Day fair & extremely cold. Staid about home during the day with wife. Harvey went to Leroy to take Martha home. The Doctor & Amanda came over in the afternoon, & Valentine called. Eliza came home in the evening & returned.

Monday, 2

Day fair & weather continues very cold. Worked in the cellar keeping fire to keep out the frost. Luman went to the R.R. with load of Ties for Phillips & brought another from the woods. Abe got a load of straw from the barn. Harvey cut wood & attended to chores.

Tuesday, 3

Day fair & a little more moderate. Made & fitted in the door to the potato room in the cellar Luman hauled from home to the R.R. a load of Ties for Phillips in the forenoon & in the afternoon, with Harvey hauled up to the house some shingle butts. Erastus alled in the forenoon. Griffin at night.

Wednesday, 4

Cloudy & snowed some. Worked some in the cellar & went up to Taylor’s & traded a little. Bought 3 shoats of a hog peddlar, price $8. The boys hauled shingle timber & firewood. Luman went up to Bunyan’s towards night. In the evening Drake & Amanda came over & assisted in making sassauge. Griffin called.

Thursday, 5

Weather fair & continues very cold. Worked some in the cellar, posted accounts for Griffin, & at night went wife to Drake’s to help them make sassage. Luman went with team to haul logs for Phillips. He broke a sled there. S. K. Potter called in the forenoon. Ad. came & worked at shingles. Harvey did chores &c.

Friday, 6

Day fair & cold. Worked in the cellar as usual. Luman went to Troy & carried a grist to Long’s mill & brought it home. Harvey cut wood, attended to the chores, and worked a little in the cellar. In the evening Lura & Lutilda called & the girls came home.

Saturday, 7

Cloudy & quite rainy through the day. Clear in the evening & weather quite moderate. Did not work much today. Luman spent the day getting bobsled repaired. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon. Ad. worked again today at shingles. Rec. letter from Rhoda Bailey.

Sunday, 8

Day cloudy & thaw continued through the day. Clear again at night. Remained about the house through the day. The Doctor & Amanda came over. Valentine & several others cam in & at night George & Lathan called. Luman went away with Lurenda.

Monday, 9

Day partially cloudy & weather warm. Did but little work. Went ,\ie, with wife & Mr. Bunyan, who had called here, over to Drake’s. The boys worked at sawing shingle timber over the creek. Valentine & Mr. Andrews the teacher staid with us overnight.

Tuesday, 10

Day clear & cloudy, & the weather continues warm. Sleighing spoiled & the fields begin to be bare. Worked a little in the cellar, putting up ceiling in the potato room. The boys worked the principal part of the day at sawing shingle timber over the creek. The hauled a load of Tan from Tannery.

Wednesday, 11

Day cloudy & rainy, weather continuing warm till towards night when it was a little cooler. Worked in the cellar, finished the ceiling of potato room & filled the space with tan. The boys worked over the creek at hunting & scoring(?) shingle timber. George called in the afternoon.

Thursday, 12

Forenoon cloudy with a light fall of snow. Afternoon fair & weather mild. Continued to work in the cellar. Luman got the horses shod in the forenoon & hauled logs for Phillips at the steam mill, in the afternoon. Harvey worked some at excavating in the cellar.

Friday, 13

Day fair & the weather moderate. Worked in the cellar. Finished the potato room & commenced a partition between the old & new cellars. In the evening wrote letters to Mr. Grow at Washington, & the Post Master at Summit. The boys hauled shingle botts. Valentine called in afternoon & Ed. in evening.

Saturday, 14

Fore part of the day fair, latter part cloudy & a little snow fell. Worked a little in the cellar. The boys worked over the creek at shingle timber. Went in the morning to the P.O. with my letters & a book sent to Rhoda Bailey. In the afternoon Amanda came, & towards night the Doctor.

Sunday, 15

Forenoon fair & cloudy in the afternoon. The weather continues mild. Kept about the house during the day. Solon Saxton & Silas Bunyan were here to Tea. Samuel Rockwell & Laythan Andrews with their wives made a call in the afternoon.

Day partially cloudy & the weather continues quite moderate – Made & put in a door case between the north cellar & the passage. Luman went down to the steam mill & hauled in a few load for Phillips. Harvey worked some at excavating in the cellar.

Tuesday, 17

Froze some in the night & a slight fall of snow in the morning. Went with wife, the Doctor & Amanda & Mrs. Rockwell, to visit at John Bush’s The boys worked at threshing some rye that had been left in the bar & Ad. Bailey came again & worked at making shingles.

Wednesday, 18

Day partially cloudy & the weather considerably colder. Worked some at the partition in the cellar between the old & new ones. The boys finished threshing the rye & cleaned it up. Ad. came early in the morning & worked at the shingles till night.

Thursday, 19

Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair. Weather moderate for winter. Worked a little in the cellar in the forenoon, & in the afternoon went with wife down to Harry’s to attend Sybil’s wedding. Luman went to mill with some corn in the morning & attended the wedding in the afternoon.

Friday, 20

Day fair & pleasant. Weather mild. Went to the Huddle in the morning to attend the election & served as Inspector on the Board. Detained there till past midnight. The boys took half a ton of hay to Cornelius Sayles, & also spent some time at the election & at play.

Saturday, 21

The weather continues moderate & pleasant. Roads getting quite muddy. Went up to the Tannery & got some rod(?) leather, saw Bunyan there, &, returning called in at the Daguerriae Saloon. The boys sawed some shingle timber, hauled some wood, & brought grist from mill. Eliza returned.

Sunday, 22

Fair & pleasant, thawing through the day & freezing at night. Quite unwell with a cold. Staid about the house through the day. Family attended the meeting at the Huddle. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon & Ed. came in. Some other young people called in the course of the day.

Monday, 23

The weather fair, mild & pleasant. Continue unwell, but some better than yesterday. Did no work & remained about the house. Harvey took Eliza over to her school in the morning & after his ???? Luman went with a load of shingles to the R.R. & sold to Miller.

Tuesday, 24

Mild pleasant weather continues. Cloudy towards night with south wind. Went with wife to the Huddle & had our ambrotypes taken, & in the afternoon we went over to the Doctor’s for a visit. The boys worked in the forenoon at shingle timber & in the afternoon they put cap(?) fences about the house & barn(?).

The weather continues remarkably mild & pleasant for the time of year. Went up to the Huddle & obtained an ambrotype copy of Selenda’s picture in the forenoon. Do not feel able to do much work yet. The boys worked over the creek. Ad. made shingles at the house. Mr. Andrus called tonight.

Thursday, 26

Freezing night, fair morning, cloudy day & towards night snow commenced falling. Made an opening in the wall of the west cellar & put in a window. The boys worked sorked over the creek in the forenoon at shingle timber & in the afternoon they worked about the house. Mr. Bunyan called in the afternoon.

Friday, 27

Snow 5 or 6 inches deep, day partially cloudy & weather some colder. Worked some in the cellar at partition & door case. The boys hauled some wood in the forenoon. Harvey took two bushels buckwheat to the Ambrotype man & Luman went to Franklin after Lurenda but she did not come.

Principal portion of the day cloudy with cold southerly wind and some snow falling. Worked a little in the cellar & spent sometime with Hiram Stevens who called in the middle of the day. Luman hauled logs for Phillips at the Steam mill, & Harvey spent his time about the house & barn.

Day fair & pleasant & the being warmer the sleighing is nearly spoiled again. Remained about the house during the day, not going out farther than the pig pen. In the afternoon the Doctor and Amanda came over, & there were some youngsters in.

