L. Putnam’s Memorandum

Jan. 1st 1857

Thursday, Jan. 1

A light fall of snow continuing till afternoon. Weather moderate thawed some towards night. Worked at the frame preparing & putting in some joists. Alva Bailey & took supper with us. Harvey, with Mary & several others went with sleigh down to his uncle Samuels? for new years visit.

Friday, Jan. 2

A little more snow, which fell moderately – at intervals through the day. Finished putting in the joists over the kitchen & buttery, & trimmed a stairway. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. In the evening went up to Taylor’s store & bought a of overshoes.

Saturday, Jan. 3

Weather cold & stormy. Went to Monroe Luman took me sown to Mercurville & then I had a chance to ride with another man. Met my colleagues, appraised the damages of Judge Tracy, Rec. $3. for m services, & in the evening walked up to Sam’s & put up. Luman took home a load of boards.

Sunday, Jan. 4

Weather cold with a very moderate fall of snow a considerable portion of the time. Took breakfast & remained at Samuel’s until the middle of the day & then proceeded home. Found Lurenda with a very lame arm. At night Harvey received a wound on his head by a kick of the horse.

Monday, Jan. 5

Wintry weather, & forepart of the day somewhat stormy. Walked up to Luther’s & from thence rode with him to Alba, to meet with others – the viewers of the proposed new township. Returned & took supper with him & then walked home. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R.

Tuesday, Jan. 6

Weather very cold, but more pleasant. Went up to see Levi Taylor in the morning, & worked some about the house in the afternoon. Luman hauled two loads of boards from the mill & one to the R.R. In the evening posted accounts for Griffin. George called a little while.

Wednesday, Jan 7

Forenoon cold & fair, afternoon high wind & squally. In the morning went to the Corners & to the sawmill to see about some lumber. Called a short time to see mother. Worked some at scoring some timber at the house & partly hewed a beam. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. & another from the mill.

Thursday, Jan. 8

Weather very cold but fair. Towards night, more moderate. Finished hewing the beam, laid it out, & chopped some stove wood. Eliza who came up last night with Miss Tidd & with others, went to Troy – returned this morning to her school. Luman hauled load of boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill.

Friday, Jan. 9

Fair day & not so cold as yesterday. Worked some at framing a beam & wrote a letter enclosing a dollar to Mr. Judd of N.Y. for the "American Agriculturist" & some seed of Chinese Sugar Cane. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill & two to the R.R.

Saturday, Jan. 10

Weather quite moderate. Snowed some in the course of the day. Went with wife to the Steam Mill in the morning & traded some at the store. Partly scored & hewed an oak sill in the afternoon. Paid Elvira $1.50 for a sheep. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R.

Sunday, Jan. 11

Weather cooler with considerable wind & squalls of snow. Attended meeting at the Huddle & heard Br. McDougall. After meeting Darias Ross with his wife & some other ladies called & took tea with us. In the evening the family all attended meeting leaving me to take care of the house.

Monday, Jan. 12

Weather fair & moderately cold. Finished scoring & hewing sill & layed out & framed it. Made some preparation for butchering hog tomorrow. Luman hauled two loads boards from the mill & one to the R.R. In the evening Lurenda & the boys attended meeting.

Tuesday, Jan. 13

Weather continues fair & quite moderate. Scored & hewed a pine beam 20 feet long, layed it out & commenced the framing. In the evening cut up the hog. Luman hauled a load boards to the R.R., helped Mr. Pratt butcher the hog, & brought up a load from the mill. Evening he attended meeting.

Wednesday, Jan. 14

Moderate winter weather. Some flurries of snow, in the course of the day. Finished framing the beam I had begun. In the evening attended meeting & heard Brother McDougall. Luman hauled 2 loads of boards to the R.R. & one from the mill. Delight Elliot returned, having been absent since Sundy night. Elliott sent me $3.00

Thursday, Jan. 15

Weather extremely cold & blustering. Went wife to Troy. Rode with John Putnam who went with Drake’s team. Returned at night. Wife stopped at the Huddle & attended meeting. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. & a drag of wood to the house.

Friday, Jan. 16

Weather continues cold but not so blustering. Attended the township election at the Huddle & served as clerk of the board. Wrote a remonstrance against taking part of our twp to make new one. Luman hauled a load of boards from mill to R.R.

Saturday, Jan. 17

Cold weather continues without abatement. Elon & Geo. called in the morning. Worked a little while over the creek, scoring & hewing. Went to the new P.O. at the Corners. Rec. Jan. no of Am Agriculturist. Luman hauled a load of boards. Br. McDougall, Wm. Roberts & some young ladies called. Attended meeting eve. Letter from Caleb –

Sunday, Jan. 18

Weather severely cold & cloudy. Mr. Roberts, two sisters & Miss Pratt staid with us. Remained at home on account of indisposition. Visitors & family attended meeting at the Huddle. In the evening they attended again, with the exception of wife, who remained with me.

Monday, Jan. 19

A very stormy blustering day, which commenced some time in the night – snow drifting badly. Continue unwell, & remain in the house. Mr. Roberts carried Lurenda & Eliza away to their schools, in the morning, in his cutter. He departed in the afternoon George & Elon called in the course of the day.

Tuesday, Jan. 20

Weather fair & moderate. Snowed a little towards night. Went over the creek & finished scoring & hewing a stick of timber begun on saturday. In the afternoon moved some corn in the chamber. Luman hauled some wood & the timber & brought up a load of boards from the mill. At night Valentine came & tarried over night

Wednesday, Jan. 21

Moderately cold, considerable wind & flurries of snow. Having a very bad cold did not go out, but worked some in the house. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R., & brought up another from the mill. Valentine left in the morning.

Thursday, Jan. 22

Weather clear & cloudy – windy & squally – & the latter part of the day severely cold. Counter hewed & layed out a long girt, & spent some time on the flat, to find some water for the cattle. Luman hauled two loads of boards to the R.R. & brought one from the mill. In the evening George called.

Friday, Jan. 23

Day fair, windy, & extremely cold. Worked a little at framing girt, & spent some time watering cattle & went to the Huddle & to the Corners to see about the Tribune. Loren Leonard called with a remonstrance against tavern license. Luman hauled load boards from mill to R.R. – Alanson called in the afternoon. Erastus also.

Saturday, Jan. 24

Day fair & very cold. finished framing girt. Went to P.O. & got my papers & Chinese sugar Cane seed in the envelope I sent to New York for that purpose. Luman hauled two loads boards from the mill & one to the R.R. Eliza came home & Valentine called & took supper.

Sunday, Jan. 25

Weather fair & a little more moderate. Remained at home during the day – the girls only attending the meeting at the Huddle. Valentine came in, in the forenoon. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon & took tea with us, & George called a little while just at night.

Monday, Jan. 26

Weather fair & continues extremely cold. Worked a little at the frames – layed out & framed a short girt. Spent some time with Elon who called in the afternoon. Luman hauled two loads of oards to the R.R. from home – one which he brot from the mill on saturday, & the other brot on the waggon the 3rd inst.

Tuesday, Jan. 27

Weather much more moderate with a slight fall of rain & sleet. Went over the creek to find some timber for hewing. Took off some siding from the east room in order to put in new timber. Luman hauled two loads boards from mill & on to the R.R.

Wednesday, Jan. 28

Moderate winter weather. Cloudy & in the middle of the day it thawed a little. Worked at the east part of the old frame, preparing it for connecting timbers. Troubled with a pain in my head in consequence of a bad tooth. Luman hauled two loads boards to R.R. & one from the mill.

Thursday, Jan 29

Weather quite mild – thawed some in the middle of the day & cleared off towards night. Put the long girt in front of the house & worked some at the old frame. Made a rabbit trap for Harvey & helped him set it. Luman hauled one load boards from the mill to the R.R. In the evening Col. Wilson & Mr. Pierce called a little while.

