July
Saturday, 1
Temp. Sunrise 58, noon 88, sunset 76. ____
Morning partially cloudy and quite calm, but soon became quite cloudy, and continued so most of the time through the entire day. The wind has been southerly and moderate. Evening mostly cloudy.
Immediately after breakfast carried my letter up to the post office, and made a call at Mr. Bruce’s and at Roby’s shop, and then came home and went to work in the garden. Mr. Close from Leroy called and paid a note for $71.50, which Luman let me have. Afternoon spent some time hoing in the garden, & then came in and commenced a letter to Amy, informing that I would start on my journey to her on Wednesday.

Morning only partially fair, with a moderate breeze of wind from the s.w. The day has continued partially fair, & the wind has been quite brisk in the middle of the day. Evening is partially cloudy.
Completed my letter to Amy in the morning and copied it, and then spent my time reading, and getting ready for meeting. Went up to the Centre, calling a while at Bruce’s, then went into the Sunday School and remained at the meeting which was conducted by Br. Levi Taylor. After meeting called and took dinner with Br. Levi, after which rode with him & family to a protracted meeting in the woods near Noah Clark’s, by methodists.
Monday, 3

Morning considerably cloudy, with a gentle breeze from the s.w. A little rain in the course of the forenoon. Middle of day mostly fair & windy. Afternoon more fair and evening remarkably so, & calm.
Spent the morning at putting my rooms in order & making preparations for my journey, and in finishing my hoing in the garden for the present. Finished a letter to Amy and the copy and after dinner carried it up to the post office & got a letter from Laura Case. Went up to Sally’s, came back to Valentine’s, & after supper came home.
Tuesday, 4
Temp. Sunrise 64, noon sunset
Morning quite fair and calm and pleasant. Forenoon fair but there were clouds in the afternoon and a considerable shower towards night. Evening somewhat cloudy.
Got ready in the morning and immediately after breakfast started for Troy, it being a preliminary stage of my contemplated western journey. Walked up to Valentine’s & rode with him to the village where I have spent the day in partial attendence at the celebration of our independence, coming here to Amanda’s for dinner, and returning to stay at night.
Wednesday, 5

Morning considerably cloudy but the day has been partially fair with southerly wind. Towards night there was a violent thundershower with heavy wind. Evening mostly fair.
Remained with Amanda to breakfast and then went down to the village where I spent some time and made a few more purchases, then came back and got Lucella to assist me in completing my arrangements for the journey to be resumed tomorrow morning. Went to village again at night, returning here to stay with Amanda.

Morning mostly fair with mild southwesterly wind. The day has been \cde fair and calm, and also considerably warm. Evening very fair.
Took breakfast with Amanda and in due time afterward departed for the depot and in the middle of the day found myself in Elmira. Bot a ticket of Beer’s for Tolono, Ill., paying $14.45., & lost $21.00 by carelessness. Left at 5 o’clock coming to Rochester at night and leaving in the evening for Buffalo and the Lake Shore to Toledo.
Friday, 7

Morning tolerably fair and the day also mostly fair with the wind southerly and quite brisk in the afternoon. Weather very hot. Evening quite fair & very warm.
Found myself in the morning on the Lake Shore R.R. proceeding westward, and arrived at Toledo in due time. Took a train there for Tolono, on the Wabash R.R. arriving there in the evening, and leaving the train in order to proceed on the Illinois Central, waited until after midnight for a train to take me down to Arcola.
Saturday, 8

Morning quite fair and calm. The day continued fair but there has been a gentle southwestern breeze this afternoon, and weather quite warm. Evening fair.
Left Tolono between 12 & 1 o’clock in the morning, on a train for Arcola, and reached my destination at a little after 3. Found L. P. Brigham at the depot waiting for me, who conducted me to the house of Mr. Robinson where I found Amy waiting to receive me. Went to bed & slept a little & then rising, have spent the day here very pleasantly.