Day cloudy with some rain in the afternoon. Worked in the cellar, digging some & laying the foundation walls for partitions. Mr. Richardson called & got some corn to pay for the pigs. The boys worked at various matters. Mr. Griffin called in the evening.

Fore part of the day fair & towards night a Little snow fell. Weather colder. Continued my work in the cellar. The boys hauled up some shingle timber & then Luman went down to the Steam Mill & got a load of sample for our own use, & Harvey excavated some in the cellar.

Very cold night, day fair & continued cold. Prepared foundation & put down the floor for another cell for potatoes in the cellar. In the evening posted accounts for Griffin. Luman took half ton hay up to Mr. Martin & then went to the Steam Mill to haul logs for Phillips. Elon called in the forenoon & after him George came.

Thursday, 2

Day partially cloudy with a little snow flying, & continues cold. Worked in the cellar at the north cell. Luman got the BobSled repaired & then went with the waggon to the Steam Mill & hauled a load of Ties to the R.R. for Phillips. Harvey worked in the afternoon for Percival at sawing ice on the mill pond.

Friday, 3

Weather cold, cloudy, & with some flurries of snow. Worked at the north cell in the cellar. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. & brought down for him a load of flour, & brot up Lurenda at night. Eliza came home in company with Br. Gerould. Attended meeting in the evening at the Huddle.

Saturday, 4

Weather more mild, continues cloudy with flurries of snow. Went up to meeting(?) with Br. Gerould. Had ambrotype of self & wife for Amanda, Luman hauled logs for Phillips. Br. Wilson & other Brs. called. Spent the eve at home with the Dr. Br Gerould & Br. Williams(?) & his wife tarried with us.

Day cloudy, a little more snow & weather mild. Attended meeting with family in company with the Dr. and Amanda in the forenoon & in the evening he going with his team & sleigh. He & Amanda stopped with us a spell in the afternoon. After neeting Br. Gerould called & tarried again.

Monday, 6

Rained in the night & thawed through the day. Br. Gerould left in the morning for home. Harvey went with Eliza to her school. Boys did not do much & I did nothing. Br. Champnye & his wife came & made a visit. In the evening Elon made a call. Boys went to meeting.

Tuesday, 7

Day both clear & cloudy, & the weather growing some colder. Partially unwell to day, having no appetite to eat or disposition to work. Luman worked for Ad. & he worked here at shingles. Dave Sayles called in the forenoon, Harry in the afternoon & George towards night.

Wednesday, 8

Day fair, thawing some & freezing at night. Felt a little better than yesterday & went with wife over to Drake’s in the afternoon & staid in the evening. Drake called here in the forenoon. The boys worked some at shingle timber, & Harry Bailey worked here at making shingles.

Weather fair & warm, thawing considerable in the afternoon. Worked a very little at the north cell in the cellar. The boys worked some over the creek at shingle timber. Harvey worked here at making shingles. Edward called & spent the evening. High wind in the evening.

Cold windy night. Day fair but continued cold & windy. Did a little more work at the north cell. The boys worked over the creek searching for, & sawing shingle stuff out of some old timber in the woods. Jeff. called & spent some time in the forenoon.

Weather fair & moderate, but not sufficiently warm to thaw much. Remained at home, Luman & Mary attended meeting at the Huddle. In the afternoon the Doctor & Amanda came over & staid till night. Elon towards night & went away in the evening.

Day partially fair, evening rainy. Did but very little work. Continue quite unwell with a cold. The boys attended to several matters & in the afternoon Luman went up to the Depot with a load of shingles which he sold to Miller. Mr. Bunyan called towards night & on account of the rain he put up with us.

Day cloudy & some colder. Worked a little at the north cell in the cellar & towards night went over to Drake’s & staid a part of the evening, calling at Elon’s on my return. Harry Brigham called in the course of the forenoon & in the evening Samuel Shepard called & staid over.

Morning cloudy. Snow Storm commenced & continued through the day & evening. Did not feel able to work today. The boys hauled up a little shingle timber & gave some attention to various other matters. Harry Bailey came up & worked part of the day at making shingles.

Weather variable, clouds & sunshine, & a little more snow fell in the course of the day. Worked a little a cellar cupboard. Luman went in the afternoon & hauled up a load of Ties for Phillips. Mary(?) Brigham called at noon, & George came in, Valentine called towards night & Elon in the evening.

Weather clear and cold — Did a little more at the cupboard in the cellar. Luman went with the team to the steam mill & hauled logs for Phillips & broke a sled again. Harvey cut some wood at the school house & did chores at home.

Day cloudy with another snow storm. Had a pain in my head which proceeded(?) from a tooth. Went over to the Doctor & had the tooth extracted. Luman hauled logs at the steam mill for Phillips. In the evening Elose & Edward came in. Received a line from G. F. Redington.

Sunday, 19

Day cold & blustering. Did not go out but kept about the house during the day. Silas Bunyan came in with Luman. In the afternoon Daniel(?) Euapp(?) came with Mrs. Taylor who had been absent some time, & in the evening the doctor & Amanda came and made a short stay.

Day fair & more(?) moderate. Stephen and Fiche came & also Wm. Cross & Lura. We all went over to Dr. Drake’s. Champney & his wife & Luther & Sally also came there. At night Stephen & Fiche came home with us & staid. The Doctor & Amanda spent the evening with us. Luman hauled logs at the Steam mill for Phillips.

Day fair & weather continues warm. Finished the cupboard & cased a doorway in the cellar, & posted some accounts for Griffin. Went down to Abe’s in the evening & over to Drake’s towards night. Luman hauled some Ties for Phillips out of the woods, & brot home a load at night.

Weather mild & pleasant. Rained in the night & morning. Made a door to open between the east & west cellars, hung it & put on the latch. Luman went up to the R.R. with a load of Ties for Phillips & found the road very bad on account of the frost coming out of the ground. Mr. called after school.

Weather continues warm and pleasant. In the forenoon made a large box to smoke hams in. In the afternoon Mr. & Mrs. Bunyan with Mr. Wright & Anie came for a visit & the Dr. & Amanda came over. They all staid in the evening. The boys pur up some fence & Harry worked here part of day at shingles.

Day cloudy & rained some in the afternoon. Weather quite warm – Completed my apparatus for smoking meat & set it to work in the cellar. Made a drain to the well. The boys cut, & hauled some logs to the bank of the creek in Drake’s field for fence boards. Harry worked at shingles.

Windy night & high wind through the day. Weather fair & considerably cooler. Remained about the house through the day with wife & Harvey. Others of the family attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon & evening. Jefferson called in the afternoon.

Froze some last night, day fair warm & pleasant. Finished the partition of the north cell in the cellar & made a picture frame for Eliza. The boys cut some more saw logs & run some down the creek into the mill pond. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon.

Day fair & pleasant & the weather continues warm. Cased the doorway to the north cell in the cellar & made a part of the bins. Paddy Lowe worked here at digging drains. The boys worked over the creek at cutting & hauling sawlogs.

Heavy rain last night & high water in the streams. Day cloudy & weather mild. Finished the bins in the north cell & worked some at sorting & arranging potatoes. The boys worked over the creek at hauling sawlogs to the creek & floating them down into the millpond. Griffin called towards night & Sam in the afternoon.

Thursday, 8

Day fair till towards night, & warm. Sorted some potatoes, made a door for the south cell, wrote a letter to Br. Shepard, made clock shelf for Amanda, went over there & put it up, & hung her mirror. The boys sawed some logs for fence posts over the creek, Harvey split them & Luman hauled load Ties to R.R. for Phillips. Two paddies worked at drains.