Friday, Jan. 30

Moderate weather continues, & pleasant Continue unwell but keep about. Layed out & framed a long post & a short girt. Br. Rockwell called a short time in the afternoon. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. At night Eliza returned from her school. Geo. & Amy called.

Saturday, Jan. 31

Snow storm commenced in the night & continued through the day. Framed some short timbers in the house. Boys did nothing but chores. Rec’d letter from Mr. Young on Caleb’s business. Wrote to him in reply. In the evening the girls & Luman attended temperance lecture. Br. Wells returned with them & tarried.

Sunday, Feb. 1

Weather fair & somewhat colder than it has been for several preceeding days. Br. Hyatt being in attendence at LeRoy the girls attended meeting there. Luman went over ther in the evening & my letter to mail there. The pain in my head prevented my attendence. Br. Wells remained with me till towards night.

Monday, Feb. 2

Forenoon cloudy – afternoon clear – weather moderate. Framed some & made Harvey another trap. Luther called a short time in the afternoon. Luman hauled two loads of boards from the mill & one to the R.R. – Went over the creek towards night to help Harvey set his traps.

Tuesday, Feb. 3

Weather pleasant & not very cold. In the forenoon worked at the house – framing some studs. In the afternoon, went over the creek & worked some at scoring & hewing timber. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. & brought another from the mill. In the evening he went to LeRoy to meeting. Amy called in the evening.

Wednesday, Feb. 4

Weather much more moderate. Cloudy & towards night rained a little. Worked in the forenoon, with Harvey, over the creek at scoring & hewing timber; & cutting & piling stove wood. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. & brought up one from the mill. At night he went ove the creek with the team, & hauled up a stick of timber.

Thursday, Feb. 5

Warm & fair & thawed rapidly through the day. Put in some short sills & counter hewed & laid out a long beam for the east end of the house. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. & then he hauled a stick of timber & some wood from over the creek.

Friday, Feb. 6

Forenoon fair & warm – afternoon cloudy & thaw continues – Finished a letter to E. A. Wilcox in the morning & worked some at the frame. In the afternoon, went with wife to visit at Mary’s where we met Luther & Sally. In the evening wrote a letter to Mr. Atkins. Boys attended to matters about the house & barn.

Saturday, Feb. 7

Weather continues warm with south wind & a little sprinkling of rain. Mailed my letters in the morning & went down to the steam mill with Luman. Made out & left a bill for some timber & then walked home. Worked some at framing in the afternoon. Luman hauled load of boards from mill to R.R. on waggon.

Sunday, Feb. 8

south wind & warm weather continues. Very muddy & latter part of the day rainy with sprinkling of snow at night. Wife quite unwell with cold. Called to see Geo. a little while who is considerably unwell with a turn of phthisic?. No meeting held at the Huddle today.

Monday, Feb. 9

Weather colder. Froze pretty hard last night. Pleasant & latter part of the day some warmer. Worked at framing long beam. Luman hauled two loads of scantling home from the steam mill sawed for me according to bill. At night Mr. Bunyan called & spent the evening with me.

Tuesday, Feb. 10

Morning fair succeeded by a violent snow squall & balance of day very windy & cold. Finished framing the beam & did some other work. Elisha Bailey brought two sticks of timber for long plates, for which I gave him an order of Phillips for $3.85 out of store. Luman hauled a load of boards for Barnes to the R.R. & brought up another from his mill.

Wednesday, Feb. 11

Fore part of the day fair & very cold – latter part more mild. Worked at framing some studs & a short plate for a lean-to on the north side of the house. Elon called & spent some time. Luman hauled the load of boards for Barnes to the R.R. & brought up a load from the steam mill.

Thursday, Feb. 12

Forenoon pleasant & not very cold – afternoon cloudy with south wind. Worked at framing as usual. Framed some studs, two short posts, & finishing other timbers that had been left. Luman hauled one load of boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill.

Friday, Feb. 13

South wind & flurry of snow in the morning then came off pleasant & warm & thawed considerably. With the assistance of Harvey, raised the eastern portion of the first story of the house & worked some at framing. Wrote a letter to Mrs. Anna Skinner. Calvin made a short call & at night Samuel called, but was called away after going to bed. Luman hauled load to R.R. & one from mill.

Saturday, Feb. 14

Weather fair & quite warm for the time of year. Framed & put in some joists. Had letter mailed & in the afternoon red one from Mr. Young. Luman hauled load of boards to the R.R. but on account of the getting so soft he did not go after another load. He & girls went to LeRoy to meeting.

Sunday, Feb. 15

Weather warm, & during the principal part of the day fair & pleasant; but on account of the thaw the ground is getting quite muddy. Being lame with rheumatism remained at home during the day. Lurenda remained last night at LeRoy & attended meeting there again today. Called a little while at Br. Brigham’s this eve.

Monday, Feb. 16

Weather continues warm. Forepart of the day fair – latter part cloudy, with a little sprinkling of rain. Worked at framing several small timbers for the house. Luman went in the morning with the team & took Eliza to her school, & then took his mother & aunt Eliza to the Huddle; after which he went with a grist to Rockwell’s mill.

Tuesday, Feb. 17

South wind continues & weather fair & warm. Worked at framing as usual. Boys worked in the forenoon at moving the stack of straw into the barn & shed, & in the afternoon they went over the creek & chopped some wood. Geo. called in the eve.

Wednesday, Feb. 18

Continues warm – no frost for several preceeding days. A sprinkling of rain in the afternoon. Worked at framing timbers for the front projections. Boys worked over the creek at chopping stove wood & doing chores. In the afternoon they took the waggon up to Sayles’ to be repaired. Griffin had Pop to ride to Sugar Creek.

Thursday, Feb. 19

A little cooler. Afternoon cloudy with a slight fall of sleet & rain. Tore off the covering & put on the timbers to the eastern front projection. Luman went over to Rockwell’s mill & brought home the grist. Newell Phinney called & towards night Valentine came. Worked a spell in the evening at posting for Griffin.

Friday, Feb 20

Ground covered with sleet in the morning – cloudy with more rain & sleet in the course of the day. Scored & hewed a beam & layed it out. Boys hauled some wood. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon. Valentine came in at night, & Alanson spent the evening with me.

Saturday, Feb. 21

Weather more cool, & continued cloudy & stormy through the day. Worked at framing beam till afternoon, & then went down to the P.O. & got my mail matter. Boys in the forenoon, attended to matters about the house & barn, & went to school in the afternoon. Brother Wells called & remained with us over night. Ed. called in the evening.

Sunday, Feb. 22

Weather more pleasant & not so cool. Family all attended meeting at the Huddle excepting Harvey & myself. In the afternoon Jack came in; Loun? Leonard & Edward Saxton called a short time, & towards night George & Lathan Andrews came in & spent an hour or two.

Monday, Feb. 23

Froze some last night – day warm & pleasant. Finished the beam, & framed another short one. Luman went with Eliza to her school in the morning, & had some work done to the waggon by the blacksmith at the steam mill. In the afternoon he hauled some hemlock logs to Bailey’s mill.

Tuesday, Feb. 24

No frost this morning & day very pleasant & warm. Worked part of the time at framing, & at removing the roof & some of the old timbers from the eastern part of the house. The boys hauled logs from the other side of the creek to Bailey’s mill. In the evening George called.

Wednesday, Feb. 25

Weather continues warm & pleasant. Worked at the frame – put in the lower front studs. Attended the settlement between Griffin & Darius B. Ross. Luther called. Towards night Stephen Tidd called to get some hauling done to Towanda. The boys engaged hauling hemlock logs to Baley’s mill.

Thursday, Feb. 26

Frozen some this morning. Weather colder. Put some timbers over the sitting room. Framed some joists. Samuel called in the afternoon. Boys hauled logs in the forenoon, & in the afternoon Luman got the horse shod & went to steam mill to put on load & go wit it to Samuel’s to night.

