January
Saturday, 1
Principal part of the day fair weather mild, & thaw continues. Continued to work at the Sitting Room – putting up some more of the dado, & a portion of the surbase. Harvey hauled up to the R.R. the load of boards for Taylor, which he brought up from the mill yesterday.
Sunday, 2
Fore part of the day fair & pleasant; latter part cloudy. Weather moderate. Remained at home with family during the day. Luman attended meeting at the Huddle in the evening & came home quite unwell. Several youngsters here in the course of the day.
Monday, 3
The weather through the day was very similar to that of yesterday. Found Luman, in the morning very sick with fever. Our remedies failing to arrest it, went in the afternoon & called on Drake to attend him. He bled him & ordered physic. We attended him through the night. His fever abated somewhat towards morning. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor.
Tuesday, 4
Day cloudy, weather moderate, & a little snow fell towards night. Spent the day in attending upon Luman, who having had no operation of physic, was no better in the morning. Went again, after breakfast to call Drake. He gave him some calomel which soon operated, & he was better. Amanda spent the day here. Drake called at night.
Wednesday, 5
Weather some colder & principal part of the day cloudy. Continued my attendence upon Luman. His fever having subsided he appears some better. Amanda came again & the doctor called at night. Mr. Bunyan came in the afternoon. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor & went after Lurenda in the afternoon.
Thursday, 6
Not much change in the weather; a little snow covering the ground but no sleighing on the road. Attended to some matters about the house & to the care of Luman, who is able to sit up some, the fever appearing to have entirely abated. Elon, & several others, in the course of the day, called in to see him. In the evening a thaw commenced.
Friday, 7
Thawed through the past night & continued through the day. Cloudy. Rode with Harvey to the Steam Mill. Traded some there & walked home. Harvey brought up a load of boards for Taylor & went with them to the R.R. Luman continues to improve, sitting up the principal part of the day.
Saturday, 8
Day clear & cloudy by turns, afternoon & evening the weather cold. Luman getting better. Harvey hauled and chopped some wood. Eliza came home with Orrin Westgate. Br. Wells came over to see us, & went home with the Doctor & Amanda who spent the evening here.
Sunday, 9
The day very cold & blustering, with occasional flurries of snow. Remained at home during the day. Luman continues to improve gradually. Lurenda & Eliza returned to their places with Orrin Westgate. Quite a number of youngsters called in the course of the day. Jefferson & Sarah Gee came in the evening.
Monday, 10
Day fair, and the weather extremely cold. Went up to the Huddle & got the Tribune, traded a little at the store, & & agreed with Taylor for a quantity of oats. Luman walked out. He went up to Brigham’s & over to Drake’s. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor from mill to R.R. Kept fire in the cellar in the evening.
Tuesday, 11
Day Cloudy & very cold, but a little more moderate than yesterday. Did some writing, cut some wood, & fixed a bin in the cellar for potatoes. Luman continues to improve. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor from the mill, & left them on the road above Valentine’s, on account of ice.
Wednesday, 12
Day cloudy & the weather much warmer. Thawed all day & in the evening. Commenced working at the house again. Finished the dado in the Sitting Room. Luman continues to improve. He rode to West Burlington & back. Harvey hauled stump & roots for wood from the fields north. Made a call with wife at Brigham’s in the evening.
Thursday, 13
Thaw continues through the night. Morning fair & warm & continued so through the day. Prepared & dressed the stuff for the surbase in the Sitting Room. Luman rode down to the Steam Mill & up to Ayres job in Troy. Harvey got the horses shod & hauled up a load of boards for Taylor from the mill. Jim Gee called. Also Alanson.
Friday, 14
Rained some in the night, froze a little in the morning, day cloudy, warm, & wet. Put in the surbase & commenced getting out mouldings for door & window cases, in Sitting Room. Went over to Drake’s & took supper at Eliza’s. Harvey went to R.R. with two loads of boards for Taylor. Luman cut wood & did the chores.
Saturday, 15
Clear & cloudy, alternately, thro the day. Weather warm, but some cooler at night. Worked at getting out, & putting on the mouldings to window & door frames in the Sitting Room. At night, went with wife & Drake’s folks to visit at Barna Turner’s. Harvey hauled load of boards for Taylor, from mill to R.R. Luman did chores & mended Harvey’s boots. Oscar called.
Sunday, 16
Day cloudy & the weather not so warm as for some days past. Remained at home through the day with wife. Amanda came over & spent some time with us. Towards night Amy came in & looked over the newspapers.
Monday, 17
Cloudy & cool, with brisk north west wind & several flurries of snow in the course of the day. Rode to Troy with Percival, got a set of chairs of Mr. Oliver & some knob latches for doors, with several other articles at the stores. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor from mill to R.R. Luman did chores. John Bush called in eve.
Tuesday, 18
Day fair & pleasant, & the weather continues cool. Thawed a little. Put the knobs & latches on to the doors & spent some time at Mott’s shop to get a lock repaired which had broken. Luman went over to Leroy & got our leather. Harvey hauled a load of boards for Taylor to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill. In the evening we attended a surprise party at Harry Bailey’s.
Wednesday, 19
The weather continues fair & is quite moderate. Finished dressing & putting mouldings on the door cases in the Sitting Room, & dressed the face & jambs of the fireplace. Harvey went up to the R.R. with load of boards, & hauled another from the mill for Taylor. Luman cut some wood & did chores.
Thursday, 20
Weather similar to that of yesterday except that it is warmer. Commenced making & worked at the chimney piece for fireplace in the Sitting Room. Harvey hauled two loads of boards to the R.R. for Taylor, bringing one from the mill. Wife went down to Samuel’s with Robert & Eliza.
Friday, 21
Weather warm, commenced raining early in the morning, continued till afternoon, changed to snow & continued through the day & evening. Attended the town election, agreed with Roby to make a lounge & two tables for the Sitting Room. Mr Bunyan returned & took supper with me. Luman attended the election for the first time as a voter. Br. Wells called in the evening & staid.
Saturday, 22
Weather fair in the forenoon, squally in the afternoon, & quite cold. Worked at, & nearly finished the chimney piece. Boys did nothing more than cutting some wood & chores. Br. Wells remains with us. Orrin Westgate came in the afternoon. In the evening Sam. & Jack called. Wife visited at Ezra Baxter’s in the afternoon.
Sunday, 23
Principal part of the day cloudy, with intervals of sunshine, & the weather very cold. Remained at home with the family, Luman attending meeting in the evening at the Corners. Br. Wells remained till night, & then departed for his school. Br. Champney called in the evening, & George in the morning.
Monday, 24
Weather fair, & is a little more moderate than yesterday but remains considerably cold yet. Worked a little at various points about the Sitting Room & have finished the wood work. There being a little snow on the ground, Luman down to the Steam Mill with the team, & commenced hauling some logs for them. Harvey attended to the chores & commenced his attendence at school.
Tuesday, 25
Day fair & the weather quite mild. The snow thawed considerably. Repaired bobsled in the morning, filed a handsaw & commenced working in the chamber. Luman hauled logs at the Steam Mill for Phillips. Harvey did the chores & went to school. Jim Gee called in the rforenoon.
Wednesday, 26
Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair & pleasant. Weather continues mild. Worked some in the chamber, spent a part of afternoon with Mr. Henson who called to bottom some chairs, & at night went over to Drake’s & took supper there. Luman went to Steam Mill to haul logs, broke his sled, & then hauled load boards for Taylor to R.R. Harvey at school.
Thursday, 27
Cloudy through the day, weather quite moderate & a little rain at night. Continued my work in the chamber. Made and inserted a window frame to light the Entry & fitted & primed the sash – Luman hauled a load of ties for Erastus from Drake’s hill to the R.R. & brought another down as far as the Huddle. Harvey attended school. J. H. Ross called.
Friday, 28
Morning rainy, afternoon fair, and the weather warm. Snow all gone. Worked some in the chamber at putting in studs & various other things. Luman hauled two loads of ties for Erastus to the R.R. one from the Huddle & the other from Drake’s hill. Darias called in the morning, & Br. Rockwell after noon.
Saturday, 29
Morning cloudy & foggy, balance of the day fair, & the weather continues quite mild. Made a batch of putty in the morning, set the glass & put in the window that lights the ante room in the chamber. Spent the afternoon with Mr. Bunyan who called on me. Luman hauled two loads of ties for Erastus. Rec. a letter or circular from Greely & Co. N. Y.
Sunday, 30
Fore part of the day cloudy, latter part more pleasant. Weather considerably colder than for several days past. Remained about the house during the day. In the forenoon Valentine & Alfred were here, in the afternoon the Doctor & Amanda called & remained till after tea. George also came in & Orrin Westgate was here. At night Luman went to carry back the girls, who came home Last evening.
Monday, 31
Morning cloudy & cold, balance of the day fair & considerably warmer. Attended Road Commissioners meeting in the Huddle. Declined to serve with them. Luman hauled load of boards to R.R. for Taylor. George called in afternoon. Mr. Tidd at night, & in the evening Lurenda came in with Miss Calkin.