Morning fair and calm, at first, but soon after a brisk breeze arose from the s.w. which moderated the heat & the afternoon has been a little cloudy & towards night quite rainy. Eve. more fair.
After breakfast made preparation for meeting and at the proper time went out with Put and attended worship with the Disciples of the Arcola church. At the conclusion was introduced to Br. Perkins the pastor, & engaged him to perform the marriage ceremony between me & Mrs. Brigham tomorrow eve. Returned to Mr. Robinson’s & spent remainder of day.
Monday, 10

Morning at first quite fair but soon became quite cloudy with a moderate southerly wind and some rain. Afternoon quite showery. Evening partially fair.
After breakfast took a walk about the town with my name sake Put., and learned by him that it is an incorporated city. Returned & engaged in making preparations to commence our homeward journey tomorrow. In the evening, was married by Br. Perkins, to Mrs. Amy Brigham, according to our arrangement, before a small company at Helen’s.
Tuesday, 11

Morning partially cloudy, and the middle of the day was quite showery, but it became fair & settled before 4 o’clock. Weather very warm. Evening mostly fair.
spent the morning and the forenoon in packing up and making preparation for our journey eastward. Took a train north for Tolono at about 4 p.m. Arriving there we waited until about midnight for the regular train on the Wabash road, having purchased there through tickets to Philadelphia for $14.25, apiece, by way of Elmira.

Morning partially fair with a moderate southerly wind and weather quite warm. Day has been mostly fair, with clouds towards night. Evening cloudy.
Took the train at Tolono at about midnight, arrived at Toledo a little after nine, changed cars for Buffalo by way of the Canada Southern road, crossing the Detroit fiver at Grosse Isle where we changed again, crossing the Niagra river in Black Rock, & in the eve changed again at Buffalo for Elmira, and are on our way.
Thursday, 13

Morning fair and calm, the wind appearing to be southerly, and the weather very warm. Some clouds in the afternoon & a shower towards night. Evening fair.
Having arrived at Elmira after daylight in the morning, we went into a hotel and took a wash and then our breakfast, and then at 9 o’clock we took a train for Canton, arriving at Mr. Stockwell’s before noon?, where we are now remaining for the night. Laythan and Urania have been here this evening to see us.
Friday, 14

Morning mostly fair, with the wind west or southwesterly. Day fair & very warm, with a thunder shower in the course of the afternoon. Evening quite fair.
Remained at Mr. Stockwell’s until some time after breakfast, and then we rode with Laythan down to his house, he having gone up there with his team for that purpose. Have spent the remainder of the day very agreeably with Urania & the family, Laythan being in his meadow at work at haying. We remain over.
Saturday, 15

Morning quite foggy, but otherwise fair. and also calm. Day continued fair until towards night, & was then a little cloudy. Weather quite warm & evening fair.
We are remaining with Laythan’s family again today, Amy being busy at sewing, and I am spending my time looking about the premises and much of it reading. Amy having told Anna that we would return there tonight, Laythan brought us back here after tea, and we are tarrying for the night.

Morning opened quite fair and calm the wind appearing to be southerly. Forenoon fair, & afternoon a little cloudy but no rain. Evening calm and fair.
After breakfast got ready for meeting and at the proper hour Charles attended, with me the meeting of the Disciples and heard a discourse by Br. Blair. Afternoon attended a meeting by the Christian Association in Charles’ yard which was held for prayer and praise. Do not attend the evening meeting but am spending it with Chas.
Monday, 17

Morning quite fair with the wind southerly. Day has continued fair and very warm, the wind becoming quite brisk in the afternoon. Evening fair.
Took breakfast at Charles’ and at half past ten, leaving Amy there, took the morning train for West Granville, & meeting Isaac there rode down home with him, making calls only at Mr. Bruce’s on the way. Came home & found Lucella here, & also Burton & Mary. He being at work for Harvey remained, & I went up to his house & am staying with Mary.
Tuesday, 18
Temp. Sunrise 80, noon 98, sunset 74.
Morning a little cloudy but soon came off fair & very hot, reaching 101° in afternoon & at 3 o’clock a heavy thundershower began lasting 2 hours & making a great flood. Eve. cloudy.
Took breakfast with Mary & her mother and then went over and made a call at Aaron’s, and then went down to Valentine’s. After making a short visit there came on home, calling at Lydia’s, & at Roby’s shop on the way. Arrived before noon, & remained in the house on account of the great heat. Afternoon turned Burton’s colt out of Har. corn.
Wednesday, 19