Friday, Feb. 27

Forenoon cloudy – afternoon fair & weather mild. Framed some joistss and studs & refulated the foundation at the east end of the house. Went to the Corners & engaged Ad. to do some sawing. Luman went to Towanda with his load & returned about dark. Eliza came home having finished her school.

Saturday. Feb. 28

In the morning ground covered with a light snow, & day somewhat squally. At night the ground bare. Counterhewed & layed out the front long plate. Boys hauled some logs to the mill in the forenoon & in the afternoon Luman went up to the Huddle got a stake put into the waggon & the irons mended.

March

Sunday, March 1

Weather pleasant but rather chilly. Attended meeting at the Huddle & heard Br. Hyatt who at the close, immersed six persons. There were eleven including four of those received into the church. For the evening family attended meeting again, I remaining at home.

Monday, March 2

Weather very cold & blustering with the ground covered with a light snow. Worked in the woods, over the creek, with the boys, getting out timber until sometime afternoon, & then worked a little while at framing on a plate, – the boys attending to the chores.

Tuesday, March 3

Weather much more moderate & quite fair & pleasant. Went over the creek in the forenoon with the bos & got out some more timber. In the afternoon worked some at framing & in the evening attended a meeting at the Huddle concerning the meeting house. Boys hauled timber in the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 4

Weather cool & part of the day cloudy. Rode to Troy with Alanson & carried a pail of butter which I sold to Drake. Rec. $4. of Long on note. Returned at night. Boys, between them, hauled a load of boards from the Steam mill to the R.R.

Thursday, March 5

Cloudy with snow falling moderately a considerable portion of the day. Weather mild. Worked at framing in the forenoon, & in the afternoon attended the funeral of Aunt Martha Taylor. Br. McDougal spoke. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to R.R. Family attended meeting in the evening.

Friday, March 6

Weather not very cold, but stormy & squally through the day. Finished the framing of one of the long plates, & commenced counter hewing the other. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. Harvey, besides attending to the chores, commenced digging for the foundation of the woodhouse.

Saturday, March 7

Weather quite cold with considerable wind. Day fair. Finished the counter hewing, laid out, & commenced framing the other main plate. Br. Wells called about noon & staid with us over night. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. Rec. letter from Dan.

Sunday, March 8

Weather quite pleasant & not so cold as yesterday. Attended meeting at the Huddle with all the family except Harvey. Br. McDougal discoursed. Returning, found Valentine had called wh remained until after supper. In the evening family all attended meeting except myself. Miss Pratt returned with girls.

Monday, March 9

Southerly wind – cold & stormy through the day. Worked, part of the time at framing plate. Posted Griffin’s acct with Jim Gee; he – Jim – having called for that purpose. Luman hauled a load of boards from the mill to the R.R. & towards night he hauled up a drag of wood.

Tuesday, March 10

Weather fair & more moderate. Worked at framing – finished the plates & framed some studs. Erastus called & had Griffin’s acct with him & his father posted. Luman hauled a load of boards from mill to R.R. Rec. Tribune of the inst. – first no. of new club. Griffin called & spent the evening.

Wednesday, March 11

Forepart of the day cloudy – latter part fair & weather becoming more mild. Framed some studs & braces & did some other work about the frame. Wrote a line to Heman, & sent it to the summit. Paid Ed some money I had borrowed of him. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R.

Thursday, March 12

A light covering of snow on the ground this morning. Day fair with cold wind. Laid out two of the upper beams & spent some time removing the old timbers from the eastern part of the house. In the evening, posted books for Griffin. Luman hauled two loads of boards from the mill & on to the R.R. – Alanson called in the evening.

Friday, March 13

Weather mild & very pleasant. Worked at putting the lower studs in the east end of the house. Dr. Drake & Amanda with Sally & Mary came for a visit. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. & another from the mill. The Dr. & Amanda tarried with us.

Saturday, March 14

Weather warm & pleasant. Went with wife & Drake & Amanda to visit at Bunyan’s. Spent the day there, returned at night & Br. Wells came with us, who with the Doctor & Amanda tarried with us over night. Luman hauled a load of boards to the R.R. from home & brought up another from the mill.

Sunday, March 15

Weather continues fair & warm. Drake & Amanda started for home in the middle of the day. Br. Wells went with them to Troy. They also took along Delight Elliot who has concluded her term of boarding with us. Luman went to LeRoy to meeting in the evening.

Monday, March 16

Warm & cloudy, with a very little rain. Worked with Harvey getting the long Plates on to the building, removing part of old roof & putting in some more Joists. Luman hauled load of Boards to the R.R. & in the afternoon brought up a load of timber from the mill for ourselves.

Tuesday, March 17

Weather pleasant & quite mild. Worked at the house as usual. Framed & put up two of the front upper posts, & also the short Plates for the eastern projection. In the evening posted Griffin’s account with Horace Heroit? Lucien White called to engage me some sash. Luman hauled load of boards from mill to R.R.

Wednesday, March 18

Forepart of the day cloudy – latter part fair. Framed a plate for front porch & a beam for Western projection & put them in their in their places. Luman hauled a load of Boards from the mill to the R.R. Samuel called & took supper with us. Alanson came in & spent the evening with us.

Thursday, March 19

Rained through the night & continued thro the forenoon, with snow in the afternoon & colder. Did but little to the house today. Luman hauled a load of Boards from the mill only. Sylvester Taylor called to have survey bill posted. Fayette Churchill & Laythan Andrews called for advice. Geo. called in the evening.

Friday, March 20

Morning cool with high wind – Afternoon fair & mild. Went to the Corners & the sawmill to see about having some sawing done. In the afternoon framed some & put on the front, main Plate. Luman hauled the load of Boards brought up yesterday, to the R.R. Did not go afer another load, the road being very muddy.

Saturday, March 21

Weather continues mild – cloudy in the forenoon & fair in the afternoon. Framed some upper Posts, & some studs & braces. Wife went up to Mary’s. Boys worked at levelling the stones in the old cellar excavation, & commenced filling it by plowing & scraping. At night Br. Wells called & also Samuel, & both staid over.

Sunday, March 22

Weather continues fair & fine. Went with Br. Wells to the Huddle, attended meeting there & heard him deliver an excellent discourse on the subject of regeneration. Family also attended the meeting except Harvey – left at home & Eliza, who is at Troy. George called towards night.

Monday, March 23

Morning cool & cloudy with a little shower of hail or sleet, & high winds. Latter part of the day fair & pleasant. In the morning went down to the Sawmill. Worked some at framing, & putting tools in order. Boys worked at splitting some rails on the south hill. In the evening Alanson called & spent some time.

Tuesday, March 24

Warm & cloudy with a little rain in the morning. Raised the other long plate & the eastern upper Beams. Finished framing the two middle upper Beams & in the evening posted Griffin’s account with Nathan Whiting. Boys worked at plowing & scraping to fill the excavation in front of the house. George & Ed. came in a little while at night, & B. Hubbell called & staid over.

Principal part of the day fair & warmer than yesterday. Finished the Plates & upper Beams together & commenced framing the upper Joists. Heman left in the morning to attend to some business at the Huddle & then to return to Union. Luman hauled load of Boards to the R.R. & in the afternoon helped put the timber together and hauled up a load of scantling from Bailey’s mill.

Morning warm & pleasant – afternoon cloudy & cooler. Framed & put in twenty two of the Joists & worked some at laying foundation wall for Woodhouse. boys hauled stones in the forenoon, & in the afternoon hauled another load of scantling from Bailey’s mill & Luman brought up a load of Boards from Steam mill. Br. Rockwell called.

Weather rather squally. Being unwell did not do much. Laid a few stones, & spent some time at the Corners. Luman hauled load of Boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill. Valentine came round again & called. Paid Harry Bailey $6.15 for sawing hemlock logs by order on steam mill.