Tuesday, 1
Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather continues quite mild. Worked some in the chamber at putting up partition stud around the west, front bedroom. Luman hauled a load of boards for Taylor to the R.R. & got of him ten bu. oats. Laythan Andrus & Alva called in the evening & after them Erastus called.
Wednesday, 2
Weather very much like that of yesterday. At night it began to snow moderately & continued through the evening. Finished putting up the studs in the bedroom over the Sitting Room, & commenced to work at the Closets in the front. Luman hauled, in the forenoon, a load of ties to the R.R. from Drake’s house, for Erastus, & in the afternoon he hauled a load of boards for Barnes. Mr. Griswold the school teacher came to board with us.
Thursday, 3
Ceased snowing in the morning, continued cloudy, & weather some colder. Worked at the closets in the chamber. Luman got the horses shod & repaired a bobsled in the forenoon & towards night went down to the Steam Mill & hauled a load of logs & got some horse feed. Mr. Griswold came again at night.
Friday, 4
Cloudy, with short intervals of sunshine. Forenoon cold, & afternoon colder with flurries of snow. Assisted Jim Gee to regulate his school accounts in the forenoon, & spent the afternoon with Bunyan & John Bush. Luman hauled two loads boards for Barnes to R.R. having brought up one from mill last night. Ward Warren called in the forenoon & Daniel Pomeroy also.
Saturday, 5
Day fair & pleasant, weather cold & freezing, with the exception of the middle of the day, when it thawed a little. In the forenoon finished one of the front closets in the chamber, except the door; & in the afternoon repaired the window in the Hall Bed Room. Luman hauled up a load of boards from the mill for Barnes on sleigh; & then went with waggon & took another load from teh mill to R.R.
Sunday, 6
Weather more moderate, day cloud with snow falling a considerable portion of the time. Remained about the house during the day. In the evening wife & family attended a protracted methodist meeting at the Corners; which has been in progress some time, having commenced on the 19th of last month.
Monday, 7
Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair, & weather moderate. Commenced the other Closet in the chamber over the Sitting Room & spent sometime with Mr. Bunyan who called in the afternoon. Luman hauled two loads of boards from the mill, & one to the R.R. for Barnes. Mr. Griswold came at night. Wrote to Greeley & Co. in the evening.
Tuesday, 8
Weather cloudy through the day with cold southerly wind. Having agreed to meet Bunyan at the Huddle in the morning, went there & waited for him till 11 o’clock, proceeded with him to Troy, going by way of Wilcox & Ross’ job & taking dinner there, & rode home with Elon. Luman hauled for Barnes a load of boards from the mill & two to the R.R. Mr. Griswold here at night.

