Robert Fisher Ducotey

16 April 1916 -- 15 August 1997

As I sit here at my computer on Thursday afternoon August 12, 1993 at age 77 years plus, I'am aware there are two conflicting human attributes working on me is a healthy ego and demands anapology up front not to mention a violation of the old rule, " never begin writing by making excuses!" The second attribute, the more sublime of the two, is a vivid imagination requiring a commitment not to create memories where there are none, but to conceive there really could be someone out there sufficently interested to read what I have written. As I begin, conscious of these contending factors, what else should I expect? especially in a real world where other analogous conditions surrond us with their paradoxes of good and bad, hope and despair, challenge and apathy, our everyday yins and yangs.

However, on April 27, 1988 I attended a genealogical workshop at Akron, Ohio Public Library and listened to the leader recommend that each of us write our recollections of our own lives as a part of our searching for the history of our families. Thus began this effort and , looking back over the 5 1/2 years since then, I must admit that the story-telling has progressed better than the family research.

First of all the family name Ducotey probably should be spelled DuCotey , This not only seems more likely in view of its french origins, but also it's the spelling used by one branch of the family. However, throughout this tale, both spellings are likely to be used interchangeably. Realizing that some Irish Immigration clerk could have mongrelized the name when my paternal grandfather entered the country, we're left guessing what the name really might have been in France. Many American names of foreign origin carry clues of their earlier spellings, occupation of the father or geographical locale of the family. In this light, we might recall the french words "ducote"(from the coast) and " cote de" (as in by the side of with the addition of a word like "river", "sea", or something similar)Who knows what it might have been?

Considering the family name suggest it would be best to start with my father and his ancestors, even though I don't know very much about them. Grandfather was Christian (no middle name) Ducotey who was born in France 1832 and entered this country through the port of New Orleans, Louisiana. His early life is obscure but I did discover there was a well known family identified as "Decote" living in one of the Louisiana parishes in the pre-civil period and have always speculated whether "moon"Ducotey(?), the orginator of the famous "war eagle" cry of Auburn University might have been a distant member of the family. Grandpa made his way up the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, finally settling near White Pine, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Before she married my grandfather, Grandma was Mary S. Besanceney who in 1843 was also born in France. I can recall her telling me that she came through the port of New York, where she began working as a household servant--"French Maid", perhaps. It is unclear how she and Grandpa met, but apparently they were unacquainted in France. Grandpa died in 1911 and grandma on October 19, 1930. Both are buried in the White Pine Cemetery, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

Grandpa was a farmer located near the family of a half brother, one Gus Pequignot, whom I remember visiting when I was quite young. The Pequignots also farmed and were justifiably proud of their livestock, particularly their draft horses which were of percheron (now commonly called Belgian) breed.

My recollections include an attempt to sit astride one of these massive, broad backed, but gentle creatures and seeing my legs jutting out on either side at right angles to my upper body. Uncle Gus was a tall husky man and it was later said that from him I might have inherited my height, but since he was just a half brother to grandpa this seems unlikely.

Since Grandma had at least two brothers living in near by Blossberg, Pennsylvania area there must have been at least a small French-American community there abouts and this may have influenced their settling in the region. Grandma would speak a bit in French now and then in later years, but when we would occasionally visit relatives I never heard anything but English spoken.

Grandfather Ducotey died before my birth, but I did have numerous opportunities to become acquainted with my grandmother who was 73 years of age when I was born. She was a spry and peppery old lady, not unlike many of the older French women I saw overseas during my later military service on the continent. My father, William J. Ducotey , was born into their family on March 7, 1876, the youngest of six living children. There had been at least two others who died very young. My father's oldest brother Ebon was a bachelor who died an alcholic before I was born. The other brother was Charles and his sisters were Jane, Ann, and Julia. Charles resided in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, married and raised a family of several children, including a son named Carl and it is this portion of the family who use the spelling "DuCotey"

Carl's wife was Isabell Blum and they made their home in Buffalo, New York suburb of West Seneca. Luckily for me , through my involvement in the hobby of Amateur radio, I have renewed contact with this portion of family through conversations with Carl III, an amateur radio operator.

Father's sister Jane (always referred to as Jennie) had married a Mr Bower and resided as a widow in Trout Run, Pennsylvania. Ann had also been previously married and widowed when I first met her. Somewhat later she married again, this time to William Palmatier, a fine gentleman for whim I had great respect. Sister Julia's husband had been James Marshall who began a large and successful dairy farm near Roaring Branch, Pennsylvania. In my early recollections of aunt Julia she was already a widow and the farm was operated by her sons Melvin and Fred, Particulary the latter who taught school in addition to supervising the farm. Fred and his wife Martha raised a fine family and his sons succedded him in the ownership and operation of the farm. Melvin and Fred had at least one other brother , Anson, who operated an automobile dealership in New York state, and a sister whose name, I think was Almeera.