Morning cloudy at first but the forenoon became fair and warm. Afternoon continued fair and warm, coming up to 90°, & a gentle breeze from the west. Evening quite fair and calm.
Attended to my rooms and my person in the morning after rising, and after breakfast went into the garden and went to work at pulling the weeds from among the rutabaga turnips and thinning them out. Had several spells of working at them, and accomplished the job in the course of the day.
Thursday, 20

Morning a little cloudy at first, and calm, but soon afterward came off quite fair and very warm until towards night and then there was a thunder shower. Evening cloudy.
Spent the early morning about the house reading some and attending to my rooms. After breakfast went into the garden and worked a spell at weeding out and hoing the cucumbers, but could not work in the middle of the day on account of the heat. Tried it a little in the afternoon but spent much of the time reading.
Friday, 21

Morning partially cloudy and quite calm. Forenoon became fair with a gentle breeze from the n.w., and the afternoon has been of the same character. Evening fair.
After breakfast went to work in the garden and continued until noon. Afternoon went up to the post office and got a letter from Helen’s daughter Lola, and one from Br. Champney. Called at Mr. Bruce’s, and at Roby’s shop, and at Levi’s. Came home and picked & p??red a mess of beans for supper, & then picked more.
Saturday, 22

Morning was very foggy, but otherwise was quite fair and calm. Day remained fair, and wind n.w. Weather considerably cool and a little cloudy towards night. Eve. same.
Having written a letter to Lola Robinson last evening, copied it this morning and after breakfast carried it up to the post office and then walked on up to Sally’s, rode from there up to the Summit, walked thence to Wm. Bates’ where I took dinner and in the afternoon came on to Laythan’s here in Canton where I have found Amy.
Sunday, 23

Morning mostly fair with the wind quite mild and westerly. Day considerably fair and weather quite cool, especially towards night. Evening quite cool & mostly fair.
Spent the morning here with Laythan and his family until the hour for meeting and then rode with him to the village and attended meeting with the disciples Br. Hayden being the preacher. At the conclusion of the exercises rode back with Laythan and did not make any calls. Am spending the night here with wife.
Monday, 24

Morning partially cloudy & considerably cool. Forenoon became fair & with gentle wind from n.w. Afternoon more cloudy with a little rain towards night. Evening mostly cloudy.
Remained at Laythan’s until after breakfast and then departed for home leaving Amy there a little longer. Came on down the creek and got a chance to ride a piece with John VanDyke. Came to Valentine’s to dinner, and after it came home. Luman came here towards night and is tarrying over. Obtained from him $40.00.
Tuesday, 25
Temp. Sunrise 42, noon sunset
Morning quite fair and calm. Clouds came on soon after and the day has been only partially fair, quite cool, & rainy afternoon. Evening cloudy.
Went over to Benjamin’s in the course of the forenoon, with the intention of going up to the village tomorrow to buy some things that are needed for housekeeping, and also some groceries and provisions. Spent the remainder of the day with Benjamin and Lurenda & am staying with them over night.
Wednesday, 26

Morning mostly fair with a gentle westerly wind and weather cool. Day continued tolerably fair and without rain. Evening fair.
Took breakfast with Benjamin and Lurenda and then departing came up to Azor’s, staying there to dinner, then came over here to Amanda’s & thence to the village where I made most of my purchases & obtained a Money order at the post office for L. P. Brigham, after which came back here to Amanda’s & am staying over.
Thursday, 27

Morning fair and calm. The day continued mostly fair but in the afternoon there has been a gentle southern wind. Evening is quite fair.
Remained with Amanda to breakfast and until Benjamin came along, and then rode with him to the village where I made some more purchases and putting all my goods into his waggon rode with him down to his house, whence I came on home, calling at Lydia’s and at the store on the way; ??? Benjamin having agreed to bring my things to my house another day.
Friday, 28