Day cloudy & the middle & latter part rainy. Weather quite mild. Worked in the forenoon at the Closet in the chamber. In the afternoon went up to the Huddle calling at Roby’s shop, Griffin’s shop, & Taylor’s store. Luman hauled tow loads of boards for Barnes to the R.R., they having been brot from the mill before. Mr. Griswold here.
Thursday, 10
Day fair but quite cold & blustering. Worked a part of the day at the eastern Closet in the chamber over the Sitting Room. Luman went with team to haul logs for the Steam Mill. He took the waggon along & brought up a load of boards at night for Taylor. George called in the afternoon.
Friday, 11
Weather continues fair & is a little more moderate. Worked some in the forenoon in the chamber & finished the other Closet in the Bed Room. Afternoon went up to the Huddle, calling at the shops of Roby & Griffin, & at Taylor’s store. Luman took up load of boards to the R.R. for Taylor hauled two loads of logs for Steam Mill & brot up another load of boards for Taylor. Sam. & Amanda called & staid all night.
Saturday, 12
Day cloudy & weather mild. A light fall of snow. Lots of visitors. Sam went away after breakfast, Amanda remained. Mr. Upham & his wife & dau came with Lurenda. Mr. Rockwell brot Eliza Amanda came over, Stephen & Fiche Wm. & Vesta & Mary came towards night. Luman hauled load of boards for Taylor.
Sunday, 13
Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather continues moderate. Amanda came over in the morning to see her uncle Stephen’s folks. They departed before noon. Amanda Shepard went up the road with them. The Doctor came over & took supper with us. At night Luman went with a sleigh & carried the girls back to their schools.
Monday, 14
Day fair & the weather continues remarkably mild for the time of year. Worked part of the day in the chamber at laying out & preparing for making an arch under the roof of the projecion in front of the Bed Room. Luman went down to the Steam Mill, hauled two loads of logs there & a load of boards to the R.R. for Taylor.
Tuesday, 15
Day cloudy, raining some in the afternoon. Weather continues mild. Worked at the Bed Room in the chamber Put up the arch & put on some lath. Luman went down to the Steam Mill & hauled logs there till towards night, & then brought up a load of boards for Taylor. No company today at all.
Wednesday, 16
Thawed all night, day fair, & warm fields are getting bare, & the roads quite muddy. Worked part of the day at putting on the base in the recess under the arch & went up to the store at the Huddle. Luman hauled two loads of boards, which he had here at home, to the R.R. for Taylor. Harvey continues his attendence at school.
Thursday, 17
Morning fair, afterward cloudy, snowing some at night. Wind South & weather mild. Cased the window in the recess of the Bed Room & put on some lath. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. for Taylor. George called in the morning. Jack Drake came in soon after, to have me ascertain the interest on a land contract. Griffin came in the evening.
Friday, 18
Latter part of the night rainy, forenoon cloudy, afternoon fair, & weather moderate. Put the facing onto the arch in the chamber & put on some lath. In the evening wrote a letter to J. D. Montange. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. for Taylor. Jack called in the afternoon & Griffin again at night.
Saturday, 19
Morning fair & ground frozen, cloudy towards night & evening rainy. Worked at lathing in the chamber. Luman hauled a load of boards to Troy for Barnes. The Doctor & Amanda came over & took supper with us. Mr. Wetherck? & Miss Wilson called to see Eliza. They went to West Burlington & brought her back with them. They staid overnight.
Sunday, 20
Rainy through the night, continued through the morning, & till afternoon when the rain was succeeded by a boisterous wind from the west, & cooler weather. Remained at home with wife. Young people attended meeting at the Corners. Towards night our Alba visitors departed, & Eliza went back with Orrin Westgate. George & Amy called in the evening.
Monday, 21
Day cloudy, windy, & quite cold. Went up to the Huddle in the morning with Luman & brought home two small tables for the Sitting Room, that Roby had made, put on a few laths in the chamber & in the evening wrote a letter to Mr. Atkins. Luman got the horses shod & brought home 19 bu. oats from Luman Taylor’s. Br. Rockwell called.
Tuesday, 22
Ground frozen in the morning. Day fair warm & pleasant. Wrote letters to Alfred Bailey & Rhoda, & did but little besides on account of a very severe cold, affecting my lungs. Luman hauled a load of boards for Taylor from the mill to the R.R. Harvey continues his attendence at school. Geo. called in the course of the day.

The weather continues fair, mild & pleasant. Roads getting muddy again. Feel some better than yesterday, but my cold very bad yet. Worked a little in the chamber at lathing & put in the base. In the evening commenced to write a letter to Br. Stephen A.? Shepard in Illinois. Luman hauled a load of boards for Taylor from the mill to R.R. Bunyan called in the evening.

Stormy night & lowry morning. Balance of the day fair, & weather cooler. Worked some at lathing Bed Room in the chamber, & spent considerable time with company. Mr. Arnout? called in the forenoon, Levi Taylor came in the afternoon, & after him Br. Streetor called. The roads are so muddy, that Luman did not use the team to day.
Friday, 25
Ground frozen hard in the morning, cloudy through the day, weather considerably colder, && about two inches of snow fell in the course of the day. Worked at lathing in the forenoon, & in the afternoon wrote a letter to Mr. Kinney at Harrisburg, & went up & delivered it to Levi Taylor. Luman went down to the Steam Mill & hauled up a load of boards for Taylor.
Saturday, 26
Fore part of the day cold & stormy, latter part fair & the weather more mild. Finished lathing the Bed Room in the chamber over the Sitting Room and spent some time repairing a lock on one of the drawers of writing table. Luman, after having some shoeing done, went up to the R.R. with load of Boards for Taylor & brot down some goods for him. Harry & Amanda called in the evening.

Day fair & moderate. Snow nearly gone again. Considerable wind in the evening. Children attended the methodist meeting at the Corners, the series having been continued – almost daily – since the 19th of Jan. In the afternoon went with wife over to the Doctor’s, & took supper there.
Monday, 28
Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather considerably colder than yesterday. Got out the mouldings for the window, doors, & face of the arch, of the Bed Room in chamber & put them on. Luman hauled load of boards for Taylor from Mill to R.R. & brought sown a load of flour for Phillips. Br. Rockwell called in the middle of the day. Griffin in the evening.

Tuesday, 1
Fore part of the day cold with flurries of snow. Latter part fair & more pleasant. Thawed but little. Spent some time with Griffin, assisting him in settlement with L. Jenkins. Worked some in the chamber, back of the Bed Room clearing it out & preparing it for finishing. Luman went down to the Steam Mill with the load of flour, hauled logs there till ngith, & brought up a load of boards for Taylor. Silas Bunyan came & commenced hauling ties.
Wednesday, 2
Day fair & pleasant & the weather a little more moderate. Thawed some. Dressed & put on the trimmings to the upper part of the chamber stairway leading from the Sitting Room. Luman hauled logs at the Steam Mill, & brought up another load of Taylor’s boards. John bush called in the afternoon.
Thursday, 3
Morning cloudy, windy & cold. A storm of sleet commenced before noon & continued through the day & evening. Commenced dressing stuff & laying the floor of the Ante room & back Bed Room in the chamber. Luman being lame did work. He went over to West Burlington & brought Eliza home her school being out. Harvey went up to R.R. with load of Taylor boards.
Friday, 4
Fore part of the day fair & warmer. Latter part cloudy with some snow and rain. Worked at the floor in the chamber same as yesterday. Luman, continuing lame, took some buckwheat from Fowler’s to the mill. Harvey hauled ties with Silas. They, each of them, hauled a load to R.R. & brought another from the hill. Br. Wells came late last evening. He went over to Drake’s towards night.

