I am told he kept a daily diary from the age of 16 until his death. This is the only one to which I have access. My mother tells me he would sit in a straight backed chair next to his Great Grandmother’s dresser and write in his diary.
‘D.B.’ was an engineer with the Lehigh Valley Railroad in Sayre, Pennsylvania. Many of these entries tell of his duties.
"C.H." refers to Clifton Springs, NY.
"Ray and Grace" are Dwight Ray Saxton and wife Elizabeth Grace Taylor Saxton
"F.M." = Francis Marion Hulslander, D.B.’s son

| 12 | Last nite & today at home all day with the two Susies. E. F. T. was here at about 4p.m. He came up to repair his house. Dick & Ralph was in Rochester today. |

| 14 | Last nite at home & today in Sayre yard in Billy Waugh’s place on engine 3180. Paul Carpenter & L. C. Carr came to our place with Mary & E. J. C. Ed came to the hospital & he is to our house tonite & all others went back home - Ed will go back to the hospital tomorrow. |

| 16 | Last nite at home & today we washed. Mary & her son Val came to Sayre & E.J.C. was operated on at the hospital & is getting along good as can be expected. Val went home & Mary staid here & we became Great Grandparents today. |

| 21 | Last nite at home & this a.m.> I went to McKinna’s house & paid him $11.30 for B of L.E. insurance & Helen Mae came over & I helped her wash. Fred Beach & wife Gerty called to see us a few minutes & I am called for 3:30p.m. & went to C.H. lite via Ithaca & off duty at 10:45p. |

| 25 | Last nite & today at home & visiting with Milford & family. He & I was up to Waverly & each got a haircut. They went to Ulster tonite to visit Leah’s folks. I was called for 7p. & got to C.H. at 11p. & to bed in bunkhouse at midnite. |
| 26 | Called at C.H. for 10a.m. & got a fast frt & to Sayre & off duty at 2p.m. Phillis came to see her father & her Mother went home with her. Milford & family went home tonite. |

| 30 | Last nite at home from midnite till noon - We all was over & had dinner with Helen Mae & this P.M. Mother & I motored to Elmira & got Mitt & had our Thanksgiving dinner for our supper & Bernice & Lawrence was with us. E.J.C. went home today from hospital. |
| December 1 | Last nite & today at home visiting with Mitt, we was to town & over to see Mother Emma. Mitt went home these eve, Lawrence - Bernice, Dick & Mother went to Elmira with her in Lawrence’s car. |
| 2 | In yard from 10:01a till 8a. & home & in bed from 10a till 2:45p. & in yard from 4p till 12p. I got my left foot hurt on engine by a long rake falling on it. |
| 3 | Fireman Randolph took me to hospital in his car & I had my foot x-rayed & no bones was broke & he brot me home & I was in bed from 2a till 8a. & home all day nursing my foot. |
| 4 | Called for 3:30a. & doubled to C.H. & back to Sayre & off duty at 3p.m. & home at 4p. Boyd & Frances called on us this P.M. My foot is quite sore. |
| 5 | Last nite at home & today Helen Mae & baby - Mother & I motored to Binghamton & saw our first Great Grand baby then to F.M.’s & to M.J.’s & back home at 9:15p.m. & we had a good trip. |
| 6 | Last nite & today at home & we were to town & Mother got herself a dress & Dick a pair of shoes & rubbers out of the $13.00 dollar check that came today. |

| 14 | Last nite at home & today we went to Endicott to see Leah at the hospital - She had to have a transfusion of blood from Milford - we were up to F.M.’s & Nida came home with us. I am afraid Leah will not get well. |
| 15 | Last nite at home & I was called for 5:30a.m. & doubled to C.H. & back to Sayre & off duty 3:30p. Leah died today at 11:15 a.m. in the Ideal Hospital at Endicott. |
| 16 | Last nite at home & today Milford, Rosena, Blanch, Mack & I went to Corning & picked out Leah’s casket at Paul’s (cost $250) Leah was brot home at 2:30p.m. in casket from Paul’s at Corning. |
| 17 | Last nite at home & today was Leah’s funeral - Prayer at the house & services at the church & there was a very large crows. We put her in the cemetery vault for the nite. |
| 18 | Last nite at home & today we placed dear Leah in her last resting place in our lot in Tioga Point Cemetery - Ray & Grace - Francis & family went home. Milford & Rae & I went up to Endicott & got their belongings & brot them back home. |

| 20 | Last nite at home & today Milford & I took Nida & kid home to Beaver Dams. I hired fifty dollars of Mr. Fred Severn for 3 months. |

| 27 | Last nite at home & today Ray & I went to Binghamton & Endicott & saw all the folks & Milford had dinner with Ray & I in a restaurant. We got back home at 5p.m. |
| 28 | Last nite at home & today I went with Ray on a peddling trip in his car to Troy-Canton & other small town & back by Elmira & home at 5:30o.m. |
| 29 | Last nite at home & this morning I was called for 7:30 & doubled to C.H. & back & off duty at 6p.m. I got my L.V. paycheck for first half of Dec. $74.60. |
| 30 | Last nite at home & today in yard from 8a. Till 4p. The folks from Ulster came & got Rae. |
| 31 | Last nite at home till midnite, then in yard from 12 to 8a.m. & home rest of day - This eve Francis & family came to our house for New Years. Ray & Grace are here & Milford came home late tonite - I went to bed at 9:30p.m. |
