th Division. He was transferred to Camp Hancock GA from where he left for France the following May. While in France he he was on the front line much of the time and saw a great deal of hard service. His Division was part of the I corps under Pershing. The American Expeditionary Force began a major attack, referred to as The Meuse-Argonne Offensive, against the Germans on September 26, 1918. Details of this largest American conflict in WWI can be found at www.worldwar1.com/dbc/bigshow.htm.
By this time Bulgaria had signed an armistice and on October 4, 1918 the new German government sent an armistice proposal to President Wilson. It would take the politicians five weeks to agree on the terms of an armistice. During that time it has been estimated that a half million men were killed or wounded, including William Joseph Brennan.

In 1900, per the Census, Andrew and Mary resided at 108 North Fourth St., Towanda, PA. Andrew gave June 1860 as his DOB and his age was listed as 39. He and May (Lane) had been married 10 years. Mary stated that they had 8 children of which only 2 were living. Residing at the house were Isabelle, dau, born Oct 1892 whose age was 7 and Katherine, dau, born May 1897 whose age was 3. Andrew's occupation was that of a tailor.

Andrew and Mary continued to reside on Fourth St. at the time of the 1920 census. Andrew is 57, Mary L. is 55, the daughters Belle and Catherine are 24 & 21 and Andrew Jr. is 14.

He states that his father and mother were born in "Irish free state." Mary gives age as 67 and lists her father as also being born in the Irish Free State with her mother born in PA. 1920 Towanda, Bradford, PA census (E.D. 43; image # 5), The William Brennan family census included Eva, a 24 yr old daughter, and listed below her name was Raymond (Brennan indicated as last name), grandson, age 4. The assumption is Raymond was the son of Eva the daughter.

Questions:
Where is Omenta, daughter from 1920 Census. She would be abt 16 years of age? Could this be "Minnie" Brennan who is buried with her father in Oak Hill Cemetery(see below)?
Where is Eva, daughter from 1920 Census. She would be abt 34? Believe she died in 1921 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery (see below).
Where did Robert serve in the US Army?
Who is R. Donald Laughlin, 9 year old grandson? It is assumed that this is Raymond from the 1920 Census and that he is the son of Eva Brennan who married Loughlin and who died in 1921.

Brennan, Martin Head 63 PA Ireland Ireland
Margaret E. Wife 61 PA Ireland Ireland
Andrew J. son 26
Ambrose son 21

Gertrude G. daughter 16
Martin P. son 14
Genevieve, known as Genny to her friends, worked hard her whole life. She married at age 30 and the family spent the greater part of their lives at 214 Chestnut St. in Towanda. She was a religious woman and never failed to attend service as the SS Peter & Paul RC Church on Third St. where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She ensured that her three sons attended St. Agnes for all 12 years. While there was never much money available her children never lacked nice clothes, toys and an allowance, until they were old enough to earn their own money by mowing lawns and later working in stores in Towanda as teenagers. She cheerfully maintained a happy home which was often filled with the wonderful smells of fresh home baked bread or her famous chocolate pie. After the three boys had grown she resumed secretarial work at the Bradford County Agricultural Extension Office in the Towanda Court House. Following the death of her husband Robert in 1964 she sold the Chestnut St. house and lived in a series of apartments in Towanda for the rest of her life. She became active in the Senior Citizens group and particularly enjoyed the scenic bus trips. She lived to see her three sons graduate from college, marry and start their own families. Considering her humble beginnings on a farm in Standing Stone Township she truly had achieved much in her lifetime.

------------------------------------------------------------
Bob graduated from St. Agnes and learned the trade of electrician at what is now known as RIT and then at the NYC Electrical School. While in New York City he earned money by acting as a chauffeur. He established the Towanda Radio Supply store on Court St. in Towanda where for many years `Stub' Lewis held down the fort repairing radios while Bob was driving about Bradford County doing electrical wiring installation and repair. All three of his sons worked with their father at times during summer school breaks or on weekends.
Though on the quiet side Bob was a kind and tender father and husband. No one in the family recalls him raising his voice or displaying any anger. He was a member of the SS Peter & Paul RC Church and its Holy Name Society. He looked after his mother & father, whose home was very near his, until their deaths.
Along with his wife Genevieve, Bob established a
loving and nurturing home life for his children. What greater thing can
be said for a man or a father.