Day cloudy & dull, & the weather quite moderate. Roads getting very muddy again. Worked a little at the chamber floor, & spent some time reading. Silas & Harvey took their loads of ties to the R.R. & brought each of them another load from the hill to the Huddle. Br. Wells returned from Drake’s. Lurenda came home.

Morning cloudy, balance of the day fair. The weather continues quite mild. Spent the day with the family & Br. Wells at home. Amanda came over in the forenoon. Amy made a call at night. Curtis Calkin, who came with Lurenda last night, & left early this morning, called for her again tonight.
Monday, 7
Morning fair, warm & pleasant. Afternoon cloudy with indications of more rain. Frost nearly out of the ground & roads very muddy. Finished the floors of the ante room & back Bed Room in the chamber. Luman hauled a load of ties from Stottenburn’s(?) to the R.R. Br. Wells made himself a pair of slips. Jim Gee called in the forenoon. George in the afternoon.
Tuesday, 8
Morning cloudy, & principal part of the day rainy, with a little sprinkling of snow at night. Worked at putting up partition studs in the chamber. Br. Wells worked at copying & revising his poem. Luman went down to the sash factory & brought up from the Steam Mill a few planks for partitions. Griffin called in the evening.
Wednesday, 9
Day fair, & the weather very mild & pleasant. Roads very muddy. Finished putting up the studs & commenced getting out & putting on the base in the back Bed Room. Br. Wells went away to stay a spell at Mr. Bunyan’s. The boys worked at getting some wood from the north fields.
Thursday, 10
Day fair & quite warm. The spring birds have made their appearance. Finished the base in the back Bed Room in the chamber & put in false rafters for lathing. Sold 4 cows to D. Lilley for $110.00 & received $1.50 for driving them to his farm in Columbia. Luman commenced breaking up the Hickory field on the hill. Harvey chopped wood at the door.
Friday, 11
Morning & forenoon fair & warm, afternoon cloudy, & evening rainy with brisk wind from the south. Cased & put in the window to the back Bed Room, & commenced putting on the lath. Luman worked at plowing on the hill. Harvey attended to matters about the house & barn. Elon called in the morning & George came in soon after.
Saturday, 12
Heavy rain in the night, causing very high water in the streams. Day fair & warm. Did some lathing & other work in the chamber, & went down to the P.O. for my mail matter & to Robert’s for Wm. Griffin. Luman plowed on the hill. Elon called in the morning & Br. Rockwell in the afternoon, & Doctor Pepper in the evening.
Sunday, 13
The weather continues fair & pleasant and is quite warm and springlike. The roads are becoming considerably dry. Remained at home during the day & evening. Some of the family attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon, & at the Corners in the evening. Edward called in the afternoon. Orrin Westgate spent most of the day here.
Monday, 14
Forenoon fair & warm. Afternoon cloudy windy, & – towards night – rainy. Went to Troy with the boys & team. Helped Harvey drive the cows, sold to Lilley as far as the village, & from thence he proceeded with them alone to Columbia. He staid over night. Did some business at Pomeroy’s, got 12 bu. lime of Paine, & returned with Luman.
Tuesday, 15
Very heavy wind with rain in the night. Forenoon partially clear; afternoon cloudy. Weather continues mild. Put up some clothes hooks in the west Hall, & worked some at lathing. Luman plowed on the hill in the Hickory field. Harvey returned in the afternoon, having staid over night at Uphams. John Bush called in the afternoon.

Weather clear & cloudy, with considerable wind in the forepart of the day. Worked part of the day at lathing in the chamber. Luman finished plowing the hickory field, & brought a load of ties from Stottenburr’s. Bunyan called in the forenoon. Mr. Redington called in the afternoon & I paid $110.00. Jefferson & his wife called in the evening.

Day fair till towards night, then cloudy with indications of rain. Continues warm. Worked in the chamber at lathing the back Bed Room. Silas came in the morning; Luman took off his load of ties, & they went over to Stottenburr’s & got each of them a load & went to R.R. & then went over & got each of them another load. Wife went up to see Valentine’s wife.
Friday, 18
Rainy night, rainy morning, balance of the day cloudy with occasional dashes of rain with high wind & rain in in the evening. Worked at boarding & trimming the garret stairway. Luman & Silas hauled their loads to the R.R. & brought over from the woods, each of them another. Br. McDougall called a short time in the afternoon.
Saturday, 19
High wind & rain in the night causing another freshet, high wind through the day with flurries of snow & colder weather. Worked some at the garret stairway, & fitted in & framed the sidelights in the Hall. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of ties & to Bunyan’s & got some grain for horse feed. Harvey went down to the factory & got some sash. Lurenda came home having concluded her school. John Bush & Valentine called in the afternoon.
Sunday, 20
Boisterous wind through the night, day fair, considerable wind, & weather cool. Attended meeting at the Huddle & heard Br. McDougall. Wife staid to attend the evening meeting. Samuel called & some young poeple, they took tea with us. Towards night went over to the Doctor’s to see them a little while.

They hauled each of them two loads from Stottenburr’s taking the first loads to the R.R. Harvey worked at digging up a pine stump in the dooryard. George called in the morning.

Principal part of the day cloudy with some rain in the forenoon. The weather warm again. Worked at making a cupboard under the garret stairs. Luman & Silas hauled ties. Day fair, warm, & pleasant. Completed the garret stairs & cupboard. Afternoon went with the family to Drake’s sugar works to eat some warm sugar. Luman & Silas hauled ties. Morning warm & fair, – Afternoon cloudy & considerably cooler. Heard the frogs in the morning. Feeling a little unwell did not work much. Went down to the Corners, left a letter at the P.O. for Mr. Erasus(?) Philips(?) & went to the shop & got Abe to make some rods to fasten the partition wall to the chimney in the chamber. Luman hauled two loads of ties from the woods & one to the R.R.

Rained considerable in the course of the night. Morning fair & day mild & pleasant. Boarded the east wall of the Kitchen Chamber. Luman & Silas continue the business of hauling ties. Made a door to open from the Ante Room into the kitchen chamber & spent some time with Elon who called in the afternoon. Luman & Silas made one trip to the R.R. with ties, & another to the woods. Harvey worked at filling the cellar drain.