Morning partially cloudy and with a brisk s.w. wind. Afternoon very cloudy and a little before night there was a moderate shower. Evening mostly cloudy.
Took my breakfast at home and spent the forenoon in doing whatever I could in the way of preparation for housekeeping next week, hoing in the garden a part of the time. After dinner left home for Canton, to visit Amy and make arrangements for bringing her home on Monday next. Found her here at Laythan’s where I am now tarrying.
Saturday, 29

Morning considerably cloudy, continuing most of the time during the day. Some rain in the afternoon, the wind appearing to be easterly. evening cloudy.
Remained and breakfasted with Laythan then rode with him up to the village, stopping at Mr. Stockwell’s where I wrote a letter to L. P. Brigham at Arcola, Ill., inclosing to him a post office Money Order for $15., which I sent to post office by Laythan. Rode back with him and have spent the remainder of the day with Amy & Laythan’s family.
Sunday, 30

Morning mostly cloudy, the weather continuing so most of the time through the day with easterly wind. Rained a little towards night. Eve. cloudy.
Remained at Laythan’s to breakfast and rode with him & Urania to the meeting at the village. Br. Hayden preached. After meeting I called at Charles’ and remained until some time after tea, and then walked back to Laythan’s here where Amy has remained with the children. She will go home tomorrow with me.

Morning cloudy, threatning rain. The afternoon has been partially fair. The wind has been gentle, appearing to be easterly. Evening partly fair.
In the morning after breakfast, Laythan started with his team and brot wife and me down to our home in Granville, arriving some time before noon. WE found Benjamin & Lurenda waiting for us here & soon afterward Azor came with Amanda & Eliza, affording us a glad surprise. They all staid till after tea, & then went home.

Tuesday, 1

Morning fair with heavy fog along the valley. Day fair with a moderate northwesterly wind. Some clouds towards night. Evening calm and fair.
Went to work in the morning with Amy to prepare our breakfast, and after we had taken it, to arrange and regulate the matters and things about our home, and put them in order for the commencement of our housekeeping. Have had a busy, toilsome day, but have succeeded in making considerable progress. Luman came & staid.
Wednesday, 2

Morning a little cloudy at first, wind easterly and moderate. Forenoon became fair and wind brisk. Cloudy again towards night. Evening cloudy.
Went up to the Centre after breakfast, calling first at Roby’s shop, then went into the store to make some purchases, & then rode back with Luman who went on to Barclay. Spent the remainder of the day at home assisting wife to arrange our rooms and put the things in order. At night picked some string beans.
Thursday, 3
Temp. Sunrise 63, noon 84, sunset
Morning became quite cloudy soon after sunrise and remained so until the close of the day. The wind has been northerly & quiet. Evening cloudy.
After breakfast mowed some weeds back of the house and spent the forenoon arranging things around the house outside and in, and chopped some wood for the kitchen. Afternoon went up to the Centre & got some things at the store, & called on Lydia. Came home and cut some wood & prepared a mop handle.
Friday, 4

Morning was quite cloudy, continuing till middle of the day, with wind s.w. and quite mild. Afternoon mostly fair and the wind more brisk. Evening quite fair.
Helped wife about the house until after breakfast, then went over the creek and picked ten quirts of blackberries, returning some time before noon, and then went into the garden and gathered the cucumbers for pickles. Spent the afternoon about the house doing but little besides chopping some wood for the kitchen.

Morning quite cloudy with wind s.w. & very moderate. Day continued fair, the clouds having dissipated in the forenoon. Weather very warm in the afternoon. Evening fair and calm.
After breakfast went up in the lot and picked a few quarts of blackberries, besides attending to various other matters in the course of the forenoon. Afternoon got a hen and nine young chickens from the barn and put them in a coop near the house, after which went up to the post office and got the Troy papers and some apron stuff for wife, & then came home. Br. Shepard with me.
Sunday, 6