Partially cloudy, colder with flurries of snow. Hung the to the north cell, gravelled the bottom of the west cellar & commenced a door to open into the cellar hall. The boys sawed some ???? timber for fence posts, in the forenoon, & in the afternoon Harvey worked at splitting them & Luman commenced breaking upon the flat. Low day.

Principal part of the day cloudy & quite cold with flurries of snow. Finished & hung the door opening from the west cellar into the passage & did some other tinkering. Luman went to the steam mill & brought up a load of Ties for Phillips. Harvey cut wood at the door.

Froze hard last night, day partially fair & the weather became some wormer. Staid at home with wife & Harvey; others of the family attended meeting. Drake & Amanda came over in the afternoon.

Day cloudy & afternoon cold and blustering. Went down to Mott’s shop in the morning & got a little work done. Worked some at repairing tools. Two paddies worked at digging. Luman went with Eliza to W. Burlington. Harvey split fence posts. Elon called in eve.

Morning cold, day fair & warmer in the afternoon. Went over the creek in the afternoon with Harvey & got out a few sleepers. Luman a load of hau up to C. U. Sayles in the forenoon & in the afternoon went to his uncle Sam’s & & traded his watch with him for a horse. IN the evening Perceval & his wife came in.

Freezing night, pleasant day but eve very warm. Went over the with Harvey & finished getting out the sleepers for the dining room & front hall & then took up the old floor there. Luman hauled the sleepers & several logs of dry pine up for firewood. Lowe & his man cam came on again to dig.

Day remarably fair, warm & pleasant. Finished puting in the sleepers & commenced laying the Dining Room floor. Luman took some buckwheat to mill for Lowe & worked at breaking up below the road. Harvey split some posts. Lowe & Shehan dug. Valentine & Mr. Jennings called.

Pleasant weather continues, freezing a little nights. Worked a short time at the floor & sent the principal part of the day with visitors. Luman went with team & plowed for Loren. Lurenda came home with Benjamin Smiley & Mrs. Buruban(?) having concluded her school. Sam. also called.

Pleasant & warm again today. Remained about the house with the family. Amanda came over in the forenoon. Br. Champney & his wife in the afternoon, the Doctor towards night, & at night Valentine & some youngsters came in.

Day warm & cloudy, & towards night a rain storm commenced. Went to Troy with Luman & the girls – Jack Drake being in company – took a grist to Long’s mill, called to see Br. Shepard, & bought some furniture of Mrs. Oliver for Eliza, a part of which we brought home. The paddies dug.

Weather a little cooler & fair with the exception of some squalls of snow. Worked at the Dining Room floor & went in the afternoon over to Drake’s sugar works. Luman finished the plowing on the south hill that was left last fall & hauled some posts & boards for fence. Mrs. Taylor moved away. George & Jack called. Lowe & Shehan worked at drains.

Weather continues cold & windy. Finished the Dining Room floor. The boys shelled some corn & took it to mill, took half a ton of hay to Jack Drake & got a str?? cutter of his, & at night Luman went up to Mr. Bunyan’s & got 2 bushels spring wheat & a turkey. Mr. Bunyan was here in the afternoon & several others called.

Weather not quite as cold a for several preceeding days, but is quite unpleasent. Put up partition studs around the Dining Room, & arranged a temporary floor over it. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. & went to Troy. Mr. B. Smiley called in the afternoon.

Day fair & pleasant with cool air. Put on the facings to the cupboards in the Dining Room. At night went up to Br. Rockwell’s. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. & helped Harvey saw some wood. Harry finished shaving the shingles. Lowe & Shehan worked at digging.

Day fair & pleasant. Springlike weather. Called in the morning with Br. Shepard at George’s. In the afternoon Lurenda was married to Benjamin S. Smiley of Franklin, & Eliza to Mr. Azor S. Rockwell of Troy, by Br. Shepard. At night Harvey went with him to the Depot. Large company present.

Dry pleasant weather continued. Went with wife to attend an entertainment given by Mr. Bingham Rockwell at West Burlington, calling, in the forenoon, at Mr. Stevens’. Azor & Eliza went over & remained. Luman & Miss Jennings also attended, Mr. S. & Lurenda remaining here.

Weather continues fair & grows warmer, with smoky air. Went with wife, in the forenoon over to Drake’s. Benjamin & Lurenda were there. After dinner they proceeded to Franklin & we returned home. Sold Elisha half a ton of hay & Jack a ton. Luman went to Steam Mill & brought up a load Ties.

Morning cloudy, rain commenced falling before noon, which soon changed to snow & continued till night. Staid about the house during the day & evening. Azor & Eliza came in the forenoon & remained overnight. Towards night Amanda came over & staid a short time.

Monday, 2

Principal part of the day fair but cold thawing but little. Finished putting in the partition studs around the Dining Room & did some bridging. Wrote a line & enclosed a letter to Mrs. Taylor. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Ties for Phillips & brot up another from the mill. John Bush was here in the forenoon.

A little more snow in the morning, day fair & warmer towards night. Commenced the door case between the Dining Room & Hall & in the afternoon attended at the Huddle to settle a matter in the Canton church. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. & another from the mill. In the evening Elon called & George & Charles Stockwell came in.

Wednesday, 4

Day partially cloudy & warm with rain in the evening. Spent the day with company. Luman went to the R.R. with load of Ties for Phillips, went to Martin’s & got some nails, & to the sawmill & got a load of fence boards. Smiley & Lurenda came in the morning & returned at night. Azor came at night & went over to Drake’s. Stockwell called, & so did Elon & Br. Rockwell.

Thursday, 5

Day fair till towards night, then cloudy & rained in the evening. Walked to Troy. Azor & Eliza went in his buggy. Luman went with team & took a load of Eliza’s goods & wife went along. Took dinner at Hiram’s. Went to village & got some crockery & more furniture for Eliza, saw them established in their new home, took supper with them, & wife & I came home with Luman.

Friday, 6

Day tolerably fair but rather cool – Settled with Lowe & Shehan, made out a report of the case from Canton church, attendee on tuesday & spent some time with several visitors. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips from mill to R.R. Br. Spalding of Alba called, Benjamin & Lurenda also came & made a short stay. Harvey worked some at making a new fence around the barn yards.

Saturday, 7

Day fair & moderately warm. Spent the day in circulating a remonstrance against the confirmation by the court of the report of viewers fro the erection of the new township of Alba. Took dinner with S. Stotenbier(?). The boys sowed & dragged in two bushels of spring wheat & hauled some fence boards.

Sunday, 8

Morning rainy & some thunder & hail in the afternoon. Spent the day about the house, not going out farther than the pigpen. George & Amy called in the afternoon & in the evening Elon came in. Several youngsters were here in the course of the evening.

Monday, 9

Rained through the night & principal part of the day, producing high water in the streams. Put in the short stuck(?) & commenced casing the windows in the Dining Room. The boys shelled some corn & Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips from the mill. In the afternoon Calvin called.

Tuesday, 10

Day cloudy, with a little rain & the weather cooler. Staked out the line for fence across the flat, & finished the windows in the Dining Room. Luman went up to the R.R. with the load of Ties for Phillips & brought up another load from the mill. Harvey worked at setting fence posts on the flat. Shehan called & so did George.

Wednesday, 11

Day cloudy & cool. Commenced putting on the base in the Dining Room. Luman went up to the R.R. with a load of Ties for Phillips in the forenoon & brought down a load of lime for him. In the afternoon he brought up a load of Ties for Stone. Harvey worked at setting fence posts. Elon called towards night.

Thursday, 12

Fore part of the day fair. A little rain at night. Evening clear. Worked some at the Dining Room base & spent sometime with Mr. Bunyan who called in the afternoon. Elon also came in. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Ties for Stone & hauled another load there from the woods, & hauled down some pork for Phillips. Harvey made fence.