Day fair & pleasant. Made a door case & hung the door between the anteroom & the Kitchen chamber. Went up to the Huddle & traded a little at the store. Luman hauled two loads of ties to the R.R. which finished the job. Harry Bailey called in the afternoon. Mr. Bunyan called at night & cut some glass for me in the evening.

Forenoon fair & windy, afternoon cloudy & squally, & fair again at night. Put the glass into the side lights in the Hall, put the latch on the Kitchen chamber door, put on some of the base in the Ante Room, & went to the Steam Mill with Luman, traded some there & got some lath & plank of Barnes. In the afternoon Luman brought his Aunt Eliza & Jane to our house for a visit, & Jeff. came in the evening.

Freezing night, day fair & weather warmer. Worked at making door cases in the Ante Room. The boys took up a load of boards for Taylor to the R.R. which had been left here for some time, & brought home a load of sand from Luther’s, & then brought another. Elon George & Jack called in course of the day.
Saturday, 2
Morning frosty, day fair, warm & pleasant. Finished the door cases & the base in the anteroom, went up to the Huddle & traded some at the store & agreed with Roby to turn a newel-post; & went down to the Corners & got Abe to prepare a rod to attach the rail to the chimney. Luman hauled a load of sand & afternoon with Harvey hauled rails over the creek. Mr. Pepper called.

Day principally fair with considerable heavy wind. Weather moderately warm. Remained about the house with wife during the day. The girls attended meeting at the Huddle & staid to the evening meeting. Harvey went after Mary on the mountain in Leroy, she having gone home with Francis on friday last.

Cloudy & windy with flurries of snow Weather colder. Put corner casings on the chimney, & commenced lathing the Ante room. Went up to the Huddle called at the store & at Roby’s for the Newell Post. Boys worked over the creek clearing off stumps. George Valentine, Jack, & Barnum called in the course of the day.

Day cold & windy, with clouds & sunshine alternately, & at night squalls of snow. Worked at lathing till towards night, & then went over to Drake’s, took tea there & came home with wife. The boys worked over the creek – Luman at breaking up on the hill, & Harvey at picking up & burning roots & stumps.

Day fair & not quite as windy & cold as yesterday. Worked part of the day at lathing & spent considerable time with company. Had calls by Elon, John Simpson, Oscar, Br. Champney, Roby, George & Edward, in the course of the day. Luman plowed over the creek in the forenoon, & in the afternoon he went to Troy to get some nails & some hair. Harvey went to the Steam mill to get some tobacco.

Weather more pleasant & fair, & some warmer than yesterday. Finished lathing the inside of the back Bedroom & the Anteroom, & commenced to make the fail for balustrade. Luman plowed on the south hill. Oscar came to make the mortar for plastering. Harvey assisted him. Elon & Jim Gee called in the evening.

Weather clear, cloudy, cool, with several flurries of snow in the course of the day. Worked a little at the railing, & spent some time at Abe’s shop to get some irons made to secure the rail & newell post. Luman worked at plowing on the south hill. Harvey, besides doing the chores, worked at filling the cellar drain.

Ground white with snow in the morning, day fair with but little wind, & the the weather not very warm. Finished the balustrade at the head of the stairs in the anteroom, & put down the floor in the garret over the front Bedroom. Luman worked at plowing on the south hill. Harvey attended to chores & worked some at filling the cellar drain. At night Byron Smith with Orr. Westgate called.

Heavy rain in the night, morning rainy, middle of the day fair, latter part, & evening rainy attended with lightning, & the weather much warmer. Made preparation & commenced putting on some siding to the west end of the main building. Luman went to Barna Turner’s & got a load of ties for him, to be hauled to the R.R. Valentine’s wife died this morning at 9 o’clock.

Luman went up to the R.R. with the load of ties for Turner, & hauled another load from the woods which he delivered there. Harvey repaired fence. Wife went up to Valentine’s. Day fair & very warm. Some clouds towards night. Dressed & put some more siding to the west end, & worked some at the raking cornice. Luman went with the girls to Alba to attend the funeral of Valentine’s wife. Harvey hauled a load of ties for Turner. Mr. Fleming called.

Rainy night, rainy morning, cloudy day, & cooler weather. Finished putting down the floor in the western portion of the garret in the forenoon & in the afternoon did not do much. – The boys gathered up some grass seed about the barn & took it over the creek & brought up a load of wood.

Morning frosty & foggy. Day fair & moderately cool. Made a door for the garret stairway, hung it & put on the latch in the forenoon. In the afternoon did but little except to wait on Oscar some(?) who came in the morning & put the first coat of plastering in the Sitting Room, stair way & three rooms in the west part of the chamber. Harvey tended & Luman broke up a piece over the flat for potatoes.

Morning fair & frosty, day pleasant & the weather some warmer than yesterday. Made & put in the bed moulding in the western rake & commenced making frames for the west end of the garret. Oscar worked at the plastering & finished the Ante Room & the front Bed Room. Harvey tended. Luman hauled a load of sand & dragged some on the north hill, preparing for oats.

Morning fair & balance of the day cloudy, & the weather cool. Finished & inserted the window frames in the west gable of the main building, put in the windows, & put on some siding. Oscar finished plastering rooms in chamber & walls of Sitting Room. Luman sowed the oats on the hill, & partly dragged them in.

Fore part of the day fair & pleasant, latter part cloudy, with rain towards night, continuing through the evening. Had Luman’s colt & Edward’s carriage & went with wife, by way of Leroy to Canton, to attend arbitration, leaving the woman to visit at Br. Rockwell’s. The trial concluding at night, went with wife to make a visit at Stockwell’s.

Rainy night & commenced again in the morning, continuing through the day. After breakfast we started from Mr. Stockwell’s for home, calling on the way at Br. Rockwell’s, at Mr. Cosper’s & at Luther’s. Found that Oscar had been in & finished plastering the Sitting Room in the forenoon.

Another rainy night, continued to rain till afternoon, then changed to snow which continued to fall till sometime in the night. High water in the streams. Did a little at painting. Primed the chimney piece & painted some in the chamber. Boys did nothing more than chores. C. N. Sayles called in the forenoon & George in the afternoon.

Morning opened clear, & the weather continued fair through the day. Not so cold as yesterday. Snow all disappeared in the course of the day. Spent the day at home with wife & part of the family, the girls only attending meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon. Amanda came over & spent sometime with us, & towards night Darias Ross & his wife came in.

