CHEMUNG VILLAGE CEMETERY – 1

The Chemung Cemetery is located in the village of Chemung, Town of Chemung, Chemung County, New York, and is one of the oldest burial grounds in the area, some tombstones bearing dates of 1798 and 1799. Unfortunately there are no records of interments except the grave markers prior to May 10, 1917.

In May, 1893, the Chemung Cemetery Corporation was formed at a meeting held in Ruggles Hall. Chemung village, and since then this organization has maintained the grounds in an acceptable manner. A few monuments lay on the ground, but there is no high grass, nor unsightly weeds or brush. Mowing is done on a regular schedule.

Doris and Joseph Boyd spent about 25 hours copying thedata appearing on all the existing grave stones on September 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 and 18, 1976. They also expended an additional 11 hours examining the cemetery ledger and recorded 75 or more burials where no tombstones were erected. This data is included in the following account, but it must be remembered that the dates are burial dates and not the death dates. There also could be as many as 75 or 100 unmarked graves in the older sections of the cemetery between the years 1798 and early 1917.

In the following record the surnames have been added in the case of some wives, sons, and/or daughters for the sake of clarity. Any data in brackets does not appear on the tombstones. Burials after September 30, 1976, are not included in the record.