Weather clear & cloudy and of medium temperature. On account of various circumstances, did not attend meeting. Read "Life among the Mormons" which Valentine brought with him. Eliza came home from Troy & Lurenda went up there to stay some time. Lucella came down to stay with us.

Weather quite pleasant and mild. Worked at the house – framed & put in a few of the upper Joists, commenced framing the Rafters, & worked some at the underpinning for the Wood House. Luman hauled a load of Boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill, & got 220 lbs. of horse feed there.

A very stormy day – rain in the forenoon & snow in the afternoon without cessation until night. Worked a little at framing, & spent a short time, with the boys, livelling the buildings on the north side. George made a call in the afternoon.

Weather fair but not very warm. Snow considerably reduced & roads quite muddy. Spent considerable part of the day at the sawmill. Framed a post for the Wood house. Luman went with Eliza to her uncle Isaac’s & then hauled some logs on to log way at the mill.

Morning cloudy, residue of day clear & mild. Snow disappeard. Worked at framing Beam & Girts for Wood House. Br. Rockwell called in the afternoon. Luman split a few rails in the forenoon, & in the afternoon went with Harvey & got a load of straw at Luther’s.

Mild, cloudy, day. Framed a Post & raised part of the Wood House alone. Boys hauled a ton of hay, bought of Elias Smith & went up to Luther’s & got another load of straw. Heman having come last evening, went away this morning after breakfast.

Framed & put in a tier of Joists over west part of the kitchen, & trimmed the main stairway. Luman hauled a load boards to R.R. & hauled two loads boards home from Bailey’s mill. Day fair & pleasant – evening rainy. Framed a Beam & four Girts & with the help of the boys finished raising the body of the Wood House. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Boards & Harvey repaired fence below the barn. They did some plowing & scraping in front of house. Silly brought a calf. Amanda came.

Morning opened clear, soon succeeded by squalls, which continued through the day. Framed & put Plates on the Wood House. Luman went up to the mill, carried some flour down to his uncle Samuel’s & brought up a load of Boards. George & Amy called & spent the evening.

Weather quite cool, & frequent squalls in the course of the day. Worked at splicing & putting on a Plate & Rafters over the back part of the Kitchen. Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Boards & hauled home another from the mill. Calvin called to see me a short time.

Weather fair but continues quite cool. Framed & put the Rafters on to the Wood House & worked some at the stone work. Luman took load of Boards to the R.R. & left Pop with Luther & took his colt to use a spell. Boys worked in the afternoon at grading the lawn.

Day fair & considerable warmer. Put Rafters on the east projection, put up barn doors, & worked some at underpinning Woodhouse. Boys worked a grading lawn. Lurenda came home from Troy. Isaac called. Valentine came & tarried over night.

Morning cloudy with southerly wind, but not very cold. Before noon a storm of rain, hail, & snow, commenced; which continued simultaneously & alternately through the day. Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon & heard Br. Champney. In the afternoon Br. McDougall preached, but on account of the storm I did not attend.

Snow in the morning six inches deep & continued to fall through the day – increasing to eighteen inches at night. Did nothing but help Harvey take care of the stock. Luman went with sleigh to Luther’s & brought home a little hay. Valentine spent some time here. Br. Reynolds Sr. called int eh afternoon, & Geo. came in the eve.

Snow this full two feet deep. Continued cloudy through the day with a little rain & rapid thaw. Could not work on account of the snow. Assisted in taking care of the stock. Valentine, being weather bound, called & staid with us over night. He presented me with ten pounds of tobacco.

Cleared off & froze some last night, day fair & snow melted considerably. Did something towards making scaffolds on the back side of the house & worked some at the stone work. Boys commenced digging an addition to the cellar. Samuel & Elon called in the afternoon, & towards night Mr. Bunyan came in.

Commenced raining in the course of the night, & continued through the day. Weather mild & streams high. Went with Harvey to Brigham’s & ground some tools, placed some more boards over the back part of the frame for temporary shelter for the work bench, & assisted the boys some in digging in the cellar.

Day fair & pleasant. Employed at boarding & shingling the roof on the backside of the kitchen & woodhouse. Turned the the young cattle over the creek & the cows in the fields north. Boys repaired fence over the creek in the forenoon, & in the afternoon they hauled manure, east of the house.

Shower in the night, day fair & warmest of the season. Worked as yesterday at boarding & shingling. Frosty morning & pleasant day. Made a frame & hung the grind stone in the forenoon & in the afternoon worked at putting tools in order. Luman finished dragging the oats & corn ground over the creek, & brought up a load of Boards from the Steam mill. Harvey finished sowing plaster in the west field over the creek.

Rained through the night. – rained in the morning – continued through the day, alternating with snow, which here in the valley dissolved as fast as it fell. The streams much swollen. In consequence of the storm, wet ground & wet lumber, had to suspend all business.

Fair & considerably warmer. Put in studs & rough boarded north side of dining room. Boys worked over the creek making brush? & pole fence on the line west of the clover field. Towards night Luther and Sally called a short time. He brought Pop home.

Day pleasant, but towards night some cooler. In the morning went up to the Huddle & left a couple of hand saws with Roby, to be put in order. Worked some at the buttery. Boys employed as yesterday hauling manure on to the flat.

Pleasant weather continues. Light shower in the afternoon. Went up to Roby in the morning & got my hand saws, & then worked at the buttery. At night went over in Drake’s wood to find the young cattle. Boys finished manuring & plowed about an acre of ground on the flat.

Another fair day. Worked part of the day at the Buttery. Have a very bad cold. Luman hauled a load Boards to R.R. & another from the mill. Mr. Sage & Harvey finished hoing corn before noon, & had the residue of the day to themselves. Then went down to the steam mill.

Forenoon cloudy, afternoon & evening rainy. Hung the door & put some shelves in the Buttery. In the forenoon Mr. Sage & Harvey hoed in the garden & Luman went up to the R.R. with load of Boards. Charles Taylor called & notified me to attend a Bridge view in West Burlington.

Very rainy night, rainy morning, & rainy day. Towards night rain abated. Rode to Andrew Swain’s in West Burlington to attend a Bridge view. The other viewers not being present, adjourned to the 13th inst. Returning; called & took tea with Mr. Stevens. The great amount of rain has caused a corresponding flood.

Principal part of the day cloudy with some rain. Cooler at night. Worked some at the cornice & roof of the back stoop. Mr. Sage & Harvey worked at digging in the cellar. Luman went over to John Bush’s to get some tools I had lent him.

Day fair & pleasant, without any indications of rain. Worked at rough boarding the north leanto. In the afternoon went down to the Corners & got my papers at the P.O. & also a letter frrom Mr. Atkins. Called & took tea with Mother, wife being there. Mr. Sage & the boys holding Independence.

Weather continues fair. No rain to day. Attended meeting at the Huddle which was carried on by Brs. Brigham & Reynolds. After meeting went over the creek & gave the young cattle some salt. Br. Brigham called in the afternoon.

Forenoon fair, some thunder with a little rain in the afternoon. Put some rough boards on the east end of the house, & worked some at the cornice. Mr. Sage sowed the buckwheat on the hill, Luman worked at dragging & Harvey sowed plaster on part of the field east of the buckwheat ground. Valentine came in the evening & tarried –

Day fair with showers, at night. Worked a lower backside cornice, making return & rake. Luman finished dragging the buckwheat in the forenoon & hauled plank for Hiram Reynolds in the afternoon. Mr. Sage & Harvey cultivated & hoed the piece of corn above the road, & commenced below. Did some writing for Hiram Reynolds & Mr. Hafflett.

Day fair & pleasant. Finished the lower cornice & roof on the back side & commenced rough boarding above. Luman hauled plank for Hiram Reynolds. Mr Sage and Harvey finished hoeing the corn & potatoes below the road, & put up some fence on the hill. Heman called & took dinner with us.

