Note:
I feel that there should be some disclaimer attached to these
transcriptions due to the extreme difficulty in deciphering the Census
takers' scribbling, poor spelling, deterioration of the notebooks and
all the other problems. I have used question marks on items that I've
guessed at but am not sure and asterisks for letters completely
unreadable and unguessable. Even so, many of the others I was sure
enough of to make an entry may be incorrect.
I have avoided any editing even when tempted to correct spelling of such as "Hellen" for "Helen". "Wm" and "Chas" and "Jas" are not expanded to William, Charles and James. In some places the census taker spelled "carpenter" as "carpentor" and in other places correctly as "carpenter". I have used his spelling in each case.
I am puzzled by the frequent use of initials for the first name of the husband while in the same family the names of children are complete with middle initials.
The quality of these transcriptions might be improved at least a little if the readers were to be told of the fact that many of the names are transcribed as "best guesses" from nearly indecipherable writing and that if through their specific knowledge of a family corrections could be supplied they would be welcomed.