Friday, 13

Snowed a little the latter part of the night. Day fair & not very warm. Finished the base of the Dining Room in the forenoon & commenced the walls in the afternoon. The boys did something at the fence on the flat & attended to some other matters. In the evening they, with Mary attended meeting a the Huddle.

Saturday, 14

Snow commenced falling early in the morning & fell till noon. Weather cold & flurries of snow towards night. Had Valentine’s buggy & went with wife to Harvey Holcomb’s. Took dinner there & then went myself to manley’s corners to attend a bridge view returned to Harvey’s, & after tea returned home with wife.

Day fair & cool, bu much more springlike. Remained about the house with wife, family attended meeting at the Huddle. In the afternoon Drake & Amanda were here, Azor & Eliza came, Mr. Martin called a short time, Valentine was in, & in the morning Elon made a call.

Rain commenced falling in the morning & continued till afternoon. Weather mite cool. Worked lathing the walls of the Dining Room. The boys got some wood & attended to various matters. In the evening they with Mary attended meeting at the Huddle. Benjamin & Lurenda came in the afternoon.

Day fair & considerably warmer than several preceeding days. Finished the door case between the Dining & Bed Rooms & did some other work. Luman hauled some fence boards, & also a load of Ties for Stone. Harvey worked at fence. Wife attended meeting in evening.

Day fair & pleasant but not quite as warm as yesterday. Finished lathing the walls of the Dining Room & worked some at the door case opening into the Hall. Luman worked at breaking upon the flat for corn. Harvey worked at the new fence across the flat.

Morning frosty. Day fair & quite pleasant. Finished the door case & commenced putting on the base in the Hall. Luman finished breaking up for corn on the flat, & hauled up som fence boards from Bailey’s mill. Harvey worked at the fence on the flat. Elon & Manville with a book agent called.

Rained some in the forenoon, weather warm & afternoon fair. Finished the base & lathed some in the Hall. In the evening posted accounts for Griffin. The boys plowed & dragged some oats on the flat this side the creek, & Luman hauled a load of Ties from the woods to the R.R. for Stone. Elon called in the forenoon.

Day fair & warm & quite springlike. Worked at trimming & furring studs in the Hall & commenced casing the windows. Spent some time in the afternoon reading the papers. The boys sowed five acres of oats on the hill south, & dragged them one way using two teams.

Rained moderately through the night, continued through the morning & commenced again at the close of the day. Remained about the house with wife during the day. Harvey & Mary, in the afternoon went down to see Lurenda. Ed. called in the afternoon, & Silas at night.

Day cloudy & cool. Went with wife in company with the Doctor & Amanda to Troy to visit Azor and Eliza & returned at night. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Stone from the woods to the R.R. & hauled home a load of fence boards from Bailey’s mill. Harvey repaired fences.

Principal part of the day cloud & rained some. Weather cool. Finished the floor in the front Hall & partially made the door case leading into the library. Luman took some hay up to C. N. Sayles & some casks to Sherman to be repaired, & commenced plowing west of the barn.

Weather cloudy & cold with frequent flurries of snow. Worked at lathing in the Hall. Luman finished plowing the ground west of the barn & hauled a load of Ties from the woods to the R.R. for Stone. Harvey, besides doing the chores, worked some at the fence on the flat. Daisy brought a calf.

Day fair & some warmer than yesterday. Worked at lathing the Hall. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Stone from the woods to the R.R., carried down three barrels of port for Phillips & brought home 500 lath from Barns’. Harvey finished the board fence across the flat. Aunt Polly came down to buy a cow.

Day fair & pleasant & weather growing warmer. Finished lathing the front Hall & laid the floor under the stairway. The boys working with two teams finished dagging the oats over the creek which were sown last saturday, & sowed and dragged the piece west of the barn. Ed. called at night.

Weather today very similar to that of yesterday. Put up partition between the Library & Stairway & worked some at the door cases in the Hall. Subscribed for Headley’s life of Washington. Sold cow & heifer to aunt Polly for $35. Luman plowed for Lowe. Harvey worked in the cellar at sorting the potatoes.

Day fair & pleasant & the weather warm. Went up to the Huddle & the Tannery in the morning & balande of the day worked at getting out mouldings for the door & window cases in the Hall. Luman went with team to work for Shiker(?) . Harvey worked at fence over the creek. Aunt Polly backed out.

Morning fair, latter part of the day cloudy & rained some towards night. Went wife to Franklin to visit Lurenda. Had horse & buggy. Luman worked with the team for Shiker? again to day – Havey did but little being unwell with a cold. Mr. Phillips called in the morning.

Rainy night, & rained in the morning. Latter part of the day fair. Finished putting on the mouldings to the door & window cases in the Hall. Luman hauled a load of bridge timber from the mill to the R.R. for Phillips. Harvey took Valentine’s horse & buggy home & did the chores. He continues unwell.

Thursday, 3

Day fair, warm and very pleasant. Made the frames & panels to be placed under the windows in the Hall; transplanted the pionies in the dooryard, & called at Brighams to see Stockwell. Luman dragged for Martin in the forenoon & Harvey in the afternoon.

Friday, 4

Morning cloudy & cool, balance of the day fair & warm. Finished the Hall except the doors & stairs. Luman with others started early this morning for an excursion to Astonville. Harvey took them up to the R.R., then got some shoeing done, & dragged for Martin in the afternoon. Levi Taylor called in the afternoon.

Another pleasant day, being fair & warm. Worked at the front stairway making preparation for the stairs. Harvey worked with the team for Mr. Martin at dragging in the forenoon, & in the afternoon he hauled a little wood. & at night went up to the R.R. after the excursionists.

Pleasant weather continues. Warmest day of the season. Went with wife over to Doctor Drake’s in the middle of the day. Remained there till towards night and returning we made a Short call at Eliza’s the Doctor & Amanda being in company with us.

Another very fine day. Forenoon fair & quite warm with thunder showers in the afternoon. Worked at putting up the partition studs around the front stairway, in the chamber. The boys hauled manure on to the garden, plowed it & commenced planting some potatoes.

Morning cloudy, Middle of the day fair, & thunder showers towards night. Weather very warm. Worked at lathing the stairway in the chamber. The boys repaired some fence over the creek, turned the cattle into the pasture, & commenced plowing the potato ground on the flat. Eliza came down & returned with Mary.

Cloudy lowry day with some rain & the weather cooler. Worked some at the front staircase – Luman went to Troy & go some clover seed, had some buckwheat ground at Long’s mill, called at Azor’s & brought Mary home. Harvey repaired fence. George called afternoon.

Day cloudy with frequent showers. Rain & decidedly unpleasant. Worked some at the stairs & spent some time with Bunyan & Levi who called. At night went over to Elon’s & down to the Corners. Luman & Ed. sowed the clover seed in the Hickory field & then Luman helped Ed wash their sheep.

Weather continues wet. Heavy showers in the forenoon. Went in company Elon & Levi Taylor to Towanda to assist in opposing the new township of Alba. We succeeded in our effort & returned at night. Mr. Bunyan rode home with us & tarried with me overnight.

Not so much rain today & the streams are not so high. Spent the morning with Bunyan & the balance of the day in doing nothing. Luman went to West Burlington to collect some money for Eliza & Harvey moved some fence above the orchard.

Partially fair, but we had a little more rain. The weather continues warm. Staid at home with wife alone today the rest of the family being away. Harvey & Mary went last night down to Smiley’s. He returned tonight having left Mary at her father’s.