Morning frosty, day fair, warm & very pleasant. Finished shingling the roof & trimmed the ridge of the main building. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of ties for Jenkins & in the afternoon the boys hauled stones off the meadow east of the house. Br. Wells returned from Leroy in the afternoon.

Some frost in the morning, weather fair & similar to yesterday. Put on a part of the ridge boards to the roof of the main building & afternoon went with Br. Wells over to Bunyan’s. The boys picked up & hauled off stones from the meadow, & hauled some manure onto the garden & ground in front of the house.

The weather continues fair warm & pleasant. Dressed out some stuff for window sash, & spent sometime in reading the papers. The boys hauled some more manure, plowed a part of the garden & the ground in front of the house, & sowed & dragged in some oats west of the barn. In the afternoon Mr. Pepper came after Lurenda to commence her school. Mr. Monroe called & paid me $1.00 balance for hay.

The weather continues remarkably pleasant & warm. Framed & put the sash together for the two front gables. The boys hauled & spread manure on the piece of ground east of the waggon house & hauled some hay to Roby. Towards night Robert Shedden called.

Fine, pleasant weather continues & is growing warmer. Finished the sash for the two front gables, fitted them on the windows & primed them. Sowed a little flax. The boys finished sowing oats, & Luman went over to Bunyan’s & got some Buckwheat & the flax seed. Valentine called. Paid David Sayles $3.00 on balance of township tax.

Warm pleasant weather continues. Commenced to make the doors for the closets for the Front Bedroom in the chamber. The boys went over the creek & resumed the clearing off & breaking up a piece of ground on the hill for corn. George called in the afternoon.

Very warm day. Forenoon fair & afternoon smoky & partially cloudy. Made some putty, set the glass in the two front gable windows, & fitted sash into the remaining front windows below. The boys dug & hauled earth from the northeast corner of the house onto the garden to grade it. Wife went up to Isaac’s to see Abby.

Worked at finishing & inserting window frame in the eastern part of the house. Luman planted corn for Jefferson. Rained through the night, cleared off in the morning, weather very warm, & thunder clouds in the afternoon. Finished putting in the window frames in the lower room of the main body of the house. The boys worked at hauling manure on to the potato ground on the flat. Had no visitors today.

Clouds & fog in the morning, balance of the day fair & warm. Made a frame for the gable in the forenoon, & then assisted wife to put down some carpet & move some beds in. Tinkered the old clock & moved it into the kitchen, & engaged in tinkering generally. The boys finished manuring the potato ground on the flat. Late Andrus called.

In the morning Harvey worked over a part of the garden with the cultivator, & Luman got a horse shoe set, & at night they washed the sheep.

Weather fair & warm. In the forenoon finished a windowframe & fitted in some sash. In the afternoon visited with Henry Brigham, who with his wife came to see us. Lurenda came with them. George & Amy, & the Doctor & Amanda also came, & Valentine was here. In the evening called with wife at George’s where Henry staid. The boys worked on the road.

Forenoon cloudy with a little rain, afternoon fair with light showers towards night. Weather cool. Went up to the Huddle in the forenoon & spent some time at the Tannery. Afternoon did nothing. The boys worked over the creek at the fence & put the cattle over there into pasture. George made a call in the afternoon, & towards night Leander & Fidelia Landon called.

Worked a little in the forenoon & shingled one side? of the roof of the northeast wing. Did nothing the latter part of the day being troubled with ???? Showers in the night, day partially cloudy & weather cooler. Did but little work, spent some time with Sam. Rockwell who called in the forenoon, & with George who came in the afternoon. Luman plowed a short time in the morning, but the ground being too wet he went to work with Harvey at the corn.

Day dull cloudy & cool. Afternoon rainy. Put up a scaffold & worked some at putting on the returns of the cornice of the northeast wing. Luman plowed some over the creek for buckwheat. Harvey worked at setting brush in the garden for the peas. David Sayles called in the forenoon & Valentine came towards night & took supper with us.

Luman hauled a load of Boards for Phillips from mill to R.R. & plowed a little. Harvey hoed the potatoes by the house. Bunyan called at night.

Weather continues fair & is a little warmer than yesterday. Remained at home through the day, some of the family attending meeting at the Huddle. The Doctor & Amanda came over & spent sometime with us. Valentine was also here. Harvey went home with the Dr. & had a tooth extracted.

Morning rainy, balance of the day fair & warm, & the evening showery. Started on foot in the morning for West Burlington met Mr. Parker on the way & paid him for shearing sheep, visited with Mr. Stevens till towards night, & then returned home. Luman finished plowing for Buckwheat, & commenced cultivating the corn. Harvey planted a few beans & repaired some bars.

Day fair till towards night, then a thunder shower & rain through the evening. Weather some warmer than for several days past. Worked a little at putting up the fence & putting in some studs to the north east wing. The boys finished plowing and cultivating the corn about the time the rain commenced. Weather fair & some warmer than it has been of late. No rain since yesterday morning. Remained at home with wife during the day except to go over the creek towards night to see the corn & the cattle. Found the corn to be larger than any I have seen. George called in the afternoon.

Weather fair & warm. Put a bail on a paint pot, finished siding N. E. gable, primed it & took down the scaffold, erected a scaffold across the east end of the house & went up to the Huddle & got some nails. The boys hoed corn & had Avery boy to drag the buckwheat ground over to prepare it for sowing. Valentine called in the afternoon.

Day fair & very warm. A little dash of rain from a thunder cloud in the middle of the day. Worked at dressing & putting on sidaing to the east end of the house. Luman sowed the Buckwheat in the forenoon & then hoed corn with Harvey. Avery boy drove the team to drag the Buckwheat.

Weather continues very warm. Forenoon fair & afternoon showery with considerable thunder & lightning. Worked at the east end, dressing & putting on the siding. The boys had the Avery boy to help them again to day. They finished dragging in the Buckwheat, plowed out the potatoes on the flat one way besides hoeing corn, & getting the horses shod.

Day fair & weather cool. Worked a part of the forenoon at the house, & went in the afternoon with wife over to Drake’s. The boys worked at the potatoes in the forenoon & spent the afternoon at play. Had a company of youngsters here in the afternoon, among whom was Loren Leonard & his wife. He put in a spring to one of the windows to Sitting Room for sample.