One summer we visited the Marshalls at the farm during haying season. The weather was hot and dry, ideal for the job at hand. The entire family had pitched in and everyone was involved in some way. Even my father and younger cousins were participating. Not to be outdone I volunteered, was handed a pitchfork and sent into the haymow to help even out the hay as it was brought into the barn loose on the wagons pulled by teams of horses. Without much ventilation up under the barn roof, the air was stifling and the dust hung in heavy , gritty clouds. As a "City boy" I was ill prepared for this kind of nature in the raw. In spite of retiring early from the work crew I developed an infection in both eyes which for weeks afterwards required regular drops of argyrol. This brownish and staining solution turned the whites of my eyes yellow and fringed each eyelid in a dark ring making me look like a youthful Cleopatra. Luckily I and my young friends were ignorant of this notorious Egyptian and I was saved many a knuckle bruising defense of my masculinity. Gradually the medication conquered the infection and left me a much wiser farm Hand.

On the Ducotey farm there had been only minimal interest in and opportunity for education. Thus my fathers formal training never progressed beyond the primary grades. He was by no means illiterate, however, and it is a pity the family had not encouraged and helped him secure additional schooling. The farm offered only limited opportunities, however, and as a young man he moved out into the world to make his own way. At this time the Applalachian Mountains were being lumbered and he was hired by R.E.Wood Company as a lumberjack and put to work by them in West Virginia. Other jobs followed including a stint in a glass factory located at Anderson, Indiana. Returning to Williamsport, Pennsylvania he became a Conductor/motorman on the local trolley system and at one time also worked as a private chaffeur for a waelthy resident. In addition, he owned and operated a Williamsport store importing and selling fancy chinaware as well as specializing in picture framing.

During this period father met and married Alice Seitzer, daughter of Edward G. Seitzer who was always and affectionately known as "dad". He remained a respected member of our family until his death, Earlier Alice had died in Childbirth and her baby also perished.

My fathers second wife, my mother , was Kathrine Ellen Fisher, who was also from Williamsport although her birth place was Millheim, Pennsylvania in centre county. I do not remember ever seeing my maternal grandmother, but I do have a recollection of once visiting my maternal grandfather, John S. Fisher, in Buffalo, New York where he lived with his second wife. He had been born June 17, 1850, was orginally married February 10, 1867 and died February 5, 1923. An old man then, he had been a carriage maker in his prime and his skills were inherited by two of mothers brothers, Harry who was a cabinet maker and Wallace who became a blacksmith. The other children in mothers family were Bertie, Anne, George, Alice and Jennie with whom mother lived with while she was working in Williamsport for what later became U.S. Rubber Company. Sister Alice died as a young girl. All of these relatives lived in Pennsylvania. But since Ohio was our home we saw them rarely and my memories of most of this portion of the family are indistinct. However returning with mother from Buffalo to Cleveland, Ohio by steamer on Lake Erie was a memorable experience for me as a young Lad. This overnight trip gave me my initial introduction to massive steam engines. What a wonderful adventure! I recall it fondly.

My maternal grandmother was named Mary Jane Rishel and her family, I believe , was engaged in furniture manufacturing. She was born February 2, 1847. February seems to have been an important month in my mothers family, mother herself having been born on February 17, 1883. Grandmothers parents were Daniel Rishel who died in 1894 and Sarah A. (maiden name unknown) who was born December 12, 1837 and passed away on March 8, 1927. This was Sarah's second marriage, her first having been a young man , Jacob J. Lanich by name, who was killed in the battle of Gettysburg during the civil war.

This will round out the vital information on both my parents. Mother married my father at Mansfield, Ohio on April 12, 1911 and her death occured September 28, 1964 in Massillon, Ohio. Father was born March 7, 1876 and died November 10, 1957 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Both he and mother are buried in Wildwood Cemetery at Williamsport.

She married WILLIAM EDWIN KNICKERBOCKER September 04, 1904. He was born June 10, 1870 in Potter County, Pa., and died September 15, 1958 in California.

Notes for WILLIAM EDWIN KNICKERBOCKER:

Bill Knickerbocker

Legendary Mountain Man

In any conversation regarding the pioneers of Big Bear Valley, certainly one of the first names to be mentioned is that of Bill Knickerbocker. A legend in his own time, Bill had a reputation for integrity that was only equaled by tales of his amazing strength, his amazing ability as a woodsman, and his accuracy with a rifle.

William Edwin Knickerbocker was born on June 10, 1870 in Pennsylvania. His mother was full blooded Seneca Indian and his father Dutch. As a boy, he worked in the sawmills as well as helping get the logs out of the forest. There were six Knickerbocker children, but his mother had previously had fourteen other boys and girls. When this brave women knew she was dying, she walked away into the woods and completely disappeared forever.

In time, Bill Knickerbocker, headed west with his brother Ed, a mining engineer. They worked in Arizonia for a while, but did not do well. They heard about Holcomb Valley and arrived there Christmas day 1901. They staked and worked several claims and lived in Doble for a while.

In 1904 , Bill married Rose Anna Pollard and in time they had six children. The girls were Ellen, Gertrude, Marjory,Katherine, and Florence, and the boy was named Harold.