Morning quite foggy and fair and calm, wind southerly and weather continued fair until in the afternoon, and then there was a thunder shower. Evening cloudy.
After breakfast Br. Shepard departed to attend the Sunday school and after we had made preparation, wife and I went up to attend the meeting calling at Isaac’s on the way. Br. Shepard preached. After meeting made a short call at Lydia’s with Amy, after which we returned to Isaac’s to tea, and coming home towards night found Amanda & children here.
Monday, 7
Temp. Sunrise 63, noon 93, sunset 75.
Morning fair and calm, the wind appearing to be northwesterly, which, later in the day, revived to a gentle breeze. Afternoon has been a little showery, & the evening is a little cloudy.
Attended to the chores in the morning and after breakfast went into the shop & made a milking stool for wife. After this went into the garden and picked the cucumbers, and then cleaned out the pig pen, and chopped some wood for the cooking stove, and did various other things too numerous to mention.
Tuesday, 8

Morning mostly fair and quite calm, the wind westerly and at a later hour, in gentle motion. Afternoon quite fair and pleasant, and the evening also.
Spent some time in the morning after breakfast in chopping wood and making other preparations for wife to do her first washing since we commenced our housekeeping on the last day of July. Did what I could to assist her, and in the afternoon have been over the creek to pick some more blackberries.
Wednesday, 9

Morning very fair & calm with fog along the valley. Day continued fair all the way through and there has been no wind to speak of. The evening is quite fair and calm.
Spent some time in the morning after doing the chores, at picking up and chopping some wood for the cooking stove in the kitchen. Did not undertake to do much work today but spent some time reading in the forenoon, and with visitors in the afternoon. Abbey, & Mary, & Sarah Ann being here. Mowed some weeds & thistles.
Thursday, 10

Morning very fair except a little fog, and very calm also with wind appearing to be south or southerly. Day continued fair all the way through. Evening fair & warm.
Employed with chores in the morning as usual, and after breakfast worked some time at chopping wood for the kitchen stove and after that did some tinkering. In the afternoon read a spell and then went up to the Centre, calling at Roby’s shop, & at Mr. Bruce’s and at the store. Left at the post office four postal cards for Amy.
Friday, 11

Morning somewhat smoky and foggy but otherwise quite fair, and there was a moderate wind from the s.w. Afternoon quite fair & very warm. Evening fair.
After the morning chores and breakfast went up in the field and picked a few blackberries, and in a little while afterward went again. Attended to several matters about the house in the course of the day, and towards night went up to the Centre and made some purchases at the store, and found at the post office two letters for Amy.
Saturday, 12

Morning mostly fair with the wind remaining s.w., but quite still. Day continued fair till towards night and has been extremely warm. Evening considerably cloudy.
Went up to the Centre after breakfast & brought home some cans bought yesterday. Soon after this went over on Robert’s hill to pick some huckleberries and staid till 5 o’clock p.m. On my return to the house found two letters on my table one from Lola at Arcola, and one from Mr. Atkins. Did nothing more than chores.
Sunday, 13

Morning quite cloudy, with the wind remaining southwesterly but keeping very quiet. The forenoon became partially fair. Light shower in afternoon. Eve. Fair.
Found Luman & Willis here in the morning, who came some time in the night after bedtime. They took breakfast with us & went away. Attended meeting today, leaving wife at home. Br. Levi conducted the exercises and delivered a discourse. Came directly home after meeting, and spent some time reading.
Monday, 14

Morning quite foggy but otherwise fair. The wind was calm, appearing to be easterly. Forenoon fair, thunder clouds in the afternoon. Evening is a little cloudy.
After breakfast went to chopping wood for the kitchen and filled the wood box then, after doing what I could to help wife about her washing, took a pail and went over on to Robert’s hill again after berries and returned at about four in the afternoon. After this did nothing more than my evening chores.

Morning considerably cloudy, the wind appearing to be n.w. and quite calm. Forenoon came off fair. Afternoon more cloudy & light thunder shower. Evening mostly fair.
Attended to the chores in the morning but being then attacked with diarrhea did not undertake to do anything more through the course of the day except the chores at night. Spent much of the time reading, feeling better in the afternoon. In the evening Amanda returned with Mary and the children.