Monday, 14

A little more like fair weather tonight but had considerable rain in the morning. Worked a little at the stairs today, bu had to attend to some other matters. The boys commenced cleaning out the drains above the orchard, & putting in the stones. Harry called.

Tuesday, 15

Day fair & smoky & tolerably warm. Fine growing time. Worked a little more at the stairs. The boys, having Lowe to help them, worked at cleaning out & stoning the underdrains. Luman sold a three year old hiefer to Add for $18.00 yesterday. Mr. Andres, our late teacher, staid with Luman last night.

Another fair, warm & pleasant day. Worked in the flower garden making beds & arranging the plants. The boys worked at stoning the underdrains. In the afternoon Luman finished plowing the potato ground on the flat & commenced ridging it. Drake called in the morning, & Sam in the afternoon.

Thursday, 17

Day fair till towards night, when it became cloudy & threatens rain. Worked at poesy garden & made a step to the front porch. Luman prepared the potato ground in the forenoon. In the afternoon the boys with Ed. nearly finished planting the potatoes.

Friday, 18

A little dash of rain in the night & a little more in the afternoon. Put a handle on a dungfork & commenced framing a truss partition in the chamber. The boys finished planting poatoes on the flat & commenced hauling manure there for corn. They had Jabe to help. Sister Mary called at night & staid with us.

Heavy thunder in the night & day partially cloudy & much cooler. Worked at truss partition in the forenoon & in the afternoon went with wife, Azor & Eliza, & Drake & Amanda to Franklin to visit at Smiley’s. The boys worked at getting our manure. Had Jabe to help in the forenoon. Valentine here at night & staid.

Day fair & the weather considerably cool. Spent the day at home. The Doctor & Amanda with Azor & Eliza who staid with them last night came over in the forenoon & staid till in the afternoon. Ed. was here & Lathan Andrus called towards night.

Rainy in the morning, thunder showers in the forenoon. After partially clear & the weather warmer. Worked at the partition in the chamber. The boys spread some manure, & attended to some other matters. Levi Taylor called in the afternoon.

Thunder showers in the night & in the course of the day. Towards night, fair. Finished the frame work of the partition in the chamber & commenced laying the floor in the back passage there. The boys finished spreading manure on the flat, worked some at filling drains, & shelled some corn & got it ground.

Weather tolerably fair & warmer & no rain today. Bridged the joists over the Dining room & framed & put in a part of the upper joists. Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips from the mill to the R.R. & helped Harvey some at hauling stones & filling underdrains.

Fore part of the day lowry with considerable rain. Latter part fair. We came home from Troy in the afternoon & went over to Drake’s & took tea calling at Julius’ on the way back. Luman, having John with Drake’s team again today, hauled ties for Jenkins. Harvey in the afternoon, dragged some with Pop & the colt.

Weather fair & pleasant, & a little cooler. Worked some at casing about the stairway. Went to P.O. & got the papers & read them. The boys finished preparing the corn ground in the forenoon & in the afternoon – having Gib. Baxter Hank Avery, & Parsons Bailey to help they planted it.

Day fair with clouds at night which indicate more rain. The weather continues warm. Spent the day at home with wife. Some of the family attended meeting at the Corners. Amanda with some of her children came over in the middle of the day.

Forenoon partially cloudy & a long thunder shower in the afternoon. Sowed the flax seed & helped Harvey clearing of the stones and smoothing the ground. Luman hauled Ties for Jenkins. After the shower Harvey hauled manure from hog pen onto the garden.

Rained considerable in the forenoon, & all the afternoon. Worked a little at casing about the Stairway. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Jenkins from the woods to the R.R. Harvey repaired fence along the lane & above the west lot, & turned the cows in there to pasture.

A little frost in some places this morning. Day fair & warmer than yesterday. Cased the north window in the chamber & worked a little in the poesy garden. Luman went with team to plow for Shehen. Harvey finished the board fence between the corn & the Cherry field.

Day fair & warm. Made & put on the mouldings to 3 doorcases in the chamber, & commenced to make a cupboard in the passage on which to build the stove chimney for the Parlor. Went down to the Corners in the morning. Luman worked on the road with the team, & Harvey sheared the sheep.

Forenoon fair, afternoon some clouds & thunder but no rain. Worked a little at the cupboard in the chamber. Luman worked with the team on the road again today. Harvey plowed & hoed some potatoes in the garden & took the young cattle to Drake’s pasture in Leroy.

Some clouds & a very little rain today. Worked at lathing in the forenoon & afternoon went with wife up to Luther’s for a visit. Ed. called in the morning & sold him some sheep & four lambs for $25.25 Luman commenced plowing for Buckwheat over the creek. Harvey worked garden.

Fore part of the day cloudy & cool, latter part fair & warmer. Worked at facing and casing the cupboard. Luman worked at plowing summer fallow. Harvey hoed corn & attended to some other matters. Br. Wells returned from Br. Churchill’s. Br. Rockwell called in the morning.

Day fair & tolerably warm. Made & put the mouldings on the bedroom cupboard in the forenoon, which completed it except the doors. Luman worked at plowing the summer fallow, & Harvey hoed corn & attended to some milling. Br. Wells worked a little in the garden.

Day fair till towards night & the weather only moderately warm. Walked in company with Br. Wells to Leroy to meeting, where he had an appointment to preach. Called at Marlin’s before meeting. After meeting walked back with Calvin & took tea with him. Rode home with Elon from thence.

Day fair except a few clouds in the morning. Temperature about the same as yesterday. Worked at the Chamber closet. Luman worked at breaking up summer fallow & Harvey brought home a bull from Barna Turner’s & then worked at hoing corn. Br. Wells returned from Leroy.

Fore part of the day fair, cloudy towards night & showers in the evening. Worked at the closet door case in the chamber. Luman finished the summer fallow. Harvey hoed corn & attended to some other matters. Benjamin & Lurenda having been to Troy called & took supper.

Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair. Put the jambs & lintels in the door cases in the bedroom in the chamber. The boys mowed the grass in the meadow east of the house & Luman hauled up a load of boards from the mill for Phillips. Br. Wells hoed some in the garden. Br. Rockwell brot Pop home.

Day partially fair & not very warm. Finished the door cases in the northeast bedroom in the chamber. In the forenoon Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Boards, & Harvey finished hoeing the corn above the orchard, & in the afternoon they hauled in loads of hay. Br. Wells went over to Bunyan’s.

Day fair. Drouth getting to be very severe. Made the case for the bedroom window. The boys mowed in the forenoon, & in the afternoon hauled in in a load that was left yesterday. Br. Wells returned from Bunyan’s At night Luman brought home a calf that he bought of Sherman.

Fair & dry. Put in the panel wo?? beads &c to the window case, went to the P.O. & got the papers. I read some. The boys hauled in two loads of hay & hauled some for Ed. Wife & Amanda went up to visit Eliza & returned at night. Ed., this afternoon, took away the sheep he had bought of me.

Day fair, except some clouds towards night, & warm & sultry. Remained about the house till afternoon then with wife & Ed. & Sarah went up to the schoolhouse near Bunyan’s & heard a discourse by Br. Wells. Called a short time after meeting at Mr. Bunyan’s, & on our return had an axle of the waggon break.

Another sultry day. Thunder showers towards night but they passed around us. Worked at putting in the studs & arch timbers to the recess in the bedroom. The boys commenced harvesting the rye on the hill.

The weather continues fair, warmer, & dry. Put on the base & inner facing to the recess. The boys finished cutting & binding the rye on the hill. Mr. Andrus came home with Luman from Templar meeting last night & remained till after breakfast. Br. Wells returned this morning.