Thursday, July 9

Day fair & warm. Did some rough boarding on the back side of the house & put on the raking cornice over the buttery. Luman hauled up a load of boards from the mill in the forenoon & plowed for Brigham in the afternoon. Mr. Sage & Harvey cultivated & hoed the corn over the creek.

Weather continues warm & pleasant. Commenced getting out stuff for the upper backside cornice. Luman hauled a load of Boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill. Mr. Sage & Harvey repaired some fence over the creek & hoed some potatoes & beans on the flat. Bunyan called.

Saturday, July 11

Warm & fair. Worked as yesterday at dressing stuff for cornice. Luman hauled load of Boards from home & another that had been left on the road to the R.R. & brought up one from the mill. Mr. Sage & Harvey repaired the fences below the road & hoed in garden.

Weather fair, ground getting to be quite dry. Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon which was conducted by Brs. Reynolds & Brigham. Attended again in the afternoon & heard Br. Hyatt, who filled the appointment of Br. McDougall.

Weather warm & dry. Some thunder towards night but no rain. Went to West Burlington to attend the Bridge view. Wife went with me & visited at Mr. Stevens’s. Mrs. Sage & the boys repaired the brush fence over the creek, & commenced mowing north of the house.

Fair, warm, weather continues – Worked at putting on cornice & some boards on the roof – Mr. Sage & the boys with team worked on the road below the Corners. Alanson called towards night & spent the evening with me.

Continues warm & dry. Worked at planking the front of the house. Went to the sawmill & got 300 feet of boards of Ed. Luman hauled load Boards to the R.R. & brought back some goods for Taylor. Hauled in three loads hay & then Harvey went with team & brought up load of Boards from mill. Mr. Sage worked at haying & in the garden.

Weather fair & exceedingly warm & dry. Considerable thunder in the afternoon but a few drops of rain, only, fell here. Attended meeting at the Huddle which was conducted by Brs. Ross & Reynolds. Wife spent the day with her mother, who is considerably out of health.

Warm with light showers in afternoon. Worked at putting in lap studs & rough boarding the east projection. Luman hauled load Boards to R.R., hauled home 300 feet from Bailey’s mill and brought up another load from Steam Mill. Mr. Sage & Harvey worked at cultivating & hoeing corn over the creek the third time.

Day fair & warm. Made scaffolds put in the east gable studs & put on some rough boards. Marlin Holcomb came, went with him to the Steam Mill & bought some lumber, nails &c. Luman at Luther’s. Fair & getting very dry. Finished floor. Elon called in the forenoon. George made a call & after him Chester Thomas called. Mr. Sage & Luman finished mowing & put up some hay. Harvey hauled load of Boards from the mill to the R.R. – At night went up to see Calvin, calling to see Robert & Levi Crofut on the way.

Continues fair & dry. Put up some shelves & moved my writing table to the back kitchen. Helped the boys fix a place to stack some hay. Mr. Sage & the boys hauled five loads of hay & finished the business. Harvey hauled load of Boards from the mill.

Weather warm & dry. Moved my books & papers, & put down the chamber floor in the back kitchen. Mr. Sage went down to the steam mill & did not work today. Luman cut the buckwheat on the flat, & began to dig a drain back of the house. Harvey hauled two loads Boards to the R.R. & one from the mill. Mr. Parker called.

Weather continues warm & dry. Finished the chamber floor of back kitchen & spent some time visiting with Russel Spalding, who, with his wife called in the forenoon & took dinner with us. Afternoon went to the Huddle & attended the primary election. Mr. Sage did not work. Luman dug a little. Harvey hauled load Boards from mill to R.R.

Rained some before day light, & weather cooler. Day fair. Meeting being at Canton, could not conveniently attend, & remained at home. Girls went up yesterday on the cars, & Luman went up today to bring them home, & returned about midnight.

Monday, Sept. 7

Weather cool & fair. Slight frost this morning. Worked at finishing inside of back kitchen. Mr. Sage dug a little in the morning, & then with Luman raked the buckwheat on the flat. In the afternoon they repaired fence by the creek. Harvey hauled load of Boards from the mill to the R.R.

Weather continues clear & pleasant. A little more frost this morning. Business same as yesterday. Mr. Sage worked some at repairing fence by the creek, & some at digging underdrain by the house. Luman being unwell did not work. Harvey hauled load of Boards from the mill to the R.R.

Weather fair & warm. Put up some shelves in the back kitchen. Spent some time with Hicks Mace who called to look at my cattle. Mr. Sage dug on the drains. Luman continues unwell. Harvey hauled two loads of Boards from the mill and one to the R.R.

Weather continues fair & warm. Worked at laying stones in underdrain, & Mr. Sage at digging. Luman continues unwell & gets no better. Harvey hauled the load of Boards to the R.R. & brought up another from the mill. Capt. Tillotson called & took supper with us. He sold the woman some washing preparation.

Day fair & warm with thunder & indication of showers in the evening. Finished stoning the underdrain & fixed the conductor in the forenoon & spent the afternoon with Mr. Bunyan, who came to see me. Mr. Sage worked at filling drain. Luman remains unwell. Harvey hauled the load of Boards to R.R. & another from mill. Alanson & George called.

Warm & dry. finished underpinning & floor of back kitchen. Mr. Sage mowed some briars & pulled some beans. Luman some better but not able to work. Harvey hauled load of Boards R.R., attended picknic & hauled another load from the mill. Valentine called at night.

Weather continues fair & warm & drouth very severe. Cattle suffer for want of feed & water. Did not attend meeting, but remained at home to see that cattle did not break into crops. They are getting quite troublesome. Called at Elon’s towards night. He gave me $4. brought from Towanda for me.

Monday, Sept. 14

Weather fair & very warm. Finished chimney in the forenoon & spent residue of day with Clark Wilcox who called to see us. Went with him to the Corners & to LeRoy, & at night took him to the depot to depart. Mr. Sage cut up corn. Harvey hauled load of Boards to R.R. & brought up another. He went to Samuel’s to call him to see Luman. He came & staid over night.

Fair but not quite so warm. Worked at cupboard. Samuel went away in the forenoon, Luman remaining about the same. Mr. Sage attended to chores & cut up corn. Harvey hauled load of Boards to the R.R. & with Mr. Sage hauled in the buckwheat from the flat. He then brought up another load from mill.

Wednesday, Sept. 16

Fair, warm, & very dry. A sprinkling of rain at night. Worked at cupboard. Went with Harvey towards night to the sash factory & got 180 lights of sash & a few boards at the steam mill, he having been to the R.R. with load, & broke the waggon. Mr. Sage worked at the corn. Luman appears to be a little better today.

Thursday, Sept. 17

Rained in the night & through the morning & shower in the afternoon. Evening rainy. Finished cupboard & commenced a sink. Mr. Sage threshed the buckwheat that was hauled from the flat. Harvey gathered some apples & tinkered the old cradle. Luman not much better. Mr. Sage’s grandson came to see him.

Weather fair & cool. Finished the sink. & spent some time with Hiram Stevens who called on us. Luman appears to be some better. Mr. Sage & all the family except wife & myself attended the "Good Templars" picnic at the Huddle.

Saturday, Sept. 19

Cool N. E. Rain, commenced early & continued through the day. Being unwell with disordered stomach, did not do any work. Luman appears to be gaining slowly. Mr. Sage & Harvey did but little except chores & attending to matters about the house & barn. Br. McDougall a short time in the afternoon.

Weather cool & partially cloudy, but did not rain. Health being no better did not attend meeting, but remained in the house. Luman continues to mend gradually. Samuel called in the afternoon & remained over night. In the evening George & Amy came in.

Weather fair & pleasant. Feeling a little better walked up to see Luman Taylor at his store, & Hiram Reynolds at his tannery. Mr. Sage & Harvey cut down the corn over the creek, & at night went up to Taylor’s store & got each of them a pair of boots.