Bill mined in Holcomb Valley, did a lot of hauling for the Rose mine, as well as delivering, logs to a banning sawmill. In January of 1909, Bill was employed by the Bear Valley Mutual Water Company as the damkeeper, a job he would hold until April of 1918. Bill and his family moved into the historic rock house high on the mountain south of the dam. During the winters Rose took the girls to Redlands so they could attend school.

In those days, the nearest road ended mile away, so most travel between the village and the dam was by boat, which carried both supplies and passengers.

In 1908 Bill purchased 85 acres of land east of Pine Knot Bolevard, which became the later site of the " Knickerbocker Mansion". Today this special home has been converted into a unique bed and breakfast Inn, and is one of the valley's most interesting landmarks. Bill named the street bordering his property on the North Pennsylvania, after the state he was born in.

In 1913 Knickerbocker was involved in the founding of the Knot Pine Resort Company, but the legends that have endured are about his unusual strength rather than his business arrangements.

One persistent story describes the time Bill decided a new bathtub was needed in the damkeeper's house to take care of his growing family . When the iron tub arrived at the Pine Knot Stage Depot, it proved to be to heavy and awkward for his boat to carry to the dam. The alternative was for Bill to pack it on his surefooted burro who carried it to the foot of the steep hill below the house. Here the burro balked and refused to go any further. Bill promptly proceeded to load the heavy iron on his back and trudged on up long grade to his house!

Another story was told with glee by Mabel Morrison, whose family had a log cabin between Pine Knot Village boat landings. One day Bill came to town in his outboard boat for supplies. On his way back to the landing, Bill had sack of cement on his left shoulder with his one-year-old son riding on top, while he was also carring a full five-gallon can of gasoline with his right hand.

Mabel, an old friend of the family, greeted Bill warmly and inquired about Rose and the other children. Bill stopped entered into a lengthy conversation about the welfare of his family, the difficulty of the winter's storms, and other I news-all without unloading a thing! " You would have thought he was carring feathers," Mabel always said as she frequently repeated the tale.

Like most valley residents, Bill Knick bought his meat at Walter Warren's IS Ranch Store. This day he selected a quarter of a beef weighing at least 100 pounds, threw it on his shoulder, and started the long mile hike to the dam. About midway, a little west of Boulder Bay, he met a group of friends on the trail. They visited for 20 or 30 minutes will Bill nonchalantly supporting that beef on his shoulder. When they departed, Bill continued on to the dam house, never taking the weight from his shoulder until he hung the beef in the springhouse!

In late August of 1918, during a violent thunderstorm, lightning struck and set fire to "Sam Pine Tree", a giant eight foot thick standing between Pine Lnot Post Office some other structures. With no fire equiptment available, it was nessicary to fell the tree to put the fire out with buckets of water before it could spread.

Bill Knickerbocker , the surperb woodsman, was called upon to handle this job. He started a crew sawing on the trunk of the big pine, while he began chopping on the opposite side with a broad axe. It so happened that a motion picture company was on location in Big Bear at the time filming Jack Holt in "Call of the East" The cameraman took time out to set up, and to film the felling of the great tree. Finally Bill Knickerbocker laid it between two buildings exactly as planned, with just a few twigs brushing the Post Office as it fell! It's possible that the film taken that day still exits in a studio repository somewhere!

Tragedy came to the Knickerbocker family in January of 1921, when little Lucy became violently ill with an appendicitis attack. A full blizzard had been raging for sometime with four and a half feet of snow blocking all roads for two days friends and neighbors fought through the deep drifts dragging sleds carrying Lucy and other ill children down the desert route. Sadly , time ran out for the Knickerbockers child and she died before surgery could be performed.

In 1920 Bill began building the mountain home of his dreams for his wife and five children. With 4000 square feet, the two and a half story had 13 rooms, and was uniquely built with the siding logs placed vertically! Bill worked for years on this mansion, but never did competely finish it.

Again in 1932 heartbreak came to the mountain family. Their daughter Gertrude, was pregnant and went into labor during a immense winter storm. The thermometer plunged to four above zero, and snow fell hard and steadily for five days and nights.

The state highway wedge snowplows at Fawnskin were inadequate to combat the huge drifts. E.L. Stanfield obtained an Alaskan dog team to take Gertrude down the back way to a waiting ambulance. However, the trip was too long, hard, and cold for both mother and baby, and both passed away during childbirth. In time the years slipped away and the big log house became less important to Bill and Rose as their children grew up and left home. Always difficult to heat, Bill closed it up and the couple moved into a smaller cabin nearby.

In September of 1958, Bill Knickerbocker passed away, followed by his wife Rose, in January of 1960.

Although this true mountain man has been gone for many decades, the legend and memory of William E. Knickerbocker will live on forever in this Pine-rimmed valley he loved so much.

Bill Knickerbocker stands proudly beside the last big tree he would ever cut. In the early 1950's, he felled this huge pine using an axe when over 80 years old. The stump of this tree can be seen at the museum in Big Bear City Park.