Forenoon fair affording an opportunity to see the eclipse in the morning. Afternoon cloudy & rain commenced falling towards night. Put up the pilasters to the recess. The boys finished putting up the rye & then went to mowing in the orchard above the house. Br. Wells helped them put up a part of it.

Morning cloudy, afternoon fair & the weather very warm. Went with wife & Br. Wells & the Doctor & Amanda down to Franklin to visit at Smiley’s, returning at night. The boys worked at making a hay rigging for the waggon.

Day fair & very warm. Worked at the entablature of the recess in the north east bedroom in the chamber. The boys finished cutting the grass in the meadow back of the house & got it all into the barn making four loads. Br. Wells helped them get it in.

Forenoon cloudy with a little sprinkling of rain, & some light thundershowers in the afternoon. Weather very warm. Worked at putting on the crown & architrave mouldings on the entablature & base & capitals on the pilasters, of the recess. The boys commenced harvesting the wheat.

Day fair except a few clouds in the afternoon. Moderately warm weather. Walked with Br. Wells to Leroy & attended meeting there, he delivering a very interesting discourse. Called at Marlin’s before meeting & at Calvin’s after, took tea there & attended meeting at the Bunyan schoolhouse.

Considerable portion of the day, with a slight shower in the afternoon & weather not very warm. Finished the capitals of the pilasters & put on the fret work. The boys finished cutting & putting up the wheat & mowed a little below the road. In the afternoon Br. Rockwell & his wife make a short call.

Day fair & warmer at the close. Boiled some potatoes for the hogs, helped the boys some at unloading grain, & worked some at putting on the base in the bedroom. The boys hauled in the rye making six loads. Eliza & Mr. Hiram Rockwell called in the forenoon.

Day fair & considerably warm. Drouth growing more severe. Finished the base of the bedroom & did some lathing there besides attending to matters on the farm. The boys mowed the clover below the road & hauled in two loads. The commenced that over the creek.

Day principally fair & warm. A little sprinkling of rain in the forenoon & in the afternoon. Worked some at lathing & some at repairing fences. The boys with Elisha Bailey’s son finished mowing the clover over the creek & hauled in the wheat – three loads – & mowed some east of the waggon house.

Day fair & moderately warm. No abatement of the drouth. Worked some at lathing the bedroom & repaired the hogpen & shut up the pigs. The boys with Elisha’s son mowed some & got in three loads of hay from over the creek & one from the meadow below the road.

Fair warm weather continues. Worked some at lathing & spent some time in reading. The boys with Ransome Bailey worked at haying & got into the barn all they had mowed. Towards night Azor & Eliza came & staid with us over night.

Day fair & the weather considerably cool. Did some chores & commenced to lay the floor in the parlour bedroom. The boys got in the hay they mowed yesterday. Br. Wells assisted them some. In the forenoon Luman got the tire sot on the waggon at Griffins.

Weather continues fair & is decidedly warmer than yesterday. Worked some at the bedroom floor but did but little besides chores. The boys cradled the spring wheat in the forenoon, & in the afternoon Luman commenced cutting the oats & Harvey mowed. Br. Wells went to Drakes’s.

Fore part of the day fair. Clouds & high wind in the afternoon bringing a little rain. Not feeling very well did no work of any consequence. Luman cradled oats till it rained, & Harvey mowed some & put up a few cocks of hay.

Heavy thunder showers in the morning commencing early, & balance of the day partially fair. Did nothing today about the same as yesterday. Luman hauled a load of Boards for Phillips frrom mill to R.R. Jack worked at grooving the planks of the barn floor.

Day fair and the weather very warm. Intended to go to meeting at Leroy today, but several circumstances conspired to hinder. Br. Wells went over there to attend his apointment. Amanda came over in the afternoon.

The weather continues fair & very warm. Finished the floor of the parlor bedroom & the adjoining closets. Luman finished cradling the oats over the creek & the piece west of the barn. Harvey mowed some & they got in a load of hay. Jack worked at the barn floor.

Very fair, very warm, with clouds at night & a little rain. Finished the pug yard & let the pigs out of the pen into it. The boys with Chas. Avery got in the spring wheat, a load of hay & one load of oats. Jack finished the barn floor. Br. Wells returned.

Day fair except a considerable shower in the afternoon. Made preparation & commenced the parlor floor. The boys & Charles finished raking & binding the oats over the creek and hauled in one load. After the shower the went to mowing. Bunyan made a call in the afternoon.

Day fair & warm. Worked a small portion of the time at the parlor floor. The boys mowed in the forenoon & in the afternoon they raked & hauled in three loads of hay. They had Ransom Bailey to help them. Towards night Smiley & Lurenda came & staid with us.

Day fair with clouds towards night threatning rain. Did nothing today, of any account except chores. The boys had Charles Avery to help them today & Parsons in the afternoon. They finished the haying getting in 4 loads of oats & 2 of hay. Smiley & Lurenda went to Troy & brot home our rolls(?).

Rained in the night & cleared off in the morning. Balance of the day fair. Worked a little at the parlor floor & spent some time at the Corners waiting for the mail. Harvey went with team & hauled a load of Boards for Phillips from the mill to the R.R.

Day partially cloudy, threatning rain at night. Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon & heard Br. Wells discourse. In the afternoon went with wife & Br. Wells over to Drake’s & took tea there. Luther called in the morning, & attended meeting with us.

Commenced raining in the night & continued through the day. Worked part of the time at the parlor floor. Luman threshed the scattering oats left on the barn floor & attended to some of the chores. Harvey unable to do anything, having a felon on his finger.

Weather fair & tolerably warm. Took up a part of the old floor & excavated a place for the east chimney. Luman hauled two loads of boards from the mill & one to the R.R. for Phillips. Fair & warm weather continues. Worked at trimming the sleepers and laying the foundation for the chimney & helped Luman get in a load of oats. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of boards for Phillips & then raked and bound the last of the oats & got them into the barn. Harvey did some errands.

Day warm & fair. Went in the morning to see Horace Stone about getting some more stone from his quarry for fireplaces, & called a short time at Harvey’s. & then returned home. The boys commenced to drag & plow the summer fallow using two teams.

Forenoon fair & warm. In the afternoon we had very heavy thunder storms which continued till night. Worked a little at underpinning the east end of the house. The boys worked at the fallow in the forenoon & afternoon Luman threshed some grain for milling.

Weather clear & cloudy by turns & not very warm. Finished the floor in the north east room. The boys some seed wheat & sowed six bushels on the summer fallow, but did not finish the piece. Harvey dragged with Pop & one of Luman’s colts in the afternoon.

Weather continues fair & is tolerably warm. Worked a little at door cases in the forenoon & attended the primary election in the afternoon. Luman came home bringing a load of boards for Phillips which he took to the R.R. . Harvey finished dragging the wheat that was sown.

Weather fair & warm. Walked to Leroy & attended meeting there. Heard a discourse by Br. Wells. After meeting called a short time at Marlin’s & then walked down to Franklin on my way to Towanda to attend court as a juror. Called & staid over night at Smiley’s.

Day fair & the weather warm. Benjamin went with his team and carried me with his brother Joseph as far as Greenwood on our way to Towanda. Attended court in the afternoon & in the evening went into the Republican convention. Engaged my board with Benjamin Wilcox.

Day fair & pleasant & the weather continues moderately warm. Attended court & was chosen on the first jury of which I was elected foreman. Drawn on another & challenged. In the afternoon drawn again & trial not concluded. In the evening went in to witness the Democratic or Hunker convention.

The weather continues fair and similar to the preceeding portion of the week. Took a stroll in the morning in the western part of the town with Frank. Smith. Attended court & after the verdict was drawn on another case, was elected foreman & rendered verdict. In the evening called at several places.