Tuesday, Sept. 22

Weather warm. Forenoon cloudy & the afternoon rainy. 56th anniversary of my birth. Being quite unwell, remained indoors. Mr. Sage bound & put up corn by the house, in the forenoon & Harvey commenced cradling the buckwheat on the hill, Luman not being able to work, on account of his lame side.

Wednesday, Sept. 23

Rained through the night, but cleared off, & day fair & warm. Continued unwell, but feeling a little better, went up to the Huddle in the afternoon & bought me a pair of boots of Taylor’s store, & also some other articles. Mr. Sage & Harvey worked at the buckwheat on the hill. Elon called.

Thursday, Sept. 24

Weather continues fair & pleasant. Being some better of my illness, repaired & cased a window in the back kitchen. Mr. Sage & Harvey finished cutting & raking the buckwheat in the forenoon, & in the afternoon hauled the corn from fields above & below the road.

Friday, Sept. 25

Very pleasant weather. My health continues to improve. Went to the Huddle to see about getting waggon repaired & traded some at store. Went down to Mott’s to get skins? repaired, & finished the other window in back kitchen. Luman went to LeRoy to mill. Mr. Sage & Harvey worked at binding & putting up corn over creek.

Saturday, Sept. 26

Weather continues pleasant & warm. Went with wife in the morning to the steam mill & traded some, then went to the Huddle to see about getting tire set, & returned with Julius who called. Had a call from Col. Wilson also. At night went to P.O. & rec. a letter from Mr. Atkins. Mr. Sage & Harvey finished putting up the corn & repaired some fence. Luman went to Luther’s.

Sunday, Sept. 27

Fair & quite warm. Attended meeting at the Huddle & heard a discourse by Levi Landow. In the afternoon went with wife to see mother & to read to her Mr. Atkins’ letter. In the evening Alanson called as also in the morning.

Monday, Sept. 28

Showers in the forenoon, & gales of wind in the afternoon. Put some boards on front part of roof & moved the bench. Took down the old stone chimney & began the kitchen floor. Mr. Sage husked corn. Harvey got the waggon home & hauled some wood. Barna Turner called & agreed to give me $4. for reserved timber on cold spring lot.

Tuesday, Sept. 29

Weather fair & tolerably warm. Went up to the Huddle in the morning with Luman & brought home a churn & some glass from the store. Worked at kitchen floor. Luman hauled buckwheat off the hill & Mr. Sage & Harvey threshed. Dr. Drake’s family moved down from Troy on to their farm. Commenced letter to Atkins.

Wednesday, Sept. 30

Forenoon fair, shower in the middle of the day. Continued to work at the floor. Luman hauled buckwheat till the shower, Mr. Sage & Harvey threshing. In the afternoon they dug the potatoes, below the road. & hauled them to the house. Wrote in the evening.

Thursday, Oct. 1

South wind & cloudy, with a little rain. Weather quite cool. Worked at the floor. Mr. Sage & the boys buried the potatoes dug and brought a few that grew on the flat, & in the afternoon husked corn. Towards night Heman came & staid over. In the evening finished Mr. Atkins’ letter.

Friday, Oct. 2

Rained through the night & continued through the day moderately. Worked at the floor, Heman helping in the forenoon. Mr. Sage & Harvey finished husking the corn that is hauled. Heman left in the afternoon & took my letter to mail at Canton. Have a calf sick with the murrain.

Saturday, Oct. 3

Weather lowry. Finished the kitchen floor. Mr. Sage closed his work & settled. Gave him due bill for $23.27. Boys skinned the calf & Luman carried the skin to Troy & sold ??? Carrioekaw? for $1.20 – Mr. Bunyan called in the afternoon & staid till after tea.

Weather continues cloudy & quite moderate. Cleared off at night – Having worked pretty hard the two past days & feeling quite exhausted & sore I did not attend meeting, but remained in the house till towards night & then walked across the fields & called a few minutes to see the doctor.

Monday, Oct. 5

Cloudy through the day & clear again at night. Frost in the morning. Put down some floor in woodhouse chamber & made window frame for kitchen. Luman went to Troy with the girls & the doctor. Brought home a load for him. Harvey worked at shovelling away the earth, thrown out of cellar. In the evening posted books for Griffin.

Weather moderate & partially cloudy. Put window in the kitchen & took off part of old roof over the old kitchen. Posted accounts for Griffin in the evening. Samuel called in the afternoon. Boys worked about the house shovelling & carrying away shavings, & hauled two loads corn to the house.

Weather fair & pleasant. Put another window & a door into the kitchen & commenced dressing boards & putting up the wall next of the woodhouse. The boys threshed some buckwheat remaining on the floor, & hauled in, & threshed another load which was the last. Br. Hubbell came & tarried.

Thursday, Oct. 8

Weather fair & quite warm. at the same business as yesterday. In the evening posted accounts for Griffin. The boys cleaned up the buckwheat & stacked the straw in the forenoon, & in the afternoon they commenced hauling the corn from over the creek. Br. Hubble left in the morning.

Frost in the morning. Day fair & warm. Finished west wall of kitchen & commenced partition. Boys hauled corn from over the creek. Towards night Valentine came with William May, to make article of agreement for sale of a piece of land to May.

Morning foggy – day fair & warm. Employed at making partition between kitchen & meal room. At night went up to the Huddle & bought of Taylor some pork barrels for packing meat. Weather continues pleasant but some cooler. Attended meeting at the Huddle which was conducted by Brs. Ross & Brigham. Dr. Drake & Amanda called in the afternoon. Went with wife & took tea with them, calling a short time to see mother on our return from there.

Part of the day cloudy & weather quite warm. Worked at dressing & putting up the ceiling to the kitchen. The boys hauled wood from over the creek & Luman went up to the Huddle & brought home three barrels that I bought of Taylor.

Weather fair till towards night then cloudy & evening rainy. Continues warm. Worked some at ceiling, & attended election a short time in the afternoon. Luman being unwell with the summer complaint did not work to day. Harvey, besides doing chores, chopped stove wood at the door & put into the wood house.

Rained through the night & some in the morning. Cloudy through the day. Worked at fitting & hanging & casing a door from the kitchen into the meal room. The boys worked at husking corn in the barn. In the evening Amanda & the children came over & staid over night. Alanson called in the morning.

Rained some in the night, morning lowry, commenced raining again & continued through the day. Went with Luman to the Steam mill & got a load of boards for my own use. Having got wet, & on account of the rain, did not work.

Friday, Oct. 16

Wet weather continues. Considerable rain fell during the latter part of the day & evening from the N. E. – Worked at framing & putting in some timbers to trim the stair way to the kitchen chamber. The boys employed at husking corn corn in the barn. Wife spent considerable portion of the day with mother, who is sick.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Cleared off, & weather some cooler. Worked at various points about the house, & among the rest removed the old roof from over the former kitchens. Luman went to LeRoy to mill with 10 bu. buckwheat. Harvey worked around the house. Lurenda returned from Troy. Wife spent afternoon & night with mother.

Day pleasant but weather cool, Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon & in the afternoon went with wife to see mother who continues very sick. Wife remained with her again through the night. Eliza arrived this morning from Troy.

Monday, Oct. 19

Part of the day cloudy with rain at night. Went early in the morning to see mother. Found her very low. She died soon after. Attended to arrangements for the funeral. Boys husked corn in the forenoon & with Ad. butchered a beef in the afternoon. Mrs. Wilson called in the middle of the day & Valentine tarried with us over night.

Found a little snow this morning. Day cold, blustering, & squally. Wind very high. Put up part of partition west side of kitche stair way & placed boards in different parts, to keep out some of the storms. Boys husked in the forenoon & Luman went to LeRoy in the afternoon to bring home the grist.

Partially cloudy with a little snow flying in the morning. Continues quite cold. Attended the funeral of Mother Bailey at the meeting house. Br. McDougall officiated. After the funeral, Luman went to Troy and carried the beef hide to Cariochau? to be credited on my account.