The weather continues pleasant & warm. Worked in the forenoon at putting in some lapped studs in the east part of the house & in the afternoon attended a barn raising at Levi Taylor’s. A little frost in the morning. Forenoon fair, afternoon cloudy with a little rain. Worked a little at the front porch. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Boards in the forenoon & in the afternoon commenced plowing the Hickory field for rye. Sam threshed oats & Harvey helped him some. Elon called in the morning.

Andrews called in the morning, & Fayette came at night with threshing machine.

Charles Ross and Fayette threshed the oats – about 200 Bu – The boys attended to that business today. Sara Rockwell called in the middle of the day, & Mrs. Champney & Sally here in afternoon.

Luman plowed on the hill & Sam put up the fence around the wheat. Harvey & Mary went with Harry’s folks after blackberries over to Leroy. In the evening Abe made a call.

No frost this morning. Day fair & the afternoon quite warm. Continued my work at the front porch. Luman spent the forenoon about the Corners. In the afternoon he commenced cradling the buckwheat over the creek – Sam plowed on the hill. Harvey in the afternoon, gathered apples from trees by the road opposite the barn. George called in the afternoon.

Morning cloudy & rained some before noon. Afternoon fair & warm. Worked a little at the porch & went down to the sawmill & got 2 pieces of sideding. Sam finished plowing & Harvey dragged in the afternoon. Luman cut buckwheat in the forenoon & with Sam cut? corn in the afternoon. Two Mr. Smiley’s & ladies came up with Lurenda & made a visit.

Rained through the night & continued through a considerable portion of the day, producing a freshet. Weather mild. Worked a little at the front door. The boys carried in a part of the straw which had been placed under the shed & Luman went up to Philander’s & bought of him a pair of 2 year old colts. He spread flax in the afternoon & Sam went up to R.R. with load of boards.

Rain storm continues & also the warm weather. This day is the fifty eighth anniversary of my birth. Made the panels & put together the front door. Luman & Sam finished spreading the flax, repaired the line fences on the flat & killed a sheep for mutton. Harvey went with the team to drag for his uncle Julius again.

Rainy night & rainy morning. Partially clear in the middle of the day & towards night it rained again. Dressed the mouldings & finished the door. Forenoon cloudy & very cold. Afternoon more fair & moderate. Returned from Bunyan’s in the morning after breakfast. Found Basset here who helped me prepare some paint. After he left Br. Wells came, & in the evening the Doctor and Amanda with Viletta, also came. The boys besides attending to other matters, worked some at digging stumps. Oscar called & settled account.

Principal part of the day cloudy & cool. Towards night a storm of rain & sleet commenced from the south. Worked a little at painting the Sitting Room. Luman went in the forenoon to carry Br. Wells to the depot, who has departed to reside in Rhode Island. In the afternoon he went over to Fowler’s & got a load of ties to haul to the R.R. Harvey worked some at stumps. Valentine called.

Day fair & considerably warmer than yesterday. Finished painting the Sitting Room. Erastus called in the morning & paid me eighty eight cents. In the course of the forenoon Mr. Redington called, to whom I paid $10. on land debt. Luman two loads of ties for Fowler to the R.R. taking one of them from his place. Harvey did the chores & sorted potatoes in the cellar.

Principal part of the day fair & quite moderate weather for the time of year. Remained about the house through the day, the girls attended meeting at the Huddle. In the afternoon the Doctor & Amanda & also Jeff. & Jane with Ed. were here. Lurenda who came home yesterday, returned to her school, & Eliza went away to commence hers on Vroman Hill.

Weather fair the principal part of the day, & continues moderate. Finished the cornice of cellar way & put on a part of the shingles. Returned a letter to Br. Wells Luman hauled one load of ties for Fowler to the R.R. & two from his place. Towards night went with wife to Drake’s, took tea & spent the evening there.

Morning frosty, day fair, & weather moderate. Christopher Lowe having come to dig some underdrains in the field above the house lot; went with him & staked out some drains & worked some at burning stumps. Luman went to the R.R. with load of ties, & plowed in the afternoon. The Doctor called & got his barrel. Mrs. Taylor called & stayed with us.

Day remarkably fair & pleasant & the weather quite mild & warm. Worked in the forenoon at the cellar way & in the afternoon went with wife & others to help Drake husk corn in his barn. Luman got the horses shod in the forenoon & plowed over the creek in the afternoon. Harvey worked some at sorting potatoes in the cellar.

Rained in the night, morning fair, balance of the day cloudy with some rain in the afternoon. Did but little work today. Luman plowed over the creek. Harvey did chores & sorted potatoes in the cellar. Mr. Lowe worked at digging underdrain. The Doctor brought Mrs. Taylor here with her goods, she intending to reside here. Valentine called at night.

Another rainy night succeeded by a rainy day. Weather warm, grew colder towards night & snowed a little in the evening. Wrote letters to Mr. Atkins & Daniel Bush – The boys attended to some matters about the barn & went over the creek & brought home the plow, & plowed a furrow on each side of the field above the house for open drains. David Sayles called.

Froze hard during the night & the day cold & blustering. Went to the P.O. with letters & a book for Dan. in the morning, & then worked some at fitting up the shoe shop for Mrs. Taylor’s use. Boys worked at repairing the barns, & hauled up some hay to Cornelius Sayles, who called for that purpose

Night stormy, ground covered with sleet in the morning, four inches deep. Day cloudy, with some rain & the weather much more more moderate. Did not go out today but remained about the house. Had no company today except Silas Bunyan who was here with Luman.
Monday, 5
Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather mild. Thaw continues & the snow or sleet is wasting away. Continued & nearly completed the repair or alteration of the shoeshop in the south room chamber. Luman hauled edgings for Percival from Barnes’ mill. Amanda came in the afternoon & the Doctor at night. They spent the evening with us.

Cloudy & rainy through the day. Continues to thaw & the ground bare again. Put beads around the side lights & worked at puttying & painting the west Hall. The boys filed crosscut saw & went over the creek & sawed out a cut, from the big pine in order to try it for long shingles.

Rain continued until the middle of the day & then, the weather being colder changed to snow. Finished painting the Hall, & white washed Mrs. Taylor’s room. The boys did but little excepting chores. Mr. Taylor, the school teacher called & put up with us. In the evening Drake called a short time.
Thursday, 8
The snow storm continued through the forepart of the past night. Day fair & extremely cold. Made a platform & set up the stove in Mrs. Taylor’s room. Sent to the store & got a cord & put up her bedstead. Moved & arranged the things in the chamber. Luman went down to the Steam Mill & agreed with Mr. Phillips to haul some time this winter & brought home a load.