Weather continues warm. Fore part of the day fair & showers in the afternoon. Attended court. Drawn on jury & elected foreman. After verdict, drawn again & challenged. Towards night I was drawn on the last case & deft. pleading guilty the jury was discharged. Took supper, paid bill, received pay, & walked 12 miles to Smiley’s.

Weather tolerably fair & continues quite warm. Walked home from Smiley’s calling at the sash factory & the steam mill. The boys had finished the wheat & hauled several loads of boards. Harvey hauled two loads of boards for Phillips to the R.R. today taking one from the mill. Mr. Phillips & his son called & took a ???? of me for ???? purposes. Luman away to Troy.

Commenced raining in the night & continued cloudy, & rainy through the day. Harvey went with Drake’s boys to drive the hogs, with some from Drake’s to Troy for Redington. Went to help them get them started, & then went to the tannery & got some nails of Martin. Luman got the waggon repaired.

Day partially cloudy & considerably warmer. Assisted Br. Rockwell -- who came down for the purpose – to castrate eight pigs & four calves, & fixed a place in the kitchen for drying apples. Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips. Harvey returned from Troy.

Day fair & quite warm. Repaired fence to stop the pigs and selected & prepared some boards for grounding &c in the library. Luman went away sometime in the night to attend the N. Y. state fair today at Elmira. Harvey worked at mowing & raking buckwheat.

Weather partially cloudy & not very warm. Worked a little at the library and attended the election in the afternoon. Mr. Bunyan returned with me & staid a short time. Luman hauled a half load, Harvey a load, & John a load of boards for Phillips. Orrin Westgate here at night.

Day fair & warm. Worked at the library & finished the grounding, leaving the principal part of the work to be done after plastering. Harvey went up to the R.R. with load of boards & then went to work with Luman & Parsons at picking & husking corn on the flat. In the our folks had an apple bee.

Day clear & cloudy with showers in the afternoon. Warm weather continues. Worked at the unfinished part of the front stairs & posted accounts for Griffin in the evening. The boys with Parsons worked at picking & husking corn, hauling corn up to the house, & hauling wood. Luman got a waggon tire sot in the morning.

Day fair & moderately warm. Made & put on the mouldings to the front stairs. Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips, & Harvey & Parsons worked at gathering the winter apples. Br. Hubbill called in the middle of the day & staid over. Br. Wells returned at night from Canton. Br. Williams from Alba called.

Day fair & warm weather continues. Pu in the mouldings around the stair case at the head of the front(?) stairs. The boys finished gathering the winter apples & attended to some other matters. Br. Roby called in the morning. Eliza came in the afternoon & Luther & Sally at night.

Day partially cloudy & cooler towards night with fall of snow in the evening. Walked to Leroy & attended meeting there. Discourse by Br. Wells. He returned with me calling at Drake’s where we met Smiley & Lurenda. Took tea with them.

Ground covered with snow in the morning which disappeared in the course of the day. Cloudy till towards night. Worked a little at the back of the book case. Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips. Harvey & Parsons worked at sorting corn in the chamber & in the afternoon they husked some on the flat.

Principal part of the day fair & the weather warm. Finished the back of the bookcase. Luman hauled some corn for Burton Baker, & brought up a load of boards for Phillips. Harvey & Parsons repaired brush fence over the creek in the forenoon, & picked & husked corn in the afternoon. Br. Wells went to Leroy.

Day cloudy, rainy & very dark. Worked some at the bookcase. The boys hauled up a load of corn & a load of lath from the steam mill, cleaned some buckwheat, made a crib, & repaired the pig pen. Drake brot a shoat to exchange for one of ours. Jack called, Br. Wells returned.

Day cloudy & cool. Worked at the book case. Luman hauled part of a load of whitewood & basswood lumber that we bought of Harry, & then hauled wood for Ad. Harvey & Parsons husked corn on the flat. Br. Wells went up to the Huddle in the afternoon. Wife went over to see Amanda who is sick.

Weather similar to that of yesterday. Business same as that of yesterday. The boys finished husking the corn on the flat & hauled up the last of it making 150 bu. of ears in all. They finished the crib & partly filled it with the poorer sort. Towards night Harvey hauled up a load of boards for Phillips.

Rainy night & heavy rain through the entire day & evening producing a great flood. Worked at the bookcase. Made & put in ten of the shelves. The boys sorted & arranged the corn in the chamber & the crib, thrashed some rye & attended to various in door matters. Br. Rogers called & staid.

The flats almost covered with water this morning. Day cloudy & some more rain. Much damage done by the flood to Mill dams bridges &c. Remained at home during the day with the family. Amanda rode over here in the middle of the day & walked home at night.

Rainbow in the morning. Middle of the day fair & cloudy again in the afternoon. Finished putting shelves into the book case & spent sometime with Mr. Bunyan who called & also a German stranger. Br. Wells worked at lathing the library. The boys worked at husking corn above the orchard.

Day cloudy except part of the afternoon. Had a little more rain. Weather continues warm. Put the facing on the bookcase. Br. Wells worked at lathing in the library & northeast room. Luman & Parsons hauled two loads of sand from Luther’s & Harvey worked at repairing fences on the flat that were damaged by the flood.

Principal part of the day fair & warm. Inserted the newell post & made the rail. Br. Wells gathered some apples to dry. The boys hauled some wood in the forenoon & in the afternoon they hauled buckwheat & threshed it with the colts. In the evening I posted accounts for Griffin.

Day cloudy with cool south wind. Walked with Br. Wells to Leroy, called a short time at Marlin’s & then attended meeting where Br. Wells delivered a discourse. He remained to speak there again in the evening & I returned in company with Br. Churchill.

Warm cloudy day with a little rain. Wind continues in the south. Went to Troy with wife & Amanda, broke the waggon on the way & had to repair. Took firkin of butter to Pomeroy $12.60, bought a few articles of Ballard & went to Azor’s & staid all night. The boys dug potatoes.

Rainy night, clear morning, fair day, west wind & cooler. Azor came down in the morning & attended meeting with us at the Huddle where Br. Wells delivered a discourse. Family went over to Drake’s to tea & there Azor & Eliza went home. Br. Wells attended meeting at Huddle in evening.

Froze some last night. Day fair & cool. Put on the shelves & finished the chimney pieces. Harvey carried some potatoes into the cellar & did several other small jobs. Luman returned from Sullivan co. at night. Br. Wells gathered the last of the apples from the upper orchard. Elon called in the morning & in the evening.

Rained a little before dawn. Day cloudy with a little sleet falling in the afternoon. Worked a little at lathing the ceiling of the northeast room & attended the presidential election. Luman hauled up a load of boards from steam mill for our use & Harvey another to be taken to the R.R. for Phillips. George & Amy called in evening.

Day fair & quite pleasant. Weather some warmer. Finished lathing the ceiling of the northeast room in the forenoon, & in the afternoon spent some time fixing in the stair rail. The boys helped Drake again today except that Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips in the afternoon. Sam called.

Forenoon cloudy, afternoon & evening rainy, & weather moderately warm. Did nothing worth mentioning to day – Luman dug potatoes on the flat till towards night. Harvey hauled two loads of boards from the mill for Phillips & took one of them to the R.R. Ed. called & staid over night.

Rained all the past night & during the entire day, causing high water in the streams again. Prepared some stories & laid the bottom of the eastern chimney. The boys assisted me some, did some business at the blacksmith’s, & attended to chores.

Rain continued to fall during the night, and moderately through the day, with no indications of immediate fair weather. I intended to have gone to meeting with Br. Wells at Leroy. But on account of the rain we concluded to stay at home.