Weather quite pleasant & not so cold. Rec. a letter from Eli Holcomb requesting my attendance at LeRoy today. Accordingly I walked over there, took dinner with Marlin, & agreed with Harvey for 2000 brick. Found Br. Wells there, who returned with me. Boys husked some corn & attended to some other matters.

Weather cloudy – threatning storm. Put up the partition on the other side of the kitchen stairway, & spent some time with Br. Wells, who having staid with Robert last night, came in, in the morning & spent the day with us, & staid over night. The boys worked at the barn husking corn.

Weather more pleasant & quite moderate. Prepared & hung the cellar door. Towards night went to the P.O. & got my papers & a letter sent from N. Y. to C. J. Parker. Boys employed at husking corn in the barn. Br. Wells remained with us.

Rainy night, & rainy day, attended attended with boisterous wind from the north. Worked at putting up boards to keep out the storm, & preparing chamber for storing corn. Boys worked some husking in the barn, & attended to the chores. George called & paid me for some sash & glass he had.

Another rainy, windy, night, & the day about the same. Storm abated towards night. Worked some about the house at various points. The boys finished husking corn & put the stalks up on to the scaffold in the barn.

Weather cloudy through the day & quite moderate. Snowed some in the evening. Employed at temporary work. Fixed the buttery, & put in a window & commenced enlargement of bedroom. Boys chopped stovewood at the door & piled it in the wood house.

Weather continues cloudy but not very cold. Rained again in the evening. Continued to work at the bedroom – finished partition, put in the door, cased the window &c. The boys finished chopping the wood at the house & hauled two loads of corn from the barn & put it in the chamber.

Day tolerably fair & weather moderately warm. Finished the bed room & towards night went with Luman to buy some pigs of Noah Clark, but did not find him at home. Boys hauled up two loads more of corn & put into the chamber which is the last.

Part of the day cloudy, but pleasant & warm. Worked some at sorting corn, at piling wood, & put in partition studs between kitchen & dining room. The boys went in the morning & go a couple of pigs of Noah Clark at $2. a piece. They then hauled wood the balance of the day.

Morning frosty. Weather continues pleasant & quite moderate for the season of the year. Attended meeting at the Huddle, in the forenoon, which was conducted by Brs. Ross & Brigham. Br. McDougall’s appointment being in the evening I did not attend.

Pleasant weather continues – Worked at framing & putting in sleepers to trim a place for fireplace in sitting room. Boys hauled some rails & repaired some fence on the hill, hauled a load of wood & Luman commenced plowing the cherry field.

Tuesday, Nov . 3

Weather tolerably fair, except it being a little squally towards the middle of the day. Finished trimming the chimney place & made preparation for commencing the chamber stairs from the sitting room, & piled some wood in the wood house. Luman plowed, & Harvey chopped stove wood at the house.

Weather cloudy, but continues moderately warm. Commenced the stairs leading into the kitchen chamber, piled some stove wood & sorted some corn in the chamber. Luman plowed a little but having taken cold is again quite unwell. Harvey chopped stove wood.

Another heavy shower in the night & & streams continue very high. Day fair & not so warm. Worked a little at casing door way at foot of chamber stairs & various other matters. At night went up to the store & got some coffee & tobacco. Boys worked at excavating back of house & filling below the woodhouse.

Morning frosty, day clear & pleasant. Finished casing, & hung the chamber door; & took down the old ceiling & joists in the front room.-- Luther made a short call & took dinner with us. Morning clear & frosty, but principal part of the day cloudy & cool. Filed hand saw ground some tools & commenced framing a surmuer? to be put in the west leanto. The boys employed as before at excavating north of the house, & hauling to fill below the woodhouse. Mr. Sage went away after breakfast, to visit in the neighborhood.

Weather clear, cloudy, & cool with a little rain. Finished framing he surmuer? & put it in, with the joists over the front room. Worked some at levelling the earth deposited below the wood house, for a wood yard. The boys worked at digging & hauling the same as for several days preceeding.

A little snow on the ground in the morning & several flurries in the course of the day – Framed & put in studs & rough boarded the front of the west projection or wing. The boys hauled wood from over the creek. Mr. Sage returned & remained with us through the night.

Severe frost, day fair & pleasant, but weather quite cool. Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon, which was conducted b Brs. Brigham & Reynolds. In the afternoon, went with wife over to Drake’s & spent some time there. Mr. Sage remains with us.

Cloudy & a very little snow fell in the morning, latter part of the day & evening rainy. Luman went with waggon to carry Luther as far as Monroe, on his way to attend the Special Court as Juror. Went with wife in company with them as far as Franklin & visited at Samuel’s. Called at Steam mill & brought home 500 feet of boards.

Tuesday, Nov. 17

Weather cloudy, & rainy some part of the day. Set up stove in the weaving chamber, put some boards on the roof, & sorted & put up some corn for C. U. Sayles. Luman commenced plowing over the creek. Harvey pulled some turnips & carrots in the garden.

Forenoon cloudy & cool, with a little rain & snow. Afternoon more moderate with a little sunshine. Framed & put studs into front of the east wing & did some underpinning there. Luman went to Towanda to carry Mr. Sage on his way home, who has been detained here with rheumatism.

Forenoon pleasant & warm. Afternoon, rain terminating in snow & continuing through the evening. Worked at rough boarding the east projection. Luman returned this morning. He went up to Taylor’s & brought aunt Prudence here to visit; & then went up to Luther’s to take the buggy home. Harvey worked in the forenoon at digging ditch north of house.

Ground white with snow, & cold, wintry weather. Finished rough boarding the west wing & worked some at the meal room. The boys finished digging the ditch back of the house. Elon called & took aunt Prudy home with him in a cutter. Called a short time on George. He called in the eve.

Very cold freezing night, day cloudy & continues very cold. Spent sometime arranging matters about the barn yard & sorted some corn in the chamber – The boys removed the old back?, but the ground being frozen so hard they could not dig. Luther came down to bring Lurenda home. Rec. letter from Dan.

Forenoon cloudy with flakes of snow falling. Afternoon fair & weather much more moderate. The snow melted off except in the shade.-- Feeling rather stupid, did not attend meeting today, but spent my time in the house. Wife & girls attended meeting at the Huddle. George called. Rainy day, producing high water again. Weather moderate & frost coming out of the ground. Could not do much on account of the rain. Boys threshed a few beans and attended to matters at the barn. The girls attended the funeral of Mr. White at the meeting house.

Partially clear & weather very cold & freezing. Worked some with Harvey removing a bank of earth that had been thrown out of the cellar & commenced getting out the cornice for the east wing. Luman helped Brigham butcher his hogs. In the evening George made a call.

Weather fair but continues very cold. Worked at getting out stuff for the cornice of the east wing. Luman got the horses shod, & with Harvey chopped stove wood at the house. Weather continues fair but remains very cold. Employed part of the time dressing stuff for cornice. Boys worked at hauling wood. Samuel came & spent some time. Brother Wells remains with us. Elon called in the morning to hire Eliza to teach.

Day quite fair & pleasant, & weather much more mild. Thawed a little. Continued to work at cornice. Boys worked in the morning at repairing the water woks, & then chopped stove wood over the creek. Br. Wells departed. Called at Brigham’s in evening.

Freezing night, & day fair & very pleasant. Weather warm in the middle of the day. Finished getting out stuff for the cornice of the east wing, & commenced putting it on. The boys worked over the creek, chopping wood for the stoves. Valentine called a short time in the course of the day.

Rained through the night, morning foggy, warm & fair; succeeded by clouds & showers in the middle of the day. Boarded the roof of the east wing & commenced putting on the raking course. Bos cut up the pork, & commenced digging a drain to the cellar through the garden. Amanda came in the evening.