Weather fair & more moderate towards night. Worked at putting up partitions in the south chamber. The boys worked part of the day at sawing shingle timber over the creek. Lurenda returned rom Franklin having concluded her second term of school there. Eliza also cam home at night from her school.

Day partially cloudy & quite cold. Worked a little at the same business as yesterday. The boys worked part of the day at sawing shingle timber over the creek. Valentine was here at dinner. The Doctor & Amanda came in the afternoon & brought Mrs. Taylor. Young Mr. Spencer was here at supper.

Day cloudy, wind south with a little snow falling in the forenoon, & the weather more moderate. Remained about the house during the day. Luman & the girls attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon, & remained in the evening, except Eliza who returned & at night went back to her school. Ed. made a call. Mrs. Taylor went back to Drake’s.

Snowed a little in the course of the night. Day cold, cloudy, & blustering. Worked a very little at the partitions in the south chamber. The boys hauled some shingle botts to the barn, & a drag of wood to the house, & did a little at sawing over the creek. Ad. came & made preparations for making the shingles & shaved a few. Valentine called.

The weather clear & cloudy, & considerable cold. Put a lock on the granary door in the orning & then with wife, Lurenda & Mrs. Taylor, went with the Doctor & Amanda to visit Mary and her family. The boys worked some at the shingle business & Luman got the horses shod & went to Steam Mill to haul out ties.

Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather decidedly cold. Evening more moderate. Went down to Mott’s & got a key made to a lock, spent sometime with Eliza & Robert, & the balance of the day in reading the Tribune. Very little appetite to eat, & am not very well. Luman hauled up a load of ties for Phillips to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill.

Day cloudy & a very little snow fell. Weather a little more moderate. Remaining unwell, did no work worth mentioning. Luman hauled two loads of Ties to the R.R. for Phillips, taking one of them from the mill. Harvey employed at doing chores & other matters about the farm. Mr. Griffin called in evening & Valentine staid over night.

Very cold morning, pleasant day, cloudy evening, & weather moderate. Worked some at partitions in south chamber, & wrote a letter to Alfred Bailey in the evening. The boys, having Ad. Bailey to assist, butchered the hogs after hauling a drag of wood in the morning. The Misses Roberts called & staid overnight, & George & Amy were here in the evening.

Cloudy with south wind & weather mild. In the afternoon a storm of sleet commenced which continued in the evening. Did several little jobs of tinkering about the house & spent some time with company. The boys hauled wood in the forenoon, & in the afternoon Luman hauled up home a load of Ties for Phillips & Harvey cut up the pork. Mr. Pepper & Emily called in the afternoon & staid to tea.

Storm continued through the night. Day cloudy, weather mild & thaw progressing. Remained about the house through the day. Valentine called in the morning, & Ed. in the afternoon. Towards night, Harvey went with a sleigh & carried Lurenda to Franklin in order to commence her winter term of school there.

Cloudy weather continues & a little mor cold. Took off & trimed the backdoor of the west Hall, & worked some at the partitions in the south chamber. Luman hauled to the R.R. a load of Ties for Phillips & brought home another from the mill. Harvey worked some in the cellar & choring. Calvin called a short time in the afternoon.

Weather cloudy & moderate, with snow falling the principal part of the time. continued my work in the south chamber. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. taking one of the from the mill. Harvey employed as usual about the house & barn. Mr. Andrews the teacher, called on us again tonight. The Doctor & Amanda called a short time in the evening.

Principal part of the day cloudy & the weather continues moderate. Sleighing very good. Continued my work in the south chamber. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Phillips from the woods, taking one of them through to the R.R. Harvey worked some in the cellar, filled up the outside cellarway with straw, & did the chores.

Fore part of the day fair, latter part cloudy. Weather considerably colder. Being unwell, did no work of consequence today. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Mr. Phillips to the R.R. taking the last one of them from the woods. Harvey went to Troy to get a coat cut out. He rode with Dr. Drake.

Principal part of the day fair but the weather cold & freezing. Worked in the cellar making preparations & commenced to make an apartment for keeping potatoes. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Phillips from the woods taking one of them to the Rail Road. Harvey assisted some in the cellar. Eliza came home.

Fair with clouds at intervals & flurries of snow. Weather quite cold. Worked in the cellar, same as yesterday. Harvey commenced moving the potatoes. Luman hauled two loads of Ties for Phillips to the R.R. taking one of them from the woods. Went towards night with wife over to Drake’s & staid a little while in the evening. Received a letter from Dan.

Day fair, weather very cold in the morning & a little more moderate at night. Kept about the house during the day, wife went to meeting at the Huddle. In the afternoon the Doctor Amanda & children came over & returned at night. Valentine came in, Silas was here & several other young people.

Luman got eh horses shod & hauled from the woods a load of Ties for Phillips. Harvey did chores & assisted Addison some who worked here part of the day making shingles. Valentine called in the afternoon.

Day partiall fair, & the weather decidedly colder, freezing through the day. Worked at the potato room in the cellar & moving the potatoes into it. Luman hauled load Ties for Phillips to R.R. & load Boards to R.R. from mill for Fleming. Erastus with drake’s team hauled another. Harvey did chores & brought some tan from tannery.

Day fair & the weather continues extremely cold. Set up the stove in the south cellar & worked some at the potato room. Luman hauled a load of Ties for Phillips from near the mill to the R.R. Harvey did chores & repaired the yard fences at the barn. The Doctor & Amanda with Erastus called in the forenoon.

Principal part of the day cloudy, the weather cold & towards night a snow storm commenced. Went with wife in the sleigh with the Doctor & Amanda to make a visit at Stephen Landon’s. Called at Br. Champney’s & Luther’s & they went along with us. Returned at night. the boys worked at sawing shingle stuff over the creek. Valentine here at night.

a spell in the forenoon at the potato room in the cellar. Mr & Mrs.
Bunyan, with George Burke and his wife, called a little before noon, and
after remaining a short time, we went with them over to the Doctor’s for
our New Year’s visit, returning at night. Luman spent the day about the
neighborhood with Silas Bunyan. Harvey went in the afternoon with the team
to the Steam Mill & hauled up a load of Ties for Mr. Phillips.