Morning fair with heavy fog along the vally. It was also quite calm, with wind appearing to be n.e. Forenoon fair and afternoon a little cloudy. Evening is quite cloudy.
After the chores in the morning and the breakfast took a small pail and went over the creek and filled it with blackberries in the course of the forenoon. Spent a considerable portion of the afternoon reading, and attended to various matters about the house. Mrs. Levi Taylor made a call this afternoon.
Thursday, 17

Morning quite cloudy, and calm, the wind appearing to be northerly. Cleared off in the middle of the day and afternoon mostly fair. Evening is quite fair.
Attended to the chores in the morning as usual, but not feeling very well did not undertake to do much besides. Did a little tinkering and attended to some other matters about the house, but spent much of the time reading. In the afternoon went up to the store & called on Lydia. Luman called.
Friday, 18

Morning fair and very calm, the wind appearing to be westerly. The forepart of the day was mostly fair, the latter part somewhat cloudy. Evening mostly fair.
Attended to my morning chores, and soon after breakfast went with Amanda over to Larcum’s hill and picked some blackberries and a few huckleberries, coming home a little before noon and finding Laythan & Urania with some of their children here, having come for a visit. They departed for home about five o’clock. We had a good visit with them.

Morning quite cloudy with brisk southerly wind, raining a little about six o’clock. Day continued cloudy & somewhat windy. Evening is cloudy & more calm.
Attended to the chores in the morning, & after breakfast went up in the field and picked a few blackberries. After this went over the creek and picked some more in order to make out enough to fill a small jar for pickling. In the afternoon went up to the store & bot a mop handle & made a call at Bruce’s where I found Mr. J. H. Ross. Attended to various other matters.
Sunday, 20

Morning mostly fair with the wind n.w. & quite still. Day has been fair all the way thro, with a little wind, and the weather some cooler than common. Evening fair.
Attended to the morning chores, and helped Amanda to get started for home with Harvey who went with his team; and in due time got ready and attended meeting with wife Br. Shepard being in attendence as the minister. Came immediately home after meeting, and in the afternoon Volney and Laura and Betsey made a call.

After attending to the chores and the morning meal, started off for Troy. Rode from the Centre to Philander’s with O’meara, walked from thence to Benjamin’s, rode with him to the village and back to his house, calling at Azor’s, and then walked back to the Centre, riding down from there with O’meara. Got a letter from post office for wife.

Spent the early morning doing my chores as usual, and after breakfast did some tinkering and employed my time at various little matters that needed attention. Have not done much this afternoon, not feeling very well, but have read some, and have helped Amy a little about her churning.

Spent the morning in the usual way and was very busy during the forenoon at preparing a closet in the chamber for Amy’s use, & at hunting for, & preparing some tools for my own. In the afternoon worked at setting some posts for a gate at the road in front of the house, & was busy at it until night.

After the chores in the morning went to work at my gate way and gate, and got the old gate ready to hang before noon. Chopped some wood & then rested until after dinner and then carried some butter up to the store and traded a little for Amy. Towards night hunted up some materials and hung my door yard gate.

Attended first to the morning chores, and after that did some tinkering, fixing up a pail for swill and slops. Spent the forenoon about the house, and after dinner I went over the creek and picked a few blackberries. After this rested till about sunset and then went over on the hill and brought the cows, & attended to the chores.

After attending to the morning matters went to work by the road in front of the house at digging up some elders, continuing until nearly noon. Afternoon went up to the Centre, calling at the post office and at Roby’s shop. Towards night went at it again and finished digging out that bunch of elders & attended to the chores.

There being in progress at Canton our yearly meeting, there was none held at the Center today, and not finding it convenient to attend there on this occasion, have remained at home with Amy, she being engaged, much of the time, with the pen, writing letters to her children in Illinois. Marion called in afternoon.

Morning smoky and a little foggy, but was otherwise fair. Wind n.w. and and very quite through the day. Day fair till towards night. Evening fair & very smoky.
Commenced immediately after breakfast to partition off a larger pen for the pigs, & after completing that made a trough for its accommodation. In the afternoon went up to the Centre, calling first at Roby’s shop to see about the bedstead, then went to see Lydia a few minutes, & then, after calling at the store, came home.

Was not well but attended to the morning chores and towards noon went up to the Centre & got a little work done at the blacksmith shop, and to Simpson to bring down from Roby’s shop a bedstead for me. Afternoon employed at putting up the bedstead and arranging various other matters in and about the house.