Wednesday, Dec. 2

Morning frosty, forenoon fair & warmer, & afternoon cloudy. Finished the cornice of the east wing & removed the old cellar wall next to the new excavation. The boys employed as yesterday, digging a new drain to the cellar.

Thursday, Dec. 3

Day partially cloudy & weather mild. Worked in the forenoon at making & putting on the conductors for the junction of the roof to the main body. In the afternoon visited with Esq. Smiley & Samuel, with their wives & others who came for that purpose. In the evening we visited at Brigham’s. Boys worked at digging.

Friday, Dec. 4

Ground covered with a light snow in the morning. Day clear & cool. Put some rough boards on the front, & commenced shingling the wing. Sold 3 steers to Monroe Smith for $48. in 60 days. Boys hauled some stones & worked some at digging. Amanda Shepard came in the afternoon & staid overnight. Jeff. & his cousin called in the evening.

Another light snow in the morning. Day partially cloudy, & some warmer. Worked some at stoning & filling cellar drain. Wife unwell. Luman went with waggon to carry his Aunt Amanda to Philander’s & with Harvey dug some in the south cellar, & scraped away the earth with horse?.

Weather cloudy with a drizling rain through the day & the evening. Wife continues unwell but much better than yesterday. Remained at home through the day. Towards night Amanda called, & soon after the doctor came in.

Morning fair, & day very pleasant & warm. Went to Troy with Luman. Had Drake’s waggon & took him along. Carried two firkins of butter & sold to Long for 17 cts. per lb. Pd. note given to Shepard, & $7. to Paine. Bought Luman pr of Pants, & cloth for myself.

Tuesday, Dec. 8

Morning clear, balance of the day cloudy & warm. Finished shingling the east wing. Luman went in the forenoon down to Fleming & Cleaveland’s mill & got 4000 shingles. In the afternoon the boys hauled some stones for the underpinning to the N.E. corner of the house.

Wednesday, Dec. 9

Rain commenced falling in the night & continued, moderately through the day. Weather quite warm. Worked some at laying the underpinning around the N.E. corner of the house. Boys worked at digging the south cellar. Samuel called twice in the course of the day. Amanda spent the afternoon with us.

Thursday, Dec. 10

Rainy night, day partially cloudy, & weather some cooler. High wind in the evening. Finished the underpinning around the N.E. corner, put in some sleepers & commenced putting down a temporary floor in that part of the house. The boys overhauled the potatoes that had been buried, buried them anew.

Friday, Dec. 11

Forepart of the day squally, latter part fair. Completed the temporary floor, moved the bench & tools into the east part of the house, carried off the shavings, made a new draft for cornice, & set up the old clock in the back kitchen. Boys dug some in the new cellar & scraped away the earth.

Saturday, Dec. 12

Froze hard during he night, day fair & pleasant, & some warmer. Worked at laying wall on the west side of the addition to the old cellar commencing also the wall on the north side of the new cellar. Boys hauled wood in the forenoon & in the afternoon Luman brought home 4000 shingles from Flemings.

Sunday, Dec. 13

Freezing night & fair day. The weather very pleasant & moderately warm in the middle of the day. – Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon. Discourse by brother Champney. In the evening remained at home alone – the family all going to hear brother McDougall.

Weather continues fair & is getting quite warm. Worked at laying cellar wall, the same as on saturday. The boys worked at digging & scraping out a part of the new cellar outside, & south of the house which is designed to be moved a little.

Tuesday, Dec. 15

Cloudy in the morning, soon cleared off, & the day fair, pleasant & quite warm. Continue the business of laying the cellar wall. Cleared some of the rubbish out of the cellar. The boys finished excavating that part of the new cellar outside of the house & hauled three loads of stone.

Wednesday, Dec. 16

Froze a little during the night – Weather continues fair & warm. Went with Luman to the steam mill and got a few boards in the forenoon & worked some at the cellar wall in the afternoon. The boys hauled some more stones in the afternoon for the cellar.

Weather continues fair & warm. Continued to work at the cellar wall. Luman commenced hauling lumber for Cleaveland & Fleming. He brought up a load of boards, & threshed some oats. Harvey dug some in the cellar. Samuel called & staid overnight.

Heavy rain during the night & rained some in the course of the day. Continues warm & is very muddy – Worked at the wall of the new cellar. The boys worked at excavating and scraping away the earth, & chopped some wood for the stove. In the evening, Amy & Sister Hurlburt called.

Weather fair but cooler than for several days past. Flurry of snow in the evening succeeded by rain. Worked at cellar wall, & in the evening commenced writing to Mr. Atkins. Luman hauled a load of boards for C. & F. from their mill to the R.R. Harvey attended to chores, & dug some in the cellar. George called in the evening.

Tuesday, Dec 22

Rained considerable in the course of the night, & lowry & cool through the day. Continued to work some at the cellar wall, & finished letter to Atkins in the evening. Luman got horses shod & threshed a few oats. Harvey dug a little and chored some. In the evening Alanson called, & soon after Valentine & Volney Taylor, came in.

Wednesday, Dec. 23

Day fair & cool. Worked at cellar wall & posted some accounts for Griffin. Sent letter for Atkins to P.O. at Summit. Luman hauled a load of boards for C. & F. from their mill to the R.R. Harvey did chored & dug some in the cellar. In the evening George called, & Bunyan also.

Thursday, Dec. 24

Partially cloudy, brisk N. W. wind, but the weather continues mild. Continued to work at laying cellar wall. Luman hauled a load of boards for C. & F. from their mill to the R.R. Harvey attended to chores & dug some in the cellar. Alanson & Amanda called & spent the evening; & Br. Wells came & staid with us over night.

Friday, Dec. 25

Day fair & cloudy in the evening. Weather considerably cooler, with indications of snow. Worked at the cellar wall. Luman hauled a load of boards for C. & F. from their mill to R.R. Harvey worked at digging & choring. Br. Wells Remained with us through the day. Alanson spent the evening with me. Wrote letter to Alfred Bailey.

Saturday, Dec. 26

Commenced snowing towards morning & continued, moderately, till towards night. Worked some at the cellar wall. Luman hauled a load of boards for C. & F. from the mill, up home. Harvey dug some besides doing chores. Mailed letter to Alfred Bailey in the morning. Br. Wells remains with us.

Sunday, Dec. 27

Weather cold, with flakes of snow falling during the principal portion of the day. Br. Wells, after breakfast, started on his way to LeRoy, where he is engaged in a school. Attended meeting at the Huddle in the forenoon, which was addressed by Br. Champney. Did not attend in the evening.

Monday, Dec. 28

Weather cloudy principal part of the day, & much warmer than yesterday. Worked some at the cellar wall. Luman hauled load of boards for C. & F. to the R.R. in the morning, & brought up another load at night from the mill. Harvey employed at chores & chopping wood at the house.

Tuesday, Dec. 29

Snow began to fall in the morning & continued till towards night & then changed to rain. Made some preparations for raising the south part of the house. Luman hauled load of boards to R.R. & afternoon carried some grain to mill. Went to Taylor’s to get some vest trimmings?, & Wrote a letter to Desation?

Wednesday, Dec. 30

Thawed through the night, day cloudy, evening rain, & weather quite mild. Continued to make preparations for raising & moving the old house, & piled some wood in the wood house. The boys got the mare shod, & chopped some stove wood over the creek, in the forenoon & in the afternoon, they hauled up four loads to the house.

Thursday, Dec. 31

Snowed some, rained some, & continued to thaw until afternoon; when the clouds broke away, & the weather became some colder. Worked in the forenoon at ripping up the old buttery, in order to detach that part of the house from the south building, which is to be raised to the level of the other part of the house & to be moved three feet to the south. In the afternoon went over the creek to help the boys get some timber for pries for that purpose. Piled stove wood in the wood house in the morning. Boys hauled wood in the forenoon. At night, sent my letter for Dan. to the P.O. & a Catalogue of Teachers Institute.