Monday, 12

Day cloudy & without rain. At night some signs of fair weather again. Prepared a place north of the house & made a mortarbed. The boys with the team worked on the road till in the afternoon Harvey went to the R.R. with load of boards for Phillips. Mr. Bunyan called.

Tuesday, 13

Day cloudy till towards night, then clear & pleasant. Completed the mortar bed & placed the lime box & in the afternoon went over the creek to cut some poles and crotches to make a shelter over it. Luman went to Canton & got 30 bu. lime. Harvey helped Drake at threshing. Br. Wells attended the teacher’s examination.

Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair & warm. Helped the boys unload the lime & spent the forenoon in disposing of it. Afternoon lathed some in the chamber. Luman went to Troy & got a load of brick. Harvey helped Drake again in the forenoon. Br. Wells Took care of the turnips & went to Bunyan’s.

Morning frosty, day fair, warm & pleasant. Went with the boys & team to Horace Stone’s in Leroy, & quarried & brought home a load of stone for the fireplaces in the north east room & the library. Mr. Stone assisted. I took dinner with him. Br. Wells has not returned from Bunyan’s. S. A. Rockwell called in the evening & took assessment.

Another fair & pleasant day. Worked at dressing stones for the fireplaces. The boys hauled the corn from above the orchard into the barn to husk it there. The also hauled some potatoes off the flat to the cellar, & some poles &c, for shelter for mortarbed. Parsons worked on our acccount for Mr. Martin.

Weather tolerably warm and fair. Worked at dressing stones & building fireplaces. Harvey assisted. Luman, with Parsons & Mathew’s boy worked at digging potatoes on the flat. They brought up a load at night, leaving part of a load there. Received a letter from Mr. Atkins.

Rained a little in the morning & continued rainy through the day. Weather continues warm. Fixed some covers over the lime which stands out in boxes. Remained in the house the balance of the day. Boy? called with a line for Br. Wells. Luman carried to him at Bunyan’s. Pop died.

Principal part of the day cloudy with a little more rain. Weather cooler with a squall towards night. Worked at the fireplaces. The boys carried the potatoes into the cellar & attended to several other matters. Valentine called in the middle of the day, & Br. Churchill towards night.

Day cloudy & cold, similar to yesterday. A slight snow fell last night which did not thaw during the day. Remained at home through the day & had no company except that Ed. called two or three times in the course of the day, & Lathan Andrews came in towards night.

Day fair & a little more moderate than yesterday. Worked part of the day at the chimnye & spent some time with Smiley who came in the afternoon. Luman hauled a load of boards for Phillips from the mill to the R.R. & Harvey hauled another load up from the mill.

Snow commenced falling in the morning & continues moderately through the day. Finished the stone work of the chimney & commenced the brick part at the chamber floor. Luman hauled the load of boards to the R.R. & got some shoeing done & brought up another load at night. Harvey worked about the house & barn. Harrison Ross called.

Day cloudy & the weather moderate. Afternoon rainy. Made & put in two cases for picture frames over the fire place in the library. Luman went to Monroe to carry Drake on his way to court. Harvey hauled two loads of boards for Phillips to the R.R. taking one of them from the mill, & hauled a little hay to Roby.

Day cloudy with intervals of sunshine & some flurries of snow. The boys hauled boards for Phillips. Luman with the Doctor’s team hauled three loads away from the mill & took one of them to the R.R. Harvey hauled two loads form the mill to the R.R. I worked at & finished the picture cases.

Day clear, cloudy stormy cold & blustering. Did but little today besides keeping fire & attending to the hogs. Luman hauled up to the R.R. the load of boards he had on the waggon & took Drake’s team home. Harvey hauled up two loads that were left on the way.

Day fair & very cold, especially at the close. Worked some in the forenoon at slitting up some plank for doors. At night walked up to Azor’s & finding the doors locked, got in at a window. Luman went to the steam mill & settled with Phillips. Mrs. Merry came to visit us.

Very cold morning. Day fair & the weather grew more moderate. Went to the village, bought some door trimmings of Ballard, settled with Tannery, & got home towards night. Luman hauled a load of leather & a load of hides fro Mr. Martin. Br. Wells came last night. Mrs. Merry remained, & Drake & Amanda here in the eve.

Weather continues fair & is mor moderate than it has been the last two days. Remained about the house during the day. Towards night Br. Wells departed for his school & Mrs. Merry went back to Sylvester Taylor’s. In the evening wife went over to Brigham’s.

Day fair & weather moderate. Worked part of the day at dressing stuff for doors. The boys husked some corn in the barn & took a load of hay up to Roby. Luman got the horses shod at Griffin’s, & went over to Drake’s to make a bargain with him for some timber for ties. Br. Hubbill called & tarried, & also Leander.

Day cloudy, cold, & the latter part a little stormy. Put the locks on the front & rear doors in the forenoon, & in the afternoon worked a little at dressing stuff for doors. The boys worked at chopping & hauling wood from Burton Baker’s. Evening quite rainy & weather more moderate.

Rained through the night and rained through the day. Worked at dressing stuff for doors & layed out some for framing. Luman went down to the Steam mill & got a load of edgings & some things out of the store. Harvey husked some corn in the barn.

Day partially cloudy & weather mild. Worked part of the day at framing doors & in the evening assisted in settling Mr. Griffin account with Alfred Leonard. The boys commenced making R.R. ties over in Drake’s woods – They buy the timber of him at 5 cents a piece. They made 18 today.

Morning & forepart of the day rainy. At night the weather colder. Finished & filled in the door between the northeast room & dining room. The boys husked some corn, went to mill, & attended to some other matters. Smiley came up with Lurenda, & after dinner he returned & left her to visit a few days. Loren Leonard called.

Day fair & the weather continues moderate. Remained at home through the day with the family, Lurenda only attending meeting. In the afternoon Drake & Amanda were here & Jack & Letty called with Ed besides. At the close of the evening meeting Leander came home with Luman.

The weather continues about the same as it was yesterday except that it is some colder. Worked a little on a door for the closet in the north east room. The boys, with Sterling to help, made 30 ties. Luman bought 2 calves of Collins. Heman & Charles Ross made a call. Ad. came & got 4 bu. buckwheat.

Weather continues cold & fair. Worked a spell in the morning & finished the closet door. Azor & Eliza cam & Smiley with his brother Thomas & his wife. We all went to Drake’s & spent the day. The boys & Sterling made 30 ties. Collins brought the calves. Griffin here in the evening.

Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather remains cold. Fitted in the closet door & framed another, besides spending some time with Mr. Bunyan who came in the afternoon. Robert Shedden also made a call. The boys & Sterling worked at making ties. In the afternoon they commenced hauling them out of woods.

Day partially fair & weather moderately cold. Made panels, finished, fitted, and hung the door between the north east room & library. The boys with Sterling worked at ties – sawing, trimming, & hauling them out to the road near the tannery. Broke a bobsled & had to quit hauling before night.

Day cloudy & cold. Hung two doors & put the latches on to them, besides chopping wood for fires. The boys & Sterling worked at the tie business making some in the woods, hauling out some, & taking 16 to the R.R. Amanda here in the afternoon & Leander at night.

Weather cloudy & cold through the day. Made a door for the cupboard over the fireplace in the northeast room. Hung to door & finished the cupboard. Luman worked at ties alone & Harvey hauled two loads to the R.R. making fifty in all. They have about 80 more made.

A little snow fell towards morning. Day cloudy with snow falling moderately the principal part of the time. Weather warmer so that water ran off the eaves in the afternoon.Staid at home with wife. No company except a few youngsters who called in.