Went to work after breakfast at building a yard near the house for the cow in order to make it more convenient to feed and milk her. Spent the forenoon and a part of the afternoon at it and then rested remainder of the day, leaving the work to be completed at some other time.

After the morning chores and the breakfast went to work at the cow yard which I completed in the afternoon, and then, after regulating the conducter from the spring, made preparation for raising and leveling the hoghouse brought a quantity of stones for that purpose.

Attended to the chores in the morning and after breakfast commenced the underpinning to the hoghouse. Worked at it very busily all the forenoon and a part of the afternoon, having to carry the stones from a considerable distance. Spent the remainder of the day at my ease & at the chores.

After breakfast resumed my work at the hoghouse underpinning and I made it the principal business of the day. In the afternoon carried four & 3/16 lbs butter to the store and bought some sugar & some cheese, and made short calls at Lydia’s & at Roby’s shop, and then came home & read a little while.

Spent the morning at the chores and in making preparation for meeting. Went up with wife to attend the meeting but a little too early made a short call at Isaac’s. Br. Shepard preached. After the conclusion of the meeting we called to take dinner with Br. Shepard at Levi’s, I coming home to feed the pigs & returning.

After attending in the morning, first to the chores, and next to the breakfast, went to work again at bringing stones and underpinning the hoghouse, at which employment I spent the principal portion of the day. With Harvey’s help raised raised up the front of the building in order to make it level.

Spent a portion of the morning after breakfast helping Harvey lay out & set the stakes for his house on his lot. After this went to work at making a pen outside the hoghouse, but attached thereto, in order to give the pigs a chance to come to the ground whenever they choose. Got very tired before night and quit.

After attending to the affairs of the morning went to work at the hoghouse bringing stones and laying the underpinning of the southwest corner, and doing some other things to make the pigs comfortable. In the afternoon went up to the Centre, calling at the post office & Roby’s shop. Burton & Mary here in eve.

Went to work in the morning at making an entrance into the hoghouse left for the hens to go to their roost, and not being very careful fell from a scaffold into the mud and filth of the hogyard below, but escaped any other harm than being very badly smeared. After a change of garments, I completed the work.

We went firs to the village, & then attended a party at Azor’s, where we had an introduction to Luman’s wife. He was married on the 6th.

Returned with him & got the grist from the mill, and then waiting until after dinner, hitched up our team & came home with our load in season to set up our stove.

Spent the morning at the chores and in making preparation for my attendence at meeting. At the proper time went up to the meeting which was conducted by Brs. Taylor and Ross. Returned at the close and spent the remainder of the day at home with wife who remained at home on account of cold.

Wrote a letter to Mr. Atkins on the same sheet with one which Amy had written yesterday. Worked at fixing up and repairing some old barrels, in which to store apples and other things for winter use; and did something towards arranging them and other matters in the cellar.

In the morning, besides the chores, copied my letter to Mr. Atkins, and after breakfast carried it up to the post office, called at Mr. Bruce’s, did a little trading, and then came hamd and went over on the south hill and raked buckwheat with Harvey and Sylvester, forenoon and afternoon, finishing a little before night.

After attending to the morning matters went up to the centre and got some work at the blacksmith’s. & some hoop iron at Dave’s, then came home & hooped a small cask & put up some hooks in the ceiling over the kitchen stove to support the apple drier. Helped Harvey in the afternoon to haul his buckwheat, and in the evening pared a bu. apples & helped to put them up.

Husked ten baskets in the course of the day, bringing up one of them at night for my share, & for the purpose of feeding it to the pigs.

After dinner took Harvey’s horses and buggy and went with Amy up to Aaron Walborn’s to attend Mary’s birthday party, returning in season to attend to the evening chores.

Br. Shepard was in attendence and delivered a discourse. We came home at the close and did not attend in the evening.

Helped Harvey put up the stalks towards night. Luman and his wife called in the forenoon & gave us notice that they & some Canton friends come tomorrow.

After this came up and after resting a spell spent the remainder of the day at maters about the house.

Devoted the morning to the matters appertaining to it, and spent the entire day in and about the house, reading some but was busy, most of the time with matters and things in the house and in the out buildings that needed my attention and care. Fed the cow with hay for the first time.
